Chapter 21 continuation 2
Now," Mark said in my ear. "I don't ever want to hear you talk like that again Megan, you got that?"
"Okay, little brother, I'm sorry I upset you."
Mark pulled away and shrugged.
"It's okay Meg, but never say I don't care about you."
"Your right Mark I'm sorry I didn't mean it."
I put my head down feeling bad again, I hadn't meant to hurt his feelings. Why was I so selfish lately?
"Good." Mark said. "Because you know it's not true and I do have to leave Meg, and take care of something."
"I know." I muttered. "The surprise," I rolled my eyes as I said it.
"Yeah well know what sis, the surprise I have is because I care about us."
That last remark caught my attention.
"Us?" I whispered.
Mark nodded.
"Yes us. But I need tonight sis. Tell you what; why don't you stay in my bed and I promise I'll be home by three and I'll skip working out tomorrow so we can stay in bed awhile, how's that?"
I shook my head.
"Mom checks on me sometimes, I can't stay here."
"Sure you can. I'll tell her on my way out that I checked on you and you were out like a light. You go back to sleep and I'll slip right in next to you. I'll be there in the morning okay?"
I nodded.
"Guess it has to be." I whispered. I looked up at him and shrugged. "Sorry I'm such a baby, I'm just... I'm just having a tough time Mark, that's all."
"I know sis. I know." He kissed me lightly on the lips then smiled at me.
"I'll tell you what sis. I can't tell you the surprise yet but know what? I'll tell you you're going to get it on Friday."
"Really?"
Three more days, I could handle that. Besides if he was going to show me something it couldn't be a woman. Mark's smile got wider.
"Really and you know what sis? Before you see the surprise you and I are going to go out and have a great night."
"Where Mitch's?" I asked.
"No Megan I mean out, as in you dress up nice and we go have a good, just me and you."
I smiled at him. I had said I was lonely and now he was going to take me out. As usual Mark was trying to give me what I needed. I reached out and caressed the side of his scruffy cheek.
"You really are sweet Mark, but it's okay. I don't need a pity date from my little brother."
Mark took my hand in his and looking into my eyes said softly;
"It's not about me taking out my big sister."
"Then what is it" I asked.
Still staring into my eyes Mark replied;
"It's about a guy named Mark being lucky enough to be able to spend his Friday night with a beautiful girl named Megan."
"I..." I couldn't finish was he really asking me out?
"Well?" He asked still holding my hand.
"Well what?"
Mark laughed.
"Megan," He began. "Will you go out with me Friday night?"
"I..." I found myself smiling. One of my huge crooked ones that everyone around me always loved, the kind I hadn't used in a long time. "I'd love to!"
Mark smiled back; his gorgeous eyes were positively beaming.
"Great! I have a few things to do after school. I'll pick you up at seven."
Pick me up! I was smiling so hard my cheeks were beginning to hurt.
"Where are we going?"
"It's all a surprise Meg. Now climb into bed so I can tuck you in."
Still smiling from ear to ear I lied down and giggled like a little girl as Mark pulled the covers up to my neck and kissed my cheek.
"I'll be back as soon as I can, okay?"
"Okay"
Mark kissed me again and whispered in my ear;
"Sweet dreams my sister."
Mark blew out the other candle, and shut the door quietly behind him. I nuzzled my face into the pillow until I found a spot that smelled like his cologne, and sighing closed my eyes. I felt sooo much better, Mark was going to come home tonight and even spend some extra time in the morning with me. Not only that but he had even made it so I could sleep in his bed while he was gone. I could already feel myself begin to start to drift off. Just before I did I smiled as the last thought that went through my mind was of Friday night;
