Kayden’s POV

“Oh shit!” She cursed. “Now you see what you’ve caused? We wouldn’t be in this mess if only you’d listened to me instead of behaving like a dunce.” She said with ragged breath as she brought out twin swords that glittered in the moonlight.

“Oh my, so the little girl isn’t that little. You should know that it’s not safe to play with knives, you could get hurt.” The second Vampire said and his tone disgusted me to no end.

“How dare you speak to me that way, you’ll pay for this. We’ve had enough of your reign of terror.” The girl said and lunged towards them with the swords but they were too quick, even for her. They easily dodged her attacks but surprisingly didn’t retaliate.

She continued attacking albeit unsuccessfully while they just dodged it and laughed at her while she panted like who’d just ran a marathon. They both looked like they were having fun. She was like the prey and they were the predators that were playing with and teasing, giving her a little hope for escape, wanting her to try her best and tire herself out just for fun so they would deliver the blow at the last minute, when she least expected it.

“Are you just going to stand there like a coward? Come over here and help me!” She screamed at me, panting and my formerly paralyzed senses instantly awoke. I’d just previously been standing there like a spectator and let a woman try to fight off two b***d sucking menaces all on her own. What the hell is wrong with me? Has becoming human made me both weak and inconsiderate?

I instantly jumped into action. I took on one Vampire while she took the other, though it was hard to see in the dark, I was able to make out their figures and at least dodge their attacks.

“You silly humans really think you can fight us, eh?” One of the vampires questioned humorously.

“We may not have your type of power at our disposal but the strong will to fight to the death is greater than any magic powers.” The lady said and I honestly started to admire her. It’s already obvious that she’s a human girl and she’s against the Vampires. I can already tell that she’s a vampire hunter from her weapons and the way she wields them.

The vampire that had previously spoken burst into laughter and she took the chance while he was distracted. She dug one of her blades deep into the vampire’s chest and twisted it repeatedly, he gasped and glared at her viciously.

“This is not the end of this.” He growled, his eyes turning red. “It definitely is. Now go burn in hell, you monster.” She cursed and drew out the sword that had been embedded in the vampire’s chest.

B***d poured out of his chest immensely and he fell to the ground and g*****d before turning into dust which was quickly carried away by the wind.

“How dare you?!” The other Vampire growled and lunged at the girl very quickly. I could see him shoot out his retractable claw-like nails and I knew that he was trying to do mortal damage to her.

She had saved my life so I couldn’t let anything happen to her. I jumped in and pushed her aside just quick enough for his claws to dig into my back, ripping my shirt and scratching my back very deeply.

I g*****d as the pain of the injury hit me like a rock, I fell down, my body reverberating in immense pain, the smell of b***d filled the air and I clearly heard the Vampire salivate.

“I love the smell of your b***d, it has a certain tinge to it, I’ll really enjoy drinking from you.” He said with a sneer and I soon heard his footsteps approach me. I tried to get up but as I did, the pain in my back intensified and I fell back down.

I opened my eyes once more and saw the girl getting up from the floor. She had a small cut on the side of her head, probably from the fall but it was at least better than the wound that would have been inflicted on her.

“Get away from him, you monster. Get away from him now.” She yelled.

“Woah there, sweetheart. You’ll get a turn, don’t worry and I promise to finish you off slowly.” He said sinisterly and I bit down on my l*p to prevent myself from groaning when I felt his claw pressing on my wound.

“I said leave him now.” She warned once more. “And what will you do if I don’t?” He questioned nonchalantly.

“Get down.” She yelled and I kicked the Vampire, making him quickly withdraw his hand from my back.

Everything happened so fast that it almost seemed like a movie. The woman threw a knife towards my direction and I closed my eyes, thinking it was aimed at me but when I felt nothing and instead heard a heavy thud, I opened my eyes and sat up before turning back just in time to see the Vampire on the floor with a knife in his throat, turning into dust.

No matter how hard I tried, my heart wouldn’t stop beating so fast.

The woman picked up her sword and walked up to me. She picked up the knife and kept it back in her thigh holster.

“Are you OK?” She questioned as she gave me a hand which I took quickly. “Yeah.” I said and g*****d as the pain in my back increased as I stood up to my feet. “Just a little scratch, that’s all. Are you OK?” I questioned back.

“You call that a scratch? Your back seems like it’s been sliced and you’re bleeding profusely, it’ll probably scar. I’m just glad we’re alive. I’m fine, thanks for asking.” She said and wiped her forehead.

“I’m sorry.” I apologized. “For what?” She questioned. “For putting your life in danger. You offered to help me in the beginning but I refused and kept you here. It’s only because of me that you got in this mess. If I’d come with you then none of this would have happened.” I apologized profusely.

“It’s alright, it’s really not your fault. It was normal for you to decline going with some random woman. I would have done the exact same thing if I were in your position, especially since we’re in turbulent times.” She said with a laugh.

“You’re not some random woman, you saved my life and you got hurt because of it.” I said and pointed to the small gash on her head which was bleeding a little.

“Oh this? This is nothing compared to what I’ve been through. The vampires are merciless creatures, the creator was kind today. Things could have turned out much worse but the truth remains that I’m not afraid to die.

There’s not much of our kind left in this Kingdom so I’m ready to risk my life in order to save any human in trouble.” She said courageously and I really admired her at that moment. Not many women possess the kind of courage she’s shown.

“Thank you for saving me.” I was thankful. “You’re welcome. But what were you doing out at this time? It’s already past curfew and the Vampires are roaming the city so why did you come out? Didn’t you know they’d kill you if you were caught?” She questioned.

“Let’s just say I’m not from around here.” I said and kept my gaze to the floor.

“We’ll talk about that later. Let’s leave now, you’re bleeding so much. If we stay here too long, the smell of your b***d might attract more Vampires and that’s the last thing we want. You saw how difficult it was to kill them. Plus, I have to dress your wound before it gets infected. You’ll have to come with me to a safe place.” She said and waited for my answer, as if seeking my approval.

“You don’t even have to ask me to come with you, you literally just saved my life so I at least owe you my gratitude and my trust. I’ll go wherever you take me.” The words just slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them and she giggled while I bit down on my tongue to stop myself from spluttering any more nonsense.

“Alright, let’s go quickly. It’ll be dawn soon.” She said and placed my arm over the back of her neck so she could help me walk.

But just then, we heard someone approach us in the dark and my fears rose once more.
