Chapter 8 The Young Man In The Wheelchair
The conversation continued behind the wall. “How about we go out for a walk, Jasper? You’ve beenstaying home for a very long time. I’m worried about you.” “I don’t need your concern. A useless pieceof sh*t like me would be better off dead! Get out, all of you!” Yet another ear-piercing noise rang out ashe broke a hole in the window. “A-All right. I’ll leave. Please don’t hurt yourself.” Eileen was shocked.Although she couldn’t hear the conversation very clearly, she could tell that it was between a motherand son. Sharon glanced in Eileen’s direction and said regretfully, “The one staying next door is theheir of the Smith family. He got into an accident when he was little and had been staying indoors eversince. That poor thing… I think he isn’t quite right in the head.” Eileen nodded in response and fell intodeep thought. In her past life, Jasper was eighteen when he committed suicide by slitting his wrists. Hewas already dead by the time the ambulance arrived. Eileen was watching from the balcony as theparamedics covered his lifeless body with a white blanket and carried it into the ambulance. Apparently,he had been dead for two days before they discovered his body in the bathroom. As Eileen glanced atthe cake on the table and stared at the wall, a thought suddenly formed inside her head. She then cut ahuge slice of the cake, placed it carefully inside a box, and tied a ribbon on it. “I’ll be right back, Sharon.Help me put the cake in the refrigerator.” Sharon could only shake her head helplessly in response asEileen had run off before she could ask where she was going. Eileen ran into her bedroom, grabbed apen and a piece of paper, and retrieved her drone from storage. She had bought that drone when shewas fifteen, only to leave it aside after playing with it for a few days. This time, however, she was ableto put it to good use. After writing a note and attaching it to the ribbon, she made her way into thecourtyard with the cake and drone in hand. As the mansions were connected, Eileen attached the boxcontaining the cake onto the drone and flew it in through the broken window. Jasper sat on awheelchair, his gaze fixated venomously on a blade lying amidst broken glass on the floor. Spending allof his time indoors had left his skin pallid, exuding a sickly and somber aura. Why would my parentsbring me into this world if they don’t love each other? Now that they both have their own respectivefamilies, what will become of me? I’m just a cripple that nobody wants! Jasper’s eyes darkened,
growing gloomier as he struggled to rise from his wheelchair. His legs proved too feeble to bear hisweight, and he crumpled to the floor seconds later. Broken glass cut into his palms, causing them tobleed, staining the wooden floorboards a vivid red. Undeterred, he retrieved the blade from theshattered glass and slid it out. All I have to do is slash my wrists open with this razor-sharp blade, andI’ll be free from my suffering! Out of nowhere, an unidentified object sailed through the window, landingwithin the room. Jasper paused, eyeing the object warily. Huh? That looks like a drone… It even has abox attached to it… After a brief inspection to ensure its harmlessness, he picked up the box. Within,he found a note attached that read: My name is Eileen Swan. I’m your neighbor, and it’s my birthdaytoday. I baked this cake myself. Please have some! I’ll come visit you every day from now on, okay?Eileen Swan? She’s coming to visit me every day? Jasper eagerly tore open the box and devoured thecake. The sweetness on his tongue and the delightful aroma enveloping him brought a warm sensationto his heart. In that moment, the urge to end his own life faded away. After staring at the broken windowfor quite some time, Eileen directed her drone back to her. A few minutes later, the drone landed nextto her feet, and a smile appeared on Eileen’s face as she saw that he had eaten the cake. he reasonbehind her action eluded her, but perhaps it was a shared understanding of being abandoned by thoseclose to them. If she could, Eileen wanted to prevent him from ending his life this time.
