Salute To The General -
Chapter 2170
Chapter 2170
Simone flashed an ambiguous smile. "Nathan Cross is here."
Nathan was smiling as he greeted the people present.
"Mr. Cross, may I have this dance with you?" Catherine approached him and asked.
Instinctively, Nathan was going to reject her, but she added, "I heard you're from a wealthy family in Eurasia, so you're very well educated on the social etiquettes of nobility. Mr. Cross, you know how ungentlemanly it is to refuse a lady's invitation to a dance, no doubt. Surely, you won't do me the dishonor?"
What she said left him no choice but to accept her invitation.
Hence, Catherine smiled and took his hand as they walked onto the dance floor.
Meanwhile, Reno was on the side, looking at them furiously as he gritted his teeth. "Damn it!"
“General Reno, Ms. Catherine doesn't seem to be fond of you." Nakajima looked sympathetically at him. "Looks like she's more interested in Nathan Cross."
"I'll definitely teach that man a lesson and make that woman fall for me," Reno responded with rage in his eyes.
"Be patient. Tonight, I'll make your wish come true." Simone grinned.
"The things that I talked to you two about, how's the preparation going along?"
"All done,” Nakajima answered.
Reno smirked. "I've already sent some men to the Eurasia fleet to cause some trouble. Soon, there will be a spectacle to behold."
On the dance floor, the lighting and music set a classy ambiance.
At the moment, Nathan and Catherine were ballroom dancing.
She looked at the handsome face right in front of her, thinking that Nathan looked more attractive the more she looked at him. With the eagerness of someone from the west, Catherine's face flushed as she asked, "Mr. Cross, it's a beautiful night with good music and wine."
She took a brief pause. "People say love blooms from a romantic atmosphere like this. May I know, Mr. Cross, whether I've swayed your heart, even for a little?"
Catherine had never been in a relationship ever since she was a small girl. Even though hordes of men had pursued her, she rejected all of them. At that moment, it was the first time Catherine's heart raced because of a man, and she took the initiative to express her affection towards a man.
When she finished, her face was bright red. Even her neck was turning red, making her look rather charming.
Any man would be head over heels for her at this point.
Alas, the man in front of her was Nathan Cross.
"The ambiance tonight is indeed pleasant and cozy, but you are only a friend to me, Duchess. I do not feel anything else."
The second he finished his sentence, Catherine could not hold in her disappointment.
"Why?" She asked. "Am I not beautiful enough? Or do you think my status does not match up to yours?"
Nathan was calm when confronted
calm
with those questions. "Because I already have a lover, my wife who adore and vowed to spend the rest of my life with. She fills my heart, and there's no room for another woman."
Catherine was rendered speechless why what she just heard.
People from the west were very open and passionate about relationships. To them, getting
married did not necessarily bind aet
couple together, nor did it demand loyalty from each other. This was especially true among noblemen. Divorces or affairs were far too common within their society.
Thus, Catherine would have never thought that
Nathan would love his wife so dearly.
With that, she felt ashamed for attempting to express her feelings. It also affirmed her belief that Nathan was a unique man and that it was a pity that she did not meet him any sooner.
"Your wife," she spoke softly. "She must be the luckiest woman in the world. I envy her."
When his wife was mentioned, Nathan's gaze turned gentle. He smiled and said, "She is the warmest and kindest woman in the world. I'm the lucky one for meeting her during my lifetime."
While the two were talking, Colin hurried onto the dance floor with an anxious expression.
“General, we have an issue," Colin said quietly when he reached Nathan's side.
Hearing that, Nathan raised an eyebrow. "What happened?"
"There seems to be some conflict between our men and the soldiers from Ferropene. Things are escalating out of control. I think you need to come and handle it quickly, Sir Colin reported.
"Trouble never stops coming our way, it seems. Let's go and take a look." Nathan's expression darkened after hearing the news.
As soon as Nathan finished, he turned towards Catherine and excused himself before quickly leaving with Colin and the Elite Eight.
