Self Chapter 40
Chapter 40
“If you’re up for it, it’s a done deal,” Wade said with a reassuring smile.
*The Academy of Sciences will get a new research team next October, even grad students can throw their
hats in the ring.
“The project is all about gene sequencing. Nail your grad school exams this year, and you’ll be set to apply once you’re in.”
The team was a who’s who of the bio world, with some top–notch scholars calling the shots. They obtained the green light the previous year, and while it was still hush–hush outside, word was definitely out at Bellmere University.
For Yara, it was a golden ticket.
“If you’re keen, take this and give it a good look,” he said, sliding a USB drive across the table to her. “It’s got all the details on the experiment.”
Yara’s eyes sparkled, a ripple of excitement passing through them. “Thanks, I give it some serious thought.”
The clock struck ten–time for Yara to head home.
Wade walked her to the door, playing the gentleman.
“No need for the escort. I’m just across the hall.” Yara chuckled.
Wade caught a glimpse of her bandaged finger and said, “Don’t keep that bandage on too long. Clean it with some iodine and let it breathe.”
Yara instinctively curled her finger, a small smile on her face. “Got it, thanks.”
Wade nodded and picked up a small, pink plant. “This is for you.”
Yara’s eyes widened in delight at the chubby little plant, its leaves a gradient from green to adorable pink
“This little guy’s really for me?”
“Yep, I spotted it all alone in a flower shop a few days back and thought it needed a home. It’s a thank–you. for that fish dinner you treated me to.”
Yara’s smile grew. “Well, I’m taking you up on this one. We’re friends–no need for thank–yous. Next time, let’s enjoy the meal, no strings attached.”
Her eyes fluttered open, sparkling with a clarity that seemed to hold twinkling stars within their depths.
“Alright.” Wade felt a gentle tickle in his heart, like the brush of a feather.
The hospital room buzzed with activity early in the morning as Michael and Zachary, among a few others, arrived to check on their friend.
Michael carried a thermos with an air of importance. Yale, never say I don’t look out for you. Check out what I’ve brought–mushroom soup!
“I know your stomach’s been acting up, so you need something light. I had my chef wake up early to make this special.
“It might look like a tiny serving, but it’s packed with nutrients. Eat up, and you’ll be jumping around in no
time!”
Zachary eyed the aromatic, golden mushroom soup, then glanced at Michael’s grin, his mouth twitching

involuntarily.
Was that guy there to deliver comfort food or cause a scene?
The others might not be aware, but they knew the score–Yale was not a fan of soup, except for the stomach–friendly kind Yara used to make. Any other kind was practically an eyesore to him.
Predictably, Yale took a reluctant sip, scrunched his face, and tossed the spoon aside. “It tastes weird! Where did you replace this chef? Can’t even make a decent soup.”
Michael arched an eyebrow. “Man, you’re too fussy. It tastes fine to me.”
Yale kept a straight face. “You like it so much, you eat
Michael let out a huff. “I don’t think the soup’s the problem. It’s the chef who’s off. My chef’s a big dude, no match for a dainty girlfriend’s lovingly simmered soup. Oh, my bad, I meant ex–girlfriend…”
Zachary coughed loudly, desperately trying to cut him off.
It was too late.
Yale shouted, “Out!”
Michael grabbed the thermos with determination. “Fine, let’s hit the road! With an attitude that stinks like that, it’s no shocker that Yara’s not jumping at the chance to return. Heck, I wouldn’t come back either!”
Then, he bolted out of the room.
Zachary ran after him, shouting, “You know he’s feeling lousy, and you just had to rub salt in the wound, didn’t you? Real smooth, Michael!”
Michael smirked. “You know that Yara’s his Achilles‘ heel, and yet he’s still playing the tough guy. If he misses her and wants her to check on him, why doesn’t he just say it? Always trying to act all indestructible!”
Zachary just stared at him, speechless.
Then Michael nudged him. “Hey, Zachary, you need my help?”
