Saving His Feral Mate
Chapter 77: He paid him off

Knox POV

It’s been a few weeks since the meeting with the council. I’ve stayed in close contact with elder Brett while they conducted their investigation on Alec and his pack.

He asked for me to meet him and the rest of the council at their office today. He also asked that I bring Vincent, Parker and Preston for some reason. I was hoping they might have some good news for us.

I’ve had a team of warriors watching Cameron’s pack closely. They were instructed to stay out of sight and only gather intelligence. So far they haven’t seen anything suspicious happening on his territory.

“You guys ready?” I asked as I stepped outside the pack house and found Parker, Preston and Vincent chatting next to one of the awaiting SUV’s.

“You know it. Let’s get this over with so we can come back to Sheryl.” Preston replied anxiously and I chuckled. We haven’t seen much of the twins since Sheryl’s been on bedrest. I’m pretty sure the only reason they ever left her side was to use the washroom.

I made sure that Chloe and my mother looked after Sheryl while we were away, but that still wasn’t good enough for the twin. They really didn’t like the idea of leaving their mate alone. I thought I was protective over Chloe, but those guys took it to a whole new level with Sheryl.

We loaded up into one of the SUV’s and a handful of my warriors got into another. I added a few extra warriors to our border patrol incase something happened while we were gone.

Jo and Jag were responsible for the pack while I was away and they had strict orders to contact me if anything happened.

“What do you think they want?” Parker asked, after we had been on the road for a few minutes.

“I’m assuming they have reached a decision regarding Alec and his Pack.” I replied.

“Ya, but why would they need us there?” Preston asked with a frown.

“I’m not sure. Maybe they have an update on Cameron?” I replied.

“That would make sense, maybe our last meeting knocked some sense into them.” Vincent added.

“Let’s hope so.” I replied.

The rest of the drive was silent, we were all pretty anxious to replace out what exactly they wanted. I was definitely worried that it might be something we weren’t going to like. You just never knew with the council.

Once we arrived at their office, I parked out front before we all got out. I instructed the warriors to remain by the vehicles while we went in for the meeting.

Once the receptionist buzzed us in, we took a seat in the waiting room. We didn’t have to wait long before the same middle aged she-wolf as last time came over to get us. She escorted our group down the hall into the meeting room.

The council was already seated at the head table when we entered. The first thing I noticed was that there were only four of them this time, Troy was missing. I wonder what happened to him?

“Gentlemen, have a seat.” Brett instructed and motioned to the table and chairs across from them.

“Thank you.” I replied before we all took our seats.

“We called you here to discuss a few matters. A lot has happened since our last meeting and we’ve been forced to make some serious changes around here.” Brett explained.

“First, you might have noticed that Troy isn’t present in the meeting. While we were investigating Alec, we discovered documents on his laptop that prove he was paying Troy off in exchange for his support.” Brett continued with a disapproving expression on his face. My own eyebrows furrowed together, I knew there was something off about the guy. He was quiet most of the time, but was definitely against Max’s being found innocent from the very beginning.

“Has he been taken into custody?” Vincent gritted out angrily.

“Unfortunately not. He must have expected us to replace something incriminating against him, because he was gone by the time we got back. We’ve been searching for him, but haven’t had any luck yet.” Brett replied with a sigh.

“f**k! What about Alec, is he still in your dungeon?” I asked, my words were laced with irritation. How did they let that Wiesel get away? Who else was paying him off?

“He’s still locked up. I promise you that we’re doing everything in our power to replace Troy. Once we do, he’ll pay for his crimes.” Brett replied.

“We’ve found enough evidence to prove that Alec knew about the mistreatment of his female pack members. We even had a few more victims come forward. His pack is a mess right now and we have temporarily taken it over until we figure out what to do with it. Alec has officially been stripped of his title and will not be seeing the light of day for a long time, if not ever.” Zeus was the one to speak up this time.

“Good, what about Alec’s ranked members and supporters?” I knew it wasn’t only Alec who was evil in that pack, he had to have his share of followers within it.

“Unfortunately, as soon as we started our investigation at least a quarter of his pack disappeared. Mostly warriors and his ranked members. We identified the two men in the video Lilly provided us, they were warriors in his pack. When we went to apprehend them they were already gone.” Colin replied with a heavy sigh.

“Well that’s just f*****g great.” I spat out sarcastically.

“What does any of this have to do with us?” Preston asked curiously.

“We wanted to let you guys know that we’ve decided to help you get your pack back. We don’t have enough evidence to strip Cameron of his title, but we don’t believe he’s fit to be Alpha. If one of you challenges him and wins, we would support you guys taking over the title and pack.” Brett replied.

I looked over and saw the twins having a silent conversation with themselves. It was clear by the expression on their faces that they both wanted to challenge Cameron.

“I’ll do it. I’m the oldest and it’s only been a few weeks since my brother was shot with a silver bullet.” Preston replied and I heard Parker growl in disapproval.

“I’m fine, I should be the one to challenge him since I’m the one he shot.” Parker argued.

“No, your brother’s right. The eldest, even if it’s only by a few minutes, should be the one to challenge him.” Zeus replied and I heard Parker curse under his breath. He certainly wasn’t happy with the decision and I couldn’t blame him. If I was being completely honest, I was jealous. I wanted to kill Cameron myself and I’m pretty sure Vincent was thinking the same thing my the look on his face.

“Why am I here?” Vincent asked, the annoyance was clear in his tone.

“We have a proposition for you. You were always highly respected when you were the Alpha of your pack. Now that Troy’s no longer part of the council, we would like to offer you a spot. The council could benefit from a fresh set of eyes and a different outlook on things.” Brett replied in a hopeful tone.

Vincent was quiet for a few minutes, clearly thinking it over.

“I’ll need time to think about it. I must warn you though, I’m not one to backdown when I don’t agree with something.” Vincent said.

“We understand and that’s why we want you on our team. We need people that aren’t afraid to voice their opinions.” Zeus replied and Vincent nodded.

“I’ll get back to you when I’ve decided.” Vincent said.

“Now, what about Cameron. When can the twins challenge him?” I asked.

“Whenever they want. I would be prepared for a fight though, Cameron isn’t going to be happy about it.” Brett replied.

“He’s a coward, I’d be willing to bet money on him not accepting the challenge.” I said honestly.

“Exactly, so when Preston does challenge him, make sure you’re ready for a fight.” Zeus replied.

“Victor has already agreed that his pack will be fighting with us.” Vincent stated.

“I think we should make a move soon, invade their territory while they aren’t expecting it. I’ll challenge Cameron and if he refuses, we fight and take the pack by force.” Preston added.

“I think that’s a good plan. I wouldn’t wait too long to act. Now that Troy’s out there, Cameron probably knows everything that happened and might start getting antsy.” Colin replied and what he said was true. Cameron was a bit of a ticking time bomb. If he felt threatened he might lash out unexpectedly.

“Give us two days to get our troops together. Once that’s in place we’re good to go.” I replied and the elders nodded.

“I’ll talk to Victor and have him send his warriors over in preparation for the fight.” Vincent added.

“Thank you.” I replied.

“Was that everything?” I asked. It was time for us to get back to our territory so we could start planning.

“Yes Alpha Knox, that’s all.” Brett replied with a nod.

“Good, we’ll be in touch.” I said as I stood from my chair.

Parker, Preston and Vincent followed my lead and we all left the room. Once we were outside and in the vehicle, I finally spoke up.

“What are you guys thinking?” I asked curiously.

“There’s a few things we need to be cautious about. Since Troy is missing we have to assume that Cameron already knows what’s going on. He might try to attack us first so we need to be prepared. Second, a quarter of Alec’s pack members went missing. Who knows what they might be up to.” Vincent replied with a frown.

“Ya, I don’t have a good feeling about Alec’s missing warriors. They could be anywhere.” I replied with a sigh.

“What if they’re already on Cameron’s territory. If they are we might be in trouble.” Parker added.

“They aren’t. I have some of my men keeping an eye on his pack. If that many warriors had shown up, I would have heard about it.” I replied.

“That’s good. Then hopefully they ran away to avoid apprehension and we never hear from them again.” Preston said.

“Doubt it. If they’re anything like Alec, they won’t give up that easily. We’ll double our patrol numbers for now just incase.” I replied and they all nodded.

“May I make a suggestion?” Vincent asked, after a few minutes of silence.

“Of course.” I replied with a curious frown.

“I know you were planning on waiting till after this war to officially make Chloe your Luna. But I think you should hold the ceremony immediately.” Vincent stated and I glanced over at him with a confused frown. What does the ceremony have anything to do with this war? Before I could ask, he answered my silent question.

“Now that your father and brother are dead, there’s no one to run your pack if something was to happen to you. I’m not saying I think something bad will happen, but you should still be prepared. At least if Chloe is made the official Luna, the pack still has a leader if things don’t go as planned.” Vincent explained and I hadn’t even thought about it like that. We were planning on waiting till everything settled down, so that we could celebrate properly. But what Vincent said made complete sense. If anything happened to me, the pack shouldn’t be left without a leader.

“Good point. We will have the ceremony immediately and hold off on the celebration till after things settle down.” I replied and he nodded.

The rest of the drive was silent, everyone appeared deep in thought. Todays meeting was huge. It seemed like the council had finally come to their senses.

Once we got back at the pack house, I found Jo, Jag and Chloe waiting for us out front.

“Hey, how did it go?” Chloe asked as I walked up to her.

“Good, I think.” I replied, before picking her up in my arms and squeezing her tightly. She laughed at the action.

“You think?” She questioned.

“Ya, let’s move to my office and I’ll tell you guys everything.” I suggested and they nodded.

We headed for my office and once inside, I took a seat at my desk. Chloe came over and sat on my lap, while the twins sat across from me and the three others sat on the couch.

I told them everything that was discussed with the council and they all looked shocked by the news.

“I knew that piece of s**t was crooked.” Jo gritted out when I told them about Troy.

Chloe didn’t seem happy when I explained the plan regarding Cameron and how I wanted to make her the official Luna before we made a move.

“I’m coming with you. If anyone deserves to kill Cameron, it’s me.” She argued.

“Chloe, I need you to take care of our pack while I’m away. They need a leader, someone to reassure them that everything’s going to be ok. We can’t both go. Plus, if you’re there I won’t be able to focus on anything but you.” I explained and she sighed in frustration.

“I hate this.” She huffed.

“If Cameron accepts the challenge, there won’t even be a fight.” Preston added.

“Ya, that’s definitely the best case scenario.” I replied.

“Tomorrow night we will hold your Luna ceremony and the following night we will invade Cameron’s territory.” I stated and motion to Chloe when I brought up the ceremony. She still seemed skeptical but she didn’t argue with me.

Hopefully this all goes as planned and we can finally move on with our lives once Cameron was out of the picture.
