The first thing I do when I return to the mansion is replace Logan and Margaret. We quickly arrange a meeting in the garden for the pack and the vampires to reveal Charlie as Emily’s murderer. The pack and the vampires vote on having him executed for his crime. He dies the same night.

A few days later, we hold a beautiful funeral for Emily. It’s gorgeous, and many pack members cry. It makes me smile when I see that some of them have made friends with the vampires. I see a girl from the pack hug a vampire, who I’m assuming must be her mate.

How curious.

I’m on cloud nine after discovering the pack is getting along with the vampires and decide

to announce to the pack that Eric has been resurrected as a hybrid.

I don’t expect the pack to understand. I honestly expected them to be horrified, but most

pack members seem happy that he is back, probably because none of us mention that he

is bloodthirsty from time to time. Eric’s father, however, doesn’t look happy, and I make a

mental note to replace out what agenda he has. I have a bad feeling about him.

But I don’t have time to think about him now. I just want to be with my mates, and at the moment, I’m trying to introduce Eric back into his old life. He is standing in our bedroom right now, squinting at the window.

“Was it always so bright in here?” he asks and shields his eyes from the bright sun.

“It was, but I bought these for you,” I hand him the shades I bought. He takes them but looks more amused than grateful. There is a smirk on his lips.

“You bought shades for a vampire?” I have no idea why he replaces that so funny. He is laughing, and I frown a little, unsure if the gift is appreciated or not.

“You don’t have to wear them,” I mutter.

“I want to,” he smiles and pats my head. I feel like a child when he does it because he is so

much taller than me. I pout, and his lips twitch – I just know he has read my mind.

I sigh heavily. “Did you read my mind?”

“I didn’t try this time; it just happened. I’m trying to get better at not reading your mind since I know you value your privacy, but sometimes I can’t help it.”

I decide to let that one slip and instead ask the question that is weighing on my mind. “So then you know why I’m confused about you not liking the shades?”

He breathes a laugh. “I like them, Princess. I do. I’m just surprised at how much thought you have put into this. Not only have you filled an entire fridge with blood for me, but now you’ve bought me shades? Call me a wimp, but I’m happy.”

“You are?”

“Of course!” he beams at me. “You’ve done so much for me: you have ensured this bedroom is cooler than the other ones and that the curtains let no sunlight through when they are closed. There is a coffin for me to sleep in – not that I will need it, but I like the Dracula feeling to it.”

I can physically feel my face heat up. “Margaret lied when she told me vampires feel the most comfortable sleeping in a coffin, didn’t she?”

Eric can’t help but chuckle. “Oh yes, absolutely! I have no desire to sleep in a coffin, but it was hilarious to hear how much work you put into designing my new room. You’re too cute!”

I frown when Eric bends down to kiss my cheek. He chuckles at the face I’m pulling, and I stare down at the ground, all mopey. I really do feel like a child around him….

Eric sighs and runs a hand through my hair. It tickles, and my heart flutters when his hands run down to cup my cheeks, forcing me to look at him.

“You’re not a child, Five. You’re tiny, yes, but you’re my mate,” he grimaces. “Just sucks that I have to share you with my brother, of all people.

Now it’s my turn to grimace. “Would you just stop fighting with Logan already? I’m sick and tired of you two being enemies when you used to be best friends. It’s also weird that you have a schedule on whose bed I’m sleeping in. You’re seriously treating me like a child who has two divorced parents with shared custody!”

Eric laughs out loud. “That’s one way of putting it.”

I glare at him. “Don’t agree with me on this! It just means that things have gone too far.”

Eric won’t look at me, but when I cross my arms over my chest, he flashes a half–grin.

“Maybe…”

I raise an eyebrow at him, waiting for him to elaborate. When he doesn’t, I let out a

frustrated huff. “What do you mean by saying maybe? Do you have a plan or not?”

Eric finally turns to look at me. “I’m not the one who should apologize; he is.”

I massage my eyelids with my digits. My first instinct was to growl in frustration, but I miraculously fought that off. Now, I’m standing here willing to listen. “Okay…why?”

“Uh, because he abandoned me as soon as you came into the picture? Don’t get me

wrong. You’re our mate, and you’re important, but he never visited me on his own when I

was in that basement!”

“Because he was afraid of you!” I exclaim. “You’re a hybrid now, Eric! It frightened your brother!”

“But he is my brother! He should have known I was still the same person!”

I can’t disagree with that and instead slump my shoulders. I have no idea how to save the brother’s relationship, but something needs to be done. We can’t keep living like this, especially since none of them have marked me, and it needs to be when we are all together – something which will never happen if they keep being enemies.

“Okay, okay,” I say. “How about we go on a little trip together? Leave the pack for a few days and just focus on each other. How does that sound?“
