Chapter 31

ADRIAN’S POV

The goblet clattered to the floor as she fell, the crimson contents spilling across the ground. Tessa. crumpled, giving a silent scream. Every part of me screamed at me to reach her but my feet remained rooted to the spot unable to move. My mind was in paralysis and the only thing I could recognize was the sheer audacity of her act.

She’d drunk the goddamn poison.

The elders went into a fit of chaos, some surged from their seats while some sat there, their faces etched with concern, their gaze flickering from Tessa to Giselle whose smug smile had been replaced by a mask of perfectly manufactured shock.

“This is madness” an elder shouted, his voice thick with indignation. “Call a medic at once!”

The doors were pushed open and a male sentinel rushed in with Gabe following him in haste.

“Tessa!” I shouted finally getting my voice as I rushed to her slumped figure on the floor.

I looked at Gabe with urgency, he felt her pulse and he furrowed his brow in confusion and he muttered something to himself.

“What, what’s wrong?” I asked, fear evident in my voice.

My gaze flickered to Giselle she was unfazed by the whole situation. A flicker of something, perhaps satisfaction or maybe a hint of triumph crossed her features for a fleeting moment before she morphed her expression into one of concern.

Gabe looked at me with cold fury blatant in his expression.

“She needs to be taken to the med bay immediately,” He said, anger evident in his me, I had let this happen in my presence.

  1. e. Anger at

Without waiting for a reply from me, Gabe and the sturdy young sentinel carefully lifted Tessa together and rushed out. The sight of her pale, still form sent a wave of panic rushing through me. I wanted to follow them, to help, and to make sure that she survived it.

A hand on my shoulder stopped me. I turned to look at Elder William who shook his head at me.

“I think it’s best that you stay here, Alpha Adrian. There’s nothing you can help to do in the med bay, you’ll only be in the way” He advised.

His words stung but I knew he was right. My presence at the med bay would only hinder their efforts. With a heavy heart, I watched them disappear through the double doors.

The silence that was still upon the meeting hall remained, the once active elders had become silent and brooding as they filed out one by one quietly.

Chapter 31

I was left alone with Giselle.

“This is all your fault!” I snarled unable to keep the fury out of my voice.

She looked at me with a look of feigned surprise..

“What do you mean, Adrian?” She said cloyingly sweet.

Her reaction was grating on my already fractured nerves.

“I have no idea why the goblet was poisoned…” she said.

Her words were drowned by the anger welling inside me. I lunged towards her, towering over her, my fists clenched so tightly that my nails dug into my skin.

“Don’t play innocent with me, Giselle. Then why was there a gloom flower In your room?” I growled, my voice a low grumble to match how both I and my wolf felt.

She recoiled slightly under the intensity of my gaze but quickly recovered her composure. “That’s a ridiculous accusation, what would I gain from killing Tessa?“.

“I don’t know but what I do know is that Tessa risked her life to expose something and I’m gonna replace out what,” I said, the words tasting like ash on my tongue.

“I don’t have answers, Adrian. Perhaps it would do you good to believe what I say” She snapped

back.

“Giselle,” I said, the edge of my control threatening to break. “I swear on the moon goddess that I will replace out the truth. If you are innocent then you have nothing to fear but if you are in fact guilty, just a little bit then I swear you will regret ever knowing me” I said, contempt glaring in my voice.

She was silent, her eyes wide as she looked at me

“Adrian, why? Why are you defending her when she’s simply desperate to deflect the blame?” Her face hardened and I saw a flicker of something briefly in her eyes, was it fear? Defiance? Or maybe both?

“I welcome any investigation because I’m innocent,” she said.

“I do hope you truly are innocent because right now, you’re really suspicious,” I said, a smirk forming at the corner of my lips.

Her gaze hardened.

“Maybe you should have a reality check, Adrian. I’m your Luna, not her. Do you still consider her your Luna?” She asked, her voice loud.

I tsked and turned to walk away.

Answer me! She’s nothing to you, Adrian!” She screamed after me.

Chapter 31

I turned back at once, flames dancing in my eyes.

She’s everything to me! She’s still my Luna and she’s still my mate! Not you!” I said before I could. stop myself.

Her eyes widened to the size of golf balls and she took a step closer to me but I raised a hand to her, telling her to stop.

“You are to stay here, Giselle. Your room will be searched for anything and you’re not allowed to leave in the meantime” I ordered

“What?! You can’t do that!” She yelled.

I scoffed and walked out of the hall, giving the sentinel at the door instructions not to open the door for her while I gave instructions to the head sentinel to conduct a search in Giselle’s room.

Tessa! I had to go check up on her. Oh, goddess, don’t do this to me. Don’t bring her back to me. then forcefully take her away.

I rushed to the med bay, fear in my eyes. Would she still be alive? Gloom worked fast and I feared that they may not be able to do anything to save her.

The door to the med bay was locked and I tried pecking through the windows but nothing. Damn

it!

I collapsed on the chair outside and buried my head in my hands. Oh moon goddess, do this one thing for me.

“Daddy?” I heard a tiny voice next to me making my heart skip a beat as I looked up at a child- sky.

“Sky, you…what are you doing here?” I asked trying to wipe my tears, I doubt the what was happening, he didn’t know his mother was on the verge of death.

“You always cry. Why?” He asked, peering at me as he sat next to me.

“Me? Cry? Of course not, I had something in my eye” I lied.

His eyes remained fixed on me in silent consternation for a while before he spoke.

Mum used to say that

– child knew

“Well, you shouldn’t cry. it wasn’t good to show your tears to peoplehe said as he stared at the doors of the med bay

I sighed.

“You came to see your mum?” I asked.

He pouted.

Mum said that she’d come to play with us but she didn’t and Kai kept crying so I came to call

Mum,” He said.

I licked my dry lips.

“Your mum is really busy right now, you know she’s a medic, right? She has a lot of work right now” I said.

“Of course, I know the nature of Mum’s work. Back when we were in…ummeastern Ridge, mum would spend all day out, people would come to the house every day and mum would heal all of them” He said proudly and I smiled at him.

“Where are your brothers?” I asked.

“They’re with Ria and the nanny. I told Ria I wanted to go ease myself then I snuck here to talk to mummy” He said giving a toothy grin.

“Well, since mummy is busy then why don’t you talk to me?” I said leaning closer to him.

Ummm, no. If I spend one more minute here then Aunt Ria will whoop my ass, I have to rush back. You should stop by the nanny sometime so I can Introduce my daddy to Kai and Ty.” He said. getting up

For a little child, he sure was bold.

“Tell you what, I’ll drop by tomorrow so we can play together. How does that sound?” I said smiling despite the pain I felt inwards.

“Deal! Don’t break your promise, Daddy” He said hooking his finger with mine for a pinky promise before he skipped off.

I rubbed

my hand on my face as soon as he was gone waiting for someone to open the med bay.

I heard footsteps and I looked up to see the head sentinel.

“Alpha, I have looked all over for you,” He said bowing.

I waved my hand dismissively to him

“Are you done with the search?” I asked to which he nodded. Finally!

“What did you replace?” I asked.

He hesitated for a brief moment.

“No, Alpha. There was nothing to see in her room, there was no peculiar flower” He said bowing deeply.

Damn it! Now what was I supposed to believe? Tessa had no reason to lie so why wasn’t there a flower as she had said? Had Giselle already gotten rid of the flower? It made no sense.

Chapter 31

You may leave…..also open the meeting hall’s door for the LunaI ordered waving him away.

He bowed deeply and left.

I sat back down waiting for the door to the med bay to open. I was there for 7 long agonizing hours without news from inside the med bay. I paced about restlessly, my stomach grumbled but it was the least of my worries. Every creak of the floorboard and every hushed whisper from inside the Med bay sent a jostle through me.

Finally, the door swung open and Gabe stepped out he stopped in his tracks upon sighting me.

“Alpha Adrian, you’re still here. I knew when you arrived hours ago but I didn’t expect that you’d still be here” he said looking me over.

“How is she?” I asked, my voice hoarse from disuse.

His eyes flickered with something, hesitation?

“Tessa is fine” He finally said.

I felt a huge weight lift off me and I sighed heavily in relief.

“Can…can I please see her?” I asked not wanting to barge into the med bay.

He gave me a scrutinizing look and I noticed his eyes flicker back into the med bay. He was hiding something,

“Well, she’s actually resting now. She’s fine really” he said again.

The relief that was washing over me at his words was enough to make my knees buckle beneath me. I wanted nothing more than to see Tessa, hold her hand, and assure myself that everything was okay.

I looked at Gabe, he didn’t seem exhausted at all and I frowned but I dismissed it.

“Well?” I urged.

He cleared his throat and nodded.

“come on in,” he said leading me in

I rushed in after him, and he led me to a ward at the far end of the med bay.

As I entered the ward, I saw Tessa lying on the bed, her eyes tightly shut but the rise and fall of her chest filled me with relief.

Eva, Zed, and Gia were in the ward but upon my arrival, they stood up and left the ward.

I moved hesitantly towards her, I reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her forehead. Her skin was cool to touch.

Tessa….please wake upI silently pleaded.

Silence.

“I’m

sorry,

I do believe you. You didn’t have to do that to prove yourself, you mean so much to me and I really hope you can see that. I’ll make things right” I whispered silently, wishing she could

hear me.

After I stared at her a little more, I heaved a sigh and left the ward.

Gabe was not far off from the ward.

“Thank you,” I said to him, he gave a curt nod and I walked out but I could feel his gaze on me throughout. They were hiding something.
