The short vacation had come to an end. Liam headed for the shower in a hurry, while Ethan took care of preparing coffee. After receiving a cup, I made my way to the tub, where I found Liam still bathing. I let my bathrobe drop and joined him.

“Are you nervous, sweetheart?” Liam asked as he applied shampoo and massaged my head with his fingers.

I sighed. “Somewhat, yes. I can’t deny it. What I fear the most is the number of lives that could be lost because of me.” I noticed the concern my words caused in Liam. “Promise me we’ll do everything we can to calm this down as quickly as possible.”

“We’ll do everything within our reach,” he said with conviction. “But I’m afraid this goes beyond just protecting you.” I thought I knew what he was referring to. “For countless years, the white wolves have been hunted indiscriminately. Most of the time, it’s to e*****e them, I’m afraid.” A shiver ran down my spine, despite the hot water in the tub, and I immediately knew it wasn’t due to Liam’s caresses on my head. “However, no single group has become strong enough to make a difference against the High Council. So, if war comes, the deaths wouldn’t necessarily fall on your shoulders. This might be the opportunity we have to change everything.”

I nodded. “Yes, that’s true,” I said in a somewhat subdued tone. “At that moment, I had more questions than answers, but I was also aware that we needed to do something. A life of s*****y couldn’t even be called a life. But we’ll do our best to prevent the war, right?”

“We will, my dear,” Liam replied as he withdrew his fingers from my head, noticing that I was scratching the healing mark on my neck.

Both marks already had a thin layer of skin over them and a dark pattern beneath their surface. They were sensitive to touch, especially to the twins’ touches, and they itched terribly. Liam held my fingers in his grip and shook his head, “Don’t scratch them, sweetheart.” An hour later, we were leaving through the door, huddled in the sedan that had taken us to the cabin. I complained a little about my simple breakfast. A few protein bars and an apple. Two days of the twins’ extravagant breakfasts had me hooked. They were pampering me, and I didn’t care enough to stop it.

“What’s the plan again?” I asked for what was possibly the seventh time.

I wanted to memorize every step, every delay. Maybe I wanted a semblance of control, especially now that my rights were literally being stripped away.

“You’re worrying too much,” Liam frowned, staring at Ethan through the rearview mirror.

Before I had time to respond, Liam unbuckled my seatbelt and pushed me back. I landed on his lap with a squeal, blushing when his member shifted beneath me. Now that we were all marked, the twins could feel my emotions. The marks hadn’t fully healed yet, but the connection seemed strong enough. They had both been incredibly attentive this morning, influenced by the pull of my emotions. If I felt frustrated or angry, one of the twins seemed to materialize by my side. That hadn’t changed in the few hours we had been driving.

It was nice to have someone feel my emotions for a change. Liam wrapped his arms around my torso and hugged me as Ethan explained the plan with seemingly unlimited patience.

“We’re going to drive this car to the outskirts of Axel’s pack. Once we reach neutral territory, we’ll meet up with Aly and the security detachment. Our parents, Thomas, and Axel will travel with another security group for an hour or two,” Ethan said, his eyes fixed on the road. His next words were what really worried me. “It’s not ideal, but we’ll stay at a hotel in neutral territory. After a few hours of rest, we’ll be back on the road.”

Neutral territory was the land that belonged to humans, or rather, the battlegrounds for the werewolf wars. More than neutral territory, it was a no man’s land. No Alpha wanted to harm their own land in the midst of war, so why not use the unoccupied land? Unoccupied because no werewolves lived there, only humans.

“Neutral territory can be incredibly dangerous. We have no choice but to rest there tonight. We’ll keep it brief and secure. We’ve rented an entire floor of the hotel, and there will be guards posted at every staircase and elevator,” Liam said, continuing what his brother had been saying. “There are rogues and occasional bounty hunters residing in neutral territory.”

“Why do werewolves need bounty hunters?” I asked Liam, settling into the warmth of his arms. Nothing could touch me when I was held by one of my twins. The anxiety I had been feeling was wiped away by everything that was Liam.

“Not all werewolves like to follow the High Council. Sometimes, important werewolves escape by moving to neutral territory. They can live undetected as a rogue,” Liam murmured, getting distracted as he traced the edges of my lips with his thumb. Whatever he was going to say next faded from my mind when Liam brought his lips close to mine. The rough pads of his fingers pressed against my face as he held my jaw, leaving me defenseless as he caught my lower l*p between his teeth. “You’re so easy to ignite, darling,” Liam murmured against my lips, pulling away from me with a laugh. The scent of my arousal had filled the car, light as dew-soaked petals. I swallowed and regained my composure. Looking into Ethan’s eyes through the rearview mirror, I smiled shyly.

“Sorry, Ethan.”

Ethan glanced back at Liam and nodded. “You have three hours, then it’s your turn to drive.”

“Agreed.” Liam smiled, making me roll my eyes.

I huffed, sliding off Liam’s lap. Ten minutes after my self-imposed wager, my willpower broke and crumbled. I would have thought having s*x in a car would be more uncomfortable, clumsier than usual. There was something exhilarating about taunting Ethan, watching his knuckles turn white on the steering wheel and the fabric of his pants tense.

Three hours later, we stopped at a gas station for the twins to switch places. Ethan practically toppled me, reclining me in the sedan’s seats. The heavily tinted windows provided all the privacy we needed, though Liam had a front-row seat for the show. “Well, that’s one way to distract myself from things,” I commented with a snort.

The morning quickly turned into afternoon. The ache in my legs and behind was a testament to how long we had been driving. The twins seemed to have an endless bladder and would g***n when I needed to pee after an hour and a half.

“We can’t just whip it out like you,” I half-spat at both of them.

I knew the moment we entered neutral territory because the twins fell completely silent. It was almost dark, and every shadow on the roadside frightened me. I saw killers in the darkness, pawns of the High Council sent to steal my life. Liam called the head of our security team and stayed on the phone with him until we reached the meeting point. We all gathered in the parking lot of a closed truck stop.

Cars filled the regular lots, and semitrailers filled the remaining spaces. In the abandoned truck stop where we parked, there was no one in sight. In an hour, there were another five darkened sedans in the parking lot. We all sat close to each other, and I nearly jumped out of the vehicle when I saw a flash. Aly was stepping out of one of the sedans, a security guard holding the door for her. “She’s traveling with us,” Liam smiled through the rearview mirror.

“Can you believe how creepy this place is?” Aly teased, climbing into the back seat of the sedan. Ethan sat in the passenger seat, while Liam pulled out of the parking lot. We sandwiched between two other sedans. I couldn’t help but feel like the president, or some kind of royalty. We had our own protection detail following us along the way, standing at our room doors and alert to threats.

It was one in the morning, and we had been traveling with the security team around us for two hours. My eyelids felt like they were tethered to weights. I couldn’t understand why I was so tired when I had spent the day sitting. Sitting in a car all day could really drain your energy.

Liam woke me from my nap as we entered the hotel parking lot. It was much fancier than what I was used to. I had stayed in motels with Lia a few times, and I didn’t particularly care to remember those places, but this hotel had a restaurant and a club inside, both on the lower level. The soulful singing of an artist echoed in the bustling club. Ethan had reserved the entire top floor for us and our security team. The team took turns standing at entrances and exits. I couldn’t help but wonder if I really needed this kind of protection; I certainly hoped I wasn’t in imminent danger.

I fell face-first onto one of the most luxurious beds ever made, and I fell asleep almost immediately. Liam had to lift me off the bed to get me to move, and I might have wrestled with him for a few seconds. Aly was staying in the room right across from ours. She was the only one who had a whole room to herself. Even Thomas and Axel had to share, a feat I still think is impossible for the two of them. I snuggled between Liam and Ethan, drifting off to sleep as Ethan’s fingers traced patterns on my spine and Liam’s cheek rested against my head. We woke up when a quick knock sounded on the door, followed by Aly’s frightened voice.
