However, Rufus did not know that Jacinta was pregnant back then.

That was because he was utterly disgusted by how Jacinta's parents had drugged him to have sex with their daughter just because he owed them a favor.

The moment he managed to contact the Fairchild family, he quickly gave the Sumner family a sum of money and fled the village without looking back.

By the time he found out he had another child out there, the child was already more than a year old.

That time, Jacinta's father, Cesare Sumner, had already married her off to a rich, older man who was from the area.

Initially, even Jacinta was not sure if the child belonged to Rufus or the old man she married after that.

It was not until she brought the child to the hospital one day for a checkup, which required a blood test, that Jacinta and her family discovered the child did not belong to her current husband.

From that day onward, she was treated horribly. Physical assault, verbal abuse, and domestic violence were a common occurrence.

Her husband even sent her one-year-old child back to her parents' house.

Jacinta wanted to flee from her abusive husband so badly, but the latter would not let her go.

Back then, she had pinned all her hopes on her son. Never did she expect Cesare, who was addicted to gambling, to gamble away all the family's assets. At his wits' end, he brought the child to the Fairchild family in hopes of using the child to blackmail Rufus for a sum of money.

Rufus did not expect Cesare to have the guts to seek him. He even thought the child was a random stranger the latter had brought to make it sound more convincing.

Yet, the paternity test had proven that the child was his.

Rufus hated Cesare to the bone and was utterly disgusted by him. Not only did Rufus not give Cesare a single cent, but he also forced the child to stay at the Fairchild residence.

Although Rufus hated the child's existence, he did not want his own flesh and blood to be brought up by such a despicable person.

And that child was Rufus' second son, Xavier's uncle, Stuart Fairchild.

When Cesare was chased out of the Fairchild residence, he did not give up and continued pestering them. Still, he was not a match for the Fairchilds.

Being the lazy and penniless person he was, he ended up roaming and begging on the streets for more than a month before returning home.

Upon arriving home, he was cornered by the creditors. As he tried to escape in the middle of night, he accidentally fell into a pond and drowned to death.

From that day on, his wife, Camille Pennington, became the creditors' target. Unfortunately, Cesare had spent all her hard-earned money long ago. There was no way she could pay off the debt. Unable to handle the situation, Camille hung herself in her own home a few days later.

With no news of her biological child, the death of her parents, and the terrible abuse she had to endure every day, Jacinta eventually lost her mind and became mentally ill.

When Cesare's creditors failed to replace him, they went straight to Jacinta and demanded she paid the debts on his behalf.

Seeing that she had lost her mind and her family was deep in debt, Jacinta's husband decided to chase her away.

Jacinta refused to leave and hid in the woodshed. But to her horror, her heartless husband actually set the building on fire.

The fire that day was strong. If it was not for the sudden rain, Jacinta would have died in the fire.

Just like that, she survived the incident. After roaming the town like a madwoman for over a month, she was finally taken home by her distant aunt.

She was nameless in the past, and everyone called her "Young Lady." Her name, Jacinta, was given by her aunt.

Jacinta lived in her aunt's place for over a decade, and her condition gradually improved. However, she had lost all memory of the painful experiences before she went crazy. Even so, that was great news for her. As soon as she recovered, she carried on living a normal life.

She even got married again and met a great partner this time.

However, they failed to have a child of their own even after years of marriage.

Perhaps the heavens had taken pity on the couple. One day, when they were on their way to the market, they found a little girl.

The little girl was Jacinta's adopted daughter and Winnie's biological mother, Lorelei Garland.

Afte having Lorelei, Jacinta and her husband lived a happy and wonderful life.

Alas, good things never last. Jacinta's husband died in a traffic accident. In the end, Jacinta had to bring up Lorelei alone while enduring the sorrow.

At that time, she had begun to be mentally unstable due to her husband's death.

Her condition only became worse when Lorelei was killed by Hamish and Yara. If it were not for Winnie, who needed her care, Jacinta would have lost it completely long ago.

When Winnie grew up and was taken back by her maternal grandfather, Jacinta began to suffer again.

There was even a period when her memories were jumbled together. The memories of losing her own son and Winnie moving abroad had caused her to be convinced that she had a grandson who had been taken away by the Fairchild family.

That was why she had been asking Winnie to help locate her grandson.

However, in reality, Jacinta's son was the one who had been taken away. She never had a grandson in the first place. It was just a mixup between two different memories.

As to when her memories got mixed up or when she regained them, it started from the day when Rufus invited her and Winnie to the Fairchild residence.

That day, they were sitting at the dining table, and Rufus was talking about giving Winnie the keys and the right to manage the Fairchild residence.

He talked about many other things apart from that. As Jacinta stared at him, she suddenly remembered the incidents from the past.

She recalled how her parents had drugged her back then and made her sleep with Rufus. She also remembered bearing him a child and realized that Stuart was her son.

In fact, she had known about Stuart and Zyon all along. They were never favored by Rufus.

In the past, before she regained her memories, she could not understand why Rufus always treated his eldest son better than the second son when both were his children.

However, it was at that moment she understood the reason. All that prejudice was because she was the one who gave birth to Stuart.

Winnie used to ask Jacinta all the time why she disliked Xavier and thought that men from the Fairchild family were not trustworthy. Jacinta could never come up with an answer because it was her gut feeling. However, she finally had her answer on that very day: all men from the Fairchild family were horrible beings.

She was also a victim back then. Her parents were the ones who were guilty, and she had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Yet, not only did he leave right after having sex with her, but he even took away her son. When all that happened, no one ever asked for her opinion.

If Rufus had taken good care of her son after taking him away, she would have been fine with it. Sadly, he did not. Not only that, but he had been oppressing her son.

At that moment, Jacinta's eyes were burning with rage as she stared at Rufus. It was as intense as the fire her first husband had set back then.

She hated her biological parents, but they had been dead for so many years.

She hated her first husband as well, but he, too, had already died from an illness.

She had nowhere to vent the hatred in her heart.

She also hated Rufus, but he was still alive and well. However, as long as he was alive and well, her son and grandson would never get to live a peaceful life.

That was why she had taken a few bottles of wine as an excuse to Rufus' residence and set it on fire that night. She was determined to burn the ruthless man into ashes.

After that, she saw Zyon who was running away in the courtyard.

The moment she found out that Zyon-the person who had done so many evil things-was her grandson, she was utterly mind blown.

She began helping Zyon to flee and raise funds and even cooperated with his kidnapping plan.

That was what brought her to where she was today.

Jacinta fell into a daze as she stared at the flickering flames. It took her a long time before she walked to the bed and picked up a pillow.

She carried it as though she was carrying a baby and murmured, "My baby, I miss you so much. When will you return to my side? I've been searching for you for so many years. Do you know that?" After holding the pillow and coaxing it for some time, she finally pulled out her phone.

She had saved Stuart's number in her phone.

When she set the Fairchild residence on fire, she had found a way to contact Stuart and identified the birthmark on his chest. With that, they officially reunited.

Now that Jacinta was missing Stuart, she could not help but give the latter a call.

However, her phone could not make international calls, so the call could not get through.

Soon, she began muttering to herself, "Stuart, Zyon is gone. He's gone... He's dead. Xavier shot him to death. You won't believe it. There were so many holes on Zyon's body, and he was drenched in blood. He died such a horrible death. I dreamed about him just now. He said he was cold and couldn't rest in peace. He said he wanted to get revenge. I know. Don't worry, Stuart. I'll definitely avenge Zyon. He's your only son and my only grandson. I won't let him die just like that. I'll definitely make the killer pay the price. Xavier's not the only person who needs to pay. Your father, that heartless man, owes you and Zyon a lot too. I swear I'll get back everything that belongs to both of you. I won't let Xavier have everything to himself. Yes. You're right, Stuart. As long as Xavier and Rufus die, the entire Fairchild family will be yours. It was yours in the first place. Okay... I'm getting a little tired. I'm going to bed now. You should sleep early too."

After speaking to herself on the phone for a long time, she finally crawled into bed and fell asleep.

However, she did not sleep well and woke up in less than twenty minutes.

As soon as she woke up, she sat up from the bed with a start.

She could sense that she had an attack earlier. Truth was, she had not experienced that for a long time. That was why she looked a little confused sitting on the bed.

After some time, she vaguely remembered making a call, which did not get through, and the words she had said to herself just now.

Although she was mentally unstable when she uttered those words, she did not replace them inappropriate after thinking about it.

Meanwhile, Winnie had another purpose for visiting this time, apart from taking Jacinta and Rachel back.

However, she had yet to tell Xavier about her mission. Since Yulissa had not been located and Rachel was stuck in the intensive care unit, she had reasons to stay back. However, she had to send Jacinta back to the country no matter what.

That was the decision she and Xavier agreed to after a discussion.

After talking about all that, Winnie exited Xavier's room and returned to hers.

Considering that Jacinta had fallen asleep, Winnie shut the door softly and tiptoed to the bed.

Suddenly, all the lights in the room were turned on.

As soon as the lights were on, Winnie saw Jacinta sitting on the bed, leaning against the head of the bed with her eyes staring straight at her.

Winnie had a terrible shock. "Granny, why are you awake?"

Her voice pulled Jacinta back to reality. Glancing at the bedside lamp, she mumbled, "The electricity is back."

"Yeah, there was a power outage just now. I remember turning the lights off when I left. Did you turn them on?" asked Winnie, quickly making her way over.

Jacinta nodded. "I did. I woke up and wanted to get a cup of water. That's when I realized there was a power outage. But there are candles in the room, so I lit them up."

Sensing Jacinta's unstable mental state, Winnie quickly helped her to lie down. "Have you had any water, then? Do you still want some?"

"No. I had it already."

"All right. Get some sleep, then. It's late."

"Okay. You should rest early too," said Jacinta. "Oh, where did you go just now?"

"I was next door," Winnie said, purposely leaving out Xavier's name because she was aware of Jacinta's mental state. "We talked about some things and made some decisions. I was about to talk to you about

it."

"Oh? What did you two discuss?"

"We're planning to send you back tomorrow. Rach can't leave the hospital for the time being, and we have some unfinished business to take care of, so we'll settle them while taking care of her."

Jacinta frowned and rejected Winnie's suggestion, "No. Rach and I were brought here together. How can I possibly go back first when she's still lying in the hospital? How am I going to explain this to her father? I can't do that."

Winnie furrowed her brows. She realized elderly people can be quite stubborn sometimes. "But Granny, this place is not as safe as our country. You could be in danger anytime."

"How can it be? Didn't Captain Bennett say this city is some general's territory and it's not that chaotic. I'll be fine as long as I don't simply move around, right?" Winnie was at a loss for words. "Granny-"

"Say no more, Winnie. Either I leave with Rach when she's better, or I don't leave at all. You can knock me out and take me away. Otherwise, I won't leave this place even if I die." Jacinta knew that killing Xavier there was much easier than in Avenport.

In fact, she would not have the chance to attack him once she was back in Avenport. Even if she got lucky and succeeded, she would have to bear the consequences.

However, in this evil place, she would not have to worry about anything.
