Salute To The General -
Chapter 2071
Chapter 2071
His last two statements made plain his intentions.
It would seem that he meant to retain the office of the Presidency, the seat of power, within the Daviers and the Crosses indefinitely. Nathan appeared calm on the surface but he was sneering inside.
To think that after his failed run at the Presidency, Clifford would still harbor wild ambitions of assuming the highest office in the land.
A pity for him then that Nathan would never allow himself to fall in with the likes of them.
Clifford watched in jittery anticipation as he awaited the Chief Military Governor's response.
The silence in the room deafens.
Nathan took his time, and lifted the glass to his mouth once more.
Only this time, he offered up no praise. "This wine has lost its flavor."
That drained the color from the faces of the Daviers.
A frown, too, formed between Clifford's eyes.
"Chief Military Governor?"
"I've posited my stance on this issue before and I'll reiterate it again for the last time, just so we're clear. I'm already married to a woman who I love. Thus, I cannot agree to a marital union with your family. Kindly do not bring this up again," he stated.
What? The Chief Military Governor's married? Why haven't we heard about this before? An excuse! It must be.A lie he weaved to turn down the proposal from us.
Clifford was a little flummoxed by the Chief Military Governor's refusal. The strong aligning with the strong to take the reins of the state of affairs and share the seat of power between themselves throughout the ages. Would that not be a wondrous thing?
Shae, whose eyes were transfixed upon the Chief Military Governor, dreamed of her own Cinderella story coming true.
She was profoundly agitated to hear that the man was already married.
The woman, too, did not want to believe it to be anything more than an excuse.
She was even more anxious than Clifford and could not restrain herself. "We've never heard of you mentioning this before, Chief Military Governor. Might it be because you think that I'm not good enough for you that you must come up with this excuse to turn us down?"
"The one who wishes to marry you is me, Shae Davier, and not that wanton woman Sophia. I implore you not to be mistaken that every girl in my family must be like my sister. I've admired you for so long, Chief Military Governor. Could I ask for you to give me a chance? To try to get to know me before you come to a decision?"
Everyone present was stunned at Shae's lack of reservation in promoting herself.
The person with the most awful expression in the room on her face was Sophia Davier. She trembled helplessly in the corner where she sat when she heard Shae's words.
Shae lifted her pretty face in defiance and eyed the Chief Military Governor with a sense of urgency.
She was not in the opinion that her own conduct had been inappropriate.
Even women of humble beginnings in antiquity who pursued their love with gusto became the stuff of legends.
As a modern woman born into affluence, she found nothing untoward in taking the initiative to attain her own happiness. Clifford, surprisingly, did not chide Shae for her indiscretion. Rather, he was more interested in what Nathan had to say. Nathan look upon the woman with quiet disdain.
How could she have claimed to long admired a man whose face she had never even seen?
The sheer absurdity of it all.
It would seem to him that she was one who would forsake her own modesty just to advance her own social standing.
"I've nothing against you. Like I said, I'm already married, and you're not my type."
That simple statement had Shae's slack-jawed.
The disappointment was apparent on the faces of other members of the family as well. All except for Sophia, who smirked at witnessing the rejection: If I can't marry the Chief Military Governor, slut, neither can you.
Clifford wanted to continue to
persuade Nathan, but the latter got in before him. "I'm here solely
becaused have been informed by et
Mr. Valeis that there was a matter of national interest that you wish to discuss. If there is all there is that you wish to talk about, then I would suggest we call it a day."
With that, Nathan pretended to get up in preparation to leave.
Clifford hurriedly said, "Please hold up, Chief Military Governor!"
"The matter of marriage can wait. Regarding the collaboration which I have proposed..."
"Haha. I've similarly little interest in
that. You take charge of your Cab and, my own army. We both ought to manage our own affairs and perform our respective duties would consider that to be the best way by which we could combine both our strengths to maximum effect." "As for the other absurd notions, please do not
bring them up again."
Clifford did not look pleased.
He found this Chief Military Governor to be a little too cocky.
Was the opportunity to have a run at being king of the hill not appealing enough for him?
