Revenge Against My Ex-husband
Chapter 170 Let's Talk

After finishing everything, Eden slammed the door shut. Edric smiled bitterly as he thought, "Really, Eden must have gotten that temper from Irene." Crouching, he picked up the things that Eden had thrown out, one by one. Suddenly, he heard a voice behind him. "Well! Isn't this Mr. Myers? What are you doing outside my house?"

Edric looked back and was met with Jordan standing behind him, arms crossed, his sinister-looking eyes filled with conceit. Edric remained silent as he continued to pick the things up and placed them in a bag Only when he was done that he extended his hand at Jordan for a handshake, "Mr. Reed, what a pleasure to see you!"

"Ah, please, don't hold me in such high regard." Jordan didn't have any intentions to shake hands with him. "Edric, I'm beginning to belittle you even more. Are you really in a hurry to fight with Irene for Eden's custody? He is your son, and he's sick right now. Don't you think you're being cruel by telling him all of that?"

Jordan wasn't actually aware of the full story. He had only heard from Kinsey that Eden had found out that Edric was his biological father. However, Irene did not tell Kinsey about Joanna's provocation. Kinsey had a short temper, and she knew that it would not be good to let her know about Joanne's provocation. Irene didn't want to drive a wedge between Jordan and Joanne.

"I didn't say that!" Edric felt wronged. "I've never considered fighting with Irene over the child's custody."

"Quit it, you don't have to explain yourself. Who else would've told him if it wasn't you? Your mother? As far as I know, she hasn't fully recovered yet. So, now isn't the right time to scramble for an excuse for yourself," Jordan would never believe Edric's efforts to justify himself.

Edric smiled bitterly, "It's not my mother, but your fiancé who told Eden."

"Joanne? How's that possible?" Jordan asked incredulously.

"It's the truth. She came here yesterday and told all of this to Eden."

"D*mn it!" Jordan's face darkened suddenly. How could he have overlooked a ticking bomb like Joanne? She was always scheming her next move, therefore it made sense that she was the only person who would do such a thing. Jordan was about to enter the house, but Edric's words made him turn around and drive away.

Jordan seemed to be on the way to confront Joanne. However, Edric didn't have the heart to bother about such a matter.

All of these issues arose because of Joanne. For the sake of her self-interests, she had deliberately revealed to Eden that he was Edric's son. She was the one who had convinced Margaret to bring Eden back to the country, and the one who had told Eden about his relationship with Edric. Now, the entire family was in a mess, and yet she was enjoying the show.

After Irene returned from grocery shopping, she saw Edric standing outside the entrance with a few bags in his hands. The bags were filled with toys and food. At a glance, she knew what had transpired and said, "Eden is still pretty much shaken up. You should come back after a while."

"Irene, I want to talk to you. Let's have a talk," Edric requested.

"About what?" Irene asked.

"Let's talk about Eden, about us."

"Eden doesn't want to see you now, and you've seen his reaction yourself too. As for us, there has been nothing between us since a long time ago," Irene answered flatly.

"Irene, you said before that you didn't want to hear another word of sorry from me, and neither do I want to apologize to you anymore. This is what I want to say. For the sake of our child, let's get back together. Let's register our marriage now."

"You're out of your mind."

"Not at all, I've thought this through very clearly. Eden is strongly rejecting me right now because he thought I had abandoned both of you. I want to change his impression of me."

"So, you try to get back to me simply because you wanted to change Eden's impression of you?" Irene sneered. "Edric, you don't have to sacrifice yourself like this. Eden's prejudice against you is because of his tender age. I'll talk some sense into him and lessen his hatred for you. Although I am incompetent, I am a person of my word."

"You dare say that you're a person of your word? If your words meant anything, you shouldn't have forgotten the promise you made to me in the beginning, right?" Edric asked in return. "You promised that, for Eden, you would give me a chance, but you've broken your promise."

"You should very well know why I broke my promise, don't you?" Irene replied smugly. "Edric, I was ready to give you a chance, but you've been so ridiculous. I don't see the need to keep my promise to a man who constantly weaves lies out of his lips."

"Irene, even a crimimal would be given a chance to appeal when he's facing the death penalty. Just humor me, what was the real reason you left without a trace back then?"

Irene stared at Edric for a moment before answering nonchalantly, "Nothing big. Your lover, Rowan, had called me to tell me that she got together with you, and you guys were living happily together." "Impossible! I was never with Rowan. She was going to leave that night and wanted to treat me to a meal. I had a bit too much to drink, then I called myself a taxi. On the way home, I saw Lily's car break down..." Edric revealed everything that happened that night.

"Lily was the one to send you home?" Irene was taken aback.

"I can't quite remember. My mom told me that when I woke up the next morning," Edric replied. "Rowan and I never had any hanky-panky between us ever since we met, and till the day she left. I'd never intended to make her my lover, Irene. Ever since you left, I'd never touched any other women. I swear!"

Irene let silence settle between them. That night, Margaret had picked up the call when she was trying to contact Edric. If Rowan and Edric were never together before, was everything Rowane's set-up? She shook her head. "Edric, everything in the past is already over. There's no need to investigate any further. I only care about my son's condition now. Everything else is not germane."

"Irene, think about his health. All the more reason for us to get back together. Eden needs a father. Let's resolve our conflict now, start everything anew, and give the child a happy family to grow up with. This is the only way for him to get his health back."

A wry smile on Irene's face, she said, "Edric, it's not that I'm denying you a chance, but rather, I can't. Your mother won't give us a chance either. I've fallen out with her. Stop thinking that we can get back together. It's better to maintain our relationship like this for now."

"I've already told my mother. She promised that she wouldn't bother us-"

Irene interrupted him, "Edric, her words never amount to anything. You better not believe her too much."

"Irene, it's true this time. You don't have to worry about her reactions. I won't let her affect you," Edric confessed eagerly.

"Irene, didn't you say that we should let bygones be bygones just now? Don't let the past haunt us. We should look ahead of us. You're pregnant now, and Eden had never had a father since he was born. You wouldn't want this child to not have a father the moment he's born, right?"

Irene went quiet for a moment before speaking. "Edric, I'll think of a way to communicate with Eden. He's annoyed with you right now. I'll talk to him, test the waters. The thing between us - let's hold it off first. There are too many unpredictable things in the future, it's better to take one step at a time."

Despite himself, Edric lapsed into a silence at Irene's words. The matter between him and Irene could not be rushed. She had been disheartened to the point that she had built walls around her. She would not be moved with just a few of his sentences. The matter at hand was getting Eden to not reject his efforts to be close with him.

Jordan drove to the hotel where Joanne was staying. When she saw him coming, she was exhilarated, "Jordan, how come you're free to come here now?"

"Joanne!" Jordan glared at her and said between his gritted teeth, "You're incorrigible!"

When Joanne saw Jordan rush towards her in a fury, she knew that he had found out about her seeking for Irene the day before. Irene really was two-faced. She held the fire in her and asked, "What did I do?" "Why did you tell Eden that Edric is his father? Why would you do this?"

"I accidentally spilled the beans..." Joanne defended herself.

"Fine, you don't have to explain yourself anymore. Do you still remember what I said to you from the start?" Jordan sneered coldly. "I'd mentioned before that you have no rights to disturb my personal life although we are engaged. We would call off the engagement if you can't control yourself. And since you can't get a hold of yourself, let's break the engagement!"

"I won't break the engagement. Jordan, you can't behave ruthlessly to me. I didn't mess up your life. I merely let the words slip out from me." Joanne wasn't planning to give up. "It's my fault this time. I won't do this again."

An overwhelming surge of irritation billowed in Jordan as he glared at Joanne. "Joanne, I don't love you. I don't love you at all. There's no need for you to persevere like this. Let's end it here!"

"Jordan Reed, I won't give up on you. You'd said it before that if I could stay determined for three years, you would marry me. That was your promise to me. You can't go back on your words!" Joanne knew that Jordan was a man of his words. So she deliberately recited Jordan's words to stop him from babbling nonsense.

Those words were indeed what he had said before. Jordan realized how utterly dumb he had been back then. He glanced at Joanne and spat, "Since you're irrationally headstrong, then I shall fulfill you!" He left without looking back.

Joanne bit her lips tightly as she watched Jordan's diminishing figure. She thought, "Irene Nelson, I've given in so much, yet you're still testing the limit of my mercy. Don't blame me for my next move. You'd better not get anything you want, including Nathan and Edric!"

She returned to her room and called Lily. "Miss Cook, it's Joanne White. Let's meet!"

Lily was astonished to receive Joanne's call. She had never come in contact with Joanne before, so why would she want to meet her? She was pregnant now, so she took the precaution and decided to reject the offer. "I'm sorry, Miss White. I'm not available to see you. If there's anything, we can talk over the phone."

"I can't say it clearly over the phone. Let's meet and talk about it," Joanne insisted.

Although she would be able to tell Lily about Irene's pregnancy over the phone, she would not be able to observe her reaction. Most importantly, she planned to discuss with Lily about her next move. She wanted any possibility between Irene and Edric to be nipped in the bud.

"I really don't have time." Lily still refused to meet her. Her mother said that she had to be careful and not be involved in troubles during this period. So, it was better for her to err on the side of caution. Joanne chuckled. "Miss Cook, you need not be so wary of me. Let me tell you, I need to meet you because I have something important to tell you. I'll make it clear with you that it would be a great loss to you if we don't meet, because you may lose Edric forever."

This sentence alone left Lily feeling uneasy. Were Joanne's words true? If she did not meet her, she might forgo a piece of crucial news. Joanne's suspicion began to grow as she realized Lily's hesitation. Wha on earth was Lily afraid of?
