Chapter 119 This Minor Injury Won’t Kill Me
Upon receiving a call from the school, Eric immediately canceled his meeting and rushed over. Inreality, Gavin could have handled the matter on his own. There was no need for Eric to personally showup.
Gavin hesitated before saying, “Do you really want to expel Hector from school and sentence him toten years in prison? As far as I know, all of this was caused by Ms. Eileen.”
Eric stared at him intently before looking out the window. A cold aura surrounded him. “Do you think it’sher fault too?”
Suddenly, Gavin realized he had said something he shouldn’t have. He lowered his head andmurmured, “I would never dare.”
“After all these years, don’t forget who you’re working for!” Eric asserted firmly as he stood up from hischair. He gave the man a cold and sharp gaze before turning and walking away. Just as he reached thedoor, Gavin declared, “I serve only you.”
The moment he decided to keep me by his side back then, my life was destined to be his. He was theone who gave me a second chance at life.
Eric stopped in his tracks. “I’m not the one paying your salary!”
She’s becoming increasingly disobedient now. I’ve never interfered with her school matters, and self-improvement is good. But if she wants to spread her wings and escape from the Swan family, it’s adelusion! She has become smarter, but she has misplaced her priorities. So, all she will receive is aharsher punishment.
In the lounge, Eileen stood up, avoiding Jasper’s gaze.
“Eric should be done discussing things. I’ll go and take a look,” she said.
She opened the door, barely faltering in her steps. In her other hand, she held the salve given. byJasper.
Eric was smoking on the balcony while waiting for her. Apart from social obligations, Eileen rarely sawhim smoke.
Gavin alerted him to her presence, and Eric extinguished the half-smoked cigarette on the guardrail.
Eileen watched him approach. Her gaze then shifted to Jasper, who also exited the lounge. For somereason, she felt guilty, as though she had been caught doing something wrong.
Eric reached her, and she found herself sandwiched between the two men. There seemed to
be a strange tension between them, making her feel oppressed. It was as though a silent battle wastaking place in the air.
Eric was the first to speak. “It’s been a long time, Mr. Smith.”
Jasper simply nodded in response.
He was a few years younger than Eric, but his presence was in no way inferior to Eric’s.
However, he was different from Eric. Eric had been navigating the business world for many years, experiencing danger and violence. He had climbed his way to the top, using any means necessary toachieve his goals. Crafty by nature, he was exceedingly cunning.
On the other hand, Jasper had always relied on his powerful family. From a young age, he had lived asheltered life of luxury. Even after inheriting the Smith Corporation, he still had the Smith and Friedmanfamilies as his strong backers.
If these two men became real enemies, Eileen couldn’t even begin to imagine the bloodshed andchaos that would ensue.
When it came to playing dirty, Jasper couldn’t match Eric.
In truth, Eric was the one behind the truck accident back then.
Jasper said to Eileen, “I’ll come and pick you up tonight.”
Eileen dared not look at Eric. She nodded slightly. “Okay.”
“Is something wrong?” Eric asked Eileen.
Feeling his intense gaze on her, Eileen explained, “Mr. Smith helped me today, so I invited him todinner.”
Eric nodded. “Indeed, that’s only fair. But all things considered, as your brother, I should be the oneextending the invitation. I will take care of everything for tonight. Mr. Smith, would you mind if I bring mysister along?”
“Mr. Smith!” Richard interjected.
Jasper waved his hand, cutting Richard off. He chuckled lightly and said casually, “Of course
not.”
“See you tonight,” he said, looking at Eileen with a gentle expression.
Eileen nodded. “Sure.”
Afterwards, Jasper left. He sat in the back of the car, his mood somber. “Have you found
anything about the car accident back then?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Smith. We’ve checked all the vehicles from that night. When we found the truck, it was ina junkyard, but the driver… was nowhere to be found. Moreover, we can’t replace any information abouthim. It’s as though someone is deliberately concealing it. Anyway, this incident doesn’t feel like anaccident to me,” Fabian answered.
Jasper closed his eyes. “There’s no need to investigate further. It’s not worth our time to pursuesomeone like that.”
The hidden meaning in his words struck Fabian, and the answer seemed to surface within him.
Meanwhile, Eileen followed Eric down the stairs, both of them remaining silent.
At the doorway, she saw Vera and Yvette descending the stairs.
Yvette approached Eileen. “Are you okay? I’m so sorry! I shouldn’t have gone to Mr. Gardner. It’s allHector’s fault for misunderstanding things. He’s the one with ulterior motives. It has nothing to do withyou. Also, I got the test paper from Mr. Gardner. You did amazing, Eileen!”
She excitedly pulled the folded test paper out of her pocket and continued, “Do you know you rankedsecond in the exam? My goodness… Eileen, you’re truly incredible.”
Eileen stared blankly at the test paper, unable to utter a word.
So… I got into the school based on my own abilities and not because of Yvette’s connections.
After learning that, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
“Thank… Thank you…”
“And besides…” Yvette nudged Eileen with her elbow. “My brother told you not to feel guilty. Hector ismentally unstable, and her mother’s uremia is already in the late stages. Even if her mother had themoney for treatment, she wouldn’t survive the surgery. It’s not your fault, Eileen. This time, my brotherpunished me too. I have to copy a book three hundred times.”
“Really?” Why is she laughing so happily despite being punished?
“Yeah. The second thing he said made me happy even though I was being punished.”
“I’m glad everything has been resolved. Eric, is Hector going to prison?” Vera asked.
“Most likely. We just have to wait for the court’s decision,” Eric replied.
He might receive a prison sentence of six to ten years.
In fact, it could be even longer than that. If they intervene, Hector could potentially be sentenced to lifeimprisonment.
Initially, they demanded fifty thousand. Not only did they fail to receive a single penny, but they alsoended up losing everything they had.
Realizing that they had provoked someone they couldn’t afford to offend, they all distanced themselvesand fled, one after another.
Their sole motive was simply money.
Unfortunately, they picked the wrong person to mess with.
Suddenly, Eileen noticed a group of familiar figures up ahead. Among them, Nigel and Silas stood out.Elm was also among them.
There was also a boy in a wheelchair, likely “George,” whom Paola often mentioned. He was onlysixteen years old, an orphan who grew up in a fishing village, relying on the kindness of others tosurvive.
They don’t seem as terrible as I imagined. When I had a knife against my neck, he was the one whorushed forward and tightly grasped Hector’s hand, giving me a chance to escape.
Paola smacked George on the head. “I told you there was no need to come, but you insisted. Look, allthat effort was for nothing! Not only did you not receive any compensation, but she doesn’t even botherto spare you a glance.”
“Paola, as long as everyone is okay, that’s all that matters. This minor injury won’t kill me.”
George had lived in her house since he was a child, so Paola considered him her own brother. Thethought of ungrateful Eileen made her seethe with anger.
Ever since George was hospitalized, Eileen never visited him even once. She didn’t even say a simple“thank you.” It would be better if he had just let her die!
