Revenge Against My Ex-husband
Chapter 159 The Child Is Missing

Nathan agreed to her request and left. After tucking Eden to sleep, Irene stood by the door of the White family and glanced around nervously, checking her phone every few minutes. Why hadn't Nathan called her? Had something really happened to Edric?

All of a sudden, the phone rang. Irene answered it immediately, "Nathan, have you found him?"

"I'm not Nathan!" Edric said in a low voice.

"It's you. Where are you? John is looking for you everywhere..."

"Irene, I have something to tell you," Edric interrupted her. "Can you not marry Nathan?"

Irene was silent for a moment. "No!"

"Are my mistakes really unforgivable? Can't you just forgive me this once?"

Irene let his question hang. Was Edric truly that unforgivable? She had loathed him before and thought him inexcusable. But after knowing the truth, her hatred for him had abated. She had considered getting back together with him for Eden's sake; she really had. But with Margaret hovering around, Irene just didn't see a future for them. With a calm voice, she said, "You knew that we did not hold a future together, yet you still refused to let us go. What are you if not a fool?"

"We have no future together?" Edric let out a wretched laugh. "Irene, I've never forgotten my promise to you. Never. Did you know that?"

"So what? We can't go back!" she thought. Cold tears dripped down her face. She wiped them away. "Edric, I'm almost 30 years old. I'm no longer that girl who believed in fantasies and promises, you know? Whatever you had said is long gone, and I don't remember any of it anymore!"

What she meant was she had long dismissed his promise to her. Edric looked up at the sky, his heart coursed with bitterness. "Irene, I was all for my pretense to be generous. Though I do wish you abundant happiness, I just can't bring myself to do it. I'm already a pile of garbage in your heart anyway, I suppose I could make myself look worse, no? I hope you and Nathan won't be happy because only I can give you happiness!"

Hearing what he had said, Irene was surprisingly not offended at all. "Edric, I don't need your blessing. You'd better return to your hotel as soon as possible. John is everywhere looking for you. He is very anxious. Call him back! Or tell me where you are and I'll ask him to go get you."

Her indifferent voice spread in Edric's ears and crushed his hope into smithereens. She was not the slightest bit unshaken. As expected, she didn't care about him. He reached out his hand to sweep away the tears at the corner of his eyes. "I'll go back right away!"

The phone call ended abruptly...

Irene stood in the living room in a daze, her phone still in her hand. Six years ago on a night like this, Edric had stood in front of her firmly and asked for her hand in marriage. He'd told her she would only be happy if she married him. But now, he was wishing for her the opposite, claiming that he was the only one who could give her happiness!

How ironic! "Edric, my life will not be controlled by you. I will show you that even without you, I can very well be happy!"

It didn't take long for Nathan to come back. He stated that Edric had returned to the hotel, and Irene felt relieved at it. They then called it a night.

The next morning, Nathan and Irene drove to the marriage registration department. Because of their identities, they weren't required to make an appointment like regular people. They just had to wait to be notified.

The staff member informed them that all the procedures could be completed immediately before handing them a form and asking them to fill it out. A marriage license application in Mencodia was equivalent to a form filled at that in Haverland. The staff member noticed that they hadn't brought a witness along and reminded Nathan that a witness needed to be present. Therefore, Nathan called Britney.

After the form was completed, they had to collect the wedding certificate. The procedure in Mencodia was slightly different than in Haverland. Here they had to have a ceremony: the two parties had to make their vows in front of a minister and exchange wedding rings before the witness signed on their marriage license.

Irene and Nathan were brought into a small room, and the ceremony was presided over by the staff member who registered the information. Seeing that Irene was a foreigner, he asked her if she spoke the local language; if not, they could get someone else to ordain the marriage.

Irene said that she could understand the language; thus, the staff member commenced the ceremony. Irene and Nathan just repeated after what he said, which was basically not unlike a priest's speech. Halfway through the oath, the housekeeper called, "Young Master Nathan, bad news, Eden is missing!"

Irene and Nathan were shocked. They could care less about the ceremony as they excused themselves and ran out. Along the way, their anxiety was peaking. When they reached the White Mansion, the housekeeper was already waiting by the door. "What's going on?" they asked simultaneously.

"Young Master Nathan, I'm sorry! It's my fault. I don't know what happened too. Eden was playing in the house, so I went to make a cup of tea. When I returned, he had already disappeared. I thought he was just being naughty and went into hiding. I looked around but I couldn't replace him. So I called you," answered the housekeeper truthfully.

"Check the CCTV right now!" Nathan immediately ordered. On the monitor, it showed that while the housekeeper was making tea, Eden had picked up the phone in a living room. They had no idea who he was speaking to. But, after the call ended, he went out of the White Mansion alone. There was a car parked outside the gates. As soon as Eden left the house, someone jumped out, picked Eden up, and left in the

car.

"Who on earth is this person? Why did he take Eden away?" Nathan and Irene exchanged glances. "Edric? It must be him! Find him right away!"

Wasting no time, Nathan took Irene to the hotel where Edric stayed. The front desk of the hotel stated that Edric was in the room. Nathan and Irene went straight to his room and pressed the doorbell for a long time. Finally, the door was opened, and a pungent smell of alcohol flooded their nostrils.

Edric staggered over and leaned against the door. He asked without looking up, "What?" Irene frowned. "Edric, where is Eden?"

Edric heard her voice and looked up at her drunkenly. "It's you? I'm not dreaming, am I?"

Then, when he caught a glimpse of Nathan standing behind Irene, he chuckled. "I've said that I'm not giving you any of my blessings. What are you guys doing here?"

"Edric Myers, did you get someone to take Eden away?" Irene was enraged.

"Isn't your son mine too?" Edric was slurring his words. "Why would I take my son away?"

"Edric Myers, stop pretending. Hand my son over, or I will never let you off!" screamed Irene.

"What? What are you going to do again?" Edric reached out his hand to hold Irene's shoulder. "Irene, you heartless woman! Do you know, it feels like you're stabbing me with a knife? I'd rather die than to live!" "Get out of my way!" Irene pushed him aside. Edric wobbled and fell down, his head hit the floor with a thunk. He had injured his forehead and was bleeding, but he didn't feel any pain. He just stared blankly at Irene. His eyes were twinkling with a thousand emotions: pity, resentment, and aggrievedness... In that split second, Irene was stumped by his gaze. Her words seemed to have gotten caught in her throat. Nathan, who was behind him, interjected, "Edric, we should never drag the child into our affairs. Eden is sick. What if something happens to him?"

"Nathan White, I have no idea what you are talking about, and I don't want to see you. Get out of here right now!" Edric couldn't vent his anger on Irene, but there was no way he was going to be courteous to Nathan. He was the one who took Irene away; without him, Edric would be living a blissful life with Irene and Eden right now.

Hearing this, Nathan's face turned bone-chillingly cold. Stripping the veil of politeness, he barked, "Edric, if you are a man, then don't bring Eden into this."

"What happened?" John had just returned and was shocked when he saw Edric lying on the ground. "What's going on?"

He reached out to help Edric up and looked at Irene and Nathan, his expression frigid. "Mr. White, what are you trying to do? Don't you think you're going too far?" "What do you know? Edric took Eden away. I'm here to reclaim him," Irene said furiously.

"Miss Nelson, you must be mistaken. Mr. Myers has never left the hotel since he came back last night. How could he take your son away?" explained John.

"If it's not him, it must be his mother," Irene snarled. She was certain that they were the culprits.

"That's out of the question! I just sent her back to Haverland, and I never saw her with Eden." John suddenly remembered something, his face changing. "Unless..."

That day, John had been instructed to send Margaret to board the plane. He had been worried that she would not return to Haverland. Besides, the night before, Edric had ordered him to take Margaret away with any means necessary. But Margaret was still Edric's mother after all, and if John had done so, Edric and Margaret's relationship would grow even more strained than before.

After Edric had come back and given John the order the previous night, he had stayed in his room and refused to come out to meet anyone. Before John went to send Margaret off, he had rapped on his door but Edric gave no response. John knew Edric was agonizing over Irene and Nathan's marriage, thus he didn't disturb him and went straight to Margaret's room instead.

He had been worried that Margaret would refuse to leave, but surprisingly she didn't make things difficult for him at all. She agreed to go back, on the condition that she could bring a couple of friends with her. Needless to say, John accepted her request. He'd then sent her to the airport where the private jet was parked. However, Margaret's friends had not arrived yet. After waiting for a long time, he saw a car coming over. Two strange men stepped out with a child. The child was sleeping soundly with a coat over him.

Margaret saw the two of them and greeted them enthusiastically. She invited them to board the plane. John was still confused at that time. He had been with Edric for so long. How had he never seen these two men?

However, he couldn't care so much. As long as Margaret was willing to go back to Haverland, his task would be completed. After the two men carried the child on the plane, Margaret immediately boarded the plane and urged John to get on the plane too.

John had wanted to go back with them, but he'd decided to stay because he was worried about Edric. Putting two and two together at this moment, he suddenly remembered the child in the arms of two men. Was that child Eden?

Just as John was lost in his thoughts, Joanne rushed over. "Nathan, I've just received a call from Mrs. Myers. She asked me to let you know that she has brought Eden back to Haverland!"

"What did you say?" Nathan raised his voice. "When did this happen?"

"Just now! After I received her call, I came over immediately. I thought she was joking," answered Joanne.

Joanne looked at the crowd and sensed the belligerence in the air. "She said that she had boarded a private plane with a doctor. She told you not to worry..."

"Godd*mn it! How can I not worry?" Seething, Nathan cursed. Then he looked at Edric and said, "Mr. Myers, you are such a brilliant actor!"

Irene looked at Edric. She had originally found Edric a little pitiful since he was injured, but now her heart was as cold as steel. "Book a ticket right away. I'm returning to Haverland. No one can ever take my son away from me!"
