Salute To The General -
Chapter 2291
Both Merwyn and Oliver had no choice but to look up.
Nathan said coldly, "Merwyn, I'm going to ask you one last time. What exactly did Kristoff and Bowen bribe you with?"
Merwyn began perspiring profusely, gritted his teeth, and dared not speak.
"I am now giving you a chance to come clean. If you decide otherwise, then don't blame me."
He knew Nathan was the Chief Military Governor, so he knew he was doomed. There was no way he was going to get away with it this time around.
Shaking uncontrollably in fear, he begged for mercy. "Chief Military Governor, I have been blinded this time and made a grave mistake. I'm willing to come clean. Please have mercy on me!"
Merwyn then went ahead to divulge everything in detail from when Novah Pharmaceutical Company and the Camden family had approached him to the bribes that he was given. He even revealed how much he had given Oliver for his share and the process in which he had released
Kristoff and Bowen.
After Merwyn was done with his confessions, he burst into tears and was remorseful.
Likewise, Oliver was clambering on the ground and shaking in fear. He also knew he was a goner.
After Nathan heard everything, he said, "Our country has spent lots of effort to train both of you. Your achievements to date are the pride of your respective families. It's a pity that you abused your powers, accepted briberies, and turned out to be the black sheep. As the Chief Military Governor, I am only in charge of the military affairs and not the political aspects. Therefore, I will not deal with either of you. The two of you shall turn yourselves in. Later on, I will inform the President, and he will have the final say in how you should be dealt with."
Everyone was aware that President Woods had appointed the Chief Military Governor. Moreover, the president had placed immense trust in the governor and left him in charge of all military affairs.
Once the Chief Military Governor reported this matter to President Woods, there was no way the president would let Merwyn and
Oliver off.
All of them present knew that it was over for the two men.
Both men lost control of their emotions and started wailing. Unfortunately, their tears were futile. It was too late for regrets. Merwyn and Oliver walked away in a depressed state.
Only Vernon, his secretary, Nathan and Colin were left in the office.
Nathan held up his teacup and drank the rest of it. He then smiled at
Vernon. "Mr. Mayor, I'm sorry to take up your time today."
Vernon panicked and asked, "What do you mean, Sir? It's my honor to have a drink with you!"
Nathan laughed. "I have a presumptuous request."
"Please tell me what you require!"
"Few are aware of my new appointment as the Chief Military Governor. That includes the President, the Great Cabinet, respective commanders-in-chief, and a handful of others. It is still a secret, and I have no wish to announce it to the world to prevent any disruption to my family. Hence, I have to ask you and your secretary to keep this confidential."
When Vernon heard that, he immediately responded, "Please rest assured, Chief Military Governor. Even if someone threatens us with our lives, we won't disclose your secret."
"There's no need for that. If that really happens, you may tell."
Seeing that it was getting late, Nathan invited Vernon for a meal.
The mayor was beyond thrilled, but he was aware of the differences in their statuses. As such, he turned down the invitation by using his work as an excuse.
Nathan said, "Fine. You seem like a good man. One of these days, we will have a drink together."
Vernon knew he had given a good impression when he spoke up for the governor and stopped Merwyn from filing a complaint against him.
He was ecstatic to be appreciated by the Chief Military Governor. "I'm flattered, Chief Military Governor. When the time is right, I will treat you to a round of drinks."
