Chapter 18

T

ADRIAN’S POV

I shook Giselle’s firm grasp on my hand away and looked at the heavy oak door behind that door was Tessa. Here. After six

years.

I guess it had taken me that time to think about my actions. When I heard she was the medic, my heart had flew out of my chest and I literally ran there but her expression had thrown me off guard, I couldn’t blame her though- I didn’t expect her to forgive me because I didn’t even forgive myself..

A coc ktail of emotions flowed through me–pain, anger, confusion, guilt, relief and a yearning I had forgotten about a long

time ago.

I looked at Giselle who was staring at me with an indescribable expression.

“I’m busy and need sometime alone, Giselle” I said in a hard tone, I was in no mood to talk to her.

I should probably explain how I met Giselle, she was new in town, she seemed like a nice widow with a 7 year old son.. Honestly, I think back now and I wonder why I chose her to be my Luna, I had felt no attraction to her but she inevitably charmed me, it was a bland relationship. I was pleased nonetheless because it meant I had a heir to the throne even though the child wasn’t mine but this brought up a new question..

Who were the father of the pups? Tessa wouldn’t tell me and I had a nagging feeling they were mine but I was impotent, Da mn it! This is so confusing.

I hurried to my study room and ordered the guard to fetch Will while I rested my aching head.

Will had said I was impotent so why, why did they look like me? Could it be…? No, it couldn’t….

I needed answers and fast, i was loosing my sanity or at least it felt like it.

Will.. he needed thorough questioning, I was having a hard time believing him these days, he behaved suspiciously and it bothered me. He was with Giselle a lot and he obviously didn’t even inform me the nature of the plague in the pack, he told me I was impotent but here I was, in the same building with my children..wait, my children? Were they mine? Could I really have a child?

I knew I still had feelings for Tessa, my wolf’s reaction to her said it all, my wolf had never reacted when I was with Giselle except from letting out disgusted sounds and annoyed noises but I could feel him get excited as I heard Tessa’s voice alone.

Her voice – 6 years ago, it had been loving and kind but now it was full of resentment and I could only imagine what she had been through and my heart ached to think of all the possibilities.

Her words echoed in my head, each syllable laced with a cold indifference that sent shivers down my spine.

“Why, they’re mine of course” She had said, her voice with no emotion, her eyes void and a stormy grey that mirrored the turmoil in my soul.

I know they are yours, Tessa. They’re yours and I’m not here to take them away, I just need answers. My life became a living hell since I threw her out. She was my solid rock and I threw her like she was nothing but a used piece of Kleenex. She deserved better.

Try as I might, I couldn’t get them out of my head – Those children, the three of them, triplets that had a face with an uncanny resemblance to mine and hair the color of spun moonlight, just like Tessa. The resemblance was undeniable and it was left hanging in the air.

I heard fast footsteps and looked up in time to see Will walk in. A wave of anger suddenly crashed over me, how would he explain himself on this one now?.

Will was silent, he stood at the closed door, a scowl etched on his face. He looked up at me and saw the anger in my eyes, his face contorted into one of surprise but quickly morphed into a mask of feigned calmness.

“Yes, Alpha? You called for me?” He said so calmly too calm to be believable.

I tried to control the urge I felt to slash his eyes out with my claws.

“Where were you?” I asked simply.

He shifted uncomfortably

“Well, I was attending to…..”

“Important matters?” I asked

He clicked his tongue..

“Yes..”

“Is there anything more important than the health of the people?” I asked, my tone getting harder.

Will looked up at me and I knew that he knew that he was in for a treat with me.

“Certainly not, I went round the village to check up on the bereaved families” He said quickly.

I crossed my arms.

“Nice, then Will please tell me, do I or do I not deserve to know what’s happening in my pack?” I asked my eyes dark with rage.

He bowed.

“Of course, you….”

I was giving him no breathing space.

“Then why? Why wasn’t I informed that their health was deteriorating badly and the plague was severe?” I said cutting him-

off.

He chewed on the inside of his lips.

“I didn’t want to bother you, Alpha. You know that I want the best for this pack” He said in defense.

I tsked.

“The best?…” I muttered. “Then perhaps you would like to explain the pups?” I said raising a brow.

He looked genuinely confused.

“Forgive me Alpha Adrian, I have seen the children and I must say that they bear a striking resemblance to you” He said.

I felt my eyes roll

“Of course they do and why is that? Could they be my children?” I asked.

There was a slight hesitation.

“Of course not, we both know…”

I banged my hands on the table and felt it shatter under my fist.

“I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING, WILL. YOU TELL ME THAT I’M IMPOTENT AND NOW TESSA’S FREAKING BACK AND SHE HAS THREE PUPS AND THEY ALL LOOK LIKE ME… WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO THINK?” I yelled angrily.

Will looked taken aback by my angry tirade

“Calm down, Alpha Adrian. You’re not yourself right now” He cautioned.

I ran my hands through my hair.

“Hell no, I’m not. I’m having a massive fit right now because everything that is happening out of my control” I said angrily.

Will kept mute just staring at me so I went to him and gripped his shoulders firmly.

“Will, please I just need answers. I need your help, why? Can I have kids?” I asked with clouded eyes.

Will adjusted himself as much as the firm grip on his shoulders would let him and nodded wisely.

“Adrian” He began, addressing me by my name “You….can..not have children ” He said sp ac ing out his words.

I felt the colour drain out of my face.

“Then why…they are my kids, I’m sure of that” I said my head a complete mess.

“Perhaps they are..” Will said.

A flicker of hope rose within me

“Really? Do you think I may have been healed?” I asked.

“No, Alpha. What happened that night must strictly have been a miracle, a blessing from the goddess but you are in fact impotent. I’m sure of that” He said

My eyes misted again.

“How can you be so sure?” I croaked

He freed himself from my grip

“You’ve been with Giselle for one year now. I’m certain you’ve touched her within this time” He said.

my skin crawl – He wasn’t wrong, Giselle had seduced me into bed a couple of times but she had never gotten

I felt

pregnant.

“Right, that’s right” I muttered.

Will smiled forcefully at me.

“Well, Alpha. I’m glad I’ve cleared the air around us. I will go check on the patients now” He said bowing stiffly.

I waved him away and slumped down on a chair as I stared at the heavy oak door again, lost in thoughts.

So, they were my children and not only that, they were a miracle meaning that I may never have kids except them – I felt hot tears of regret cloud my eyes.

“I’m sorry, Tessa. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you” I broke down burying my face in my palms.

No, the Alpha must remain strong who am I kidding? I was tired, I needed support. I wanted to face this situation head on and tackle it like a leader should. I wanted to speak to Tessa and set things right, she would probably not listen and tell me off but it was worth a try.

I took a glass of water from my clustered table and drank it in one gulp. I fished out a bottle of wine from a cabinet and

poured it into the glass and downed it hurriedly.

Realizing I couldn’t get drunk with the heavy atmosphere round the palace, I cursed silently and dropped the glass back in place and buried my head in my hands.

I needed air and fast, I stood up and walked out of the room ignoring all the greetings from maids, sentinels and people in the pack house. I walked briskly to the orchard outside in the night sky.

but not

My eyes glowed dimly In the dark from where I sat and I could make out the voices in the palace from where I sat hers, I couldn’t hear hers. Perhaps she had slept off? I didn’t want to disturb her this night, I would wait till the next morning to talk to her.

Sighing, I looked down at my hands clasped together. A quiet footstep behind me made me alert and I turned back to see a little child staring at me in curiousity.

My heart leaped at the sight of me for I wasn’t just looking into any pups eyes but the innocent eyes of my child.

He was staring at me in silent curiosity and I couldn’t help but wonder if Tessa knew that he was outside by this time.

“Hey, little one.” I waved to him, I couldn’t control the nervousness I felt.

He tilted his neck.

“You look familiar” He finally said and my heart melted at his voice.

“Well, I can’t say for sure. Come, have a seat” I offered motioning to the vacant space on the bench where I sat.

He ski pped over to me and sat down willingly.

“What’s your name?” I asked softly, my eyes glued to his face

“Sky” He said simply not knowing the effect his little words were having on me.

I sniffled and he looked at me in alarm.

“Are you crying, mister?” He asked looking at my face in concern. He reminded of Tessa, he cared greatly for people and I was touched

I laughed nervously and looked down into his searching face.

“No, Sky. I was just surprised to see someone so cute like you” I joked.

He gave a thoughtful sigh and started swinging his tiny legs.

“You should see my brothers, they’re cuter” He said.

I stretched my hand nervously to him and patted his head with shaking palms.

“You’re all cute. Want to be my best friend?” I asked through choking silent s obs.

He looked at me thoughtfully.

“Deal! Wait, wait, can I call you Dad? I want to call you that” He said looking at me through large puppy eyes.

I ruffled his hair a tad more confident and smiled.

“Of course, I would love that. You’ll be like my sidekick” I said to him

I felt a familiar scent pr ick my nose.

“Sky, what are you doing out here?!” A stern voice sounded and I turned round to look at Tessa who was looking at Sky with

a reprimanding look.

“Tes..” I began to say in his defense when she cut me off.

“Back inside, Sky” She said in a hard tone to sky who pouted and ran off.

I couldn’t believe that she didn’t even want me near my children.

“Tessa…” I croaked standing up but thought better of saying it.

“Stay away from my children” She said in a hard tone to me before turning on her heels and walking away.

Leaving me – the way I left her 6 years ago, now I knew how it felt.
