Silly Bride novel (Winnie and Xavier) -
Chapter 144
Upon seeing the number, Winnie instantly shared the phone screen with Josiah.
Josiah found the number familiar, but at that moment, he could not recall whose it was.
When Winnie saw the look on Josiah's face, she immediately figured out he did not recognize the number. Hence, she put the phone on speaker and explained to Josiah, "This is Xavier's number at Lagune Mansion."
"Oh, right! You're right! Now I remember. This is indeed his number at the mansion."
At the same time, Xavier's growling voice could be heard from the phone.
"Dumbo, I have limited patience. It's one thing for you not to be home at such a late hour, but another for another man to be by your side. Who gave you the courage to do this, huh? Where are you right now? Tell me your address right away!"
Hearing that, both Winnie and Josiah fell silent.
"Why aren't you talking anymore? Did you turn mute, or did you lose your courage, huh? Answer me! Don't make me repeat myself three times. Do you still want to go to the charity gala or not?"
Winnie and Josiah shared a look in silence.
In the end, Josiah was the first to speak. He whispered to Winnie, "The memories he has must be the ones before the charity gala. He thinks that he's at that time period right now, and it's likely that he has forgotten everything that happened after that. You're still the Dumbo from before to him."
"Josiah? Are you the one beside Dumbo?" Xavier asked in surprise when he heard his good friend's voice.
However, Josiah was even more surprised than him. "You remember me again! Oh, right. You wouldn't have gone to my office to take the keys and my phone otherwise."
"Who took your phone? I was just about to ask you why I have your phone in my pocket. Where's my phone? Did you take the wrong one?"
After a moment of speechlessness, Winnie chimed in, "Your phone's with me. It's broken."
"You broke it? Forget it; forget about the phone. Are you feeling unwell? Why are you in the hospital? Also, why didn't you tell me you went to the hospital?"
Winnie stammered, "I-I'm visiting someone in the hospital. I'll come back right away. Just stay right at home and don't go anywhere."
"What do you mean? Were you not planning to come back?" Xavier sounded displeased. "Even if you're mentally challenged, I still like you because you're the woman I married. Where else were you planning to stay the night other than in my arms?"
Winnie's jaw nearly dropped.
In the past, she would have thought that he was good at flirting.
However, now, all she could think was how ludicrous he was and the awkwardness she felt.
Hence, Winnie cleared her throat and replied, "Didn't I say not to go anywhere? I'm coming back right away."
"No!" came Xavier's instant rejection. "I'll pick you up! I won't be at ease to wait for you to come back yourself."
Winnie parted her lips to object to that, but a wave of complicated feelings washed over her. Even when he had issues with his brain, he was still wracked with worry for her.
Nevertheless, before she could say anything else, Josiah spoke.
"Yes, come and pick her up! It's true that Dumbo isn't safe by herself so late in the night. You should drive my Mercedes-Benz over. I'll get a driver to send the two of you back later." Xavier instantly retorted, "Why should I drive your car?"
Josiah hissed, "It's because you drove my car back! Check your pockets and see if you have my car keys."
Two seconds later, Xavier wondered out loud, "I really do. Why are your car keys with me?"
"Would you believe me if I were to say that you took it from my office?" Josiah answered.
Xavier instantly sneered. "Do you really think I'd believe in that? Did you lose your marbles? How can I not know if I've taken your car keys or not?"
At that, Josiah pursed his lips for a while. "Fine. I drove to you drunk, and I accidentally left it there. Would you do me a favor and drive my car over when you come and pick up Dumbo? Please?" "Hmm..." Xavier mulled over Josiah's words. "Since you're so sincere, I'll do it."
"That's great! Thank you! It's late now, so hurry up and pick up your Dumbo."
"I don't need you to tell me that." Xavier then said to Winnie, "Dumbo, wait for me. I'll be there soon."
With that, Xavier ended the call.
Winnie stared at the phone for a while before frowning at Josiah.
"Did you have to make him come just to get your car back?"
"Of course not. Don't you replace this strange? Do you really think that people who have gone mad, lost their memories, or have impaired mental functioning will remember how to drive? He knew that he needed to go to my office to get my car keys, and he knew where my car is. I have to test him again once he's here."
"You're right." Winnie nodded in agreement. "You'll have to test his intellect and behavioral logic again."
"I'll make arrangements for that right away. Oh, and by the way," Josiah started, abruptly recalling something. "I think his cognitive bias has something to do with his obsession."
"What obsession?"
"Do you remember what I told you? He has never regretted doing anything for you. The only thing he regretted the most was bringing Yulissa into your life. He once said that, if he could turn back the time, he would want to return to the moment before Yulissa appeared. If my memory serves me right, the night when the charity gala was held was when Yulissa appeared."
"Yes, it was during that charity gala." Winnie remembered the incident clearly. Back then, she had attended it as Nathaniel's partner.
At that time, Yulissa was making out with Xavier in the stairwell, so she locked them there in her fury. After that, Xavier ordered all the security guards to go after her, but they never managed to catch her. "Are you telling me that is his obsession? When the toxin affected his brain, he chose to forget what happened after the charity gala?"
"Something like that. It's like dementia. People with dementia don't forget everything. That's why he's selectively remembering things that he wants. It seems..." Josiah paused mid-sentence to sigh. "It seems he's absolutely in love with you."
Winnie froze. It did seem as if she was very important to him.
Furthermore, after the heart-pounding night, she also felt that her feelings for him seemed to have changed.
She would admit that she had something for him back then, but those feelings had not been strong.
Now, the line between love and not seemed to be blurring. Something in her heart was changing. Spread the love
