Chapter 42 Vera Was Beaten Up

In the infirmary….

“Fortunately, it was just a false alarm. It’s nothing serious except that you’re on your period. It’s nothingserious, but the injuries on your faces… The doctor in the infirmary glanced at the teacher on dutybeside him.

The teacher on duty stood up and said, “Mr. Leon, you should go back first! I’ll take care of the two ofthem.”

“Okay, Mr. Cory, then I’ll go back first. The medicine has been prescribed, and it’s on the table. Don’tforget to take it.”

The teacher on duty was Duncan, the director of the moral education department. He was a middle-aged man in his forties, with a big belly and glasses. He looked. There were blood stains on his clotheswhen he carried Vera to the infirmary.

Vera was on the first day of her period when she experienced cramps. She used to have painkillers onher, but the painkillers were in her schoolbag, and she did not take them yet.

Duncan kept looking at Vera. Vera lowered his eyes and held a glass of warm water in his hand, shedid not know what Duncan was thinking.

Jasmine’s face was much better after just applying the medicine. She looked at Vera with a distressedface, “Jasmine, are you feeling better? You got bullied because I was useless.”

Vera said in a weak voice, “It’s not your fault, sir. It’s mine, I’m the one who got you involved

Duncan glanced at his watch: “It’s almost eleven o’clock, go back and rest first, I will tell yourhomeroom teacher about what happened to you tomorrow.”

Speaking of which, he had already walked to the bed where Vera rested, and squatted halfway, “Vera,I’ll carry you back to the dormitory.”

Vera took the water glass and shook it tightly, “No need, sir, I’m much better and I can walk by myself.”

Duncan insisted, “How can this be? I’m worried about you!” As he said that, he stretched out. his handand was about to reach out to Vera.

Vera’s tone suddenly turned cold, “Sir, as I said, I can walk by myself!”

Jasmine was taken aback by the unfamiliar look in Vera’s eyes. She seemed like a completely differentperson from the Vera she knew. It felt like an illusion when Vera’s soft tone and faint. smile vanished inan instant. She pleaded. “Jasmine, can you please help me up?”

Startled for a moment, Jasmine quickly understood the situation and replied, “Ah… okay..”

Vera lifted the blanket, got out of bed, and put on her shoes. Duncan coughed awkwardly, but his eyesstill held that inappropriate look he had shown earlier, appreciating the girl’s tender skin and bodyshape.

As they left the infirmary and passed by the classroom, Jasmine went upstairs to get Vera’s painkiller.Duncan spoke to the dormitory caretaker, and the door was quickly opened for

them.

When they entered the dormitory, the lights were already turned off. Among the six occupants, a coupleof people were still awake, studying under a small desk lamp.

“Why did you two come back this late?” one of them asked.

Snowie noticed Jasmine’s face and exclaimed, “Oh my, Jasmine, what happened to your face?”

Vera went to her locker and searched through her pajamas. To her dismay, she found that some of theskin care products Eric had bought for her were missing. These were the Lancome products he broughtback from his business trip to France last time, and although they might not be very expensive for her, they held sentimental value.

She glanced at the missing items but chose not to say anything. Instead, she looked into the cabinetonce more and noticed that her usual night dress was also gone.

“Jasmine, I forgot to tell you. When I came back to the dormitory today, it was dark, and I accidentallywore your night dress. Sorry about that,” Snowie explained. “And about the skin care products, Jamieand the others borrowed them, and they’ve been working really well. She hasn’t had any acne sincethen.”

Snowie asked nervously, “You… don’t mind, right?”

Jasmine expressed her dissatisfaction, saying, “You are going too far. Vera usually shares. snacks withyou, which is already very kind of her. But now, you’re touching her things without her permission.”

Kelly, who occupied the upper bunk next to them, chimed in, “It’s not even your stuff.”

Someone else in the dormitory complained, “Why are you making so much noise? We’re sleeping!”

Vera tried to diffuse the tension, saying, “It’s alright, just use it. Jasmine, don’t be angry. Eric will buymore for me when they’re used up.

In the dim light, Vera’s expression was hard to discern, and her tone did not betray any annoyance, sothey let the matter go.

In their impression, Vera had a good temper and rarely got upset with others.

Vera retrieved some unopened skin care products from under the cabinet and handed them. toJasmine, saying, “You can have some too. These are for you, don’t be angry.”

Jasmine hesitated, “I can’t accept it, it’s too expensive.”

“Shh, let’s not wake the others again.”

Later, Vera went to the bathroom to freshen up and returned to the dormitory, ready to sleep. She puton her pajamas and applied a heat pack to her abdomen and headed to rest.

When Jasmine was done washing up, Vera was already fast asleep..

The next morning, Vera skipped the 5.40 a.m. run due to her period. When Jasmine touched. Vera’sforehead, she noticed that her whole body felt cold, something was wrong.

“Vera, are you alright? I’ll go replace the dormitory caretaker right away.”

“No… no need. I’m in too much pain. I’ll just take some painkillers.”

Vera sat up on the bed and noticed that her worn-out nightgown had been returned. She looked at it,frowned, but remained silent.

After taking the painkillers, Vera requested, “Please, help me ask the head teacher for a leave ofabsence for self-study this morning,”

Jasmine asked about breakfast, to which Vera shook her head, saying, “I won’t eat. I don’t have muchappetite. Thank you, Jasmine. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t know what to do.”

Jasmine replied, “It’s okay. You should rest and take care of yourself.”

In the bathroom, two girls who had just returned from running and exercising were washing up andgossiping, deliberately leaving the door open so that Jasmine could hear them.

“Look at Jasmine, always so eager to please others. If you give her something delicious, she becomesa total pushover.”

“Yeah, and have you seen her face? It’s nothing special. Who knows if those skin care products areeven genuine? She’s just trying to look good.”

Jasmine wanted to confront them, but Vera held her back, saying, “Don’t bother. The exams arecoming up, and there’s no need to get involved in such petty matters.”

At Vera’s school, there was a strict rule against fighting, and getting caught in a fight could. lead toexpulsion. They needed to focus on their studies during this crucial time.

News of Vera being beaten spread rapidly throughout the grade in less than a day. If it were someoneelse, they might have gone unnoticed, but being a good-looking and high- achieving student like Vera,it was hard not to be noticed

Since her arrival, Vera had quickly become a student representative and even delivered a speech onthe podium. Her presence was hard to forget

Eileen was aware that Vera was being bullied, and she knew that Elm would come to her for

revenge

As a result, her lunch and test papers were sabotaged.
