“George?”

“Another friend from the city?” Liam asked, his eyes fixed on George who still hadn’t noticed us.

“No,” I shook my head, my voice filled with unease. “I met him on the bus leaving the city. I wonder what he’s doing here.”

“This is really strange,” Liam grumbled, squinting his eyes.

At that moment, the wind changed. A thick breeze blew through the street, and I could see how George’s short hair fluttered under the current. His scent hit me like a ton of bricks, and I wondered how I hadn’t noticed it before.

“George, he was one of the guys who tried to kidnap me.”

My words set many things in motion. George’s head snapped up, his eyes met mine, filled with what seemed like surprise. Ethan was on the other side of the street before I could blink, moving faster than I thought possible. George spun on his heels, his cellphone fell to the ground as he made his way through a crowd of tourists. Ethan cut through the humans, sending them scattering in the grass and on the other side of the road.

My heart jumped in my chest as the two disappeared into a large crowd of people, heading towards the dense forest surrounding the town.

“His phone, he dropped his phone,” I exclaimed, grabbing Liam’s hand and running across the road.

The cellphone was somewhat battered from the fall, but it remained fully functional. I swiped the screen with my thumb and grimaced when it asked for a four-digit password.

“Nonsense,” I sighed. “It needs a password.”

Let me see it,” Liam replied. “We have a friend in the pack who’s good with electronics. He might be able to check it out.”

I handed Liam the phone and turned my eyes to the remaining crowd of people. Everyone had long forgotten that George and Ethan practically bulldozed them and continued wandering around the city.

My shoulders were tense with worry, my eyebrows furrowed at the thought of what might happen. Although I accepted Liam and Ethan as my companions, I knew little about them as individuals. I had no idea if Liam or Ethan could defend themselves, although I hoped their massive muscular bodies weren’t just for show. Would I know if something happened to Ethan? Would I feel it like I feel his emotions?

“Don’t worry, Sussan,” Liam looked at me, his voice incredibly soft despite his burning rage. “Ethan will catch him. Are you sure he was one of the men who attacked you?”

“Yes,” I nodded, meeting Liam’s hardened eyes. “I didn’t notice on the bus, but when the men attacked me, they smelled different.”

I took a step into his arms, pressing myself against his side for support. Anger rippled through him, burning at the tip of my tongue as his emotion floated over me. I could feel his anger ebb and flow under my touch, my presence taking the edge off the sharp emotion.

Liam turned his head towards where George had been once, inhaling deeply, a grimace etched on his face. George’s scent still lingered, as the wind hadn’t driven it away yet. At first, it was the normal scent of a male. Musky and somewhat earthy. As I focused on the thick layers of George’s aroma, I could sense something odd in his essence, as if he needed a good bath.

It wasn’t exactly body odor; it was more like the smell of a dirty animal.

“It’s a rogue,” Liam grimaced, his eyes gleaming with deadly determination. “What would a group of rogues want with you?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “They said their leader wanted me picked up.”

“That could be any Alpha,” Liam sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Actually, any werewolf in need of something can hire rogues. They’ll accept minimum payment for whatever you need them to do.”

“So, it could have been anyone who hired them,” I sighed.

“And what’s worse, they know you’re a white wolf,” Liam’s words came out in a low growl. “They’ll never stop now that they know what you are. You’re too valuable.”

I couldn’t help but tense up at what Liam had said. I had made my decision, and I knew running away wouldn’t solve anything, but it was disheartening to realize what my life had become. I would be hunted for the rest of my life, just like Bruma, for something I had no control over.

As if he could sense my distress, Liam turned and hugged me. His intoxicating scent filled my nostrils, masculine and rich, calming my frayed nerves. Butterflies danced in my stomach from the proximity between us, along with the surge of gentle calm flowing from Liam.

“It’s not your fault, darling,” Liam murmured, his lips against my forehead. The sparks dancing on my skin, along with Liam’s soft voice, calmed me even more. “We’ll keep you safe. They won’t lay a hand on you.”

“I trust you both,” I sighed. “It’s just that I used to be normal, as normal as any girl could be. I don’t complain anymore, but it’s still a lot to get used to.”

“I know,” Liam’s hand cupped my face, lifting it so that our eyes met. Dark and endless, he looked at me with an intensity that made my toes curl. “Ethan and I will be with you through it all. We’re not going anywhere, Sussan. You don’t have to go through any of this alone.”

Liam had a certain gravity about him, one that drew me in and claimed me as his own. I found myself wanting to be closer to him, seeking his comfort in any way I could. Maybe it was the mate bond that brought us closer, I wasn’t sure, but I wanted more of him.

Both of them had come all this way for me, yet neither had forced me to come back home. They respected my decision, and despite the pain that lingered within them, they understood why I had left. That was more than anyone had ever given me, and somehow, I knew they weren’t done giving. They would give me every last part of themselves until there was nothing left, and what scared me the most was that I was willing to do the same.

I stood on tiptoes, getting closer to his towering height. Liam’s surprise danced across my skin as I brushed my lips against his. Liam and Ethan had been my first k**s. In that moment, I had been completely overwhelmed by their attention, but now I craved it all.

Sparks tickled my lips as I grazed them against Liam’s, and I smiled as his arms enveloped me protectively. Liam made no move to continue our k**s, letting me explore his lips with my slight inexperience. When I pulled away, a breathtaking smile had formed on his face.

A light of happiness danced in his eyes, and when the sunlight hit his dark hair, I realized how stunningly beautiful he looked. As if he had been carved in stone, created just for me.

“You’re going to make Ethan jealous, honey,” Liam murmured softly, brushing his thumb against my lower l*p. “An Alpha’s jealousy is much worse than that of an average werewolf.”

“I’ll owe him one,” I said, breathless.

“Believe me, he’ll make you,” Liam smiled, a genuine smile. It was as if a light was shining within him, stunningly beautiful.

The shrill ring of a phone interrupted us, and we both stiffened, the carefree moment between us fading with the cool touch of the wind. George’s phone was ringing, a restricted number appeared on the screen.

Liam answered the call, pressing the speaker button as we both listened eagerly.

“Did you replace her?”

The voice was that of a man, rough and deep, but also kind. The voice wasn’t as deep as Liam’s or Ethan’s, but it was clear that it came from an older man. I looked at Liam, whose face darkened. I saw no recognition in his eyes, no hint that he knew who was speaking on the other end of the line.

“No, and you never will,” Liam growled. “But we will replace you, and you’ll wish you never laid a hand on what’s ours.”

The mysterious person ended the call, and we both fell silent. Liam held his anger inside, a kind of calm murderousness settling over his face.

Once again, a phone rang, this time Liam’s. He answered the call and placed the phone against his ear. I could hear Ethan’s raspy voice on the other end. Their conversation lasted a total of thirty seconds before Liam hung up.

“He caught him. He has George,” Liam smiled, although it was a smile of murderous anticipation. “He’s going back to the pack without us. There’s no way George is within smelling distance.”

“What will happen once Ethan brings him back to the pack?” I frowned. I knew little about this new world, but some things were dazzlingly clear.

Liam and Ethan had a kind of wild dominance that radiated from them in waves. Werewolves took care of their own and seemed to live by their own set of laws. The title of Alpha wasn’t just for show, which meant Liam and Ethan’s word was practically law. They wouldn’t be lenient with George, and there certainly wouldn’t be a trial. They would demand their own form of justice upon George and anyone who dared to try and hurt me.

“He’ll be interrogated, and if he’s smart, he’ll talk,” Liam growled, placing his hand on the small of my back as we crossed the street and headed towards the car.

“Will he be tortured?” I asked, despite knowing the answer.

Liam paused, and though his eyes were hard, they softened as they caught my worried gaze.

“Yes, he’ll be tortured,” Liam nodded. “It may make you uncomfortable, but we’re different from humans. We do things differently.”

Liam held the passenger door open for me, letting me get in before closing it. I sat in silence throughout the drive to the airport, reflecting on what he had said. What he hadn’t told me was that the idea of George being tortured didn’t just make me uncomfortable. I found it somewhat repugnant and wanted to be away when it happened, but a large part of me expected it and, worse, accepted it. Somewhere deep inside me, I knew werewolves weren’t lenient, that they didn’t believe in simply imprisoning someone for the rest of their lives.

The punishment for what George had tried to do to me was death.
