Chapter 1251 Why Will You Not Believe Me
It was evening when Nathan returned to his home located at Riverside. At this time, his mother-in-law had already prepared the food.
Benson, Kylie, and Queenie were already sitting at the table, ready to have dinner.
Noticing that Penny was nowhere to be seen, Nathan frowned and asked, "Where's Penny?"
Benson answered with a bitter smile, "She's working overtime with some of the executives of thecompany. It seems like the company has run into a huge trouble. She wants to discuss it witheveryone so they can come up with a plan to prevent it from worsening.”
It turned out that although Penny had decided to not compromise with the Pirate King's demand ofpaying the ten billion toll, she knew that by going against the Pirate King's extortion, they wouldevoke the wrath of the Pirate King, Odysseus Blackwood. So she wanted to discuss with theexecutives of the company to formulate a set of follow-up protocols.
Nathan didn't know whether to laugh or to cry. "I already told her I would settle this trivial matter. Iguess she's still worried after all. Forget it. You all can have dinner without me. I'll stop by thecompany for a bit."
As soon as he finished speaking, Nathan grabbed his car keys and left.
At that moment, it was already nightfall. The city lights shone brightly under the night sky.
When Nathan reached Cross Group, it was already about seven in the evening.
There was a long table in the middle of the conference room. Sitting on both sides of the table werethe executives of Cross Group. Penny, on the other hand, was sitting in the chair of the presidentand presided over the meeting.
The main issue that was being discussed at the meeting was Cross Group's rejection of the PirateKing's extortion. The executives were at a loss of what to do should the Pirate King, Odysseus
Blackwood, decided to take revenge on Cross Group, and perhaps even going as far as to murderthem.
Just then, the people who suggested paying the toll to save themselves before began clamoring insuccession.
"We should have gone with my suggestion and paid them the toll to ensure our safety."
"That's right. Now that we've rejected paying them, we'll be facing the wrath of OdysseusBlackwood and his men. Who's to say we'll make it out of this alive?"
"President Smith, I already told you, reporting this to the police is useless. They're only good forcatching petty thieves and thugs. What are they supposed to do against large-scale pirates?”
"That's right, President Smith. You were the one who was unwilling to spend the money to ensureour safety. Now, everyone's lives are in danger because of you. What are you going to do aboutthis?” Penny furrowed her eyebrows in frustration. She was in a difficult position. Paying the piratesmeant that she would be going against her own principles, not to mention ten billion was a hugesum of money. It was Cross Group's hard-earned money, so how could they have just given itaway?
Not paying the pirates, however, meant that the lives of the executives of Cross Group would be atstake. If anyone of them were to die at the hands of the pirates, Penny would have to shoulder theguilt for the rest of her life.
She tried to comfort them, "Keep it together, everyone. The reason I convened this meeting isprecisely to talk about this problem. Let's see how we can hire more bodyguards to protect
everyone's safety..."
However, many of them weren't buying it.
Someone continued yelling, "Are bodyguards even useful? They're pirates of the Demon's Lair.Odysseus Blackwood is known as the God of the Sea. Under his command are the Seven Kings ofDemon's Lair, all of which are extremely powerful pirates. Can our bodyguards really handle suchpeople?"
Right at that moment, Nathan pushed open the door to enter. He spoke indifferently, "If any of youare afraid, you're free to resign and leave Cross Group. Naturally, they won't come looking for yousince you're not part of Cross Group anymore."
Everyone at the scene fell silent when they heard Nathan's words.
They were reluctant to resign because Cross Group had excellent benefits.
When Penny saw Nathan appear, she instinctively felt a lot more in control. She quietly breathed asigh of relief and stood up. She whispered to her husband, "Hubby, why are you here?"
Nathan smiled and answered, "Weren't you all going to fight among yourselves if I hadn't come?"
Everyone, including Penny was stunned.
Nathan carried on speaking with a smile, "I've already told you all that I'll deal with Odysseus andhis band of rampant pirates before noon tomorrow. Why won't you guys believe me?"
Penny couldn't help but whisper back, "Hubby, Odysseus is the Pirate King. He won't be as easy tohandle as you think..."
Before Penny was able to finish her sentence, Nathan was already chuckling. "Odysseus hasalready been captured. The Demon's Lair has fallen."
