Salute To The General
Chapter 3382 Repeated Probing

Alas, Nathan appeared so calm and composed, raising his glass of red wine to toast with him with a smile.

Eugene IV drained his glass of red wine in one gulp.

Nathan also raised his glass, but after taking just a sip of the red wine, he furrowed his brow and promptly spat the wine back into the glass.

Eugene IV looked at Nathan. "What's wrong?"

Nathan frowned and said, "There seems to be something off about this wine. It tastes strange as if it's gone bad."

Upon hearing this, Eugene IV's eyes showed a hint of uncertainty. He asked, "Could it be that the wine has gone bad?"

As he spoke, he immediately stopped an attendant passing by and asked her to bring more wine.

Actually, there indeed was something wrong with the alcohol.

It was Eugene IV who had orchestrated the preparations beforehand. Having started to harbor suspicions about Nathan, he instructed the attendant to discreetly add a few drops of fresh blood into one of the glasses of red wine. The crimson essence merged seamlessly with the rich red wine, making it nearly impossible for the naked eye to discern.

Furthermore, the intoxicating aroma of the wine masked any hint of the blood's taste. If Nathan were indeed a vampire, this particular glass of red wine would prove irresistibly sweet to him.

Deep within, vampires possessed an innate longing for their own kind, replaceing solace and pleasure in the taste of blood.

The glass of wine served as a subtle test devised by Eugene IV to probe Nathan's true nature.

If Nathan were to truly relish the taste of this wine, it would signal to Eugene IV that there was something profoundly amiss with Nathan.

Nathan's expression turned into a frown as he spat out the first sip of the red wine. Displeased, he bluntly remarked that the wine had an unusual taste, making it evident that he did not replace it enjoyable. It was clear that Nathan was far from relishing the drink.

Could it be that I'm overthinking things? Is there really no issue with Nathan?

Eugene IV absentmindedly picked up his wine glass again to clink glasses with Nathan.

Right that moment, his bodyguard approached them with the food.

Amidst the spread of delectable food items at the table, ranging from foie gras and caviar to an array of desserts and delicacies, Eugene IV's subordinate made an unexpected choice.

Instead of bringing any of that, he presented two freshly cooked medium-rare steaks.

Eugene IV's eyes lit up when he saw the steaks. This was also one of his tests for Nathan.

With a cheerful smile, he picked up his knife and fork, inviting Nathan to dine with him. "We've been busy all day with the alliance's celebration and didn't really have much for dinner. I guess you must be as hungry as I am, Mr. Cross. Let's have something to eat first to fill our stomachs. After that, we won't stop until we're drunk."

Seizing the initiative, Eugene IV lifted his knife and fork, taking the first decisive cut into the steak before him.

The moment the steak knife sliced through the medium-rare beef, the fresh blood inside immediately seeped out.

The table was instantly filled with a delightful aroma.

Eugene IV gave Nathan a smile, then picked up a piece of beef with his fork and put it in his mouth. He began to eat it deliciously right in front of Nathan.

Then, he smiled at Nathan and gestured for the latter to dig in.

A medium-rare steak was still juicy when it was cut into slices.

To the Adrunians, the consumption of rare, juicy steak was commonplace. However, according to Eugene IV's investigations, Nathan had never been seen publicly indulging in this particular culinary preference before.

If Nathan willingly consumed the steak and found it delectable, it could potentially signify a burgeoning interest in the taste of fresh blood.

However, he was disappointed once again.

Nathan cast a glance at the steak he

was eating, his brows slightly furrowed, and let out a chuckle. "I

suppose still haven't acquired anet

I

taste for the Adrunian diet. This steak doesn't quite suit my palate," he remarked.

With a nod, he turned to Colin, who stood beside him, and instructed, "Why don't you go over there and bring back some pastries for me?"

Colin replied, "Sure!"

Eugene IV was taken aback once again. His two attempts to probe had yielded absolutely nothing.

Could it be that Nathan is very vigilant and has noticed his probing? Or am I simply overthinking things? Nathan hasn't actually become a vampire, so all my previous assumptions have been mistaken.

For a moment, even Eugene IV himself was uncertain.

Nathan and Eugene IV continued

their conversation over drinks,

eli

engaging in a mix of casual talk and subtle probing. Eugene IV sought to uncover any potential flaws or inconsistencies, but to his dismay, he found no discernible faults in Nathan's words or demeanor.

At that moment, the debate among the War Gods, including Wolfric, had come to a resolution.

They had successfully divided the proverbial cake, reaching a consensus that left everyone content.

With a sense of satisfaction and camaraderie, the celebration party hosted by the alliance concluded in a jubilant atmosphere of shared triumph.

In the late hours of the night, Nathan, slightly inebriated and accompanied by Colin and his trusted subordinates, including the vigilant Elite Eight, made their way out of the party. Nathan climbed into a waiting sedan that gradually pulled away.

As Nathan settled into the car, his

intoxicated state swiftly dissipated, and he regained his composure. Sitting upright with a renewed clarity in his eyes, he turned his gaze toward the captivating nocturnal scenery outside the car window. His expression turned pensive as he contemplated the night scene before him.

Colin asked, "Mr. Cross, are you okay?"

Nathan said calmly, "I'm fine, but it seems Pope Eugene has started to suspect me. This place is no longer safe for us to stay for long. Let's prepare to return to Eurasia tomorrow." Colin said, "Got it!"
