Chapter 10

TESSA’S POV

“Hey hey!” I heard Dylan’s voice say faintly in my head, he’s saying something but I’m not listening, I’m just watching his lips move without hearing a word he’s saying.

“Are you even listening?” He said fed up.

I looked away and held my feverish head in my hands.

“No, no I’m not” I said truthfully.

He sighed and stood up.

“I’ll be leaving now, take care” He said bowing slightly before leaving.

I watched him go with mixed feelings.

Alone with my thoughts and children, I couldn’t shake off the weight of the news he had brought. He had dropped a bombshell on me why was it even a bombshell? Was I seriously expecting him to wait for me? It seemed I had false hope, the entire thing just seemed absurd.

My wolf had gone silent, no doubt in pains and it refused to speak no matter how I tried to communicate to it.

“Daphe?” I said telepathically, she simply whimpered and went silent. I groaned and went into the house before it got completely dark.

A couple of minutes later, the creaking door was pushed open and Gabe walked in, a worn out expression on his face. I could make out his face from the dim part of the room where I sat.

“Tessa, is that you?” He asked.

“You can’t smell me?” I asked weak

He forced a laugh

“Of course I can, I just wanted to hear you speak” He said dropping his satchel on the wooden floor and crashing down on a chair. He must be tired.

“I’ll fix you something” I said getting up.

He motioned me to sit back with a gentle wave of his hands.

“Don’t worry, the pack gave me some food… Bread and meat so we’ll live on that for some days”

I smiled at the mention of bread. Living in the woods was no fun at all.

“I delivered the moonbloom successfully” I informed him

“How was the pack doing?” He asked

I explained what happened while he listened with rapt attention. When I finished, he looked up at me.

“That’s really good, Tessa. I’m glad you put your knowledge to good use. I think you’d make a good healer, do you want to

learn more?”

I thought about the joy the boy family must have felt and smiled at Gabe.

“Yes, I want to learn everything” I said.

“How are your angels?”

I smiled brightly.

“They are asleep, Dylan’s gone by the way” I said

“Do those mischievous children just like to sleep all day?” Gabe asked teasingly to which I forced a laugh. Gabe noticed the unusual atmosphere

“What’s wrong, Tessa” the playful note in his voice was replaced by one filled with worry.

Tears crept up again to my droopy eyes and I sniffled.

“Adrian…” I broke down into body wracking s obs.

Gabe stood up and came to me saying nothing but simply Patting my head.

“What happened?” Gabe’s tone was hard and serious.

“Dylan told me that… Adrian has gotten a new Luna” I said wiping my tears away.

Gabe’s face didn’t show shock as I expected, it was almost like he was expecting it.

“Gabe, am I…am I a fool to believe that I could still make everything right and prove myself?”

Gabe kept silent and heaved a sigh

“No, you’re not.” He finally said

Gabe wiped his face

“Look, Tessa. It’s typical pack politics, I saw it coming” He said.

His words were true but I didn’t answer.

“Tessa, you need to stop digging for answers now, you’re not emotionally prepared for this. You need time to heal completely, don’t cause pain to yourself for nothing” He advised.

I looked away, my heart aching

“You’re probably right. I should forget about Adrian and silvermoon and everything” I said breathlessly

Gabe gave me a weird look.

“Just don’t hurt yourself” He said.

I nodded, not trusting my voice to convey the tumultuous emotions swirling inside me..

“I need to step out for a stroll in the woods” I said getting up.

Gabe looked at the sky.

“It’s getting dark, be careful. Rogues are wild and roaming” He cautioned.

I nodded before slipping out with a cloak, a shawl wrapped tightly round my face revealing only my eyes and a knife hidden in my cloak.

Lost in thoughts, I wandered deeper into the forest but before long, my reverie was shattered by the sound of rustling leaves and snapping twigs.

Instinctively, I pulled out my knife, my wolf on high alert but I couldn’t smell anyone, there was only one type of danger I

couldn’t smell – A wild rogue or a halt blood. I wasn’t keen on meeting either.

Then I saw it, a hooded figure emerging from the Shadows, it’s presence foreboding

“Identify yourself” I said, my voice steady despite the fear coursing through me

The figure remained silent, their features hidden beneath the darkness of their hood. My eyes examined him, there was something familiar about him, he was holding a knife but I could smell blood from him. It unnerved me.

“Answer me!” I insisted, my grip tightening on the hilt of my sword.

Still, the figure said nothing, their silence unnerving me more than any words could. It’s silence made the hair on my skin stand on ends.

“Fine, have it your way” I said lunging forward with my knife, the figure was quick and dodged with ease. Despite my initial advantage. I found myself on the defensive.

“F uck! Why didn’t I learn to fight or at least carry a gun?!” I cussed in my mind.

As our duel reached its climax, a sudden gust of wind swept through the trees, lifting the hood of the figure’s cloak and revealing the face hidden beneath.

Our knives were pointed at each other’s throats as our eyes met and recognition washed over me.

“Fenrir?” I asked

His icy blue eyes crinkled in confusion.

“How do you know my name?” He asked pressing his knife closer to my neck.
