Pregnant With Alpha’s Genius Twins -
Chapter 295
It is...a long day. Of debates. And negotiations. And arguments for and against Victor's Supremacy. Victor glances at the window, seeing dusk settling outside and sighing deeply, glancing at his phone. Evelyn hasn't messaged him back at all, which is odd for her, but
-
Still, there's so much to be done here that he barely has time to think about it -
Victor glances around the room at the gathering of forty of the most powerful Alphas in the nation, who are each speaking quietly to one another with their ballots clenched in their hands. Slowly, one by one, they approach the box at the front of the ballroom- which has been transformed into a board room for this purpose - and slip their ballot into the box. Victor has, of course, already voted - but his vote was obvious.
When the final Alpha approaches the box, sighing, and slips his ballot in, a Beta from the Prath pack comes quickly forward to collect the box, opening it and sorting through the votes with all of the eyes of the Alphas upon his gloved hands, making sure that he doesn't make any quick slips or changes.
He moves through the votes quickly, tallying them together, and then passes the box off to another set of Betas from another pack to have them do the same. Victor takes a deep breath, his heart pounding, when the votes move to the hands of a third pack's Beta. They've taken the vote six times today, and there has never been a miscount, but neither has there been a decisive decision. It wasn't precisely a bad sign that it's taken six votes so far today - previous elections have taken more - it's just each of the individual packs levying their options to see what they could get from another pack in exchange for their vote, or to ensure that their needs were otherwise met.
After each vote the packs would meet again, either with Victor or each other, to further negotiate. It was a long process that made for an exhausting day, Victor knew. But still, tradition must be followed, and everyone must be secure in the knowledge that the election was fair and correct.
Once the final Beta stops counting, all three gather together to check their figures together. They nod to each other and Victor stands up straight, glancing between Rafe and Beta Stephen at his side. He clenches his teeth, anticipating that this is...this is the one that decides it.
"We have a clear majority," the Prath Beta announces, his voice ringing clear in the silent room. "The Alphas have levied their votes, and have declared that Alpha Kensington is the Supreme."
A cheer raises throughout the room and Victor exhales his long-held breath, hanging his head a little in disbelief that it... it finally happened. Still, though no one can see it, there's a huge smile on his face. Suddenly, though, Rafe's arms are wrapped tight around him and Victor returns the embrace, Rafe's laugher shaking his frame.
"You did it!" Rafe shouts amongst the cheers. "You did it, brother! Supreme!"
Laughing, Victor pulls away, shaking Rafe by the shoulders and then surprising Beta Stephen by wrapping him in a hug as well. Stephen gasps but then returns the hug heartily, laughing.
"Evelyn!" Victor calls, turning to the rank of Betas standing behind him. "I need Evelyn here! She has to know!" One of the Betas nods, smiling, and turns towards a door out of the room to fetch Victor's Luna.
Victor's eye is half on the door for the next fifteen minutes, always waiting for Evelyn to come through it as he shakes hand after hand, accepting the congratulations of the Alphas who voted for him and the begrudging acceptance of those who didn't. But he nods to each of them, hoping to let them know that he hopes to serve all of them - even those whose support he didn't win - to the best of his ability.
Still, he wonders. Where the hell is Evelyn?
Victor turns towards the door when he sees a little figure hurry through it. He blinks in surprise, turning away from another Alpha in mid-sentence when he sees lan running towards him, an electronic tablet in his hands. "Congratulations, papa!" lan shouts excitedly, running directly to Victor's side.
"Thank you, lan," Victor says, giving his son a smile and kneeling down next to him, but still baffled as to why he's here. Evelyn and he had agreed - the kids would stay in the cottage today. They'd break the news to them personally later tonight. But then why- "Mama's here," lan says, handing Victor the tablet and giving him a big smile.
"What?" Victor askes, confused, glancing up at Rafe and Stephen who have come close to his side, knowing that something about this is off.
Hurriedly, Victor flicks the tablet on, shocked when he sees Evelyn's face on it.
"E-evelyn?" he breathes, confused.
"Victor!" she says, laughing with joy. "I'm so proud of you! I'm so happy!"
"Where - where are you?" Victor says, turning to look around the room as if she might be here. The room is incredibly noisy, filled with the booming voices of Alphas milling around, discussing the vote, laughing, enjoying the end to a grueling process. He can see drinks being poured and quaffed around him, knowing that a big party is about to start.
"Um, I'm...at home," Evelyn says, giving him a tentative little smile.
"Why?" Victor asks, suddenly serious in the sea of merriment. "Evelyn, why aren't you here? What's wrong?"
"Um..." she says, her eyes glancing away awkwardly. "Because...I went into early labor...and I've been put on bedrest..."
The tablet cracks as it falls to the floor. Rafe gasps, reaching down for it and picking it up, Evelyn's face all wobbly now as she looks at him through the cracked and broken glass.
"Rafe?" Evelyn asks, confused. "Where's Victor?"
But when Rafe glances around, trying to replace out, all he sees is Victor's form fleeing out the door, pulling lan behind him.
I hear Victor's feet pounding up the steps.
"Uh oh," Alvin says, cuddled up next to me. "He's mad."
"He's not mad," I murmur, my stomach twisting. "He's just worried."
The door bursts open then, almost splintering as it slams against the wall as Victor flies through it. The doctor gives a little shriek of surprise, leaping up from her place in the chair she drew up close to the bed but Victor ignores her as he comes immediately to my side. "Evelyn," Victor gasps, his eyes roving over me, a little madness in him.
Alvin and I both look at him with wide-eyed shock as lan comes running into the room after him.
"I tried to tell him, mama!" lan shouts.
"I'm fine!" I gasp, reaching up to put my hands on either side of Victor's face, looking into his eyes. "I'm fine, really! They were supposed to tell you!"
"He ran too fast!" lan accuses, climbing onto the bed, "he wouldn't listen to me!"
Victors hands are shaking as he touches me, running them over my shoulders and down my side. "You're you're okay? You said - labor -"
"She did start labor," the doctor says behind Victor, hesitant. He spins, looking at her desperately. She puts her hands up as if to a dangerous animal that might bowl her over. "But it stopped. We stopped it. She's fine, everything is totally fine."
"Oh my god," Victor says, sinking onto the bed and putting his head in his hands, his whole body shaking now. "Oh my god."
"It's okay," I whisper, leaning forward to rub his back. "Everything's okay, Victor. The babies are okay, I'm okay..."
The doctor steps away for a moment, letting us take a minute as a family to be together, for Victor's nerves to settle. I murmur reassurances to him and the boys sit quietly, pressed to my side, as I tell him about having contractions this morning, and about calling Bridgette and the doctor, and about how we had a scary moment this afternoon but then everything stopped.
"Why didn't you call me," Victor asks between his teeth, livid with me.
"Because," I say, hesitating, my hand still rubbing his back. "I didn't want to...interrupt..."
He whips his face to me, glaring. "Evelyn, there is nothing more important than -"
"But you couldn't do anything!" I interject, a little exasperated. "And you were never going to get those forty Alphas in a room together again! And now, you're Supreme! And I'm fine!"
"Well, she's not totally fine," the doctor adds, walking back over to us when she deems her medical opinion necessary. I smile up at her, nodding.
"She's not?" Victor demands, his body tense again, staring at her.
"She needs to be on bedrest, Victor," the doctor explains, but then she hesitates. "I mean...Alpha. Um. Supreme..."
Victor waves a hand, dismissing the formalities, "bedrest? What does that mean?"
"It means," the doctor explains, "that Evelyn could go into labor again if she over-extends herself. Her body is telling us that it's ready to bring your babies into this world, but frankly, it would be better for your little girls if they could have a little more time gestating."
"Yeah!" Alvin adds, cheerfully poking my stomach. "You buns, you stay in your oven!"
Victor shoots a little glare at his son that Alvin, luckily, doesn't see, and turns his attention back to the doctor. "If the girls were born today..."
"They'd have been quite early," the doctor says with a shrug. "It wouldn't have been a good thing, but luckily, we don't have to worry about that." She gives Victor a smile. "Really, this happens often with wolf twins. We've seen it before, we'll see it again. Evelyn has to be careful, but if she stays in bed and doesn't push herself then the pregnancy will continue as normal."
Victor sighs and turns to me, reaching out a hand to touch my face. "I was so scared, Evelyn," he says, shaking his head.
"I know," I say, leaning into his hand. "I'm sorry. I was too. But I can stay in bed! I can do it! For..." I hesitate here as I realize how long I actually have to do this, "For...three months!" Victor groans, realizing how unlikely that is.
"I'm going to leave you to it," the doctor says, smiling at us and gathering her medical bag. "Evelyn, you call me if you feel anything strange. Okay? My phone is always on for you."
I shout out my goodbyes to her, letting her know that I will call if I need her, but Victor doesn't take his eyes from me for a single moment.
"I can do it, Victor," I say, smiling at him confidently. "Really, I can!"
