Axel POV

can I join?"

"Hey, you," I smile brightly as I walk towards Liana and Connor. She laid a blanket on the grass in the backyard and now she is blowing bubbles as Connor tries catching it. But he just started walking and is falling more often than catching a bubble. "This looks fun, "That better be a statement and not a question," she grins and hands me a bottle of bubbles. "You're home early."

"Adele thinks she made a breakthrough," my words are soft as I tell her about the discovery while I blow bubbles. "We're waiting on more information before we act."

"I also told Luther to wait with this sister thing until after the wedding," she says softly.

"Why?" I frown. "Do you think it was a mistake looking for her?"

"No," she shakes her head. "It's important to Luther, but it was an emotional day. I don't want it to consume him. Not when he promised Adele their dream wedding." "Yes, because every little boy dreams about his wedding day," I tease her.

"Shame on you," she laughs and playfully shoves me against the shoulder. "I think it's admirable what he's doing for her."

Connor sees what she is doing and immediately decides he must join. Clumsily he climbs onto me and uses all his strength to push me to the ground. Quickly it becomes a wrestling game

"You win! You win!" I exclaim, laying on my back with Connor on top of me. Connor laughs cheerfully as he cups my cheeks and squashes my face.

"You're both covered in bubbles and sticky," Liana laughs.

"You heard your mother," I get onto my feet with Connor in my arms. "It's bath time, or you and I are in trouble."

"Not what I said, but okay," she rolls her eyes and stands up.

"I was thinking," I take her hand as we walk. "Would you like to go on a date tonight? I'm sure I can convince Mother to look after Connor."

"Yes, please," she says eagerly and clings to my arm. "And we both know Mother needs no convincing to take him."

"I know," I chuckle. "It's getting him back, which would be the problem."

Liana POV

"So, where are we going?" I ask as we get into the car.

"You're much too pregnant for a wild night out," Axel grins.

"Or too domesticated."

"Are you calling me boring?" I squint my eyes at him.

"No," he leans over and kisses me. "I'm saying you're unfit for wine pairing or clubbing."

"Wine pairing would've been nice," I sigh dreamily.

"Tonight, you'll have to settle for an open-air theatre near the city," he laughs.

"I can live with that," I place my hand on his thigh and revel in the feeling of his muscles moving under my hand as he drives. "Thank you."

"Anything for you, my love," he smiles at me as we leave our borders.

"It's an eerily dark night," I mumble as I stare out of the window into the darkness. "No moon or stars. I cannot even see the bridge which is supposed to be in sight by now." "The universe is on my side," Axel smirks. "I need a reason to keep you close."

"You don't need a reason," I laugh. "I'll happily cling to you."

My cell phone starts ringing before he can respond, and I reach for it.

"It's Luther," I read the name. "Must be wedding... dammit."

"What's wrong?" Axel asks concerned.

"I dropped my phone," I reply frustrated and try to get hold of it. But it slipped in between the seats, and I could only get my fingers in. "Almost..... urgh! It slipped to the back."

"Leave it," Axel says firmly when I undo my seatbelt and turn around in my seat to reach to the back. "You can call him from my phone."

"It's okay," I grunt as I worm between the seats. "I almost..."

I am cut off by a deafening thud followed by screeching tires and the sound of shattering glass and crushing metal.

I cannot help to scream when I am mercilessly tossed into the backseats, and the car swerves off the road.

Desperately, I cling to the seats and steal myself until the car stops. It is dark and silent, and I loosen my grip on the seats.

"Axel, are you okay?" I shout as I sit up, but he does not respond.

Frantically, I search for the roof light and turn it on. Time stops turning and my blood freezes when I look at the horror in front of me. Always visit Narugi.com for more novels. An unknown man has crushed through the windscreen. His upper body is on my seat and his feet are on Axel.

"Oh, goddess, Axel!" I shout as life returns to me. He is covered in blood and glass.

"No, no, no," I reach for his neck to feel his pulse.

"Oh, thank you," I sob when I feel his heartbeat underneath fingers.

I take deep breaths to fight the hysteria as tears stream down my face while I search for my phone. But it is dark, and it is not where I last saw it. I scream out of fright when it starts ringing again and eagerly, I follow the sound and sob loudly when I see the screen's light.

"Luther," I shout into the phone when I finally get it from under the seat. "Send help, please. We had an accident at the bridge before the city. Send an ambulance, its... it's Axel. He doesn't look good."

"Don't disconnect the call," Luther says urgently. "Stay on the line with me until we get there."

"No," I argue. "Call the ambulance."

"Adele has already done it," Luther's voice is calm and soothing. "You were on speaker when I called."

"O... okay," I sniff and push my fingers through my hair.

"Are you hurt?" He asks.

"No," I put the phone on speaker and put it next to me as I reach for Axel's pulse again. "I was in the back of the car - sort of. I was tossed around a little and I think I'm in shock, but that's it. Axel is still alive, but I don't know for how long. His pulse is weak."

I reach over to the passenger seat and place my fingers against the stranger's neck, but he is dead. A shiver rips through me and I pull my hand away. I lean forward and turn on the car's hazard lights.

"Can you tell me what happened?" He asks.

"I don't know," I get out and walk around the car. I look at the headlights, bumper and bonnet. "I think we hit someone, but the front of the car is unscathed. A man burst through our windshield and he's dead."

I open Axel's door and pieces of glass fall at my feet.

"What's happening?" Luther asks urgently.

"I'm trying to help Axel," I turn on my cell phone's light and shine on Axel's face. A sob rips through me and my bottom lip starts quivering. His beautiful face is full of cuts. I move the light down, but I cannot see much besides the stranger's feet and glass. "I cannot replace it," I say as I gently touch Axel's chest and abdomen.

"What are you looking for?" Luther sounds impatient.

"Axel's injury," I scoff as I reach underneath the man's feet."

He's unconscious with a weak pulse but I cannot see the injury causing it. There are no deep lacerations he's bleeding from. It must be internal."

"Or he had a blow to his head," Luther suggests.

"How long until you're here?" I grunt.

"Ten minutes or less," Luther replies.

"Okay," I exhale deeply and lay my fingers against Axel's neck. I close my eyes in relief when I feel his pulse.

"Axel," I whisper and softly touch his face. "Please wake up.

"We're almost there, Liana," Luther comforts me. "Hold on."

"Okay," my voice is thin and weak as I give in to the fear and devastation.

"Look down the road," Luther orders. "Can you see our headlights?"

Reluctantly, I obey. I know he is only trying to keep me calm and distracted but I would much rather curl onto Axel's lap.

"Can you see us?" Luther asks again.

"Y... yes," I mutter when I see the oncoming lights.

"Yes!" I shout when I can also see red lights blinking. "And the ambulance. I can see you."

I disconnect the call and cry loudly as relief rushes through me.

"You're going to be okay," I clear my throat and wipe the tears as I take Axel's hand. "Help is here. It's going to be fine."

Adele and Luther stop next to me with screeching tires and blinking hazards, followed by the ambulance.

"Come on," Adele pulls me away. "Let the paramedics work, and you also need to be checked out."

"I'm fine," I shake my head.

"No, you're not," Adele says softly and touches my forehead. "You're bleeding."
