Ruler of the Skies
Ambrose goes on an important mission and The Gap prepares for the storm

A cave near Aerie

Calzar’s scouts had found a suitable cave. Overnight all of Calzar’s Dark ones arrived and settled for the remainder of the night. Calzar was broody as ever. He didn’t like waiting for the Day Walker and not being in control. He was also worried about what was happening back at the Well of Darkness. He pondered if his people were still loyal to him? He would prefer to be back there and exerting his control.

Morning was approaching when a sentry from the cave entrance found Calzar on his own, deep in the cave. “My Lord. The Day Walker is here.” The sentry crouched low as Calzar walked passed him towards the entrance.

Centurion Santos and his Elementals had made good time. The early sun’s rays were spreading across the valley as he waited just inside the entrance. Calzar stopped short of the entrance. “When do we attack?” He went straight to the point.

“Give us some time to rest. We will be in position this afternoon. We will maintain the thunderstorm through the afternoon and into the evening. That will allow you to fly home overnight.”

“We will need more than one night to get home.” Calzar snarled.

“That is not my concern. You can determine your own way back as you wish.”

“Then what?”

“Tahmore will have more orders for you. You will just have to wait until he comes.” Santos was about to leave. “By the way, have you found that brother of yours? Not good having a traitor in your ranks.” Santos didn’t wait for an answer. He just smiled to himself as he left the cave.

Calzar found it difficult to restrain himself and then thought. “One day I will kill you and enjoy eating your heart.” He marched back into the cave.

Pukavan

Commander Prahid and Elemental Rosalina were up early, eager to see Centurion Pryborg on his way. They met outside the Centurion’s room.

“Did he say or do anything yesterday?” Rosalina asked.

“No. He just worked in his room all day.” Just then Pryborg opened his door.

“Is my ship ready?” He asked.

“Yes. Your Eminence. All is ready.” Prahid replied.

“Good. Lead the way.” Pryborg had packed his things and motioned for the commander to lead.

They set off with Rosalina following.

Once at the docks, Prahid directed the Centurion to a medium-sized schooner. When they were on board Pryborg asked. “Princess Sienna, is not here to see me off?”

“No. Your Eminence. Other duties call. However, she sends her best wishes for your journey home and I have a scroll for you. Please deliver this to the High Centurion on behalf of Princess Sienna.” Rosalina handed over a sealed scroll.

“No doubt, a glowing report on my activities in her fair city.” Pryborg said with a deadpan face. Rosalina returned an awkward smile.

Prahid and Rosalina both bowed slightly and then left the ship as the captain barked orders to his crew. The ship would sail straight away. A Pukavan Lancer was standing close by. Prahid called him over. “Go and inform Master Ambrose that the Centurion has sailed.”

“Yes, Sir.” The Lancer left to carry out his orders.

“The big question is. Will he return before the Dark Winter?” Rosalina commented.

“Who knows? But one thing is for sure. He believes the Elemental renegade is here.” The pair watched in silence as the schooner pulled away from the wharf.

“I must return to the palace. The Lockmort negotiating team are leaving today.” Rosalina explained. “I will stay here. I expect the Golden Swan to be arriving sometime today.” Prahid bowed slightly and Rosalina returned a slight nod of the head and then left the Commander on the wharf.

Between Pinemarsh and Kaemoora

Captain Diego had roused his troops early and it was now approaching midday. They had passed by several ruined farms and small villages. People had come to meet them along the way begging for assistance. Prince Melville ordered Diego to help where they could. They mostly handed out spare rations and occasionally tendered the wounded, but they didn’t have an Elemental healer with them. Melville also urged them to keep moving.

Pelliman observed. “Doesn’t look like Xavier is doing much for his people.”

“Some people said that Prince Tolgarn was here not long ago, but did nothing.” Captain Diego commented.

“Something is not right.” Melville was getting more suspicious the more he saw. “I hope this Captain Rawslee is in Pinemarsh when we get there.” Melville spurred his horse ahead.

Abandoned farm outside Pukavan

Ambrose was getting impatient. There had been no word from Pukavan yet. Fineen came in from being outside on watch. “A rider approaches.”

“At last.” Ambrose headed outside followed by the rest of the group. The rider was just visible as they all gathered outside to wait.

Soon the rider was dismounting in front of the group. “Master Ambrose. The Centurion sailed this morning. You are clear to return.” Grimhilda offered the rider a flask of water, which he gladly took.

“Right. Let’s pack and be on our way. You are welcome to join us on the return journey.” Ambrose told the rider. He just nodded his acceptance.

Most things were packed already. They just gathered their things and saddled up the horses. Fineen and Udolf were on foot and headed out ahead of the rest. They would scout ahead just to be on the safe side. When the rest of the group were mounted, Ambrose led the way.

“What happens when we get back?” Jaymar was curious.

“We will tell Princess Sienna everything and have her send scouting parties to keep a watch out for those Dark Ones.” He replied.

“And me?”

“You can continue your flying lessons. I’m sure Rosalina will have finished the adjustments.”

Grimhilda interrupted. “I think we should put a hold on the flying lessons for a while. Don’t you think it a bit risky flying with Dark Ones in the area?” She was glaring at Ambrose.

“But mum, they only fly at night.” Jaymar commented.

“Or under the cover of a thunderstorm.” She made the point. “Let’s play it safe for a while?” She smiled at her son. Jaymar was not that happy.

“I see your point. We will practice on some of your other Elemental skills.” Ambrose returned the smile and then urged his horse ahead.

Aerie

Prince Levan was standing on a balcony high up in his palace. He was looking down on the Lizards outside his two gates. They hadn’t moved. However, there was plenty of activity on the ground level of his city as militia and palace guards continued to work on the cities defences.

As he watched from on high, he heard a voice in his head. “Your Highness. It is Solana. Meet me in the wind House of Worship.”

He immediately switched his gaze from below to above. “I’m coming.” He saw nothing above as he headed inside. He passed his wife, Pipa as he made his way through the corridors.

“Where are you going?” She asked as he hurried by.

“I have been summoned by Solana.” He didn’t wait for her reply and was soon gone. Pipa was not worried. She knew her husband met regularly with the Animoid eagle. She continued on her way.

The wind House of Worship was a magnificent structure cut into the rock of the mountain. It had all the usual wind chimes, weather vanes and flags. There was a constant whistle in the air.

Solana was standing in the central hall with Elemental Brentlina. She was a very old Air Elemental and the local air priestess. Just to one side of them stood a stand which had a waistcoat hung on it. The waistcoat looked very ornate and was covered in white and black feathers.

“May an eagle always soar above your head, Your Highness.” Solana greeted Prince Levan as he approached. Levan stopped in front of her and bowed low. “May there always be wind under your wings. My Lady.”

“What can you tell me of the Lizards at your gate?” Solana asked after Levan had stood up.

“They have made no demands. They seem to just want to keep us in the city. It is hardly a siege. I imagine they are waiting for something or someone.” Levan nodded slightly towards Brentlina acknowledging her presence.

“You are prepared to wait and see then?” Solana cocked her head to one side.

“Yes. A day or two.” Levan’s response was followed by an awkward silence.

Brentlina broke the silence. “Look. Somethings happening.” She pointed out one of the windows as a large cloud was forming. They all hurried over to look. More and more clouds were gathering and the sky was beginning to darken.

“What’s happening?” Levan asked.

“I feel a lot of Elemental energy being used.” Commented Brentlina.

“Who would be doing this?” Solana was getting concerned at the pace of the cloud build-up. “I must fly now to get above the coming storm. Good luck.” She whistled and flew out the window.

Levan didn’t hesitate. He ran out of the hall heading for the palace.

He was met by Centurion Everett and they headed for a balcony that overlooked the city below. Princess Pipa also saw the clouds building and had joined them.

“What is happening?” Levan asked the Centurion.

“I can feel a lot of Elemental power being used. Seems like someone is creating a storm.”

“What of those rumours of a Dark Terror attack on Trameal? Did they say there was a thunderstorm?”

“I’m sorry, Your Highness. It was Commander Roxy that heard the rumours.” Everett was unable to shed any further light.

“Well, let’s hope she has set up the net slings and cabling.” He turned to Pipa. “Make sure the children stay away from the windows. I will get some archers up here.” He and Everett left Pipa and went to replace some palace guards.

Commander Roxy was giving orders to both the palace guards and militia. She had positioned herself on the first level, on a battlement above one of the two gates. There were two large net slings on either side of the gate and they were primed and ready. She had positioned her best archers along the walls on the first level of the city.

The storm clouds were now very thick, blotting out the sun and a dark shadow had spread over the city. People were running in fear to their houses as the troops took up defensive positions all over the city.

Calzar and his Dark Ones had formed into their attacking groups and now approached the city from just under the level of the clouds. People on the walls called out and pointed at the approaching line of dark shapes. Gusts of wind blew across the city as the rain started to fall.

“Commander.” Prince Levan called out as he and Everett ran towards Roxy.

“All is ready, Your Highness.” She yelled out over the noise of the wind. “You should return to the palace and stay indoors.”

“Nonsense, I will stand and fight with my people.” He and Everett came to a halt next to the commander. She smiled at the Prince’s response. “They will be encouraged by your presence.”

“Have the Lizards moved? Will they attack?” Asked Everett.

“No, they stand steadfast. This is perhaps what they have been waiting for.”

“No doubt.” Commented Levan. “Here they come.” The first wave of dark creatures was diving towards the city. They threw their lava pots and fired arrows. On Roxy’s command, the archers sent a volley in return. The Dark Ones pulled up to avoid the arrows. A second wave flew down and several Dark Ones landed on the walls. Hand to hand combat ensued. They were fearsome creatures and very strong, overpowering many of the militia. A squad of Aerie Eagles swung into action and proved to be a match against the Dark Ones, killing a number before the others took to the air.

Roxy observed their tactics. One wave would fly down throw their lava pots and fire arrows at the defenders, then withdraw. A second wave would fly down and land in small groups to engage the defenders, but if they looked like they were being outnumbered, they would fly away. She barked new orders to her lieutenants. “Tell the archers to hold and not fire at the first wave. Wait for the second wave. We should knock more out that way. Also, get more militia onto putting out the fires.” Many small spot fires had sprung up along the walls and in the houses.

The new tactics worked. The second wave was hit with a volley of arrows. Many were killed and none landed on the walls. Calzar had had enough. He blew a high pitch note on his horn and the attackers withdrew. Cheers erupted all along the walls as the defenders realised they were leaving. The Dark Ones flew higher up to the cloud level and then headed towards the mountains.

Prince Levan breathed a sigh of relief. “Well done Commander. Report on the damage to me later.” He turned to the Centurion. “Help out with the wounded. I’m going back up to the palace.”

Everett just nodded his head as the prince left. The thunderstorm started to disperse.

High above the city, Solana and a group of eagles had been watching from a ledge.

Ella. Take two with you and follow the Dark devils. I want to know where they go.” Solana issued her orders.

Pukavan

Raum had waited until late morning before setting sail for Pukavan. The Golden Swan was now edging its way slowly towards the wharf. Lines had been thrown ashore and were now being secured to hold her in place. Commander Prahid was there ready to greet the returning troops.

“Ahoy, Commander. Has the Centurion gone?” Raum called out from the railing.

“Yes. This morning. You got a message?” Raum didn’t need to answer as Jalen stepped up to the railing and waved.

Soon the gangplank was in place and the troops disembarked, thanking Raum as they left the ship. Prahid asked to come aboard and Raum agreed.

“Any problems?” Prahid asked once on board.

“No. It was a good trip over and back. Gymbala has fully recovered from the attack.”

Prahid looked at the horse standing on the deck. “Not your usual cargo?” Before Raum could answer, Tabitha spoke. “I’m not cargo. My name is Tabitha and I’m a friend of Ambrose and I would like to be off this ship.”

“Rafeeq. Come and help untie your friend.” Raum smiled and called out to Rafeeq who was balancing on the rail. Rafeeq scampered over to Tabitha and started helping one of the crew untie the guide ropes that had been setup to support Tabitha while sailing.

Raum turned to Prahid. “Where is Ambrose?”

“They haven’t returned to the city yet. I sent word that the Centurion was gone, so I would expect them to return any time now. I must return to the palace.” Prahid turned and marched off the ship.

Ambrose and the group had just arrived and had made their way to Grimhilda’s house. Ambrose left Grimhilda, Jaymar and his friends and made his way to the palace. He wanted to see the Princess and Rosalina as early as possible. He arrived just as Prahid was returning from the docks.

“I see you have returned, Master Ambrose.”

“Yes. Thank you for the message.” Ambrose nodded his appreciation. “May I see the Princess?”

“Yes. She is expecting your return. Come with me.” Prahid led the way into the palace.

Princess Sienna, her son and Elemental Rosalina were in a small room that had a window, which looked out over the harbour. They had watched as the Golden Swan returned and docked. A palace guard directed Commander Prahid and Ambrose into the room.

“Your Highness. I’m sorry about the Centurion. It must have been a bit of a surprise.” Ambrose said as he bowed in front of Sienna.

“Nothing we couldn’t deal with. How was your trip?

“Demarco and his family have moved to their new home. However, we were attacked by a search party of Dark Ones.” He paused to let it sink in. “They were repelled, but I would suggest that you increase your patrols in the mountains between the cave-dwelling and Utway.”

“What are their numbers?” Asked Prahid.

“Not sure. I don’t think Calzar would send a large number, not with everything else that is happening.”

“Thank you for the warning.” Sienna was not very happy with all these unwanted events. “Since you have returned, all manner of things are happening to challenge us. I wonder what is next? At least the negotiations with Lockmort have progressed. The negotiating party has just left this morning. Nasrald is returning to his uncle with a new set of proposals. I am more optimistic about this latest set. So, we shall see.”

“I am glad to hear, Your Highness.”

“The Golden Swan has returned.” Sienna indicated out the window. Ambrose walked over and looked out. He looked at Prahid. “The troops?”

“Your Highness. The returning troops are all in good spirits and Gymbala has fully recovered.” He paused and then added. “There is one other thing.”

Sienna looked worried. “What else?”

“Your Highness. There is a new visitor on board, another friend of Ambrose. Her name is Tabitha.”

“What?” Ambrose laughed with joy. “How did they replace her?”

“I don’t know the details, but I’m sure you will be reunited soon.” Prahid concluded.

“Master Ambrose. Who is Tabitha?” Sienna asked.

“She is a horse Medium and a good friend of mine. I haven’t seen or heard from her in over three years.” Ambrose had a big smile on his face.

“Another Medium. I’m not sure I like the idea of having my mind probed by another one of your friends.” Sienna expressed her alarm.

“Your Highness. You have nothing to fear. She is very discrete.”

Prince Aravin interrupted. “Can you ride her?”

“I’m sure, if you ask nicely, Your Highness. She wouldn’t mind.” Ambrose was amused.

“Imagine riding a horse and communicating what you want to do with your mind.” Aravin was excited.

Sienna smiled. “Well. I think that can wait. First, we need to make her acquaintance. I imagine she has a lot to tell Ambrose, since it’s been over three years. Back to your trip, Ambrose. Is there anything else you need to tell me?” She gave Ambrose a hard stare. He paused, looked at Prahid and considered his words.

“I have already revealed that I am a member of the ‘Keepers’ organisation and an Elemental. The main reason the ‘Keepers’ was formed, was to protect the four ancient Elemental gems, until such time as the Council of the Elements could be reformed. Over the generations, two of the gems were misplaced, lost. I have been searching nearly all my life to replace them. Well by some remarkable luck, Demarco had one and now I have it.” The room was eerily silent.

“Can I see it?” Sienna broke the silence.

“Sorry, Your Highness. The ‘Keepers’ pledge is to keep them hidden.”

“I forgive you and understand. What hope do you have of replaceing the other gem?” Sienna asked.

“A slither of hope, Your Highness. If something like this can happen, then I must hope that it will reveal itself very shortly. These recent events are surely not a coincidence. Finding Jaymar and now one of the missing gems, means I am getting closer.”

“What you hope for will cause tremendous upheaval and challenge the authority of the Centurion Order. Are you sure this is what you want?” Sienna was contemplating her own role and that of her son’s future.

“Your Highness. Fate and the future have a funny way of testing us. There are many twists and turns to come, but I believe it will be for the good. The natural order and the Elements need to be restored. I also believe my friends and I will make it happen. I hope I can count on your continuing support.” To emphasise his point Ambrose bent down on one knee.

Sienna stepped forward and took one of his hands and pulled him up. “Rise up Ambrose. My family and my people will support you in all your endeavours.”

“Thank you. Your Highness.” Ambrose gave her and Aravin a warm smile. “Now, if I may, I would like to go and see Tabitha.”

“Master Ambrose, I would very much like for you to bring her here, as soon as possible. The quicker we get to know her, the quicker she might agree to have Aravin on her back.” They all laughed. Ambrose bowed and then left for the wharf.

At the docks, Tabitha was gingerly making her way down the gangplank, on her own, while Rafeeq was chattering instructions from the railing. A few amused onlookers had gathered on the wharf to watch her make her way down the narrow walkway. Finally, she stepped onto firm ground. She flicked her tail and looked back at Raum. “Don’t let me do that again.”

Many people watching were surprised to hear her talk. She looked around and called out. “Where can one get a drink around here?” Most of the onlookers hurried away. One woman yelled out. “There is a trough at the far end of the docks.” She also pointed in the general direction.

“Thank you, madam.” Tabitha trotted off in that direction; glad to be able to stretch her legs.

“Aark. We had better follow her.” Jalen hurried down the gangplank. Rafeeq leapt down from the railing and was scampering after her before Jalen set foot on the wharf. Raum was happy to see them go. He could now concentrate on getting his cargo offloaded.

As Ambrose approached the docks he noticed a commotion ahead. An animated crowd had gathered around something and was drawing more people in. As he got nearer he saw what was drawing so many people’s attention. It’s not every day that they would have seen a horse, a birdman and a monkey Animoid arguing on their streets. Ambrose pushed his way through the crowd to get to his friends.

“I will not be told by you, Rafeeq.” Tabitha was not happy.

“Eeek, but you’re making a scene. Use your mind.” He whispered through his teeth. He was trying to stop her from talking. Ambrose saw a rope on a stall as he passed and picked it up. He walked up to Tabitha, let her nuzzle his hand and then he hugged her neck. While doing so, he fashioned a halter around her head with the rope and whispered in her ear. “Follow me. Let’s get you out of here.” He nodded to Rafeeq and Jalen to follow and then led Tabitha through the crowd and along the street towards Grimhilda’s house.

As Rafeeq caught up, Ambrose asked. “What was all that about?”

“Eeek. Ask her.” He replied bluntly.

I was just a bit overwhelmed. That’s all. Having been cramped up on that ship for over two days.” Tabitha communicated with Ambrose.

“I must say, it’s great to see you. I have been very worried about where you were. Let’s get you into a warm stable with some hay and then we can talk.” Ambrose gave her a pat on the neck.

Soon, Ambrose had Tabitha set up in a stable out the back of the house Raum, Grimhilda and Jaymar were staying. Rafeeq had run inside to tell everyone of the new arrival. Grimhilda, Jaymar, Fineen and Udolf all followed Rafeeq out to the stable. Fineen was quickest and rushed to embrace Tabitha. She hugged her neck, purred and licked her ear.

“It’s so good to see you. When we split up near Volkmire, I didn’t think it would be this long before meeting again.”

“I know. Well, a lot has happened since then. You’re looking gorgeous as ever.” Tabitha whinnied.

Fineen stepped back as Udolf approached. He just patted Tabitha on her flank and then stepped aside. She just flicked her tail. Grimhilda and Jaymar were standing back letting the friends reacquaint themselves.

Tabitha locked eyes onto Jaymar and burst out. “You know my son. Where is he?”

They all looked at Jaymar. He was shocked and didn’t know what to say.

“I can see an image of him in your mind.” Tabitha explained.

“Do you mean Runeako?” Jaymar finally found his voice.

“You have given him a name. Runeako, I like that. Where is he?” Tabitha was excited.

Fineen interrupted. “He was left near Wycarba. We were fleeing a Centurion.”

“Was he on his own?” Tabitha was concerned.

Udolf finally spoke up. “There were other stable horses with him. They belonged to the Innkeeper, Wilton, in Kyeamba.”

“I didn’t want to leave him behind.” Jaymar added. “I had to escape by sea. Maybe Wyclef and Mylita found him after they left Wycarba.”

“Sorry, Tabitha we don’t know what happened to your son.” Ambrose concluded. “Now let’s do some introductions. This is Jaymar and this is his mother, Grimhilda. They are from Little Haven on Auroras Minor. Jaymar has great potential as an Elemental.”

“Nice to meet you.” Grimhilda and Jaymar both spoke at once.

“Likewise. You will have to tell me all about how you came upon my son.”

Ambrose interrupted. “Princess Sienna, the ruler here and her son Aravin have asked to meet you. Are you willing to meet with them?”

She looked at Ambrose. “Maybe that can wait. This pouch around my neck, it contains an important scroll for you, from Prince Theodor.”

“So, that is why you are here. Let’s have a look.” Ambrose walked over and gently removed the strap over Tabitha’s head and opened the pouch. He pulled out both the note and the scroll. At that moment Raum entered the stables. He had finished his business at the docks and had hurried home.

“I see everyone has met.” He gave Grimhilda a kiss on the cheek and smiled at Jaymar.

“That was timely. I’m about to read a note from Prince Theodor and replace out what this is all about.” Ambrose broke open the seal on the note and quickly read it. He passed it over to Raum and then opened the scroll.

“Well, this is very interesting news.” The note was being passed around the group. Fineen held it up for Tabitha to read. Finally, it was returned to Ambrose.

“As the note says, the scroll is a drawing of the Ravenshowl royal family tree. Prince Theodor is suggesting that Tahmore is lost Prince Dahlmor of Ravenshowl.” Ambrose walked over to show Raum, Grimhilda and Jaymar the scroll. He didn’t pass it around as it was very fragile.

“That could answer a few questions, but it also poses so many more.” Fineen commented.

“This Prince Dahlmor was a jackal-headed Animoid and an Elemental?” Raum asked.

“Apparently. At the time of his disappearance it was all a bit mysterious and quickly hushed up.”

Ambrose was thinking. “Princess Aliyah would know more. Dahlmor was her great Uncle.”

Udolf always the doubter. “You’re not going to see her. She would not welcome you.”

“We don’t know about that. She may not remember me. She was only twelve. I actually think her archives would be a better source of information. But how to get there?” Ambrose was considering his options.

“It’s getting late. Were you going to take Tabitha to the palace?” Grimhilda asked.

“As she said, that can wait. Tomorrow morning will be fine. I also need tonight to process the information in the note and scroll.” Ambrose replied.

“Well, let’s go inside and have dinner and let Tabitha rest after her long journey.” Grimhilda took Raum’s arm and started to usher him and Jaymar out of the stables.

“I agree.” Said Ambrose. The other started leaving. “It really is good to see you again.” He patted Tabitha on the neck and then followed the others.

A cave between Aerie and Pinemarsh

Calzar and his Dark Ones had safely made it to a cave. The thunderstorm had lasted just long enough for them to replace a cave before the sun had gone down. As night fell, Calzar was conferring with a couple of his lieutenants.

“We will rest here for the night and the next day. Send scouts out to look for another cave and keep guard while we rest.”

One of his lieutenants spoke. “We lost too many with no result. They want to raid for revenge and food.”

Calzar snarled. “No raiding. We rest, then go home. That’s all.” He signalled for them to leave him. The lieutenants backed off, bowing and scraping as they left. Calzar was preoccupied with thoughts of his brother. He was desperate to return home and then pursue him.

Ella and the other two eagles had landed in a large tree near the cave. When night fell, they noticed a couple of the Dark Ones leave the cave. Ella decided not to follow. They would watch over the main group still in the cave and wait to see what happened.

Aerie

Night had fallen, and everyone was on high alert. Would the Dark Ones attack again tonight? Prince Levan was joined by Centurion Everett on the balcony high up in the palace.

“All the fires are out, and the wounded are recovering well.” The Centurion reported.

“The Lizards haven’t moved. What are they playing at?” Levan was confused.

“Your Highness. Perhaps tomorrow we should challenge them. Send out the Aerie Eagles.”

“Perhaps we should.” Levan changed the topic. “That thunderstorm came up very quickly. Could Elementals do that?” Levan asked.

“Your Highness. I haven’t witnessed anything like that before, but I suppose it could be done. It would need substantial coordination and powerful Elementals.”

“Centurion involvement?” He was now challenging the Centurion.

“Possibly, Your Highness, but I doubt it.”

“Let’s hope there is not some rogue element in the Centurion Order. I want you to bring up the matter when you attend the Duma. I want a response from the High Centurion.”

“As you wish, Your Highness.” Everett bowed to the prince. An awkward silence fell between them as they both then turned and looked out over the city below.

Not far from Aerie, Prince Tolgarn and General Loktah with their combined forces had made camp. Prince Tolgarn had sent a messenger ahead to contact Uparta. He would advance on the city tomorrow morning and had suggested they make a little show of a mock attack before the Lizards could retreat. Uparta was not amused when he received the message. His Lizard soldiers were not ones that retreated. However, he would play along with the deception as planned.

As the dawn broke Commander Roxy was standing on the wall surrounding the first level of the city. She was waiting on orders from Prince Levan. Below her on the ground level of the city two platoons of the Aerie Eagles were assembled, ready to confront the Lizards, if required. One of the militiamen stationed on the wall near her, called out. “Commander. Look on the hills.”

All eyes looked to the low hills that stood to the North West of the city. Lines of troops started to appear on the crest of the hills. The commander called out. “What’s their livery? Where are they from?”

“Can’t tell.” “Too far.” Was the response from many on the wall.

Commander Roxy’s attention was drawn to the Eastern gate. The Lizards stationed outside were moving. They were heading to re-join the other force in front of the North West gate. More and more troops were coming over the hills towards the city. While she watched on, Prince Levan, Centurion Everett and Elemental Loretta arrived.

“Do you know who these newcomers are?” Levan asked as he came alongside Roxy.

“No, Your Highness. They are too far away even for my eyes.”

The two Lizard groups had now formed up and started to advance towards the line of troops coming over the hills.

“This should be interesting. They are severely outnumbered.” Commented Loretta.

“Don’t discount the Lizard soldiers. They are fearsome warriors.” Roxy countered.

A vanguard of cavalry broke away from the advancing line of troops. They rushed ahead to engage the Lizards. The two groups clashed, but it was over very quickly. The cavalry withdrew almost immediately. They hurriedly retreated back to the main body of advancing troops. Then there was a surprising move. The Lizards veered away and headed for the hills to the South West. Once again, a group of cavalry from the advancing army took chase. The main advancing line continued towards the city.

“They are Kaemoora militia. Prince Xavier’s troops.” Roxy had finally recognised their livery.

“I wonder who is leading them.” Pondered Prince Levan. “Send out a greeting party and have their leader brought to me in the palace.” He ordered Roxy. Levan marched off, back to the palace, followed by Centurion Everett.

Prince Tolgarn’s forces started setting up camp outside the city. Commander Roxy and a small escort of Aerie Eagles rode out to meet the leader. Prince Tolgarn told General Loktah to lay low, so when the guards brought Roxy to meet him, he was surrounded by only militiamen. However, Roxy had noticed a large number of Animoids amongst the troops.

“Your Highness. Commander Roxy of the Aerie Eagles.” One of the guards announced her to Tolgarn.

“Commander. Welcome.” He signalled for Roxy to come forward.

The Commander came to attention. “Your Highness, Prince Tolgarn. I offer you a warm welcome from His Highness Prince Levan. Your arrival is timely and appreciated.”

“We have travelled far and as fast as we could. A pity those cowardly Lizards have slipped away. But we are giving chase. How is your city holding up?

“Your Highness. We are all in good spirits and there are only a few casualties.”

“When did the Lizards attack?”

“Your Highness. They didn’t. It was the Dark Terror that attacked us, yesterday afternoon. Surely you notice the thunderstorm.” Roxy was surprised.

“Yes. I had noticed, but we thought it wasn’t out of the ordinary. So, what were the Lizards doing?” Roxy noticed that Tolgarn seemed to be losing interest.

“Your Highness. They just camped on our doorstep, so to speak. I would suggest they knew the Dark Terror was going to attack. What they were planning to do next, we don’t know, as you turned up and they have now gone.”

“Well then.” Tolgarn changed the topic. “I imagine Prince Levan will be eager to see me. You can lead the way.” He motioned to the commander that they should go. Tolgarn called for a couple of his lieutenants to accompany him as he followed Roxy.

Prince Levan was waiting in one of the better audience rooms. He and Princess Pipa sat on ornate chairs on a raised dais at one end of the room. Centurion Everett, Elemental Loretta and a number of other advisers and nobles lined the walls. The door to the room was open and two Aerie Eagles stood as sentries at the door. Commander Roxy and Prince Tolgarn marched into the room shoulder to shoulder, followed by Tolgarn’s lieutenants and a couple of Aerie Eagles.

“Prince Tolgarn. You are a welcome sight.” Levan stood up from his chair and stepped down from the dais to meet Tolgarn. They shook hands warmly.

“Prince Levan, my father sends his best wishes. These are troubling times.” Tolgarn then bowed to Princess Pipa. “Madam, it is good to see you again. It has been too long.”

Pipa just bowed her head in acknowledgement. The last time they had met, Tolgarn was a young teenager and didn’t say much.

“Come and sit. We have much to discuss.” Levan indicated to a chair set up just off the dais. Levan stepped back onto the dais and resume his chair. Tolgarn reluctantly sat in the chair as indicated.

“So, you chased the Lizards from our door. We are grateful. What brings you all this way?” Levan started the conversation.

“I thought that would have been obvious. We have been tracking the Lizards all the way from beyond Pinemarsh. Plus, I have had to clean up some of the mess left behind by the Animoid raiders. My father and I are taking back the East. We are driving these raiders out and now we have lifted the siege from your city.” Tolgarn was beaming.

“I would hardly call it a siege. But enough of that. What can you tell me about these Animoid raiders and the Lizards?” Levan was trying to put Tolgarn on the spot.

Tolgarn shifted uneasily in his seat. “Not a lot. They are a cowardly bunch. Running at the first sign of any challenge.”

Levan countered. “But hadn’t they badly damaged Bundamook, destroyed Pinemarsh and another small town. They seemed to cut a swathe across your realm with no resistance.”

Tolgarn was now visibly annoyed. He stood up. “You seem to be less than grateful. I have rid our realm of these raiders and freed your city. My father is imposing martial law across the entire East. I am leaving three platoons here to help keep order. I will be leaving tomorrow. Good day to you, sir and madam.” Tolgarn stormed out of the room. His lieutenants followed.

“Your Highness. Should I stop him?” Asked Roxy.

“No, let him go. He is just a young hothead.” Levan paused for a moment. “Commander, Centurion. Come with us now. We need to plan what happens from tomorrow.” He walked off the dais with his wife Pipa. Roxy and Centurion Everett followed them to another room for discussions.

High above Aerie, an eagle had watched the Lizards retreat. It followed them as they climbed into the mountains west of Aerie. Their Lizard beast found the rocky ascent easier than the chasing cavalry. Soon the cavalry stopped their chase. The horses could go no further. They turned around and headed back to Aerie, empty-handed. Uparta kept driving his troops higher and higher. They would be well away from Aerie before he called a stop for the night. The eagle continued to watch them and see where they eventually camped.

Pinemarsh

Prince Melville. Prince Pelliman and Captain Diego led their troops through the ruined streets. The captain called a halt as Captain Rawslee and Elemental Beaudeen approached on horseback.

“Hail Captain.” Melville called out.

“Your Highnesses. Greetings. We are glad to see you.” Rawslee and Beaudeen pulled up their horses in front of the two princes.

“Your recovery seems to be slow.” Melville was surveying the damage and the seeming lack of people involved in the clean-up.

“Your Highness. I am lacking troops and the locals don’t want to return or are too scared.”

“Well, I am sorry Captain. We are just here to inspect the damage and glean what we can about these Animoid raiders. I can’t give you any men.” Melville made it clear his intent.

Pelliman asked. “Is the Centurion administrator still in the town?”

“No, Your Highness. Centurion Alakusi left not long after the attack. He is in Daarook. I don’t expect him back, if at all, until after the Duma.” Elemental Beaudeen replied.

“Captain, can you show us where their attack came from?” Asked Diego.

“Follow me.” Rawslee turned his horse and led them to what was left of the Southwest gate.

When they arrived Melville and Diego dismounted their horses and walked around, inspecting the ruined gate and defences.

Pelliman asked. “Did they attack multiple locations?”

“Yes, Your Highness. From the rock ledges above the South wall, but this was their main target.”

Melville and Diego remounted their horses. “Captain. Are there any of the local defenders available that I could talk to?”

“Yes, Your Highness. The sergeant in charge of the gate is still here. I will send for him.” Rawslee called over one of the local militia and gave him orders to replace the sergeant. While they waited Melville, Pelliman and the two captains discussed what they had seen.

It wasn’t long before the sergeant arrived. He had a bandage on his right forearm and around his head.

“Sergeant, I hope you are recovering well.” Prince Melville started the conversation.

The sergeant bowed to both princes. “Thanks, Your Highness.”

“You were at the gate when the attack started?” Melville continued with his first question.

“Aye, Your Highness. It was terrifying. I haven’t seen Animoids that fearsome or worked up in my time.”

The questioning continued for several minutes with both Pelliman and Captain Diego also asking some questions. Finally, Melville had heard enough.

“Thank you, sergeant. You may go. We wish you a speedy recovery.” The sergeant bowed and left.

“These Animoids are not to be underestimated. It sounds like it was a well-coordinated attack.” Melville observed.

Captain Diego agreed. “They demonstrated a level of discipline that I wouldn’t have expected. Interesting that they were mostly ape Animoids.”

“Thank you, Captain Rawslee, Elemental. I am eager to return to the Gap. We will be on our way, I’ve seen enough.” Melville signalled to the rest and then led the way out the ruined gate.

Rawslee and Elemental Beaudeen waved them goodbye. If Melville and the group travelled quickly they could be in Bundamook by nightfall. That was Melville’s plan.

Pukavan

It was afternoon and arrangements had been made for Tabitha to meet Princess Sienna and her son. Princess Sienna, Prince Aravin and Elemental Rosalina were waiting in one of the gardens within the palace when Ambrose, Jaymar and Tabitha arrived. They had come on their own. Ambrose did the introductions. “Your Highness, Princess Sienna. This is Tabitha a good friend of mine. Tabitha, this is Princess Sienna, ruler of Pukavan and the surrounding territory. This is her son and heir, Prince Aravin and Elemental Rosalina, their faithful advisor.”

Tabitha nodded her head and flicked her tail. “Your Majesty, I am honoured to make your acquaintance. Excuse me, if I don’t know all the right royal protocols. I have been in the wild for the last few years.”

“The pleasure is ours.” Sienna replied. “You speak well for someone that has been in the wild, as you say. Ambrose says you are a Medium?”

Yes madam, but I am a bit rusty in that department as well.” She responded initially by using her mind and then continued speaking. “I will not be probing anybody’s mind if that is what concerns you.”

“I imagine it’s a great gift being able to communicate with lots of other animals.” Sienna observed.

“Yes madam, ah Your Highness.”

“So, Tabitha, I understand you have come a long way to replace Ambrose. You must have something important. What can you tell us?”

Tabitha looked sideways at Ambrose and he just nodded that it was okay to continue. He also communicated via his thoughts. “We have discussed this. You can tell Sienna everything.”

“Ah, Your Highness. I have brought news from Princess Theodor in Tamplina.” Tabitha continued to recount her meeting with the Prince and her journey to Pukavan with the scroll.

“May I see this scroll?” Sienna asked.

“Yes, Your Highness. I have it here.” Ambrose produced the scroll and handed it over to Sienna. As she studied it, Ambrose continued. “As you can see it is a family tree. If you look closely at the later entries of Dahlmor and Adebayo. You may notice something odd.”

“The name Dahlmor has been written over another name. It looks like Talimar. He was Prince Hakeem’s younger brother.”

“Correct, Your Highness. Held at a certain angle, the combined names seem to spell out ‘Tahmor’, which is a bit of a coincidence.”

Princess Sienna nodded and then passed the scroll carefully over to Rosalina.

“You’re thinking that this is Tahmore, the supposed leader of the Animoid army.” Sienna concluded.

“Yes, Your Highness.”

“Well, Tabitha, I can see why this information was deemed important. Ambrose, what are your plans now?”

“Your Highness, I am thinking I need to go to Ravenshowl and dig around to see what I can replace out about Dahlmor. If I can confirm that Tahmore is, in fact, Dahlmor then we may start to comprehend the motivation behind recent events.”

Rosalina was very puzzled. “How could someone like this Dahlmor turn up in Daarook and then become the Head Master of the High School for Elementals? Ambrose, you cannot be serious? If this is true, the ramifications would be disastrous.”

“Rosalina, I totally agree, that is why I must replace out as quickly as possible.”

“Ravenshowl is a long way.” Aravin added.

“What about your friend Cargan, the Ancient?” Sienna suggested. “Would there be a tunnel behind Ravenshowl?”

“Interesting. It would be the quickest way to get there.” Ambrose concluded. “Thank you for the idea. Your Highness. With your permission, I will leave as soon as possible.”

“Of course, you must go. We will all be eager to hear what you replace out.”

Rosalina asked. “Will Jaymar be continuing his flying? I have completed the backpack.”

“Great. When can I try it?” Jaymar looked at Ambrose.

“I am sorry, but with the Dark Terror in the region, I don’t think it’s a good idea to go flying. As I had mentioned before, you can practice your other Elemental skills. Rosalina can still help you while I am away.” Ambrose looked at Rosalina for reassurance. She just nodded.

“Tabitha, it has been wonderful to meet you. If you wish you can use one of our stables in the palace. My son would love the opportunity to get to know you better.” Sienna and Aravin knowingly smiled at each other.

“If Prince Aravin wants a ride, he just needs to ask.” Tabitha whinnied and flicked her tail.

Ambrose, Sienna and Aravin laughed.

Ambrose, Jaymar and Tabitha said their goodbyes and left the palace garden. Tabitha decided she would stable in the palace and Ambrose directed her to a Pukavan Lancer on their way out.

When Ambrose and Jaymar returned to Jaymar’s parent’s house. Ambrose immediately began to pack. He told all the others he was going back to the cave-dwelling and would ask Cargan to lead him to Ravenshowl. He added that he would be going alone. Udolf was not happy. Ambrose suggested that Fineen and Udolf could join some of the Pukavan scouting parties to keep an eye out for the Dark Ones. Udolf scoffed at the idea, but Fineen agreed she would see Commander Prahid about joining them.

Ambrose spoke to Raum and Grimhilda. “Jaymar will continue working on his skills with Rosalina, but I have stipulated no flying.” They nodded their understanding.

Finally, when Ambrose was ready to leave he spoke to Jaymar one last time. “Remember, you still have plenty to learn about your other elements. Flying is exciting but very dangerous right now. Listen and learn as much as you can from Rosalina. I hope to return as soon as possible.”

“Say hi to Cargan for me.” Jaymar gave Ambrose a hug. When they separated, Ambrose gave him a smile and then he was gone.

Aerie

Prince Tolgarn had positioned his troops throughout the city under the pretext of martial law. However, Commander Roxy and her Aerie Eagles had refused to allow any of Tolgarn’s troops to enter the palace. Roxy set guards at all the entrances from the lower level to the palace.

From the palace balcony, Prince Levan looked down on his city. Centurion Everett was at his side.

“I feel we are more like hostages now than when the Lizards were stationed outside our gates.”

“Your Highness, your Aerie Eagles could rid you of these troops. You just need to give the order.”

“We will wait until Tolgarn has left with the bulk of his forces. Then I will consider my options.”

As they were talking, Levan heard a voice in his head. “Your Highness. It is Solana. Meet me in the wind House of Worship.”

“I have been summoned by Solana.” Levan informed the Centurion. “Let’s convene later.”

“Your Highness, it is time I left for Daarook.” The Centurion replied.

“If it’s time to go to the Duma, then go. You know what you need to do while you are there.”

He left the Centurion on the balcony.

When Prince Levan arrived at the wind House of Worship, Solana was standing in the central hall with Elemental Brentlina.

“May an eagle always soar above your head, Your Highness.” Solana greeted Levan as he approached. Levan stopped in front of her and bowed low. “May there always be wind under your wings. My Lady.”

“What can you tell me about this new army camped outside your city?” Solana asked after Levan straightened.

Levan nodded to Brentlina, acknowledging her presence before he answered.

“It is Prince Tolgarn from Kaemoora. He says he has come to rid the East of the Animoid raiders and protect us from the Dark Ones.”

“You don’t believe him?” Solana shifted her head to the side.

“Things don’t feel right. Plus, many of his troops are Animoids, which is surprising.

“I sent eagles to follow the Dark devils and the Lizard soldiers. The Dark devils are holed up in a cave not far from here. They dispatched some scouts last night but are still there. The Lizards outran the cavalry and are long gone over the mountains. The cavalry has now returned to Prince Tolgarn’s camp. These are disturbing events. The eagles are anxious.”

“My Lady. It is very concerning, but I don’t have answers for you just yet. I need to tread carefully with Tolgarn’s troops stationed in the city. I would be very appreciative if you can continue to track the Dark Ones. Plus, could you keep an eye on Prince Tolgarn when he leaves for Kaemoora tomorrow.”

“Your Highness, we will cast our eyes far and wide. I shall return when I have more to report.” Solana whistled up some wind, took a few steps and then leapt into the sky. Her beautiful white wings carrying her up and quickly out of sight.

Elemental Brentlina spoke to Levan. “You know she will never intervene. The eagles are too aloof and don’t meddle in human affairs.”

“I am fully aware of our relationship with the eagles.” Levan didn’t stay to discuss it any further. He left and returned to the palace.

Prince Tolgarn was spending the afternoon in his camp outside Aerie. He and General Loktah were sipping wine in his tent when a guard entered.

“Your Highness, there is a Centurion here to see you.”

Centurion Santos didn’t wait to be called in, he brushed past the guard.

“Ah, come in Centurion Santos. Can I interest you in a wine?” Tolgarn indicated a bottle and an extra glass on the table.

The Centurion was not impressed. “How long are you going to sit here?” He gave Loktah a sideways glance. “Your orders are to have all your troops assembled near Kaemoora by the time the Centurion Duma starts. The Head Master wants you to be ready to move on the Gap at short notice. Don’t disappoint him.”

“You worry too much. I will be ready.” Tolgarn took another sip before continuing. “When will I get additional Animoid troops? I cannot mount an effective attack if my troops are spread all across the East.”

The Centurion countered. “You have enough. The main aim is to keep the Aerie troops bottled up here. The rest you can pull back as you head for Kaemoora. We don’t want Prince Levan to mount any attack against your rear.”

“Don’t worry, Prince Levan is weak. He will stay locked up in his lofty heights.”

Santos was not convinced. “Don’t underestimate the Aerie Eagles. I will see you in Kaemoora.”

The Centurion didn’t wait for an answer, turned a left the tent.

Tolgarn was not happy. He stood up and threw his empty glass at the tent flap. “That Centurion needs to be taught a lesson.”

General Loktah just snarled in agreement.

A cave between Aerie and Pinemarsh

The sun had just fallen below the horizon. Calzar and his Dark Ones were ready. His scouts had found another suitable cave. It meant they would still have one more rest day before reaching their home in the Well of Darkness.

Calzar was standing at the entrance to the cave. He lifted his horn and sounded a high pitch note. He flexed his great wings and took off. His Dark Ones were right behind him.

Bundamook

Prince Melville, Prince Pelliman and Captain Diego and their troops arrive after nightfall. Melville had pushed them hard and many were nearing exhaustion as they began to set up camp.

Melville called the captain over as he dismounted. “Tomorrow we will inspect the town’s defences and then move back and re-join the troops in the Gap. You may have to leave some of them here. I would suggest picking some of your best. If and when the attack comes, Bundamook will be hit hard.”

“I understand, Your Highness.” The captain left to see to his men.

Prince Pelliman dismounted and approached. “Well. Did you see enough? What’s next?”

“We will stay here a few more days and make sure the defences are in order. Plus, I want to drill these troops in preparation for what is to come. Let’s go and see the mayor.” Melville marched off in the direction of Bundamook’s town centre.

Mayor Alexia was a lady past her middle age. She was a streetwise merchant that had taken over the town many years ago. She ran it with strict discipline. Her chief advisor and close friend was Elemental Gloria, a middle-aged earth Elemental. They were marching down one of the streets when they met the two Princes coming the other way.

“Your Highness Prince Melville and Prince Pelliman. We heard you had arrived. Welcome to Bundamook.” The Mayor and the Elemental stopped and bowed to each prince in turn.

“I am Mayor Alexia and this is Elemental Gloria. I have made arrangements for you to stay at my house.”

“You are most kind. We accept your hospitality.” Pelliman responded.

“Tomorrow I want to do an inspection of your town’s defences.” Melville came straight to the point.

“Of course, Your Highness. You will replace that we have fully restored our defences after the recent attack and are as ready as we could hope to be. Some more men would be useful. Come we can talk over supper.” Alexia indicated that they should all follow her to the Mayoral residence.

When they had all settled down at the dining table and had been served some wine, Alexia asked. “Your Highness Prince Melville. Do you have any light that you can shed on the recent events? What have you concluded on your tour?”

“Well, you know just as well as I do that the Animoids are not some rabble. They seemed to be well-drilled and organised. What can you tell me about the attack on your town?”

“As you say, Your Highness, well-drilled and organised. They hit us at dawn but didn’t commit their entire force. It was as if they had their minds on other things and of course, now we know that to be true. The attack on Pinemarsh was much more devastating.”

“Perhaps it was because of the surrounding mountains.” Pelliman observed.

“They do provide us with an element of protection.” Commented Elemental Gloria.

“I imagine the guard tower above the city offered plenty of coverage from your archers.” Pelliman continued.

“Yes. Your Highness. We also have catapults that cover the city and the bulwarks in the Gap.” Alexia added.

“Those bulwarks are in poor condition. Why have you not maintained them?” Asked Melville.

“Your Highness. We are a small garrison town and that’s where my priority lies. The bulwarks don’t protect the town. Besides the region has been at peace for a long time.” Alexia countered.

“Not anymore. The High Prince of the East, Prince Anastas wants the Gap secured and ready to defend whatever comes at it. Tomorrow we’ll see how things are shaping up.” Melville concluded.

For the rest of the dinner. the conversation was limited and as soon as it was over, Melville didn’t stay. He wanted to be up early tomorrow and said good night.

Pukavan

Ambrose left as soon as night fell. He was on horseback and would not have a rest until closer to dawn. His mind was full of thoughts about Tahmore. Was he the lost prince of Ravenshowl? Also, would Cargan be able to replace a tunnel that led to Ravenshowl? What was he going to look for when he got there? Should he make contact with Princess Aliyah? Would she remember him? The night was clear, and he pressed on with no answers.

Aerie

The sun was up, Prince Levan and Princess Pipa watched from their palace balcony as Tolgarn’s troops broke camp.

“Where do you think they are heading?” Pipa asked her husband.

“I believe Tolgarn is returning to Kaemoora.”

“What was the point of his coming here?”

“I’m not sure, but I’m not happy about the troops he has left behind.” Levan looked concerned.

“They are a scruffy looking lot. Since when did Tolgarn include so many Animoids in his militia?”

“I don’t know that either, but reports from other towns, that are filtering through, are that Animoid troops seemed to be everywhere.”

“Should we be sending a message to Prince Anastas to replace out what he knows?” Pipa had seen enough and walked away from the balcony and sat on a lounge.

“I have given instructions to Centurion Everett to replace out what he can at the Duma. On his return, I suggested he go via Kaemoora and talk to Prince Xavier directly.” Levan joined his wife on the lounge.

“In the meantime, are we under house arrest?”

“No. We are free to move around the city. We will go about our business as usual. I think they are more interested in keeping the Aerie Eagles within our walls. But Commander Roxy has assured me that will not happen. In fact, she is organising a small scouting party to go out and make sure Tolgarn’s forces have actually left.” Levan smiled.

“Do you expect a confrontation?”

“Will shall see soon enough.”

Commander Roxy had assembled a scouting party of ten Aerie Eagles. They had assembled at one of the lesser gates from the palace that lead down to the next level. She gave them a quick briefing on where they were going and that they should expect to be confronted. All was ready, and then she led the way out the gate and down a series of steps. At the bottom, they turned a corner and came face to face with two of Tolgarn’s Animoid troops. They were both ape Animoids and very large.

“Halt. Where do you think you’re going?” Ordered one of them.

Roxy and a couple of her Aerie Eagles didn’t answer but attacked them. To the surprise of the two Animoids, they were quickly overpowered. One ended up on his backside with a bloody nose and two Aerie Eagles standing over him. The other was quickly pinned up against the wall. Both ended up with a blade at their throats.

“Where we are going is none of your business.” Roxy eventually replied. “Bind them and sit them back there on the stairs.” She issued her orders. It wasn’t long before Roxy and her troops were on the move again. She led them through many of the back streets on the second level of the city. Avoiding the large open areas where possible.

They met with no further resistance and quickly made their way to the first level of the city. To get from that level to the ground level they had to pass through one of the two gates. Both gates were guarded by Animoid troops. They came out of a side street and approached the gate. The troops on guard were completely surprised to see them. They hastily formed up to block them.

“Halt. You are not allowed to leave.” Tussah called out. He was an ape headed Animoid and the guard in charge. The two groups were equal in number and a standoff looked certain.

“Stand aside. I have orders from Prince Levan to scout the surrounding hills and report Prince Tolgarn’s movements.” Roxy and her Aerie Eagles kept on marching towards the gate.

“I have my orders. You are not to leave the city.” Tussah replied. Roxy ignored him, and the two groups came together. There was a little bit of pushing and shoving, but surprisingly the Animoid guards moved out of the way.

Tussah growled and swore at his men. “Cowards.”

The Aerie Eagles disappeared through the gate. Tussah order two of his men to follow them. He then ordered another, to go to the barracks where additional troops were housed. He was to order them out of the barrack and reinforce the gates. Tussah was determined to deal with the Aerie Eagles when they returned.

Bundamook

Inspections of the town defences and the guard tower above Bundamook took most of the morning. Mayor Alexia and Elemental Gloria had accompanied Prince Melville and Prince Pelliman as they conducted the inspections. Captain Diego had taken most of his men from the camp outside the town and had re-joined the main body of troops in the Gap.

Standing on the top of the guard tower, Prince Melville had an excellent view not only over the town but across the Gap.

“No doubt about it. It is a commanding position.” He observed.

Pelliman pointed at the closest bulwarks and commented. “Work has progressed well. Looks like they have nearly completed that stretch.”

Melville ignored him and turned to the Mayor. “I must commend you on the restoration of your defences and how the work on the bulwarks has improved. But I wouldn’t be getting complacent. There is a sizable Animoid Army out there somewhere and you will need to be alert at all times. I will report back to Prince Anastas and try to convince him that he needs to send more reinforcements.”

“That would be most welcome, Your Highness.” Mayor Alexia bowed slightly in acknowledgment.

“Well, it’s time we re-joined our troops. Tomorrow, Prince Pelliman and I will return to Conaldra. We will be leaving all the troops under Captain Diego’s command.” Melville signalled to Pelliman that he was leaving.

Cave Dwelling

Ambrose arrived shortly after midday. He tethered his horse then cautiously entered the caves. He was not sure if any Dark Ones were resting in the caves. After a quick search, he was relieved that he found none.

He entered the cave which had the large crack in the rear of the cave that leads into the tunnels. Ambrose went through and then placed his head close to one of the walls. He spoke the Ancient’s name and then sat down to wait.

Ambrose heard Cargan’s huffing before he saw the rock man. He stood up and slowly the Ancient appeared out of the dark.

“Welcome Cargan. Thank you for answering my call.” Ambrose watched as the rock man came to a halt in front of him.

“Where is the little human, called Jaymar?” Cargan was looking at the cave behind Ambrose.

“I’m sorry but I didn’t bring him this time.”

Cargan fixed his stare on Ambrose. “What do you want this time?”

“Will you take me through the tunnel system again?”

“Why?”

“I’m searching for information that may shed light on who the leader of the Animoid army is and who has been working with the Dark Ones.”

“I will not go to that place.” Cargan was about to turn away.

“No not the Well of Darkness. I need to go to Ravenshowl. Do you know that name?”

There was a pause as Cargan scratched his head.

“That name is not familiar to me.” He finally responded.

“It’s a mountain fortress on the west slopes of the main spine of mountains that run north. Perhaps if you can take me along some of the tunnels that branch off before getting to Daarook we might replace one that leads to Ravenshowl.” Ambrose was trying to sound hopeful.

“We can look.” Cargan agreed. Before Ambrose could say anything more, Cargan had turned and was striding off into the tunnels. Ambrose ran after him.

Aerie

Commander Roxy and her scouting party returned to the city. She had confirmed that all of Tolgarn’s army had left. When they entered the gate, Tussah was there to welcome them. He now had gathered almost all the Animoids, left behind by Tolgarn, and they outnumbered the Aerie Eagles.

“I told you we would be back. Let us pass.” Roxy ordered the Animoid leader.

“We will escort you to the palace. Form up.” Tussah shouted an order to his men and they quickly surrounded the Aerie Eagles. After some pushing and shoving the combined group marched off towards the next level.

Prince Levan had been forewarned that Roxy had returned and was being escorted back to the palace. He and Elemental Loretta were standing together inside one of the gates when Tussah marched his men and the Aerie Eagles through the gate.

“Halt.” Tussah ordered. As the group came to a halt there was once again some pushing and shoving as Roxy and her Eagles tried to break out of the encircled Animoids.

“What is your name?” Prince Levan addressed Tussah as it was clear he was in charge.

“I’m Tussah. Your troops disobeyed my orders. From now on they are confined to the palace. Anyone caught outside will be punished.”

“You have no authority here. My troops are free to go wherever they choose. This is our city.” Levan was standing firm.

Tussah smiled and then barked an order. “Get them.” Four of his Animoids broke off from the group and marched into the palace.

“What are you doing?” Levan looked concerned.

Tussah didn’t answer and they all waited in silence. Soon Levan could hear shouting and screaming coming from the palace. He was about to run to see what was going on when the Animoids came into view. Two of them had Levan’s children tucked under their arm. Princess Pipa was running close behind yelling at the Animoids to let her children go. The children were screaming at their captors.

Prince Levan turned back, saw Commander Roxy preparing to fight and he issued an order. “Commander Roxy, stand down. This is not the time.”

Princess Pipa ran to her husband and they hugged. “What is going on? Our children.”

She was in tears.

“Madam. We are taking your children into safekeeping.” The Animoids carrying the children had rejoined the rest of Tussah’s troops.

“Sir. Your children will be held in a safe place on level one. Your troops will not disobey me again.” Tussah turned and marched out the gate. The two holding the children were right behind him. Slowly, Tussah’s men peeled away from the Aerie Eagles and followed their leader.

“Your Highness. Please let me get them back.” Roxy was pleading to her Prince.

“No. Commander. For the moment, get your spies to replace out where they will be holding our children.” He turned to Pipa. “I’m sorry darling. This was unexpected.” He was trying to console his wife. Roxy and her troops stood around totally frustrated. She eventually gave them their orders. “Return to your posts. Don’t let any of those scum enter this palace again.”

Levan and his wife regained their composure. “Come let’s go inside. Please report on your scouting mission as soon as possible.” The couple walked slowly into the palace.

The Gap

Prince Melville and Prince Pelliman joined Captain Diego at the guard post in the middle of the Gap. All the bulwarks from Bundamook across to the guard post had now been resurrected. The guard posts acted as gates through the Gap which allowed whoever controlled the guard post to control the flow of people through the Gap. The gates opened just after daybreak and closed on dusk. Currently, there was the usual flow of travellers either way.

“Captain, how is progress going on the bulwarks between here and the coast?” Melville asked.

“Your Highness. There is only one small section left. I have swung as many men as possible to get it completed.”

“When it’s complete, what next?” Asked Pelliman.

“Your Highness. I believe we need to build some ramparts and ditches to slow down any attacking force and protect the centre section of the bulwarks.”

“I agree Captain. Keep up the good work. My biggest concern is an attack from the air. If the Dark Terror and the Animoids coordinate an attack, you will be hard-pressed.” Melville looked back towards the lookout tower above Bundamook and the mountains.

“Your Highness. I have ordered the building of a couple of net slings, but I concede it will not be enough.”

“Well, drill your archers, as much as possible over the coming days.” Melville added.

“Your Highness. Some Elementals would be useful. Could Prince Anastas release some to assist in our defence?”

“I will put it to him, but with the Duma due to start, he will not have many left at his disposal.”

Silence fell over the group as the reality of the situation sunk in.
