Return of the Prodigy Chapter 124

The loud smashing was followed by Gemma's desperate shouting, "Stop! Stop this instant! How could you wreck the place? We just renovated it."

Gemma was unable to make the building management stop. The sounds of shattering continued.

"Pull her aside."

Gemma was kicked aside with a thud. She shouted in agony, "I... I'm going to sue you. How could you bully an old woman like me?"

A man interrupted and said, "Sue all you want. There are plenty of other things I can do to you. I can keep cutting your power and dump trash at your door. It doesn't pay to get on the bad side of the building management."

The moment they heard the commotion, Katie and Adam quickly dashed into the apartment. Katie inadvertently slipped, so she screamed as she fell backward.

Adam quickly helped to support Katie. When he lowered his head and looked at the ground, he was infuriated. The corridor was covered with glass shards and the glass doors had been smashed to smithereens. "I'm okay. Go help my mother," said Katie anxiously.

Adam promptly carried Katie into the apartment. Two men were holding Gemma down while another stood in front of Gemma and smiled threateningly as he raised his hand.

"Do you want to die?" shouted Adam furiously before putting Katie down.

Adam kicked the man standing in front of Gemma before he slapped aside the two men holding onto her. He reached his hand out to help support Gemma and asked in concern, "Mom, are you all right?" Gemma's hair was scattered, and her face was swollen. Footprints could be seen on her disheveled clothes.

Gemma was unconcerned about her injuries. Instead, she said, "I'm fine. Stop them! They want to destroy your apartment."

Adam turned to look at the apartment. Everything was in chaos. The furniture was lying everywhere, and there were holes in the walls. Some of the paintings and toys were completely destroyed.

The renovation for the apartment had just been completed, but everything had been reduced to rubble and was now in an inhabitable condition!

Adam was furious. He had planned on moving in soon with Katie and Annie, but it was impossible to do it now.

"Do you have a death wish?" Adam narrowed his eyes as he looked at them murderously. He promptly went towards the men and kicked them so hard that he sent them flying.

Katie was equally furious. It was their brand new apartment, so it was only natural for her to feel upset.

"How could you do this to my apartment?"

The man at the lead stood up clutching his stomach. He roared in agony, "I'm the building manager of the estate. Did you get approval from us before you renovated?"

Katie glared at the man and retorted, "Nonsense. I already told the renovation company to submit the renovation plans and paid the renovation deposit, and it was approved by the building management."

The building manager laughed and said, "I don't recall signing off on the application."

"You liar!" Katie was infuriated. She was certain the renovation company had submitted the renovation plans to the building management. Since the paperwork was already filed, she was unable to produce any other evidence.

The building manager knew Katie had no hard evidence, and there was nothing she could do about it. He sneered as he glanced at her completely unafraid.

Adam stepped forward and said in fury, "How dare you? This is my apartment. Why do I need your approval to renovate it?"

The building manager retorted angrily, "Everything in the estate is under my supervision including your apartment! Just because you own a big apartment here, doesn't mean you can call the shots. Since you have renovated the place without prior approval, it is well within my rights to remove everything!"

Adam smiled angrily. "Within your rights? Who is your boss? Call him and tell him to get his ass over. Let me show you what real influence looks like."

The building manager burst out laughing and said mockingly, "Who the hell do you think you are? Are you even fit to speak to my boss? Didn't I tell you? I call the shots in this estate. I demand that you remove the fixtures and fittings and return the apartment to its original state. I tried to tell you nicely, but you refused to follow the rules and even attacked us. Now, you have to compensate us for our medical bills. Otherwise, I'll call the cops and send you to prison."

His men had already stood up, but they promptly sprawled back onto the ground and clutched their heads as they howled in pain.

"Ow! My head hurts so bad."

"Me too! Where am I? What's going on? Do I have amnesia?"

The building manager smiled smugly as he looked at Adam. He was sure there was nothing Adam could do about it.

Gemma trembled in fury. "You're shameless. The two of them were perfectly fine just moments ago. You are just pretending. I'm going to call the police."

The building manager watched mildly as Gemma took out her phone to call the cops, but he made no attempt to stop her. He was clearly unafraid of her threat. Adam said deeply, "Did you even bribe the police? I see you came well prepared. Did you say it was Ocean Group? Since you refuse to call your boss, I will do it!" When the neighbors heard Adam, they came over and tried to talk him out of it.

"Don't do it. You can't call them."

"Ocean Group is a security company with hundreds of men under its employment. You can't afford to piss them off."

"Ocean Group is crooked. If you want to do any renovation, you have to pay them renovation fees. Otherwise, they won't let you proceed. Did you pay?"

Adam was stunned. It seemed the problem ran deeper than he expected.

He looked at Katie.

Katie nodded and said, "They called me asking for money. Owners of small and large apartments have to fork out 300 and 500 respectively. Since we bought an entire floor, they want fifteen hundred from us, but I didn't pay them." The building manager sneered. Since they refused to pay up, there would be consequences.

Adam frowned and asked, "What are renovation fees? Is it something like the renovation deposit?"

"That's different. Renovation fees are something like a bribe. As long as you pay up, you can renovate the apartment. Otherwise, he will send men to stop people from renovating. You won't even be able to send raw materials into your apartment. They can come up with all kinds of excuses to prevent you from renovating. They often claim raw material shipments will damage the flooring. They might accuse you of causing a trash pile-up. They might even claim someone lodged a complaint against you. Oh yes. Adam finally realized what they were trying to do. The renovation fees were no different from the protection money demanded by gangsters. They were absolute bullies!

Adam sneered coldly, "He probably wants to make an example of us or extort us. The building management around here is terrible. Why hasn't anyone retaliated? Why didn't it get changed?"

A neighbor promptly explained, "We tried setting up a homeowners' committee, but the committee head was beaten up until his leg broke the next day. Also, the building management cut the power to his apartment and locked his gates.

"We wanted to tell the media about it, but building management refused to let them enter, so we couldn't take photo evidence.

"I suggest you just forget about it. You spent so much money renovating your apartment, but everything got destroyed."

"Adam, why don't we forget about it?" Gemma tried to convince Adam out of it.

Adam narrowed his eyes and said coldly, "Mom, don't worry. I will make sure they set the place in order. Since they have beaten you up, I will personally ensure their boss kneels and apologizes to you. I don't care who owns the company, but the building management of the estate has to go!"

Adam took out his phone and called Black Dragon. "Investigate Ocean Group immediately. I want the owner of the company to appear at the Greenhouse District in ten minutes. If he is late by even a minute, destroy the company!"
