Salute To The General -
Chapter 1857
Chapter 1857
The next day. Night fell, and streetlights illuminated the entire city.
At Cloud Palace.
It was Nathan's birthday and Thomas had everything ready beforehand. Dozens of tables had been set up at the restaurant to celebrate the man's birthday together with his friends and family.
As instructed by Nathan, Thomas didn't hold a grand party or invite any of the military leaders.
Hence, the guests were mostly Nathan's and Penny's friends and family.
Some business owners heard of the news and rushed over just to celebrate with him.
On the contrary, no politicians or military leaders showed up.
This was because Franklin Wilson, the commander-in-chief of the Channing military district, was in Brimmopolis for a meeting. Besides, the new mayor of Channing, Arthur Rivers, was Clifford's disciple.
The Davier family had a grudge against Nathan, so Arthur was against him as well. Since Arthur refused to attend Nathan's birthday banquet, his subordinates didn't come as well.
On top of that, many thought that they no longer needed to brown-nose Nathan, given he was not the General of the North anymore. Although only his family and the business partners of the Cross Group were present, Nathan showed no hint of disappointment.
Meanwhile, Nathan was no different from his usual self. Walking alongside Penny, he smiled and greeted the guests with Thomas trailing behind him. Soon, Sean turned up together with the Smiths.
Though Nathan was no longer the commander, the Cross Group was the largest pharmaceutical company in the nation, so he and Penny were still pivotal figures in the business arena.
With a grin on his face, Sean wished him, "Happy birthday, Nathan."
"Thank you, Grandpa." Nathan smiled warmly.
Penny quickly said, "Grandpa, please take a seat. It's been a long while since we last ate together.”
"Alright, alright." Sean let out a hearty laugh.
In the meantime, the guests arrived at the restaurant one after another. Soon, almost all the seats were filled. "Mr. Cross, shall we start now?" Thomas asked.
Nathan answered with a smile, "Yeah, since most of the guests are here. Ask the chef to start serving the food."
Just as Thomas was about to nod, a disturbing commotion came from the entrance of the restaurant. A group of aggressive men was seen barging into the place.
It was Toby Duncan and his subordinates.
Strutting into the restaurant, Toby sneered, "Wow, how lively! I thought Nathan would lose his influence. after being fired. It's so surprising to see that he still has quite a number of bootlickers around him.
Nathan's brows furrowed slightly.
Penny, Kylie, and Ava glared at these intruders in annoyance and bewilderment.
"Isn't he supposed to be in Alberesque? Why did he come to Channing?" Thomas couldn't resist asking.
Nathan tilted his head and asked, "Do you know him?"
"His name is Toby Duncan. He came
out of nowhere about one year ago. After you get rid of Dip Turner, the ruler of the South, Toby got a free ride and became the head of the
е
underworld in the South even though he isn't that competent. It's a typical example of when the cat's away, the mice will play," Thomas
mumbled.
Nathan was puzzled. I don't even know this man. Why did he come to my birthday banquet out of
the blue?
Toby and his subordinates stopped walking when they were right in front of Nathan.
With a faint smile, he gave Nathan the onceover. "Are you Nathan Cross?"
Thomas rebuked him straight away. "Toby, who the hell do you think you are? How dare you call Mr. Cross by his name!"
Scratching the tip of his nose, Toby replied with disdain, "Thomas, who do you think you are then? I'm talking to your master, so stop barking."
Anger shot through Thomas' chest at that insult. If it wasn't Nathan's birthday, he would've made a move against Toby.
Nathan replied in an icy tone. "I don't
care who the hell you are. Today is
my birthday and I'm having a banquet here with my friends and
family Don't stir up any trouble
Leave before I get mad, or else you'll have to face the music."
Toby grinned at him. "Haha. Don't be mad, Mr.
Cross. I know it's your birthday, and I didn't come to trouble you but to send you a gift on behalf of someone else.
With that, he turned around and waved at his subordinates. "Come on. Bring the gift over for Mr. Cross."
Soon, a subordinate approached them with a box in his hands.
Intrigued by the birthday gift, everyone in the dining hall watched them with curious faces. They already assumed that Toby was up to no good. But what's inside that box?
