Salute To The General

Chapter 1728

Garrett added, “Clifford was born in a prominent family. He represents the interests of a largenumber of the rich and powerful. Many of them, as well as members of his faction, worked hard tosupport him and promote him to the position of president. As for Zion, he also came from aprestigious family that has been in politics for generations. Zion not only represents the interests ofsome of the prominent families but he also has the support of Mr. Windsor; all these people willstand behind Zion in his race against Clifford. Meanwhile, I came from a lowly background and amusually too proud to form cliques with them, so I don't belong to any faction. Naturally, I don't haverich and powerful allies. How could I compete with people like Clifford and Zion?”

Nathan calmly replied, “You have a lowly background and don't have the support of the rich andpowerful. You also don't belong to any faction, so you don't have a large support base. But it doesn'tmean that no one supports you. While you were serving the people all over the country, you've wonyourself a good reputation and also the hearts of the common folks. You have the support of thepeople, and mine too!”

Hearing this, Garrett said gratefully, “Nathan, you flatter me, but I don't think I'll stand a chance.”

“It's not that you don't stand a chance. You just can't see the situation clearly as you're in the middleof it, but to me as an outsider, the scene is crystal-clear,” remarked Nathan seriously. “You stand achance a sporting chance but

you have to wait for the opportunity to come. And as you wait for that opportunity, you have toprepare for it. The sooner you prepare and the more fully you do so, the greater chance you willhave to become the next president and make full

use of your talent.”

After all, it is the dream of many people to become president and make full use of their talent.

Garrett used to have the same dream, but he was a low-key and down-to-earth man who was notvery ambitious.

At this moment, though, he was moved by Nathan.

Staring intently at Nathan, he asked, “Nathan, you said that I have a sporting chance but the righttime hasn't come. So please advise me: when will the right time come?”

Nathan picked up the wine glass and took a sip.

“I said that I don't think Clifford or Zion will win.

People who support Clifford will not agree to

Zion's accession, while Mr. Windsor and those who support Zion will not let Clifford take over. Iguess there'll be a deadlock in their race, which will make it difficult to elect a new president.”

Garrett agreed with Nathan's analysis. A majority vote was needed in order for one to be electedpresident. Although Clifford had the upper hand over Zion, it was still difficult for him to win amajority vote.

Nathan smiled and went on, “If the people who support Zion and those who support Clifford standagainst each other and refuse to yield, there'll be an impasse and no new president can be elected. At that time, they must replace a middle ground that is acceptable to both parties. You have no factionsor allies, but you don't have enemies, either. When they're in a stalemate, it's very likely that they'llchoose someone who doesn't belong to either side. Among the cabinet members, you're the onlyone who fits the criterion. Both parties will be able to accept you as the president. That is yourchance.”

Garrett was shocked; he did not expect Nathan to take such a long-range view of things. UponNathan's guidance, he saw a glimmer of hope for his future.

Suddenly, he rose to his feet, bowed at Nathan, and said gratefully, “Thank you, Nathan, for yourguidance!”

Meanwhile, Clifford suddenly sneezed in his study room.

Clifford was still planning to get back at Nathan after becoming president.

What he never expected was that Nathan had already enlightened Garrett and found him anextremely strong opponent.
