Salute To The General -
Chapter 1871
Chapter 1871
"Greetings, President Woods!" Clifford and the others said in unison.
"Good morning, everyone!" Garrett replied with a smile.
Then, he pointed at Nathan and said, "Let me introduce someone. This is the Chief Military Governor I appointed."
"Good day to all of you!" Nathan greeted in a deep voice.
Then, Will and the other soldiers held up a hand in salutation. "Greetings, Chief Military Governor!"
However, Clifford, Jothan, Zion, and the other Cab members did not greet Nathan but exchanged glances with each other.
All the cab members turned to look at Clifford.
Understanding their intention, Clifford took two steps forward and queried politely, "President Woods, is he the Chief Military Governor you appointed?"
"Yes, Mr. Davier. Is there any problem?" Garrett grinned as he spoke.
"Not at all! But given that the Chief Military Governor holds the highest military command across the whole nation, it is a significant position that comes with a huge responsibility. So, I think even if you have appointed him, he should show us his capability to get our approval first," replied Clifford.
Upon hearing that, Garrett furrowed his brows.
He knew that he couldn't elect anyone without getting Clifford and the other Cab members' permission because he was a new president. Hence, he cast a glance at Zion, Jothan, and the others as he inquired, "Do you have the same thoughts?"
Not daring to make eye contact with Garrett, they lowered their heads and replied, "Yes, we think so as well. The Chief Military Governor is an important position, so the candidate must be a capable person. Please think twice before making the decision, President Woods!"
Hearing that, a trace of anger flashed across Garrett's eyes.
Meanwhile, Clifford darted a glance at Nathan and continued, "President Woods, we don't mean to go against you. We're only doing this for our country's sake. As of now, we know nothing about the Chief Military Governor at all, including his appearance. So it's only natural for us to have doubts about his capability in handling the military defense affairs of the nation."
Garrett flew into a rage when he heard Clifford's words.
Actually, the former had long known that implementing a new policy would affect the power and status of the cab members and that they would definitely object to it.
That was why Garrett wanted Nathan to hide his true identity by wearing a Leviathan mask when the latter appeared in front of the Cab members and soldiers.
His goal was to prevent Clifford from raising his objection.
However, never had he expected that Clifford and the others would be so resolute in going against his decision this time.
They still refused to recognize Nathan as the Chief Military Governor and even blocked the entrance of the Cab hall, not allowing the latter to enter it.
Garrett narrowed his eyes and said
in an icy tone, "The identity of the Chief Military Governor is top secret, and he is only answerable to me, so you don'need to know who he is However, since you think my
veline
decision is too hasty, I will give you a chance to test him on the spot. If he isn't competent enough to pass the assessment, I will grant your request to choose another person for the position."
On-site assessment!
Nathan was shocked upon hearing this.
Clifford, Zion, Jothan, and the other cab members were also utterly stunned at that point in time.
But soon, they exchanged knowing glances with each other.
Did President Woods just give us permission to assess the Chief Military Governor on the spot? This is a great opportunity for us!
They were as cunning as foxes.
To them, making things difficult for Nathan was just a piece of cake.
If Nathan could not handle it and made a fool of himself, his position as the Chief Military Governor would come to an abrupt end.
Then, Clifford and the other ministers would have a chance to recommend the candidates
who would bring them benefits.
If their men became the Chief
Military Governor, they would be able to manipulate the political direction and have the final say in important matters concerning the country.
When that thought crossed his mind, Clifford couldn't contain his excitement.
He replied loudly, "That's a brilliant
idea, President Woods! Since you said so, we'll follow your orders. So today, we will be assessing the capability of the Chief Military Governor. If he can pass the test, we will acknowledge him as our new Chief Military Governor. But if he fails, the task of re-selecting the candidate for this position will be handed over to our cab ministers."
