Rejecting My Lycan Mate: Rejecting Your Rejection (Three Lycan Kingdoms Series Book 1) -
Rejecting My Lycan Mate: Chapter 50
Dimitri’s POV
My heart was hammering inside my chest.
I was lying on her bed, waiting for her to finish showering and come lay beside me. I couldn’t believe that the day I’d been waiting for finally arrived. She finally knew. I could finally hold her close for as long as I wanted to. I could finally kiss her. I could finally call her my love, my princess, and my queen. I could finally tell her how much I loved her. I could finally let everyone know she was mine and mine only.
The bathroom door opened and she walked out, making my heart skip a beat.
“Come on, love,” I said softly as I lifted the blanket so she could get under.
I was lying on top of the blankets. I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable.
She furrowed her eyebrows and approached me slowly.
“You will be cold,” she mumbled quietly as she sat on the bed and looked at me.
I had to bite my cheeks to stop myself from grinning. I wouldn’t be cold. I was a Lycan werewolf. I could sleep out in the snow, but if my queen said that I would be cold if I didn’t get under the blankets with her, who the hell was I to argue with her?
“Are you saying that I can get under the blankets too?” I asked, making her blush.
She nodded and pulled the blankets over her body. I leaned in to kiss her cheek and smiled. I stood up and removed the blankets. I thought about removing my shirts and my sweats, but that would surely be too much too fast. I was lucky that she even allowed me to get under the blankets with her.
I laid down and pulled her closer to me. I buried my nose into her hair and took a deep breath. Her scent relaxed my muscles and made my heart race. She leaned her head on my chest and wrapped her arms around my torso. I was in heaven. This was all I ever wanted.
‘Dimitri?’ Skol called me just as I felt Maddie tense up ‘We have a problem.’
My heart started racing. I lifted Maddie’s head so I could look at her face. Her eyes were wide and filled with fear.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, trying so fucking hard not to scream.
“It’s Skye,” Maddie mumbled, making me furrow my eyebrows.
My heart was going to jump out of my chest. Was something wrong with Skye?
“What?” I asked, my voice laced with fear. “Is something wrong with her, Maddie?”
She didn’t answer me. She just stared at me with confusion and fear written all over her face.
“Maddie?” I called her, trying to breathe through the panic that was consuming my body.
‘She said that she won’t shift,’ Skol said, making me freeze. ‘Maddie was apologizing to her for not giving her the opportunity to shift when Skye said that she wouldn’t have shifted anyway.’
I furrowed my eyebrows.
What? Why?!
“Skye doesn’t want to shift,” Maddie said, her voice trembling. “She doesn’t want to…”
Her voice broke and she started breathing heavily.
Fuck!
“Breathe, Maddie,” I said as I cupped her cheeks. “Breathe, love, come on. We will figure it out.”
‘Why, Skol?’ I asked my wolf. ‘Talk to her!’
‘I did,’ Skol said calmly. ‘She said that she can’t let anyone see her yet. She said that she is protecting Maddie by staying hidden.’
What the fuck? I was even more confused than before. I focused on Maddie who was still having trouble breathing.
“Breathe, my love,” I said softly as I leaned in and kissed her cheek. “It’s going to be okay, Maddie.”
She gulped and shook her head.
“She said that she is protecting me,” Maddie said, her voice raspy and laced with pain. “I don’t understand. Protecting me from what?”
I took a deep breath and tried to calm my racing heart down. I needed to stay calm to help Maddie.
I wanted to scream and growl. What did Skye need to protect her from? Was my mate in danger? Why didn’t Skye tell me then? I could protect Maddie? I could protect her from everything.
‘She can’t tell you, Dimitri,’ Skol said. ‘You can’t know. No one can know.’
He sounded weirdly calm. Did he know?
‘Yes,’ he said. ‘I know and I won’t say anything. Skye is doing the right thing, Dimitri. No one can see her.’
My heart was going to jump out of my chest.
‘Don’t question us, please,’ Skol continued. ‘Just know that we are doing the best thing for her. We are protecting her.’
‘From what?!’ I screamed at him.
Skol was silent for a few moments.
‘Focus on Maddie,’ he said calmly. ‘She needs you.’
I wanted to scream at him, but I knew that there was no use in it. He was right. I needed to focus on my mate.
“Listen to me, Maddie,” I said softly as I leaned in and caressed her cheek. “I talked to Skol and he agrees with Skye. He didn’t tell me why she doesn’t want to shift, but I trust him. There is a reason why Skye won’t shift and she will tell us when she is ready.”
Maddie was still panicking.
“But what will I do without my wolf?” she cried out. “How will I…”
She stopped talking and gulped.
“You have me,” I said. “You have Skol. We will never let anything happen to you, okay? You will need to be by my side all the time from now on, am I clear?”
I wasn’t going to let her walk around without her wolf when there was a hoard of rogues at my borders.
“Am I clear, Maddie?” I repeated my question after she didn’t answer.
She nodded and wrapped her arms around my neck. I hugged her tightly.
“We will figure it out, love,” I said softly as I kissed her temple. “I am here for you, Maddie. I am here for everything, my love.”
“Thank you,” she mumbled, her voice quiet and raspy.
“There is no need to thank me,” I said as I pressed her closer to me. “You are the greatest gift that the Goddess has ever given me, my love. I will always be here for you and I will never stop loving you.”
I reached behind me and turned the lamp off.
“Try to get some sleep, princess,” I mumbled as I held her tighter. “I am here and I am not leaving you.”
She snuggled closer to me and placed a small kiss on my chest. My heart almost exploded with happiness.
I smiled and closed my eyes.
I didn’t know what Skye was protecting her from, but I would replace out and I would make sure that the threat was gone. I wouldn’t let anyone hurt her. I wouldn’t let anyone touch her.
She was mine to love and mine to protect and I would do both until the day I took my last breath.
