That seemed to make some sense to Clifford.

He frowned, slightly worried. "The shameless coward. Fancy letting a woman help him salvage his career. But if that were true, it has surely become much harder for us to get at him."

Valois laughed. “Not necessarily so. The Chief Military Governor's only doing it to pacify the cuckold. I'll bet that he could not wait to be rid of Nathan so he could have Penny all to himself."

Clifford's eyes lit up.

He bellowed, "Spook!"

"Awaiting orders!"

"Continue to keep watch on the Headquarters.

See if Penny stays there overnight."

"Understood!"

With that, Spook slithered away and went on to execute his assignment.

Valois said with a smile. "If Penny doesn't leave, then it would be sufficient to prove that our conjecture is correct."

"Right!"

"If you are correct about the Chief Military Governor, then he'll be happy to see someone else take care of Nathan and wouldn't likely stand in our way."

Valois laughed, "Nathan's about to lose both his woman and his life."

The Davier brothers continued chatting for a while more before Valois took his leave.

Inside the corridor, Valois ran into Shae coming from the opposite direction.

"Good evening, Uncle," she said politely.

Valois nodded in acknowledgement. "What are you doing up this late, my good niece?"

Shae's eyes lowered in sadness. "I've made a fool of myself and upset the Chief Military Governor. I can't get to sleep just playing that over in my head."

She attempted to probe. "I saw you and Spook in quite a hurry to see Uncle Clifford. Is it because you've come into some information?"

"You're a sharp lass. I'll give you that."

"What did you discover? Come on, Uncle. Tell me!" Shae implored coquettishly.

Valois exhaled before he said in a low voice, "I guess there's no harm. Do keep it to yourself."

"You can trust me on this!"

He spoke in a whisper as he recounted the details of the discussion he engaged in earlier.

Shae was both shocked and outraged. "Nathan pimped out his own wife to the Chief Military Governor in order to turn his own fortunes around?"

"Hush! Not so loud!"

She gnashed her teeth. "Why would the Chief Military Governor prefer a married woman like her over me?"

"Penny must naturally have her

charms if she was able to win him over," he replied plainly. "Watch and learn, though I doubt she would be sharing her methods for ensnaring the Governor."

Valois then yawned. "I'm beat. You should turn in as well. Remember that you must not breath a word about this to anyone. Leave everything to your Uncle Clifford. He

knows what must be done.

Shae casually grunted in acknowledgement, even though her thoughts were already miles away.

She had only one thing on her mind: To make Penny reveal everything she knew about how to impress the Chief Military Governor. With that knowledge in hand, there was no saying for certain whether she, too, could win the man over.

There and then, a cold glint flashed across her eyes. It was decided that that was to be the course of action which she must pursue.

At the Headquarters of the Chief Military Governor.

Penny was being shown around in the study room.

"This office looks really grand. What exactly do you do here anyway?" she asked.

"You could consider me the aide to the Chief Military Governor. Basically, I've got my nose in everything that is being done in the Headquarters,” he replied with a smile.

"That's not too bad. All things considered, I'd say my husband's rather successful," she laughed coquettishly.

Nathan was amused inside: / wonder how you would react if I told you that I was the Chief Military Governor himself?
