Salute To The General -
Chapter 1580
Chapter 1580
Dorthea's wrinkled face shone in delight as she tucked her hair behind her ear. “When I was thirty,my family died in a car accident, leaving me alone. I tried to commit suicide a few times until I tookin a child with special needs left on the streets. I brought him up until he got a job and lived a normallife in society.”
She lamented. “I was so thrilled for him. Through this experience, I found my purpose in life. Later, Itook in more children, and the government allowed me to build this orphanage. It's a hard task, but Ienjoy it."
Penny praised her. “Ms. Molven, someone ordinary like you can also create miracles. You have myutmost respect.”
Dorthea blushed in embarrassment. She hurriedly offered, “Come in, please. The kids and
I will bring you around to visit their quarters, canteen, classrooms and other places so you get toknow us better.”
“Sounds good,” Penny said.
Back then, the orphanage used to be an old church. There was a huge yard and an old churchbuilding.
The European-style church building had seven levels. It was built of wood.
This was the very place that housed all the kids.
The kitchen and storeroom were on the first floor. Going up to the second floor, the canteen cameinto sight. The third floor was where the children study and read. Dorthea's office was on the fourthfloor, along with some storage rooms.
The living quarters encompassed the fifth to seventh floors.
Under the lead of Dorthea and the orphans, Penny and her company walked around from thekitchen on the first floor until the living quarters on the seventh floor.
On the top floor, which was the seventh floor, Penny told Dorthea. “Ms. Molven, this building is oldand made of wood. Besides being unhygienic, it's also a safety hazard.”
She pointed out. “Look, there's no escape route here. If there's a fire, it will be hard for the kids toescape.
“I know,” replied Dorthea awkwardly. “But we don't have money to improve the living facilities.”
Penny promptly gave her order to the senior management of Cross Group. “We'll donate anotherten million to the orphanage in Cross Group's name so they can build new living quarters.”
“Yes!” said Kylie and the rest.
Dorthea was wild with joy and thanked Penny profusely while the kids cheered in delight.
“Ms. Smith, we've given the children fire safety lessons. Also, we carried out fire drills regularly
But before she could finish, everyone sensed a faint burnt smell in the air.
Dorthea exclaimed, “What is that? Is there a fire?”
All at once, a commotion ensued.
They soon realized the kitchen on the first floor
was on fire.
The fire swiftly spread to the second floor. As they were on the seventh floor, it took them a while torealize a fire had broken out.
The blood drained from Penny's face.
Her worst fears had come true.
The wooden building was on fire while everyone and the kids were trapped within!
The orphans immediately burst into loud wails.
Dorthea and her staff panicked, but there was no escape route on the seventh floor.
Penny immediately tried to calm everyone down before telling Ava to call the authorities.
The fire engulfed the building in no time and had spread to the third floor. Judging by the speed, thebuilding would collapse before the firefighters arrived.
The children's shrill cries resounded in the rooms.
Meanwhile, in a black Land Rover across the street.
Phoebe and Santiago were watching the entire debacle in the vehicle.
Arrogance was written all over Santiago's face. “Nathan will be devastated if Penny died in the fire, right?”
Phoebe sneered. “Ha! Good job, Santiago. We want to torture Nathan.”
