Chapter 239

Millie was having dinner when she suddenly received a call from Selma.

“Mills, I’ll be attending an afternoon tea hosted by an old friend tomorrow. Would you like to comealong?” Selma’s gentle voice made it hard for Millie to decline.

Seeing that she was on the phone, Terrence asked, “Who is it?”

Millie glanced at her father before replying, “Grandma, have something on tomorrow. I might not beable

to make it.”

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. A few seconds later, Selma let out a sigh. “It’sokay then.”

Millie lowered her gaze and softly suggested, “Grandma, I really have matters to attend to at thehospital. Why don’t you give me the address and tell me the time? I’ll head over once I’m done. How does that sound?”

“No, it’s okay. It’s good that you’re keeping yourself busy.”

With that, Selma hung up.

Millie stared at the phone for a while. In the end, she sighed and thought, “Forget it. I shoulddecline. It’s about time Grandma needs to accept the fact that I’m no longer the Greer family’sgranddaughter–in–law

When she returned to the dining table, Thomas cut a small piece of meat for her.

“Was that Mrs. Greer Senior again?”

Right after Millie nodded in response, she heard Thomas sigh. “Putting Winston aside, the otherGreer family members treat Millie well.”

Terrence scoffed and said seriously, “That’s because Millie has done her part. In this society, peopledon’t treat others well for no reason.”

Millie continued eating, her heart sinking as she listened to their conversation.

Suddenly, Thomas set down his wine glass and remarked, “Speaking of society, I heard there’s atea party happening in Yerwick tomorrow afternoon. It seems like many wealthy ladies will attend.”

Millie took a bite of her meat and looked up at Thomas

“I heard about that as well. It seems to be quite the event. It’s hosted by Mrs. Zimmerman from theRed Cross, so everyone has to show her some respect,” Terrence responded in a low voice as hesipped his drink.

Millie recalled Selma’s invitation to an afternoon tea earlier. Could this be the same event? Givenhow much Selma valued her reputation, Millie was certain she would attend such a significantgathering.

Selma was wonderful in many ways, but she placed too much importance on her reputation. Shecould not stand any kind of public humiliation.

Millie remembered when someone had spoken ill of the Greers in Selma’s presence, and she flewinto a

rage.

She could reprimand and criticize the Greer family members, yet she’d never allow an outsider todo so.

Regardless, Millie believed this had a lot to do with Selma’s social status.

“Are you two going?” Millie suddenly asked Terrence.

Terrence and Thomas exchanged a glance before bursting into laughter.

“Did you zone out just now?” Terrence

Countered.

“No.” Millie shook her head and continued eating her meat.

“Since it’s a tea party, it’s obviously a women’s world. Why would we even go?” Terrence tappedMillie’s head. He couldn’t help but think she was absent–minded.

Millie paused for a moment, feeling somewhat distracted. “Mom, are you going then?” Sheimmediately turned to look at Julia.

Julia shook her head. “I’m busy. How about you go in my place?”

“No way, I’m not going. Places with too many women are the most irritating.” Millie sighed.

Everyone chattered away, yet no one knew what to say about her.

Julia chuckled lightly, ruffled Millie’s hair, and said, “You’ll have plenty of social gatherings to attendin the future. You’ll get the hang of it soon.”

The tea party for Yerwick’s affluent ladies was held on the 33rd floor of Pinnacle Hotel.

Numerous media gathered at the hotel entrance, hoping to secure firsthand news coverage.Walking down the red carpet were several well–known socialites from the community.

Suddenly, a black Rolls–Royce pulled up in front of the hotel. Before long, someone hurried ovewelcome them.

“Mrs. Greer Senior has arrived!”

The car door opened, and all the reporters aimed their cameras in that direction.

Selma wore a dark green dress, accessorized with a pearl necklace, and clutched a plain handbag. As she stepped out of the vehicle, her calm gaze swept across her surroundings.
