Ruler of the Skies
Jaymar meets the real rulers of the skies

Pinemarsh

It was late in the afternoon, Commander Roxy’s scouts had completed their search of the town. The reports were as expected. The town would need a lot of work and assistance to be habitable again. She shielded her eyes as she looked skyward. To her surprise, a third creature had joined the two eagles. There was something odd about this new arrival. Her thoughts were interrupted as another scout returned.

This scout had been posted in the foothills, to keep a watch for any Animoids that might come down from the mountains.

“Commander, a small group of humans and Animoids is making their way up through the hills to the South. I counted four in their number. Thought you might want to know.” The scout reported.

“Do you think they are a scouting party?”

“Not that I can tell. I have seen no other groups, large or small.”

“Perhaps I should go and have a look for myself.” Roxy called over one of her lieutenants.

“I am heading out with this scout. I don’t think I will be long. Get the troops ready to leave in the morning. If I don’t return by supper, send a search party.” Roxy signalled the scout to lead the way.

Ambrose and the group stopped to rest. They were on a ridge overlooking Pinemarsh.

“The town looks to be in total ruin.” Fineen commented. Her keen eyes giving her a better view of the town.

“It looks deserted. The townsfolk haven’t returned.” Ambrose looked away and was about to get the group moving again when Fineen grabbed his sleeve.

“Ambrose, there is movement below. We may have some visitors.”

Ambrose turned and strained his eyes, trying to see what Fineen was talking about. Udolf joined them and uttered a low growl.

“They look harmless.” Ambrose commented after spotting the two figures. “Let’s go. I want to be in the tunnel before dark. I doubt that they will catch up to us before we get there.” He signalled for them all to get moving. Udolf was the last to leave.

High above them, Jalen had found the tunnel entrance and was circling back to Ambrose and the group when he noticed the two figures coming from the town. Suddenly, Ella was at his side.

“Aark. Do you know them?” He asked, forgetting to use his mind.

They are from Aerie and friends of ours. I imagine they want to talk to your friends.” Ella filled Jalen’s mind.

“Aark.” He squawked. He sounded a whistle and descended towards Ambrose.

Ambrose heard the familiar whistle and called the group to a halt. Jalen landed softly in front of the group.

“What is it? Have you found the tunnel?” Asked Ambrose.

“Aark. Yes. It’s not far.” Jalen pointed over his shoulder to indicate the tunnels whereabouts.

“Aark. Ella says the two, that approach from below, are her friends from Aerie. Aark. She suggested you may want to talk to them.” Jalen blinked his large eyes.

“We keep going. Lead the way. We’ll talk with them, when and if they catch up.” Ambrose urged the others on. Jalen turned and led the way.

Roxy and her scout saw the eagle and the other creature come together. Roxy noticed a familiarity about the other creature. It appeared to be a bird Animoid. She watched as it descended behind a ridge. The eagle reappeared on its own.

“They know we are coming. The bird creature has warned them. Best be on our guard.” She told the scout as they continued their climb.

The sun was starting to set as Jalen and the group made it to the tunnel entrance. Jalen, Ambrose and Jaymar were all feeling exhausted because of the steep climb. They sat on some rocks, just inside the entrance to catch their breath, while Fineen and Udolf stood guard, showing no signs of exhaustion.

“Do you intend to wait for them?” Fineen asked Ambrose.

“If Ella says they’re from Aerie, there is no harm in meeting them. News of what has been happening would be good to hear. Remember to be careful about what we say.” He warned the others.

Roxy and the scout approached the group as they waited in front of what seemed to be a cave. “By the Elements. State your business.” Udolf called out to the strangers.

“We mean you no harm. I am Commander Roxy of the Aerie Eagles. Can I speak to your leader?”

“You can approach.” Udolf turned and signalled Ambrose. “They are here and want to talk to you.”

“Jaymar and Jalen stay here. They don’t need to know our full number.” Ambrose joined Udolf at the entrance. The last of the daylight was ebbing as Ambrose, Udolf and Fineen considered Roxy and her scout.

Ambrose eventually greeted the commander. “May an eagle always soar above your head, Commander.”

“By the Elements, may you live long. You know something about our customs?” Roxy was a little surprised.

“Yes, I have been to Aerie a number of times, many years ago. What brings you this far from Aerie?”

“These are dangerous times. We are out scouting. His Highness, Prince Levan wants to get a better understanding of what is happening in his realm.” Roxy replied.

“Pinemarsh is not part of Prince Levan’s realm.” Ambrose stated.

“We heard reports that it had been destroyed by Animoid raiders. I decided to come and have a look. May I ask, where are you from and what are you doing here?” Roxy countered.

“Well, that is a long story. Now that it is getting dark, I don’t think it wise to stay out here. The Dark Terror is in a cave not far from here. So, I think we should continue inside.” Ambrose signalled them to follow him into the Maze.

Commander Roxy was a bit hesitant at first but then decided to follow. Signalling her scout to join her. Fineen and Udolf came in behind them.

Roxy was surprised as they moved further into the tunnel. There was a reddish glow that enabled her to see reasonably well. It wasn’t far before they came to the spot were Jaymar and Jalen were waiting. They both stood up as the group approached.

“Ah. So, there is a bird Animoid in your company.” Roxy commented as she saw Jalen. She formally greeted him. “May there always be wind under your wings.” She bowed her head slightly towards him.

“Aark. Thank you.” Jalen blinked his large eyes a little embarrassed by the attention.

“Well, let’s resume our conversation from outside. What have you found during your search?” Ambrose put it back on Roxy to explain herself.

“Sorry, I thought you were going to tell me your long story as to why you and your company are here.” Roxy was up to playing the game.

Udolf made a low growling sound. Roxy’s scout nervously stepped away.

“Seems like we have a standoff.” Ambrose observed. “We need to be on our way. Please pass on my greetings to Prince Levan. By the Elements. Go in peace.” Ambrose signalled to the others to start moving further into the Maze.

Roxy was disappointed. “Sorry, we couldn’t exchange more information. However, before you go, may I ask. Where does this tunnel lead?”

Ambrose stopped to reply. “We are returning from where we came.”

“But isn’t this a Maze? Can you navigate the Maze?” Ambrose took a moment to collect his thoughts. The rest of the group stopped to hear his reply.

“What do you know of the Maze?” Ambrose decided to respond with a question.

“There is an entrance behind the Wind House of Worship above Aerie. The Aerie Eagles have known of it for generations, but we don’t dare enter. We guard it at all times.” Roxy made a quick decision at that moment. “If you can navigate the Maze. Can you take me to Aerie now? I would be most grateful.”

Ambrose hesitated for a moment and considered his options. He looked at Jaymar and the others.

“We don’t know how to navigate the Maze, but we know of one that can. I will let him decide.” Ambrose moved close to the wall and called. “Cargan, come back to us. We are waiting for your return.”

Cave Dwelling South of Pukavan

Raum and Cargan had returned to replace Rafeeq waiting.

“Eeek. Where are the others?” He was happy for a break from the boredom of just waiting.

“We got separated. I left Jalen to search for the others. I have returned with a message for Princess Sienna.” Raum was feeling weary.

“Did you rescue Jaymar?” Rafeeq was full of questions.

“Yes. I don’t have time to stay here and explain. We must go.” Raum turned to Cargan. “By the Elements. Thank you for all your help. Please return and bring them back safely.”

Cargan bowed his head slightly in acknowledgement. Then he heard a whisper from Ambrose.

“Ambrose calls.”

“That is good news. Go.” Raum was happier now he knew Ambrose was alive.

“Eeek. I’m going with Cargan.” Rafeeq decided he had enough of not being in the action.

“Do as you wish. Tell Ambrose I’m on my way to Pukavan as planned.” Raum turned and ran out of the cave entrance.

“Eeek. Cargan can I ride on your back? It will be quicker.” Rafeeq had a cheeky smile on his face.

Cargan just huffed and re-entered the Maze. Rafeeq, accepting that was a “Yes”, quickly jumped up onto Cargan’s back and held on tight.

South of Bundamook

Night had fallen and Calzar was about to head out to search for the group again when Centurions Santina and Santos arrived at the cave entrance. Centurion Santina carried a lamp in her hand to light their way.

“Calzar. Why didn’t you attack the town as requested?” The lamp was illuminating the cave entrance. Many pairs of red eyes could be seen behind the Dark Terror leader.

“I have already told that one.” Calzar glanced at Santos. “I will replace the Elemental child and bring him to your master.”

“An Elemental child?” Santina was confused. Santos had said it was the renegade Elemental. “Is there more than one Elemental?” She demanded.

“What does it matter? I will catch or kill all of them.” Calzar snarled.

“No. The Elementals must be caught alive.” She was considering her options. “You can search tonight, but when we are ready to create a thunderstorm again, you must attack the town.”

“And what if I don’t?” He replied.

Santina placed her hand on the wall and the cave started to shake. “I will return during the day and bring down the ceiling of your cave with you and your Dark Ones in it.” To emphasise her point she caused a few rocks to fall and crash at Calzar’s feet. Calzar stepped back and snarled in response.

“What elements did these Elementals wield?” Santina wanted more information.

“The Elemental child used Fire and Wind.” Calzar recalled.

“Ah! Two elements.” Santos was surprised. Santina signalled him to be quiet.

“And the other?” She continued to press Calzar.

“The same. We fought in Gymbala.” Calzar added.

’It is the renegade and he has a protégé.’ Santina’s mind was racing.

“Continue your search but capture the Elementals alive. We will return.” Santina turned and signalled Santos to follow. “I must go to Daarook and inform the High Centurion and Head Master. I want you to return to Prince Tolgarn’s camp and wait for the Elemental from Kaemoora. Return here each day at dusk and get a report from Calzar. If he captures the Elementals you must get them away from him.”

“Your Eminence, that will not be easy.” Santos was sceptical.

“Use all your Elementals. We must have them. Keep pressure on Calzar. He must attack Bundamook once you have your extra Elemental.” The two Centurions parted. Santina would cross over the mountains behind Bundamook and head for Daarook immediately.

Calzar and his Dark Ones took to the night sky once the Centurions had gone. He would extend their search tonight.

Pinemarsh

Fineen was standing at the tunnel entrance keeping watch. In the distance, she saw a blur of dark shapes and she edged her way back inside the entrance slightly.

“Ambrose, they are expanding their search.” She whispered over her shoulder.

Ambrose appeared out of the blackness and stood by her side.

“Let’s hope they don’t decide to investigate every cave they replace.” He patted her on the shoulder and returned to the others.

Commander Roxy had been thinking about what she should do next. Her troops would have sent out a search party by now. She had not sent her scout back to Pinemarsh as the Dark Ones might have seen him leave the cave. Her troops would be exposed to potential Dark Terror attack. However, she really wanted to return to Aerie and report to Prince Levan. The quickest way was via the Maze. She decided she would send the scout back at daybreak. Her thoughts were interrupted by Cargan’s return. His massive shape appeared out of the darkness. When he stopped Rafeeq jumped down and skipped over to Jaymar. “Eeek, you’re alive.” Rafeeq gave Jaymar an excited hug. “Your father will be happy. Eeek. He has returned to Pukavan.”

“Shush. Rafeeq, keep it down. The Dark Terror are searching outside.” Udolf whispered between his teeth. Rafeeq released Jaymar and sulked at Udolf’s rebuke.

Ambrose approached Cargan. “Thank you for returning. I am glad the landslide didn’t cause any injury.”

“It was unfortunate. Who are these?” Cargan was looking at Roxy and her scout.

“I am Commander Roxy from Aerie and this is one of my scouts. It is an honour to meet an Ancient. Legend does not do you justice.” She was in awe of Cargan’s size and appearance.

“Commander Roxy says there is an entrance to the Maze in the mountains above Aerie. Do you know about it?” Ambrose asked.

“The Aerie rulers built a Wind House of Worship in front of it. A large colony of eagles roost nearby.” Roxy was trying to describe it for Cargan.

“I may have been there before. What do you want with this place?” Cargan had not put two and two together. Ambrose explained. “Commander Roxy wishes to return to Aerie quickly and report to her ruler, Prince Levan. Will you take us there?”

“I see no harm.” Cargan looked at Ambrose. “This is becoming a regular occurrence. Remember, no one is to travel the Maze without permission.” He warned.

Ambrose nodded his head in agreement. “Commander you have been granted your wish.”

“Thank you.” She turned to her scout. “Remain here until daybreak. Then return to Pinemarsh and pass on my orders for the others to return to Aerie as quickly as possible.”

“Yes, Commander.” The scout accepted his orders.

“I am ready when you are.” Roxy informed the group.

Cargan set off back into the Maze. The rest followed at a jog.

The Dark Terror

Calzar was getting more frustrated by the hour. His Dark Ones had spread out all over the mountainside and nearly to Pinemarsh. There were so many small caves and crags. They couldn’t check them all. A new day would be dawning shortly. He lifted his horn to his lips and sounded the call. They had to return to the cave now before it got too late.

Horns sounded all over the mountainside in response and the Dark Ones all started to return to the safety of the cave.

The Aerie scout heard the horns and chanced a quick look out from the cave. Several Dark Ones flashed by overhead. He would wait until daybreak before heading out.

The Gap

Centurion Santos made it back to Prince Tolgarn’s camp shortly after dawn. He informed a guard of his return and went to his tent to freshen up. He would see the Prince later.

Prince Tolgarn was in a foul mood. Nothing was going to plan. The different Animoid groups were annoying each other. His militiamen were apprehensive about the Animoids and there was a general feeling of discontent in the camp. When Centurion Santos eventually reported back to Tolgarn, he got a hostile reception.

“You Elementals are all the same. You’re so obsessed with your silly Elemental games you can’t see the bigger picture. I’m not interested in your report unless it’s to tell me that Bundamook is now mine. Get that Dark scum to do their bit and attack the city.”

Santos tried to explain. “Your Highness, once I have the extra Elemental, I will be able to produce a thunderstorm long enough for the Dark Ones to do the job.”

“But why can’t they attack at NIGHT? They are the Dark TERROR. Why are we waiting for them to attack during the day?” Tolgarn was even angrier.

“Your Highness, the Dark Terror leader, Calzar will not attack again unless you provide ground support.” Santos bowed his head.

“That just confirmed my suspicion, that this Calzar is a coward. Get out of my sight until it’s time for the attack.” Tolgarn waved his hand to dismiss the Centurion.

Aerie

Prince Levan was in the Wind House of Worship when an Aerie Eagle guard approached.

“Your Highness. Riders have returned. They are in the lower part of the city. One of them is on their way to report.”

“Thank you. Is Commander Roxy amongst them?” He started to walk back to the main palace with the guard.

“No, Your Highness.” The guard replied.

At the back of the Wind House of Worship, the two guards stationed at the entrance to the maze heard some noise coming from within. They were both alarmed. They stepped away from the entrance and readied their weapons.

Cargan was standing just inside the maze having arrived first. Udolf and Fineen were the first of the others to arrive. Most of the others were out of breath.

Commander Roxy asked the group to wait in the tunnel. She would go first and inform the guards outside that there was no danger. She also wanted to replace Prince Levan and bring him to the wind House of Worship to meet them. Ambrose and the others agreed to wait.

“What will you tell Prince Levan?” Fineen asked Ambrose after Roxy had left.

“We have nothing to hide. From what I know and have seen, Levan is not siding with the Animoids. Commander Roxy has confirmed that. All I would suggest is Jaymar stay here in the tunnel with Cargan. The least number of people that know about Jaymar the better.” Ambrose warned.

“Halt.” Ordered one of the guards.

“Lower your weapons.” Roxy replied. The guards both looked surprised to see their Commander emerging from the entrance. “Stay at your posts. I must replace the Priestess and His Highness Prince Levan. I will return shortly.” She hurried off towards the palace.

Ambrose was deep in thought as he paced back and forth, while they waited for Roxy’s return. Jaymar sat next to Cargan and used his Earth powers to recover his strength. After what seemed like a long time, Roxy re-entered the tunnel and asked them to follow her out to meet Prince Levan.

Prince Levan was accompanied by Elemental Loretta. Brentlina the Elemental Priestess was also there. Centurion Everett had not yet returned from the Duma. Commander Roxy had collected some extra Aerie Eagles as guards, on her way back. Ambrose, Udolf, Fineen, Rafeeq and Jalen formed a straight line in front of the entrance. Commander Roxy stood next to her Prince.

“Your Highness, I would like to introduce you to Master Ambrose and his friends.” Roxy was about to ask Ambrose to introduce everyone when she noticed Jaymar and the Ancient were missing.

“Excuse me, Master Ambrose, but Prince Levan would like to meet the Ancient One and the boy.”

Ambrose hesitated a moment and then he bowed low. “Forgive me, Your Highness. The Ancient One is a shy creature. The boy and he have bonded. They stayed in the tunnel because of Cargan’s size. His appearance may shock you.”

“My palace guard and I are no shrinking violets. I assure you we will not all run in panic. Bring them out to me.” Levan insisted. Ambrose turned and called to Cargan and Jaymar to come forward.

Jaymar came straight out and stood next to Ambrose. Cargan had to take his time to bend down and slowly work his huge frame out through the entrance. As he stood up tall, there was a gasp from some of the Aerie Eagles.

Roxy gave them a glare. Cargan’s voice rumbled around the House of Worship. “You wish to talk to me, Prince? Then talk.”

“I am Prince Levan of Aerie. I wish to extend my welcome to you. It has been many generations since this entrance has been used. But we have safely guarded it all this time hoping that one day we would be blessed with a visit from an Ancient.” Prince Levan then bowed to Cargan.

“The Old Father visited here many times and I have also been here before, but now none of our race ventures this far. This place is strong with Air, but I sense something is missing.” Cargan ducked under a wind chime as he lumbered into the centre of the House of Worship towards the ornate waistcoat hanging on the stand. Levan, Elementals Loretta and Brentlina all looked at each other surprised.

“Are you referring to the waistcoat?” Asked Brentlina. Everyone followed Cargan as he moved toward the stand. Cargan stopped and pointed at the waistcoat. “This is an ancient object that has lost its life. Where did it come from?”

Jaymar was hanging back from the rest of the group. He was feeling unwell and was experiencing a tingling sensation all over his body. Ambrose was not paying him any attention, as he was interested in what Cargan was saying. He too was experiencing a slight tingling sensation, but he knew what it was.

Prince Levan stood next to the waistcoat and tried to answer Cargan’s question. “It’s origins I do not know. For generations, one or more of my family was an Air Elemental. The waistcoat was worn by them and handed down to the next Air Elemental in our family, over the years. The last Air Elemental in our family has long gone. It is said to have mysterious qualities. But none now living have seen them.”

Cargan sniffed. “Magic.”

Elemental Brentlina scoffed. “Surely not.”

Ambrose had known once he felt the tingling. He could not help himself and stepped forward to cast a small spell. The waistcoat reacted. The feathers ruffled. There was a collective gasp from the group.

“What did you do?” Demanded Brentlina. “Do you know magic?” The Aerie Eagles all braced themselves, readying their weapons. Udolf and Fineen reacted springing to Ambrose defence.

“Let’s all just calm down.” Ordered Prince Levan. His arms out trying to calm everyone down. “Master Ambrose, I think you have some explaining to do.”

Ambrose hesitated, thinking what to say next. When there was a rush of wind and the sound of wings flapping. Solana landed amongst the Aerie Eagles startling everyone.

“What is going on? I felt a summons. The Apex Eagles will have also felt it and they will come.”

Just then, Jaymar collapsed on the floor, due to all the commotion, no one noticed except Cargan. He moved quickly across to Jaymar and picked him up. Once Ambrose noticed, he was quickly by his side.

“Jaymar, can you hear me. Control your power.” Ambrose looked into Jaymar’s eyes. Jaymar immediately started to feel better. It was Cargan’s touch. Jaymar felt the Earth power flowing into him.

“I’m okay. I just fainted. My body is tingling all over.” He told Ambrose.

Solana approached them. “It’s the waistcoat. It is reacting to your strong Air Elemental power.”

“Why?” Jaymar was confused as Cargan let him stand on his own.

“The waistcoat is an ancient gift from the Apex Eagles, to the rulers of Aerie. It has magical powers that allow the person who wears it to fly using their Air Elemental powers. It has been many hundreds of years since it was last worn. But I expect the Apex Eagles will come and investigate.”

Everyone started to scan the skies above the House of Worship.

“What will they do?” Asked Prince Levan.

“I am their kin, but I don’t know the mind of the Apex Eagles.” Solana responded.

Ambrose approached the bird-woman and said. “You must be Solana. A friend of mine, Wanda met you last year. I am Ambrose.” He bowed his head slightly.

“Yes, I remember. You are also an Air Elemental. Why have you come here?” Solana tilted her head to one side.

“I think we would all like to know the answer to that question.” Prince Levan added.

“Look!” One of the Aerie Eagles pointed above. Two large winged shapes were rapidly descending towards them. Everyone was amazed and anxious about what they saw.

Two very large eagles landed next to the waistcoat hanging on the stand. Everyone cleared the area for them. They both stood as tall as Ambrose. They had white feathers on their heads and wings, with black feathers on the rest of their bodies. They both wore a chainmail vest around their bodies and shiny metal spurs on their legs. They were both very intimidating looking creatures.

Solana walked over to greet them. She whistled and peeped, and they responded. She then stepped aside. Prince Levan approached them. “May there always be wind under your wings. My Lords.” He bowed to the two eagles.

“I am Lord Aaron. This is my brother Lord Argo.” One of the eagles spoke. “We were summoned. Who has activated the vest?” The two brothers scanned the assembled group.

“You! What is your name?” Aaron had singled out Jaymar.

“It was me.” Ambrose stepped forward in front of Jaymar.

“No.” Argo counted. He flicked his wing in Ambrose direction and a gust of wind knocked him to the ground. Udolf drew his axe and was at Ambrose’s side in a flash.

“Put your weapon down.” Commanded Lord Aaron.

Jaymar stepped forward. “My name is Jaymar and these are all my friends. Please let us not fight.”

Aaron looked closely at Jaymar. “We have not come to fight but to serve the wearer of the vest. Our ancestors have watched over Aerie and the vest for generations waiting for the day when an Air Elemental could command the vest again.” He tilted his head to the side studying Jaymar before adding. “You may put it on.”

Ambrose was back on his feet. Jaymar looked at him for guidance.

“Jaymar it is shrouded in magic. I do not know what it will do. I would caution you against trying it on until...”

Argo interrupted him. “Silence. Ambrose. We know who you are. You are a ’Keeper’ and serve a different purpose. The boy can make his own decision.”

Elemental Loretta flashed a glance in Ambrose’s direction. ′Can this be true?′ She was trying hard to contain her excitement. The tension between the group was high. Elemental Brentlina looked shocked. “A Keeper you say. Your Highness, arrest him.” She urged the Prince.

“No. Wait.” Levan commanded his guards.

Jaymar stepped up next to the stand and undid the front of the vest. The feathers on the waistcoat ruffled at his touch. Slowly he lifted it off the stand and put it on. Surprisingly it fitted well, once he had done up all the buttons. Aaron, Argo and Solana all peeped and whistled joyously.

“We knew this time would come.” Lord Aaron commented.

Solana spoke to Jaymar. “How does it feel?”

“The tingling has gone, but there is something in my mind.” Jaymar replied.

“Over time the vest will bond with you and using its powers will become second nature to you.” Solana added.

“What powers?” Jaymar was curious.

“Use your mind. You can already see and control your Elemental glow. Look deeper, there will be another.” She added an excited peep.

Ambrose warned Jaymar. “Jaymar, be careful. You are a class three Elemental but still very young. Don’t let the power overwhelm you.”

Jaymar concentrated on his inner glow. Suddenly, for the first time, he saw something else deeper. A simmering diamond. He saw all four elements and then two large beautiful white wings magically appeared out the back of the waistcoat. Jaymar looked at them over his shoulder.

“Wow. Did I do that?” He made them stretch and he ruffled the feathers.

“Yes.” Lord Aaron confirmed. “This is just the beginning of your journey. Lord Jaymar.”

Aaron, Argo and Solana all bowed their head to Jaymar. The surrounding group were all in awe of what had just happened.

Eventually, Prince Levan spoke. “This is amazing. I welcome you, Lord Jaymar to the House of Aerie. It is time to rejoice and celebrate. Please come and join me for a feast.” Levan indicated for Jaymar to follow him. Jaymar looked to Ambrose for guidance. Ambrose just nodded his head and smiled.

Commander Roxy ordered some of her Aerie Eagles to remain and guard the Maze entrance. Cargan excused himself and re-entered the Maze. Everyone else followed Prince Levan and Jaymar down to the palace.

Solana told Jaymar as they walked that he could retract his wings back into the waistcoat if he found them awkward. For the time being, he was happy to have them out to admire them. The group met Princess Pipa and Levan did the introductions, then the royal couple led the group into the formal dining room. Seating was arranged for everyone. Aaron and Argo remained standing either side of Jaymar. Jaymar finally retracted his wings, so he could sit comfortably. Solana and Jalen were both provided with a backless chair so that their wings would not be affected.

During this whole time, Ambrose remained quiet. He was watching Jaymar closely and realised that his protégé was the centre of attention. He was wondering what was in store for Jaymar now. Ambrose also noticed that both Loretta and Brentlina, who were seated together, were both staring at him and had been whispering to each other.

When the main meal had been cleared away, Prince Levan called for quiet.

“This is indeed an amazing occurrence. Firstly, I must ask, Jaymar where are you from?”

Jaymar was seated next to Levan. “I am from Little Haven, a small village on Auroras Minor.” He replied tentatively.

“Any links to Aerie in your family?” Asked Levan.

“None that I know of.” Jaymar shrugged his shoulders.

“Have you been tested for Elemental powers?” Brentlina interrupted.

“Not formally. Not by an Elemental.” Jaymar gave Ambrose a sideways glance.

“Perhaps it is time to hear from Ambrose.” Prince Levan turned his attention to Ambrose. “Commander Roxy has only briefly mentioned that you met near Pinemarsh.” Levan added.

Ambrose took a moment to gather his thoughts. He gave the Elementals a quick glance then addressed the Prince. “Your Highness, Prince Levan. I am a leader within the Keepers organisation and I am an Elemental.” There were gasps from the Elementals. Levan raised his hand calling for quiet.

“I am Jaymar’s Godfather and discovered his Elemental powers quite by accident. He doesn’t have any Elementals in his immediate family or recent ancestors. The Keepers mission is to guard the four ancient Elemental gems, until the day they can be restored to four new Councillors. Then the Council of the Elementals can be reformed and Mikaia’s natural order and balance will be restored. I noticed that your resident Centurion is absent. The Centurion Order is corrupt, and I believe that the Head Master of the High School for Elementals is the driving force behind recent disturbing events. Such as the daytime attacks by the Dark Terror and the Animoid attacks.”

“This is preposterous.” Elemental Brentlina blurted out.

“Quiet!” Levan commanded. “Master Ambrose, please continue.”

“Our being here has happened by chance. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, a search party of Dark Ones captured Jaymar. He was taken to the Well of Darkness and was to be presented to Calzar their leader. Luckily, Calzar had already left, taking a large force to a cave near Bundamook. I surmise that the Dark Terror will join forces with the Animoid Army and attack the Gap. Cargan was able to guide us through the Maze to a location near that cave and we were able to rescue Jaymar before Calzar could do him any harm. The rescue did not happen without a fight. Dark Ones pursued us and our avenue of escape was blocked. We did manage to evade our pursuers and by chance met up with Commander Roxy near Pinemarsh.”

Prince Levan looked at the Commander for a response.

“I can confirm that we met near Pinemarsh. I can also confirm that Prince Tolgarn and his army, which has been considerably bolstered by Animoids, is advancing on the Gap. I gave up the pursuit of the group of Animoids near Pinemarsh and ordered my remaining scouting party to return to Aerie. Ambrose offered me a quick return to Aerie via the Maze, guided by Cargan.” Roxy nodded towards Ambrose so that he could continue.

However, Solana interrupted. “The Eagles have reported Dark Ones searching the mountains and that Tolgarn’s army has set up camp at the Gap.”

“Aspects of your story seem to ring true, Master Ambrose. What do you know of the Lizard soldiers and what part do they play in these developments?” Prince Levan wanted Ambrose to continue.

“Your Highness, Uparta the former leader of the Lizards, has taken a large contingent of Lizards and left Lockmort. I believe he has joined forces with the Animoid Army. His brother, Kamboro has taken over as the new leader in Lockmort. He is quite different from his brother. In fact, he is in the early stages of negotiations with Princess Sienna of Pukavan for a peace treaty. Kamboro sent Lizard soldiers to Gymbala and they were instrumental in saving the city from a Dark Terror attack. My understanding is the Lizards are currently not present at the Gap, meaning they must be being kept back for some other task.”

“A small contingent came here and camped on our doorstep for a couple of days. It was very strange. They were supposedly chased off by Prince Tolgarn, but given what you say, I feel that was a rouse.” Prince Levan paused a moment then asked. “Master Ambrose, you have given me much to think about. One question remains. Why are you here?”

“Your Highness, as I mentioned, because of the chance meeting with Commander Roxy. Maybe it is the Elements. Maybe we were drawn here to unite Jaymar with the vest.” Ambrose did not want to say too much more.

“And what about the Gap? Do you intend to fight?” Levan pressed for an answer.

“I am sworn to the Keepers cause and to protect Jaymar. I would prefer to keep Jaymar away from any fighting.” Ambrose concluded.

Elemental Brentlina couldn’t control herself any longer. “Your Highness, I must protest. This renegade and the boy cannot go free. They must all be held until Centurion Everett returns. It is preposterous to think the Head Master or the Centurion Order is somehow involved in these recent events. I hope you don’t place any credence in what this outlawed Keeper says.”

Prince Levan stood up and call to his guards. “Place Elemental Brentlina under house arrest and escort her back to the Wind House of Worship. You are to remain confined to your rooms and you will not interfere. I will deal with Centurion Everett when he returns.”

Brentlina started to protest but two guards moved in and gently took her by the arm and guided out of the dining room. Levan looked at Elemental Loretta. “Do I need to detain you as well?”

“No, Your Highness. I’ve pledged my loyalty to you and the people of Aerie.” She responded with a bow.

Lunch was over and Ambrose was eager to be moving on. He wanted to get Jaymar safely back to Pukavan before deciding on his next move. He was about to speak when Lord Aaron interrupted him.

“Prince Levan, we must take Lord Jaymar with us to meet our kin. Plus, there is much he needs to learn about the vest. Now that your meeting is over we will depart.”

Jaymar was confused and scared. Ambrose stood up to protest. Argo stepped closer to Jaymar and said. “Ambrose, you need not fear us. We too are here to protect Lord Jaymar. Where we take him now you cannot follow.” The two Apex Eagles peeped and whistled to each other.

Solana stood up. “I will act as a go-between. Ambrose, I will keep you informed.”

Things were starting to get tense again. Fineen and Udolf were about to draw their weapons. Ambrose even thought of invoking a fireball. Then Jaymar stood up and his wings reappeared from the back of the vest.

“I will go with them. Ambrose, I will rejoin you as soon as I can.” He paused to reflect a moment. “Give my love to my parents when you see them. By the Elements. Goodbye for now.” Jaymar turned and marched out of the room with the two Apex Eagles at his side. Solana quickly followed.

A couple of Roxy’s Aerie Eagles moved and blocked any chance of Ambrose chasing after them.

“Ambrose, let him go.” Prince Levan commanded. “For the moment, Jaymar must take a different path. I think you should reconsider your involvement in the defence of the Gap. Even for your long-term goal, the High Prince of the East must prevail. You are welcome to stay tonight while you weigh up your options.”

Ambrose slumped back in his chair. “Thank you, Your Highness, we will accept your offer.” Fineen and Udolf relaxed.

Once Jaymar, Solana and the Apex Eagles were outside. Solana turned to Jaymar. “Do you know how to fly?”

“Yes.” He responded. “Although not with real wings.”

“The vest will aid you. Can you mind speak, as it will be easier to communicate when we are flying?” She asked while flexing her wings.

Can you hear me?” Jaymar projected his thoughts.

Very good. Lord Aaron, lead the way.” Solana also issued a peep.

The two Apex Eagles powerful wings lifted them off the ground. Solana waited for Jaymar to follow. He flexed his wings again, whistled up some wind and took off. It felt awkward at first but the wings seemed to know what to do and they beat powerfully lifting him into the air.

“Wow. This is amazing.” He shouted as he gained in confidence. Solana was right by his side.

They rose swiftly up into the afternoon sky. The mountains behind Aerie fell away as they continued to climb. Eventually, the Apex Eagles levelled out. Solana and Jaymar were right behind. It was the highest Jaymar had ever been and it unnerved him a bit.

No need to be afraid. Your vest will not fail you.” Solana reassured him. “It is not far now.”

They had flown well past Solana’s cave and the other eagles roost. They were heading deep into the mountains. Just after they passed over one of the highest peaks, Aaron and Argo began to spiral down. Jaymar saw where they were heading.

Carved out of the side of one of the mountains was a flat ledge surrounded by an amphitheatre. Sheer cliffs surrounded it and fell away below the ledge. The four of them glided in and landed on the ledge. Jaymar stumbled a bit as he landed. What appeared to be cave entrances were dotted around the amphitheatre. Jaymar watched in awe as Apex Eagles started to come out of the caves or land from above. They were all as big as Lords Aaron and Argo. The sound was deafening as they all began whistling and peeping at Aaron and Argo’s return. The two lords responded and Solana joined in.

Jaymar could hear a chorus in his mind. “Hail brothers. Hail Lords.”

Lord Aaron signalled for Jaymar to come forward and stand with them. He moved forward and stood between the two lords. Solana remained a short distance behind.

Slowly the noisy greeting started to subside and the welcoming Eagles formed a semi-circle in front of Jaymar. Jaymar tried to count their number. He estimated there were more than twenty. In the centre of the semi-circle was an impressive looking Apex Eagle. It stepped forward and spoke.

“Welcome Lord Jaymar. I am Aria. You have surprised us all. We are overjoyed with your arrival.” She and all the Apex Eagles then bowed to him.

“Hello, Lord Aria. I don’t know what to say.” Jaymar stumbled with his words.

“You can just call me Aria. Only Lord Aaron and Lord Argo are Lords amongst us. But you have now joined us as a Lord and are their equal. We are, however, all related. Brothers, sisters and cousins. We have been waiting a long time for this day.” She then peeped with joy.

Jaymar was confused. “What do you want from me?”

“You are the wearer of the vest. You will bring us and Aerie renewed prosperity. Solana will explain. Now it is time for you to settle in and rest. You have come a long way. We will talk in the morning. Lords Aaron and Argo will show you to your roost.” All the Apex Eagles bowed again. Aaron signalled Jaymar to follow him as he walked through the middle of the semi-circle. The others parted to let them through.

Aaron and Argo guided Jaymar to a cave in the centre of the amphitheatre. They stopped at the entrance. “We will stand guard.” The two Apex Eagles took up positions on either side of the entrance. Solana then ushered Jaymar inside.

The cave opened out into a large room, which was dimly lit by a glow coming from further within. The room consisted of a bed covered in downy feathers, a table and a couple of chairs. Running water could be heard coming from somewhere. On the table was a large platter of assorted fruits and nuts and an empty jug.

“I know it is a bit sparse, but I hope you will be comfortable.” Solana let Jaymar look around. “You can fill the jug with water from the back of the cave. There is also a privy of sorts.”

“What did Aria mean, when she said the Apex Eagles and Aerie will prosper?” Jaymar asked as he sat on the edge of the bed.

Solana sat next to him on the bed. “This may be hard to believe. The Apex Eagles are the last descendants of an ancient race. Their fate has somehow become bound to the vest you now wear. They have been living in limbo while the vest was dormant.”

“What does that mean?” Jaymar was a little confused.

“No offspring. No children.” Solana replied.

“But the vest has been dormant for generations, hasn’t it?”

“Yes. The Apex Eagles live for a very long time, but they are not immortal. They are dying out. Your arrival means they can prosper again.”

“What about you? Are you an Apex eagle?”

“Aria is my mother. I was one of the last born, but because I am an Animoid, I have chosen to live amongst the lesser Eagles. Plus, I have been able to keep a closer watch over Aerie from their nesting place.” She paused a moment to let Jaymar think about what she had said. “Tomorrow the Apex Eagle will anoint you as one of their own. More will be revealed then. Now it is time for you to rest. I can stay if you wish.”

“That would be nice. Thank you.” Jaymar’s wings had retracted into the vest, so he lay down on the bed. Weariness washed over him. He had had a traumatic time and it finally had caught up to him.

Ambrose and his friends had been shown to a room for them to rest and sleep overnight. They were all dumb-foundered by what had happened.

Fineen eventually spoke. “Ambrose, what does this all mean?”

“I don’t know, Fineen. This is totally unexpected. Things are rapidly changing, which I think just reinforces my belief that Jaymar is so important and that we are closer to regaining all the Elemental Gems than I thought.” Ambrose searched the faces of his friends.

“What did Lord Argo mean? He said they knew you and that you are a Keeper.” Udolf asked.

“That was a surprise. I have heard of the Apex Eagles, but it was mostly rumour or folk law. All I knew was that they had some connection to Aerie.” Ambrose replied.

“Aark. What do you intend to do now?” Jalen asked.

“I was hoping to take Jaymar back to his parents. Continue his tuition in Pukavan. Maybe, once he was safe back in Pukavan I might have returned to see what I could do to help defend the Gap, but that was least on my mind. Jaymar’s parents must be informed but I cannot leave Jaymar.”

Their thoughts were interrupted as Elemental Loretta entered their room. She immediately knelt in front of Ambrose. “Master Ambrose, I have dreamed of the day I might meet you. By the Elements, I am a Keeper.” She whispered. “We have a strong Keeper organisation here in Aerie and we are at your service.”

“Elemental Loretta, this is a surprise. I am pleased we have your support. Does Prince Levan know of your involvement?” Ambrose asked.

“No, he does not suspect anything.” She remained on her knees. “What will you have us do?”

“I am sorry, at the moment I am still trying to comprehend what has happened to my protégé, Jaymar.”

“You have nothing to fear. Once the Apex Eagles anoint him as one of their Lords, he will be free to come and go. They will not hold him captive.” She smiled trying to reassure the group.

“Are you sure?” Ambrose’s heart was lifted.

“I am certain, Master Ambrose. In a day or two, he will return.”

The group began to feel a little easier.

“So, we wait?” Udolf asked.

“I still need to let Jaymar’s parents know what has happened. Someone will need to return to Pukavan.” Ambrose surveyed the group.

“Aark. I’m used to being your messenger. I will go.” Jalen commented.

“Thank you, Jalen. However, I don’t think you should fly all that way. It’s getting dangerous out there. We don’t know what the Dark Terror is up to. I will ask Cargan to guide you back to the cave-dwelling.” Ambrose then looked at Rafeeq. “I think that Jalen should not go alone. Rafeeq do you mind?”

“Eeek. I suppose so.” He wasn’t overly happy with the request.

“Master Ambrose.” Loretta interrupted. “Will you go and help defend the Gap? We should do something.” She stood up.

Ambrose looked doubtful. “I don’t think our small group will make much of a difference. The defenders are vastly outnumbered.”

To everyone’s surprise, Commander Roxy marched into the room. “Holding council are we?” She didn’t wait for a reply. “I am sorry, but I did overhear something about defending the Gap. If it is of any use. I am sure I can convince Prince Levan to allow a contingent of Aerie Eagles to join the fight. The Ancient, Cargan could get us there through the Maze.”

Ambrose pondered this latest development. “Unfortunately, I believe the Gap will fall. However, any delay or impact we could inflict on the enemy may have a greater bearing in the long run. Let us all sleep on what we have discussed, and tomorrow morning reconvene with Prince Levan.” Everyone agreed, Loretta and Roxy left Ambrose and his friends to rest.

The Gap

Finally, the Elemental that Centurion Santos was waiting for arrived from Kaemoora. Santos had visited Calzar, trying to convince him to forget the search. The main objective was Bundamook. Now he had enough Elementals he needed to guarantee he could maintain a thunderstorm all day. Santos had kept away from Prince Tolgarn but now he could report he was ready.

Prince Tolgarn was in his tent in a foul mood as ever. He seemed to be continually arguing with the Animoid leaders. The bickering between groups had gotten worse as they all sat around idle. Centurion Santos entered the tent to deliver his news.

“Your Highness Prince Tolgarn.” Santos bowed to the Prince. General Loktah was in attendance as usual. “The Elemental from Kaemoora has arrived. I will go to Calzar tonight and urge him to attack Bundamook tomorrow.”

“About time. I am plagued by incompetence and unrest. Get on with it.” Tolgarn sipped his ever-present glass of wine.

“Your Highness, Calzar will want an assurance that you will support his attack on the ground.” Santos pressed the point.

“What do you suggest?” Tolgarn was not really wanting to commit himself.

“You could have your troops attack first signalling your intent and then Calzar could launch his attack. It does not have to be a full-on assault but enough to force Calzar’s hand.” Santos was hedging his bets. Hoping Tolgarn would agree.

Tolgarn considered the idea for a moment then issued his command. “Very well. General Loktah, prepare all your Animoids for the assault. When the thunderstorm is fully developed you can send a small advance contingent to satisfy the Dark Terror leader. I will command the remaining combined forces ready to attack the Gap. That will be all. Go.” He waved his hand dismissing the Centurion and the General.

Santos bowed before leaving the tent. He went and gathered his Elementals to discuss plans for tomorrow.

Daarook

Centurion Santina arrived late in the afternoon. She immediately went to see her sect leader Centurion Graguut.

“Your Eminence, I have important news.” She addressed her leader.

“Centurion Santina, I have heard that things have stalled. Why is Prince Tolgarn waiting?” Graguut was seated, wine goblet in hand. He took a slow sip.

“Your Eminence, Calzar’s initial attack was not supported by Prince Tolgarn’s ground forces. He is refusing to attack again unless we can provide a thunderstorm for a full day and Tolgarn attacks Bundamook at the same time. Centurion Santos has called for additional assistance. I would have thought he would have that by now.”

“What other news do you have?” Graguut shifted his huge frame.

“The renegade Elemental has surfaced near Bundamook and he has a protégé.”

“Are you sure?” Graguut leaned forward at the news.

“Calzar had a boy, he claims is an Elemental. I am positive that the renegade came and rescued him. Calzar is searching the mountains in order to recapture them.” The last part Santina was a bit hesitant to reveal.

“So, you are surmising that the renegade places some value on the boy. He risked snatching him from Calzar. That does sound interesting. Any idea what Calzar was going to do with the boy?”

“I can only guess, Your Eminence, but as a potential bargaining point with the Head Master.” She replied.

“Yes, you may be right. I suppose we should report this to the Head Master.” He started to slowly ease his huge frame out of his seat.

That evening the two Centurions visited the Head Master. Santina told the Head Master of her news. He listened closely to all she had to say.

“An Elemental boy you say.” He pondered.

“Yes, Head Master.”

“That makes some sense.” He remembered back to the tunnel behind Daarook when it was blocked. “And you think he is a protégé of the renegade Elemental. It would be interesting to know what Elemental powers he has. I will send Elbert to Calzar to monitor his search.”

“Head Master, what will you have us do?” Graguut asked.

“Send Centurion Santina to Sweetsprings, I believe Anastas has set up his headquarters there. I want some eyes and ears in his camp. That will do for now.” He waved his hand signalling the end to their meeting.

The two Centurions left and headed for Graguut’s chambers.

“Take Centurion Riley with you to Sweetsprings. He can report your replaceings back to me.” Graguut commented.

“Yes, Your Eminence.” Santina left Graguut to arrange her departure.

Back in the Head Masters chamber, Elbert asked. “Do you really want Calzar to capture the Elementals?” The vulture shifted his head to one side.

“I would prefer he kills them, but the boy might be of some value. Go and stay with Calzar until the Gap falls. If the Elementals are caught report immediately to me.”

The Head Master opened his window and Elbert hopped across the room and flew out the window.

Tobias had taken notice of Graguut and Santina’s visit. He would make contact with his Keeper colleagues as soon as possible.

Calzar’s Cave

Centurion Santos had arrived just before nightfall. Calzar was preparing for another night of searching. He had extended his search as far as possible for one night of flying. Now, he had decided, his search parties would need to replace other caves and extend the search even further.

A guard approached him with the news the Centurion had arrived. Calzar marched out to the entrance.

“Calzar, have you found them?” Santos came straight to the point.

“They cannot hide forever. What do you want?” Calzar snapped back.

“I have all the Elementals I need to maintain a thunderstorm for you. Prince Tolgarn is ready to attack. He has ordered his army to prepare for tomorrow.” Santos eyes the Dark Terror leader waiting for his answer.

“I will not attack alone. What assurance can you give?” Calzar was prepared to delay while he continued his search.

“Two things. First, Prince Tolgarn will initiate the attack. Then you are to follow his lead. Attack Bundamook and he will fully commit. Second, once Bundamook has fallen, I will create a thunderstorm over the mountains for you to search both night and day.” Silence fell between them as Calzar considered the offer.

Calzar finally spoke. “I agree.” Santos breathed a sigh of relieve.

“I will be back with my team in the morning. Let’s meet again then.” Santos turned and walked away. His Elementals were already waiting for him at the bottom of the mountain.

“We will camp here tonight.” He ordered them on his return.

Calzar walked back into the cave and started issuing orders. The search would be cut short tonight. He wanted his Dark Ones to be ready for battle tomorrow.

Santos and his Elementals were sitting around a small campfire when the sound of flapping wings startled them. They all jumped to their weapons ready for a fight. They relaxed once Elbert became visible in the campfire light.

“Centurion, the Head Master has sent me.” Elbert croaked as he settled by the fire.

“I gather Centurion Santina has informed the Head Master of the news?” Santos asked.

“Yes. I will go and see Calzar now.” Elbert rustled his feathers. “You intent to attack tomorrow?”

“Yes. Calzar is aware.” Santos replied.

Elbert stretched his wings and took off for Calzar’s cave.

Calzar had sent his search parties out already. He had decided to keep some of his Dark Ones back and he stayed behind. He wanted all his strength for tomorrow.

Elbert landed at the cave entrance and made his way inside. A guard stopped him just inside the entrance. “I will see your leader.” The guard couldn’t resist and led Elbert to Calzar.

Calzar was surprised to see the vulture and angrily dismissed the guard.

“Go back to your post. You weakling.” The guard grovelled as he retreated.

“The Head Master has sent me to ensure you attack Bundamook tomorrow. Also, I will assist in your search. Have you found the Elementals yet?”

Calzar snarled. “No. Do as you wish.”

“I will return in the morning.” Elbert left Calzar. He exited the cave and took off to scan the mountains himself.
