Salute To The General -
Chapter 1843
Chapter 1843
Meanwhile, in the White House's study.
President Windsor was sitting in his chair with his eyes closed and listening to his subordinate's reports.
Hailey stood respectfully in front of him going through the day's reports. She read out to him everything related to both Corey and Ceaser's death. Once Hailey's report was complete, Hansel was still sitting in his chair with his eyes closed.
Hailey then wondered if he was deep in thought or had simply fallen asleep.
As President Windsor didn't respond nor say a word, Hailey didn't dare interrupt and stood patiently by the side.
After a long while, she finally heard a sigh.
Hansel slowly opened his eyes and lamented, "It appears that I have been wrong."
Widening her eyes in surprise, Hailey asked, "President Windsor, how is it that you're wrong when it was Mr. Lucas and Mr. Davier that had allowed their conflict to go out of hand?"
Hansel explained calmly, "I didn't think Clifford was a good leader, hence preferred Zion to succeed me. I had thought he was an honest and steadfast man. But didn't expect him to tolerate his son's unscrupulous actions. He has disappointed me by not living up to my expectations. Perhaps, Nathan is right. Zion is not the best candidate."
Hailey was stunned by his words.
She could feel that the President was not only upset at the Machiavellian manner Clifford and Zion were feuding, but he was also disappointed in Zion's abilities, to the extent it had shaken his support for Zion.
Not daring to comment, Hailey lowered her head in silence.
However, Hansel asked her instead, "Hailey, what do you think about Garrett?"
She was stunned for a moment before replying immediately, "Mr. Woods has worked his way up from the bottom. He has an amiable personality and is meticulous in his work. Furthermore, he is humble and pragmatic. Lastly, he doesn't play politics and stays above the fray."
Hansel asked, "Is that all?"
Hailey was confused, "Mmm-hmm, did I miss anything?"
Hansel laughed in response. "No, you didn't.
Your observations are spot on."
"I share your sentiments about Garrett. Over the last two days, I have gone through his record and gained a detailed understanding of his character and work ethic. From there, I realized that he is someone extremely capable."
"Everywhere he goes, he produces exceptional results but has never boasted about them."
Hailey thought back for a moment and nodded, "Right, Mr. Woods has indeed produced outstanding results in all the districts and provinces he has served in."
Hansel added, "But he has kept too much of a low profile. To the extent his presence has been taken for granted. In truth, he is extremely talented and I appreciate the fact that he has an amiable personality, is pragmatic and exudes an air of humility. Furthermore, he doesn't align himself with any of the other factions and maintains a neutral stance. It's rare to replace someone that conducts himself with such fairness nowadays."
Hailey was surprised at the interest President Windsor was showing Garrett. Is he going to change his decision?
Looking at Hailey, Hansel smiled. "Aren't you surprise at why I brought Garrett up all of a sudden?"
Hailey replied honestly, "Yes!"
Hansel laughed but didn't explain. Instead, he plainly asked, "What's the progress on the conflict between Clifford and Zion?"
Hailey smiled wryly, "The Secret Service has found out that Zion's son had hired an assassin to kill Clifford's son. And then Clifford had ordered Zion's son killed. However, it now involves two members of the Cab and both of them are the leading contenders for the upcoming election. Therefore, we are unable to take any action until we receive your instructions."
Hansel snorted, "What's so difficult about it? Can't you just go by the book?"
Hailey replied awkwardly, "The elections are almost upon us and both the local and overseas media are watching closely. As both Zion and Clifford are important figures, wouldn't we embarrass ourselves in the eyes of the overseas media if we take action against them?
Hansel remarked, "That's true. I feel ashamed on their behalf even if they don't. What a disgrace both of them are."
Hailey added, "President Windsor, I feel that we have to be careful while dealing with this matter. Perhaps, we can cover it up for now and deal with it
later."
