Chapter 188

Chapter 188 When Will You Be Back

Eileen struggled to support Elm as they made their way out of school. It was not an easy task for her.

The Smith family’s private driver brought the car around.

Upon seeing Eileen helping Elm, the driver immediately got out of the car and assisted Elm into it.

“Ms. Eileen, why are you with him?” the driver asked.

Eileen furrowed her brows. “It’s a long story. Let’s head back first!”

The driver informed her, “I’m sorry, Ms. Eileen, but Old Mrs. Smith has made it clear th cannot enter theSmith residence without permission.”

How could I forget about this?

“Forget it. Let’s go to my place first,”

Eileen placed Elm in the back seat behind the passenger side and fastened his seatbelt. Sh then sat inthe front passenger seat to give directions.

They arrived at an alley where Eileen had once lived for a while. There was no elevator. Eileen and thedriver, supporting the unconscious Elm, made their way upstairs.

She retrieved the key hidden beneath the flower bed and opened the door before fumbling around forthe light switch on the wall. The room was not as messy as she had anticipated. On the contrary, it wasquite clean and tidy, as if someone had recently been living there.

There was still half-eaten food on the table, covered with a mesh cover.

Don’t tell me he has been living here recently.

They helped Elm onto the bed.

The driver took off his shoes and socks before tucking him in.

Eileen glanced at the person on the bed. “It’s not convenient for me to take care of him here. Is thereanyone else at his house?”

“Mrs. Smith is probably asleep at this hour.”

“Forget it, let ne think of another solution! We can’t just leave him here alone”

Elm’s mother was quite attractive and had a gentle demeanor, but she seemed a bit frail.

Elm probably didn’t want to worry his mother.

“Ms. Eileen, don’t worry. Mr. Elm will be fine. Shall we go back now? If Mr. Jasper replaces out, he mightget angry.”

“Let’s go back then!” Eileen gave Elm a long look, her eyes full of emotion.

She then turned off the lights in the room and closed the door.

For her, Elm was merely her savior and a friend, but he could never be anything more.

She had had enough of such relationships. The person she liked always had a swarm of admirersaround.

His affection never focused on just one person.

Perhaps, it was just a momentary impulse.

She would definitely be lying if she said she didn’t like Jasper…

One of the main reasons Eileen was moved by him was that he said he didn’t mind that she didn’t havea uterus.

After she was discharged from the hospital and recuperated at home, Jasper had been taking care ofher with utmost attention and care.

Eileen had never experienced being cared for.

For the first time, she felt loved by Jasper.

Jasper was a good man.

He was so great that she couldn’t help but fall for him.

When they arrived at the Smith residence, the driver spoke up. “If Mr. Jasper asks about whathappened today…”

Eileen said indifferently, “Tell him the truth. If there are misunderstandings. I will explain it to him.”

Since they were together, there were certain things she didn’t want to hide from him.

Aside from that incident, of course.

She was certain that it would never happen again.

Even if she were to marry Jasper, she would want to do so with a clean slate.

Eileen was born around the seventies and eighties. She grew up with her grandmother in thecountryside, and from an early age, she was exposed to matters of both sexes. Deep down, she wasrather traditional and conservative.

She couldn’t tolerate infidelity, no matter who was at fault.

Even if she chose to forgive the first time, it would happen again.

That was what she saw with Eric.

Eileen emerged from the bathroom, turning on her phone for the first time. She saw th Jasper hadalready called several times, but she hadn’t answered. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, dressed in a long robe with a belt around her waist. Her hair was slightly damp, not yet dry.

Eileen returned the call, and it was answered within just a few seconds.

The familiar, deep, and magnetic voice echoed from the phone. “Are you still awake?”

Eileen looked at the moon in the sky, its shape similar to the crescent pendant on her nec

“When will you be back?”

The man chuckled lightly. “Eileen, it’s only been a day. To be precise, just fifteen hours and twelveminutes. What’s wrong? Did something happen at school?”

Eileen nervously clutched at her clothes, her heartbeat audible to her own ears, “I-I miss you!”

It took her a lot of courage to say that.

In her mind, she couldn’t help but recall the countless times she had spoken such words to Eric. Whatfollowed was indeed a series of cold, heart-wrenching voices.

The sound of him in bed with another woman, and the voice of another woman warning her not to callagain.

Every time she thought of these, Eileen’s heart seemed to have been cut out, dripping with blood. However, it was still beating.

On the other end of the line, the man stood up from the office desk. Tugging at his tie, he walked overto the floor-to-ceiling window with one hand in his pocket and looked up at the

crescent moon.

“Once I’m done with things here, I’ll come back as soon as I can. It’s getting late, so go to

sleep now….”

“Can you stay with me a little longer on the phone?” the girl on the line asked.

“Okay, I’ll stay with you.”

There was a rustling sound that should’ve come from the quilt. She must have gone to bed.

Eileen was lying in bed, her hand curved under her head as a pillow. By the pillow, her phone wasplaced, displaying an ongoing call.

“Are you asleep? Or are you still busy?”

“I just took a shower and will sleep in a bit.”

“Jasper, can you tell me a bedtime story? No one has ever told me one before.”

Her mother passed away after giving birth to her.

She was raised by Sharon since she was a child, and even her father rarely held her.

“Do you want to hear the story of the Misty Grove?”

“Sure.”

“There was a dense fog in the forest, and a small black bear became lost. It desired to replace its way backhome…”

Midway through the tale, Jasper heard Eileen’s even, shallow breaths. It appeared as though she hadalready drifted off to sleep.

The morning sun cast a gentle, golden glow upon

her.

Eileen awoke to discover that her phone had automatically shut down due to a depleted battery.

After charging for a while, she noticed that the call from the previous night had ended. around four orfive in the morning.

This time, she wasn’t tardy and managed to arrive at the early morning self-study session on

time.

With disheveled hair, Elm walked by carrying his backpack. As usual, he passed by her window withoutacknowledging her.

The events of last night seemed like a farce. That was good. She intended to pretend it never occurred.

This time, Yvette returned.

She appeared to be in poor condition, with dark circles under her eyes. She walked to her usual spot, sprawled out, and promptly fell asleep.

Did something happen to the Friedman family in the past few days?

When Eileen averted her gaze, she suddenly noticed that Vera was giving her a cold stare.

In the blink of an eye, that icy gaze vanished instantly. Vera flashed her an innocent smile.

Eileen began to question whether she had imagined it.
