What?! I almost can’t believe my ears. Richard had almost hit Elsie and there was that piece about him causing Margallo to have a miscarriage when he was angry? How is that even possible? When had Margallo been pregnant? Just what is going on here? I can’t handle any more of this mystery so I know it’s finally time to make my presence known, they sure have a lot of explaining to do.

“It’s OK, it’ll be alright. I have to admit that Richard does replace it hard to maintain self control when he’s angry and that’s why he tries his best not to get angry easily. He used to be violent whenever he got angry when we were younger but after a series of punishments from our father, he learnt to control his temper because he knew he was going to become a leader someday. I honestly thought he had overcome it because he’s been calm for a long time. I’m sure he didn’t mean to raise his hand to you, I’m pretty sure it’s just the pressure that Margallo has mounted on all of us.

Besides, he loves you so he would never intentionally do anything to hurt you. His love for you will also be his limit and his self control. You really don’t have to be scared of Richard, you know him better than this…………..” Kayden paused when the corner of his eyes darted to the side and he became aware of my presence.

Why did he stop talking? Why are they hiding this from me?

I had been deliberating if to show myself or not and that’s why I’ve heard much more. I’m sure that if I had come out of my hiding place earlier, I might never have known that something was wrong.

I gave Kayden a knowing look, as I stood and stared at him with my arms akimbo. I demanded an explanation from him with my eyes but he only looked down and remained silent.

Elsie wiped her tears and quickly approached me. “Evelyn, you should be in bed. You have just given birth recently, you shouldn’t be walking around and being made to face any stress. If you needed something you could have asked Emily to bring it to you.” Elsie said, trying to change the topic but I’m definitely not letting this go. We’re supposed to be family so why are they treating me like a stranger? If she really considers me as family then she should trust me enough to tell me about her problems instead of trying to hide them.

I remained unmoving and kept giving her the stink eye. She realized that I’d already heard a lot and I wasn’t willing to let go of this until I got a proper explanation so she sighed and finally opened up.

Her next action took me by surprise. She grabbed me in a hug and cried on my shoulder, hugging me as much as her rotund belly could allow.

“I’m sorry Evelyn, I’m sorry we had to keep this from you but it was beyond our control. Please don’t be mad at Kayden, I asked him not to tell you about anything because the doctor advised it would be safer if you were made to avoid any form of stress.” She broke the hug and took both of my hands in hers.

“Come sit.” She said and directed me towards two seats.

“Well……….” She began, looking to Kayden to ascertain whether it would be OK to tell me whatever’s wrong. Kayden nodded his approval and she sighed before finally narrating everything that had happened.

I could hardly control my shock on different accounts as Elsie told me everything that had transpired between them and Margallo when they’d gone to confront her about poisoning the wine.

I sighed, this really is a sticky situation. It’s no wonder Elsie and even Richard seem so helpless against Margallo’s demands.

I’d heard of it in school but couldn’t study it much as Zephyr’s punishment of turning me into a slave had cut short my education.

The wolf council was the legal body in our world. It was the only institution that held more power than even the strongest or most powerful Alpha.

But it only came to power or gave judgements for major issues, like problems, rivalry or enmity between Alphas. Take for example, if an Alpha of one pack had done an unnecessary evil against another Alpha, whether they were at war or not, the Alpha that had been wronged could take the other Alpha to court where the matter would be judged and when necessary the offended Alpha would be granted an opportunity to punish the offending Alpha (punishments like taking people from his pack to be slaves, taking a part of his territory, declaring war against him or just taking something from him that was close to his heart, anything or anyone except his Luna or immediate family member) and if the offender refused to accept the punishment, the consequences were bitter. Such an Alpha could be demoted or even exiled.

The Wolf court came into power a few hundred years ago and it came at a time when it was needed the most. Our forefathers weren’t all after peace and love and really didn’t care about the safety or wellbeing of their packs. They were more focused on gaining more power and territory and fought for more of it.

Alphas attacked each other’s packs without warning just for the ability to subdue the other pack and become stronger or be known as the supreme Alpha. It caused a lot of merciless killing and unnecessary death and it was glaringly obvious that if such behavior were to go on, it would only be a matter of time before we’d go extinct, having killed everyone in their caricature quest for power and thus, the wolf council was formed.

It was formed by three of the most powerful Alphas and one Vampire. Yes, you heard right. It still feels surreal to me that a vampire had actually stepped in to save our existence when both species had been known to be enemies for centuries. I guess he was different and had the heart for justice alone.

Vampires possess strong magic, they’ve always been known to be accustomed with the dark arts and thus, he bestowed some of his powers on the three Alphas after they’d sworn their loyalty and dedication to the cause with their b***d. This was to ensure that none of them would deviate and be carried away by the new found power. The magic also granted them the power of immortality so they wouldn’t have to give up their powers due to death.

It was not easy to curtail the senseless killing and actually stop and punish some bloodthirsty Alphas but they were able to succeed because of their powers.

The Alphas had to give up their position in order to serve our species as the guardians and protectors of all that is right and just. They established their institution, the wolf court in which all Alphas were judged regardless of how powerful they were.

The wolf court helped to keep power struggles in check and maintain peace between packs. They also gave the right for females to become the Alpha after their father but before becoming the Alpha, they would have to take a mate if they already didn’t have one. Their mate would be known as the Alpha and uphold their honour but only they would truly rule their pack.

A Luna could also become an Alpha after the death of her mate but only under two circumstances, one, if the Alpha had no surviving relatives and two, if he had no children before his death so it rarely ever happens.

The wolf court only handles cases between Alphas and not between pack members or wolves of the lower hierarchy because if they did that, it would be a deliberate effort to steal the Alpha’s power away.

Because the Alpha only has control over everyone else in his pack and thus, could grant any punishment he deemed fit and that’s why despite how badly Zephyr treated me for years, he was never called out or even punished. Who would even care anyway, since I was nothing but a slave, the object of everyone’s hatred.

The Alpha also has the right to punish wolves from other packs if they wronged him as long as they were not the Alpha, even if they were the Alpha’s children and that’s why Richard could have easily punished Margallo if he wanted.

But Margallo’s threat could result to more than we bargained for because if Alpha Turner took Alpha Richard to court for the rape and assault of his daughter, the consequences would be disastrous. I know Margallo, she’s the mistress of pretense and she could fool anyone if she actually wanted to.

Her crime of trying to poison Richard would be dismissed as self defense if she’s able to prove that Alpha Richard actually raped her when he didn’t.

I can’t let this happen, such a disaster cannot take place under any circumstance. What would Elsie do without Richard? She’s just angry with him now, I’m sure she won’t be able to handle it if Alpha Richard was punished by the wolf council for something he never actually did.

I have to do something about this, for Elsie’s and all our sakes. This will be my way of paying my debt of gratitude. I have to talk to Margallo and convince her otherwise.

Her heart was broken and she went through immense emotional pain and I really understand her now because I can relate. Zephyr’s actions traumatized me and I can say that I haven’t truly recovered from them but I didn’t let it turn me evil, I instead try to fight it everyday. She could also fight the pain and be good if she truly wanted.

I have to have an audience with Margallo. I don’t know why and despite how impossible it seems, I have a feeling that I will be able to get through to her.
