Chapter 30

I wake up in the middle of the night with a startle, I try to sit up as gently as possible and take a deep breath. I realize I must have had a nightmare and I try to recall what it’s about but my memory fails, I can’t seem to remember anything from the dream and I instantly conclude that it couldn’t have been a nightmare about Zephyr.

I’ve never forgotten a nightmare about Zephyr no matter how hard I try so it seems that since I can’t recall this one, it definitely couldn’t have been of Zephyr and thus, not worth my worry.

I shiver slightly as the wind blows through my open curtains, instantly making the room chilly. I must have forgotten to close the windows again. I pick up an extra blanket and wrap it around my body until I’m feeling snug again.

I sit back for a bit, feeling extremely lazy but when I’m sure I’ve gathered enough strength, I get up from the bed with some difficulty and move towards the window with the blanket still wrapped around me.

I grab hold of the window panes, closing them shut when my eyes catch sight of a familiar figure.

I stay still, squinting to see the figure that is moving in the darkness. My younger self would have cowered in fear, thinking it was a ghost because this person’s movements are swift. It’s clearly a woman and she has a scarf wrapped around her face.

I don’t know why but I feel like I’ve seen this person, if only I could get a glimpse of her face.

‘Tara, are you awake? Are you seeing this?’ I questioned, rousing my sleepy wolf.

“Seriously Evelyn, you should try to afford yourself a little more rest. Everything you do affects me as well, you know. How can I be asleep when you’re awake?” Tara says grudgingly but I don’t have time for her babbling.

I certainly would have climbed out the window if I wasn’t heavily pregnant, I want to see who this veiled woman is and what she’s doing outside at this unholy hour of the night.

She stands not too far from my window, in the foggy darkness, as if waiting for someone and I also wait patiently and discreetly beside my window, hiding myself so I wouldn’t be spotted if she happened to look backwards for some reason.

As if on a cue, a man arrives from the darkness and approaches her. They hug passionately and it almost seems like the woman is unwilling to let go but they part eventually.

The woman finally removes the shawl from her head and I’m left in awe at who I see. It’s none other than little miss Margallo. I should have known, only someone like her could do something so suspicious.

But then, a thought strikes me. Margallo is Kayden’s mate and he’s supposed to officially mate with her in a few days, just after the big birthday celebration that’s going to take place in the palace so why on Earth is she meeting up with this strange man in secret and why did they hug each other intimately like that? I gulp, sincerely hoping that my instincts are wrong and this is just but a big misunderstanding.

I perk up my ears, trying my best to listen in and see if I would be able to hear any of what they were about to discuss.

“I’ve missed you Jared, it’s been torture without you. It’s only been a day but I’m already sick of these people, they’re complete idiots.” Margallo complains and I feel my anger rise.

How dare she speak of her hosts in that manner? I’m starting to doubt if she’s actually a princess or a rogue.

“It’s OK sweetheart, it won’t be long. You just have to endure these people until your birthday party, it’ll only be a few days and our mission will be complete.” The man by the name of Jared assured.

“I’m honestly running out of patience with them, especially with that good for nothing idiot that’s supposed to be my mate. Can you believe that he raised his hand to me today? And all because of a fat mute whore?” Margallo enlists and her words are so full of venom that they leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

How can someone be so vulgar? And a princess at that? There’s really no justice in this life.

If I thought I’d gotten enough shocks for that night, I was certainly in for a bigger surprise. The strange man named Jared bridges the distance between and takes Margallo’s lips in a hot k**s. They make out fiercely and I’m tempted to look away as a wave of nausea rushes up my stomach.

“Calm down Evelyn, take a deep breath or you’ll blow our cover.” Tara reminds me and I take a deep breath, tightening my throat until the nauseous feeling goes away.

They break apart after a few minutes. “It’s OK, I want you to know that I’ll always be here for you. I promise you that it’ll only be for a short period and we’ll finally get everything we want. Just try to keep up with them for the time being and don’t forget to be careful. We don’t want you rousing any suspicion, instead you should be currying their favour.” Jared warns and Margallo frowns.

“I won’t suck up to those pathetic people for any reason whatsoever. They can go to hell for all I care.” She says stubbornly and Jared sighs.

“Do whatever you want, baby but be careful or our master plan will be ruined and all our efforts will come to naught.” He said and she nodded, agreeing with him for once.

I’m too stunned at what’s happening to realize that I’m holding onto the window pane too tightly and that the metal had dug into my flesh, bruising it.

“Alright baby but I miss you so much. Come inside with me and let’s have a quickie.” Margallo pleads and I feel b***d rushing to my face.

So everything I’ve witnessed is actually true, Margallo’s cheating on Kayden with this man. And they seem to be up to something suspicious and sinister and I can’t help but wonder what it could be.

“You know that’s not possible right now darling, we had s*x two days ago. Besides, you’re not in Prime Wood territory anymore, what if someone hears or sees us. I’m sorry but we can’t take that risk Margallo. I have to go now before anyone notices that I’m here. I promise you that I’ll give you so much pleasure when we meet again that you’ll be unable to forget it.” He said and Margallo pouted.

“OK. I’ll let you go this time.” She succumbed and I heaved a sigh, not sure I would be able to handle anymore of those raunchy words.

“Don’t forget the plan Margallo. Everything has been working out well so far, we can’t afford to make a mistake now. We’ll unleash terror on them very soon and it’ll be on the birthday of someone as lovely as you.” Jared said the first part with so much contempt, the hatred clear in his voice.

“I’ll see you again soon boo, I’ll try to keep in touch. I’ll send you a letter soon, probably before my birthday celebrations. Hopefully, everything will work out the way we want and we can finally get rid of these scumbags.” Margallo said and a chill ran down my spine.

It was a miracle that I was holding on so tightly to the window because my vision blurred and I nearly lost my balance as what I’d just heard left me shaken.

So much was going on right in this palace and no one had an inkling about it. Margallo was having an affair with some strange man and as if that wasn’t enough, she had very ill intentions.

I had known that Margallo’s intentions had never been good because her behavior had already said a lot but I thought it was just her being a brat.

I had no idea that she was busy planning something very dangerous with her lover, it’s disheartening that I don’t know what it is yet.

All I know is that they have something bad planned out for the members of this family and they were going to execute it on the day of Margallo’s birthday party, which was taking place in only a week’s time and that really didn’t leave me with much time.

How do I tell everyone? Who do I tell? Even if I do let everyone know of what’s going on, will they believe me? Margallo seems like a conniving woman and she’ll definitely be a convincing liar. More importantly, what do I tell them? I don’t have any details yet of what Margallo and her lover’s plan might be. I also don’t have any evidence to back up my claims so would they really believe anything I try to tell them? What should I do?

Once again, I’ve managed to replace myself in yet another dilemma.
