Silly Bride novel (Winnie and Xavier) -
Chapter 198
With that, only Nate and Kevin were left at the entrance of the basement.
Kevin did not like the dark and damp environment in the basement.
He frowned and asked Nate, "Who was that who came out from there just now? Was that Yulissa?"
"That's impossible! She's dead. How many times do I have to say it?" Nate felt incredulous at what Kevin said.
Kevin obviously did not believe him. "I'm your brother, Nate. You can tell me even if you do anything wrong. I've always got your back."
Nate was utterly speechless. "Kevin, why don't you believe me?"
"It's not that I don't believe you, Nate. I'm just worried that you've been tricked by that woman. I don't want to see you being used by her over and over again. She wants Xavier to be dead, but he's our cousin. It's not worthwhile to ruin the relationship between our two families because of a woman," said Kevin earnestly.
However, Nate did not hear anything other than that one sentence.
"What did you just say, Kevin? She's been tricking me? You think she's still alive too, don't you?"
Upon realizing that, he immediately ran after the woman.
Fortunately, Kevin's reaction was fast enough. He quickly grabbed him and stopped him from running.
"You brat! Where are you going? Do you think you haven't caused enough trouble yet? If you run away again, how are we going to face the Fairchild family?"
Nate was not as strong as Kevin. He struggled but to no avail. "Kevin, let me go! I just want to go look for Yulissa!" His eyes lit up with hope. "Maybe you're right. Maybe she's been tricking me. Maybe the person who ran out earlier was her!"
"So what if that was really her? Wake up, Nate. This woman is not worth you sacrificing so much for her." Kevin grabbed his collar fiercely and gritted his teeth.
"No! I want to replace her! I must see her! I have a lot to tell her!" Thinking that Yulissa was probably still alive, and she probably had even appeared in front of him just now, Nate went mad.
Kevin was so upset and disappointed with his brother.
Just when he was about to lecture him again, Xavier and Winnie suddenly came back.
Not only that, but they even brought back the young woman who had run away just now.
The young woman's mask and hat had been taken off.
Her face could be clearly seen now, and she was not Yulissa.
Looking at this unfamiliar face, Nate was both disappointed and angry. "Who are you? Why did you come out from there? How did you get in?"
The young woman's eyes were red and teary. Upon hearing Nate's questions, she started begging, "I'm sorry! Please don't call the police. I'm not a thief. I'm just homeless and thought of staying here for a few days."
Nate looked at the strange woman in front of him suspiciously. "How did you get in?"
There was a flicker in the young woman's eyes. "This kind of lock is very easy to open, but I'm not a thief. I swear I didn't touch anything in this room. I only went in for less than five minutes before you guys arrived. I didn't want to do this, but I have no choice. My younger siblings and I don't have a place to live. I found this place by accident. Since it is unoccupied, I thought I could bring my siblings here to stay temporarily. I didn't spend much time there, and I didn't take anything inside. I'm really not a thief. Please don't call the police. My siblings need me. I beg you all!"
As soon as she finished her words, she knelt down in front of them and wept.
Winnie and Xavier had been observing every single movement and every subtle expression of this young woman and Nate.
When the woman stopped crying, the two exchanged gazes.
"Do you really not know this woman?" Xavier asked Nate with a gloomy expression.
Nate had always disliked Xavier because of Yulissa.
He sneered, "Why do you think I know her? I even suspect that you brought this woman here."
Seeing that Nate was acting rude, Kevin quickly scolded him, "Nate, how could you talk to your cousin like this?"
Nate immediately shut his mouth, showing respect to his brother.
Then he took out the key and opened the door to the basement.
Before opening the door, he turned around and gave the young woman a cold look.
"You'd better not lie. If you've taken anything inside, I will not let you off the hook."
The young woman reassured, "I swear I didn't touch a single thing in there!"
As soon as the door was opened, Winnie rushed in ahead of Nate.
Nate was unhappy with Winnie's behavior. When he was about to catch up, Xavier blocked his way with a cold face.
Xavier was much taller than Nate. He appeared to be superior as soon as he stood in front of Nate.
Besides, Xavier exuded a powerful aura that made Nate suffocate.
When Nate was about to fight back, Kevin immediately stopped him. "Nate, don't forget what you are here for today! You brought Xavier and Winnie here to see this basement. Please bear in mind what you should do and don't do anything unnecessary."
Winnie carefully searched the whole room without paying attention to what was happening outside.
In addition to some liquid medicine and white powder, Winnie also found a rotten apple core and several cigarette butts in the trash can.
She took some of the liquid medicine and white powder and packed up the apple core and two cigarette butts.
After that, she walked toward the door.
Nate glared at her. "What did you take? Give it back to me!"
"Don't you have any idea what I took? Those are the things that you want to give to Yolanda to use against Xavier."
Nate stared at Winnie. "Those are her things. Put them back!"
Winnie smirked and could not be bothered with him.
She turned to look at Xavier. "There are a lot of illegal drugs in it, and the lock is so easy to open. I think we should call the police. Otherwise, the consequences will be disastrous if these are spread out." Xavier held her hand naturally. "Okay. We'll do as you said."
Winnie continued, "I think we have to remind them to keep a low profile in order not to cause panic and alert others."
"Okay." Xavier nodded, looking obedient.
"What a simp." Nate rolled his eyes.
Xavier's face immediately darkened when he heard that.
However, with a wink from Winnie, his spirit was lifted again.
He glanced at Nate and smiled faintly. "Too bad there's no one for you to simp over."
Nate was so angry that he was unable to react.
Soon, the officers from the Narcotics Enforcement Department arrived.
In order to avoid causing an uproar in the residential area, they came in plain clothes.
Winnie knew one of the officers. He was Christopher's subordinate.
She walked over to have a few words with him. "Officer Campbell, this is a big case. Why is Captain Bennett not here?"
The officer was a timid young man. He immediately blushed when a beautiful woman like Winnie approached him.
He scratched his head nervously and said, "You're Ms. Garland, right? I saw your news on the internet. You're really amazing. I didn't expect you to know Captain Bennett. But I'm sorry. I can't reveal his whereabouts."
Winnie nodded. "Sure, I understand. It's just that I called him several times, but no one picked up. So I just thought of asking you. It doesn't matter. I'll get going first and let you guys take care of this." After that, Winnie got into the car. However, they only left after the officers from the Narcotics Enforcement Department drove off.
Xavier said, "We'll go to the hospital right now. I have already contacted Josiah."
"Okay." Winnie frowned. "This is a big case, but Christopher is not here. From what his subordinate said, I think he's been assigned a secret mission. For some reason, I feel that this mission must be related to Yulissa."
Xavier looked ahead and calmly analyzed, "If the apple core and cigarette butts you brought back have Yulissa's saliva on them, it means that Christopher has really been hiding Yulissa's death. This also means that your intuition is correct."
What Xavier said really made sense. However, he was surprised to hear that Winnie was laughing.
He frowned and tilted his head to glance at her.
"What are you laughing at? Did I say anything wrong?"
"No, what you said is absolutely right." Winnie was still laughing.
"Then why are you still laughing?" Xavier's frown deepened.
"Because I thought you would be jealous again for nothing and say something like 'why are you thinking about another man when you're with me?""
"Are you teasing me right now?" Xavier took another glance at her.
"Not really." Winnie was amused. "I'm just telling the truth. You got jealous easily in the past. I'm just curious as to why you're not jealous now."
Since the road was smooth, Xavier freed up one hand to hold Winnie's hand. "Because you were not really mine in the past. You always thought of replacing me whenever you were unhappy. I was worried that you would be stolen by another man. But things are different now, Dumbo. I know that I'm important in your heart, and you'll not leave me easily, so I won't be as jealous as before because I believe our relationship is very stable now."
"Not bad! You're pretty self-aware. That's my man!" Winnie praised him.
"Am I your man?"
"Of course!"
"Say it again. What am I to you?"
"Are you deaf?"
"I want to hear it again."
"Okay, I'll say it again. You, Xavier Fairchild, are my man!"
"Nice. I want to be your man till death do us part."
The car was filled with laughter. A journey of more than an hour felt as short as ten minutes for the two of them.
When the two appeared in the hospital holding hands, Josiah was slightly surprised.
He glanced at their hands that were intertwined and asked with a smile, "How is it? Has the case been solved? Did Yolanda tell you anything? You look really happy. It's rare to see the two of you looking so happy at the same time."
Winnie frowned and said playfully, "Do I usually look cold? Do you think everyone is Xavier Fairchild?"
Josiah laughed while adjusting his spectacles. "It seems that you're in a really good mood today." Then he looked at Xavier. "What is it so urgent that you want me to test?"
"It's all here." Xavier handed Josiah a paper bag.
He then explained to Josiah every item in the bag.
Josiah frowned. "Why is it Nate again? What a coincidence that he knows Yolanda too! He's really caused a lot of trouble."
Winnie shrugged and glanced at her watch. "How long do you need to get the result? Is one hour enough?"
"That's enough! By the way, if we can replace out that Yulissa is still alive, can Nate stop making trouble?"
"He has to because he's going to be sent to Alendor soon," said Xavier.
"Is he that obedient?" Josiah did not seem to believe it very much. "If he'd really listened to his dad, he wouldn't have become an actor despite the opposition of his whole family."
"Let's get the things done first and stop talking about him. Do you have Yulissa's DNA sample here? Don't tell me you have no control group after Yulissa's DNA has been extracted from the cigarette butt," said Winnie.
"I have it! I saved some of her blood samples when she asked me to sedate her several times."
"Perfect! Then we'll wait for your news."
In less than an hour, Josiah walked out of the laboratory with the report.
They hurriedly returned to Josiah's office.
Josiah said, "The DNA extracted from the cigarette butt is indeed Yulissa's. However, the apple core has rotted too badly, and no saliva sample can be extracted. But based on the type of bacteria on the apple core and the cigarette butt, it can basically be concluded that these two items were thrown into the same trash can at the same time. According to the degree of decay of the apple core, it has been there for about a week. In other words, Yulissa ate apples and smoked in that basement a week ago. She must be alive!"
"Indeed." Winnie frowned. Before she could finish her sentence, her phone rang.
Seeing the name on the screen, she hesitated but still answered the call in the end.
"Who's that? Why is she being so secretive?" Josiah asked Xavier, who was staring at Winnie's back.
Xavier furrowed his brows. "I don't know."
He was curious too.
Xavier saw the person's name on Winnie's phone: Dearest Wilhelm.
Dearest! Am I not her only dearest? Who the hell is that Wilhelm?
Xavier's face darkened. Josiah just sat in the chair and read the report in silence, afraid that he would irritate Xavier if he made any noise.
Fifteen minutes later, Winnie returned.
The atmosphere in this small office immediately tensed up because of Xavier's unhappiness.
Now that Winnie came back with a darkened face too, the atmosphere was even tenser.
No one knew why Winnie was so angry.
She stared at Xavier with a very serious expression. "Xavier, I have something very important to ask you. You must answer me truthfully. Otherwise..."
