Millie held her phone tightly. She had confirmed her guess–Winston panicked when she wentmissing at night. So, he must have caught feelings for her.
He suddenly asked, “Will the hospital discharge you tomorrow?”
She turned off the phone. At the same time, he was trying to blow dry his hair.
Nodding, she replied, “Yeah.”
“Simon doesn’t have to pick you up. I’ll send you home. Then, he started to dry his hair.
Curled up under the blanket, she muttered, “It’s fine, Mr. Greer. I don’t want to cause you trouble.”
“Hah.” He chuckled and ran his hand over his hair before unplugging the hairdryer.
Tossing it into the closet, he turned to her. “What you need to do is listen to me if you don’t want togive me trouble.”
Millie was
tomorrow.”
speechless at his stubbornness. She changed the topic
“Got it,” he replied glumly and sat on the couch,
“My ID card will be ready the day after
She wistfully thought, “He’s never been this nice to me in our three years of marriage. What’s thepoint of playing a good husband on the eve of our divorce?”
She retreated to her bed. To her surprise, she felt no fear deep into the night. Their even breathingechoed in the room at 2 am; none of them could fall asleep.
Laying on her side, Millie managed to make out his side profile from the bedside lamp. Shewhispered, Winston.”
He opened his eyes but said nothing.
“Aren’t you scared that I would keep pestering you and refusing to divorce?” Her soft voice soundedmore. lonely in the deep of the night.
Winston fell silent. Finally, he declared, “Millie, I need to marry Joanna.”
She huddled under the covers. He added, “She’s sacrificed too much for me.”
“How about me?” she asked in a shaky voice. “Haven’t sacrificed enough for you?”
Millle nearly lost her life for him. She could’ve enjoyed a life of luxury as a Caldwell, but she gave itall up to be his maid, only to suffer three years of paper marriage.
How about her? Did she deserve to be dumped? She gave him all her love, and she didn’t deserveto be
let down.
“Millie, Joanna’s different from you,” Winston argued in a gloomy voice.
How could he dump Joanna, who risked her life to save him?
Millie stubbornly drilled down. “And how is she different?”
He couldn’t muster an answer. She insisted, “How am I different from Joanna?”

Growing impatient in the face of the barrage of questions, Winston snapped, “Get off her back. Shedidn’t do anything wrong.”
Millie’s heart sank.
How far did Joanna have to go for Winston to admit that she was at fault?
“Winston Greer, Joanna will always come first, right?” Hanging her head, she questioned, “So, whydid you hurry to the hospital looking worried?”
He was taken aback by the question. She flashed him a bitter smile. “Is this part of your act? Forwho- your mom or your grandma?”
He was overcome by frustration. He never needed to put on any act in front of Gloria or Selma.Given how smart Millie was, she must have sensed the real reason behind his presence today.
Winston rose from the couch without warning and grabbed his jacket. He rasped, “If you think Ishouldn’t be here at this hour, I will leave.”
Getting emotional, she felt annoyed at the sight of him. She growled at him, “Fine! Leave, rightnow!”
Did she beg him to visit her? No, she didn’t!
Winston frowned at Millie with mixed feelings and clutched his shirt nervously.
“Go!” She pointed at the door as her emotions ran high. It was about time she put an end to herrelationship with him. Their marriage had reached an end anyway. 27
Once he stepped out of this room, it would mark the end of their relationship, albeit in a rather cru
manner.
“Millie…”
