Silly Bride novel (Winnie and Xavier) -
Chapter 268
"No, you aren't dreaming," Winnie replied. At that moment, the person walking toward them was no stranger but Nate.
Winnie rolled up the windows on both sides of the car and said to Josiah, "Didn't you want to show off your driving skills just now?"
"Yeah." Josiah glanced outside and turned to face Winnie again. "However, they are blocking us with three cars. You aren't expecting me to ram them with this car, are you? You heard how I keep complaining about this lousy car, and it simply can't help us get out of this mess."
"I know," Winnie replied with a frown. "What I meant is you could reverse the car and leave via the route behind us. There's a narrow road about five hundred and fifty yards behind us, and we could take that way. Or, we could make a ruse, reverse the car, and replace an opportunity to escape."
Josiah retorted, "Do you think that could possibly work out? Look at their cars! Our car sucks! I've got a feeling that they will catch up to us in no time."
For one moment, Winnie was rendered speechless. Then, she glanced at Josiah and muttered, "What's that supposed to mean? Are you going to give up without a fight?"
With a knot between his brows, Josiah answered helplessly, “Nate's coming over. How about we talk to him? Maybe he's an ally?"
"That's impossible!" Rolling her eyes, Winnie pointed at her head and spoke. "He's been brainwashed by Yulissa. Besides, I've figured out why he's here."
"Why?"
"What else could it be? Yulissa must have contacted him herself. This woman is even smarter than we thought. Plus, she's cold-blooded and merciless. As long as she can make use of a person, she won't let the opportunity go to waste."
Winnie paused, then continued, "Yulissa can no longer rely on Harold. She broke my arm, too. Back then, I fought back, but she managed to escape. Later, I told Leandro to track her down, but he couldn't replace her. Ever since her escape, she must have been looking for Professor White."
She went on, "She knows the purpose of our trip very well, that is, to bring Professor White home. As we are bringing him home, all arrangements must have gone through the Fairchild family. She must have gotten Nate to sniff out info for her."
After that, Winnie frowned and asked Josiah sternly, "Does the helicopter belong to the Fairchild family or the Houghton family?"
Josiah understood what Winnie meant. He scratched his forehead with furrowed brows. "It belongs to the Fairchild family, but I've already told the members to keep their mouths shut. Nate could still replace out about it if he wanted to, though. D*mn it! What's wrong with him? Was he poisoned by Yulissa or something?"
"Probably. Didn't he come all the way here to do Yulissa's bidding? Call Xavier at once and tell them to be careful of Yulissa. Nate even knows our route, so I'm certain he's aware of the point of departure." "Okay!" Josiah took out his phone. "I'll call Xavier now."
At the same time, Nate arrived.
He walked past Josiah's side and stopped outside the window where Winnie was.
Winnie eyed him blankly before withdrawing her gaze.
Nate was immediately angered by the look of contempt on the woman's face.
He slammed a hand on the glass and screamed, "Winnie, roll down your window!"
About a month ago, Winnie had performed a tracheotomy on Nate at the Fairchild residence. The breathing tube in Nate's windpipe had already been removed, but there was still a bandage around his neck. As such, he did not sound as commanding as he used to.
Winnie could barely hear his words clearly, but she did not bother herself with him.
When she noticed Josiah was still trying to call Xavier, she began to panic. "What's wrong? Is no one answering?"
"Yeah." Josiah was anxious. "No one's answering the phone, but it doesn't make sense. He normally answers his phone. Do you have other numbers? Maybe Christopher's or the other mercenaries." "Christopher doesn't have a phone with him right now. Call Greta. I'll read out her number," Winnie replied. Then, she started to read a series of numbers.
Josiah dialed the number immediately and turned on the loudspeaker. Unfortunately, Greta's phone was switched off.
Winnie became even more nervous. "Dial another number."
She read out Mason's number.
Yet, the automated voice from the other end of the line indicated that Mason's number was not in service.
"What's going on?" Josiah exclaimed. "Something must be wrong on their end. Else, we would have been able to reach them.”
"Keep calling Xavier!" They had all been in a rush to escape, so Winnie did not think it abnormal if they accidentally reached an area with poor reception or switched off their phones.
In spite of this, it was strange that Xavier did not answer his phone.
"You call him!" Josiah passed his phone to Winnie.
Frowning, Winnie took the phone and asked, "What are you doing?"
"I'm going to kill someone!" Josiah opened the door and got out of the car.
Winnie could tell he was going to fight Nate, but it was too late for her to stop him.
Josiah had already grabbed hold of Nate's collar.
"Why the f*ck did you come here instead of resting at home?" Josiah glared at Nate and punched him in anger.
As a result, Nate stumbled a few steps back.
He tried to retaliate after steadying himself, but Josiah had already predicted his next move. In one swift motion, Josiah pinned Nate against the car.
Nate was an actor, and the entertainment industry favored individuals who were tall, thin, and fair-skinned. Although Nate was almost as tall as Josiah, he was skinnier than the latter.
Hence, he could hardly struggle after getting pinned against the car by a furious Josiah.
Josiah pointed at his face and gritted his teeth. "Are you in cahoots with Yulissa? Where is she now? What the h*ll do you want?"
Nate's mouth was already bleeding as a result of Josiah's punch. After spitting a mouthful of blood on the ground, he turned to regard Josiah again.
"You want to know all that, do you? Too bad for you, I'm not going to tell you," he answered coolly.
"Nate Fraser!" Josiah was enraged. "You're asking for it!"
Nate chuckled. "Know your place, Josiah. There are only two of you, while there are so many of us. I have three cars and six men. The only reason you hit me just now was that I allowed you to. I was simply going easy on you."
"Hah!" Josiah was about to laugh. "Going easy on me? Look at how weak and puny you are! Do you dare to fight me one-on-one? Eh? Answer my question!"
"Forget it, Josiah." Winnie sensed that Josiah was about to blow a fuse. Thus, she rolled down the window slowly and spoke to Josiah calmly. "Let him go today. Why waste your energy on people like him?" Winnie was exceptionally calm and collected, as if she was talking about the day's weather. This annoyed Nate immensely.
He cocked his head and stared at Winnie intently. However, when he spoke, it was to address Josiah, "Didn't you want me to answer your questions? Well, tell her to come out, then ask me again nicely." Josiah took a deep breath and adjusted his glasses. "What? I've never made such demands of this woman, even when she confronts me. Even your cousin, Xavier, can't do anything about her. Who the h*ll do you think you are?"
"Hmph." Nate let out a sarcastic laugh. "She's an arrogant woman because you always let her have her way. I won't do the same, though."
Winnie could not help but chuckle when she heard Nate's reply.
Earlier, when Josiah had driven the tank to force Harold and his men to surrender their weapons, Winnie and Josiah had picked up some guns and stored them inside the car.
Although her initial plan was to use the guns for self-defense, Winnie had a strong urge to threaten Nate and his men with them now.
She still had a cast on her left arm, but this did not hinder her from using her other arm to unlock the gun's safety catch and put a finger on the trigger.
Winnie was swift in her actions. Before Nate could finish his piece, she already had the barrel of the gun pressed against his temple.
Eyeing Nate with a frown, she chuckled coldly and said, "You were wrong, so allow me to correct you. I'm not arrogant because other people let me have my way."
"So?" Nate attempted to turn his head to look at Winnie. "Are you going to kill me here? If so, then you're no different from other murderers. You've got nothing to be proud of. You're just an animal who takes another person's life on a whim."
"Huh?" Winnie paused. "Nate, I never expected you to have such awareness. In that case, do you know what Yulissa has done?" She continued, "If I'm an animal, then she's even worse than one. And what does this make you, when you're the one helping her? If you still had a shred of moral conscience, you wouldn't have come all the way here to block our way and mess with us like a fool."
Winnie paused briefly, then said, "You know what, Nate? You were right. I won't kill you if you don't pose a threat to Josiah and me because I'm not an animal as you say. There's still a bandage around your neck. I bet you still remember where that incision on your neck came from. It was made when I performed surgery on you to save your life.
"Back then, I knew you regarded me as your enemy, and you might not appreciate my efforts to save you. Yet, I didn't harm you, and neither did I leave you for dead. However, take a good look at my arm now. It's fractured. Your beloved Yulissa hung me up and broke my arm with a bat while I was still conscious.
"If you still have a shred of moral conscience within you, you should know who deserves to be helped and who doesn't. Wake up, Nate!"
Nate stole a glance at Winnie's arm and frowned. "Why did Yulissa hang you up and break your arm?"
"Okay, fine. I get it now. You can't be reasoned with after all, for you only have Yulissa in your heart. She's your guiding principle." Winnie pulled the gun away from Nate's temple and regarded Josiah.
She ordered, "Get him in the car. With him inside, I bet the other cars won't get in the way and stop us. Since he doesn't want to answer me, I'm not going to force him. Let's go."
"All right! As you wish." Then, Josiah grabbed Nate and shoved him inside the car.
Winnie pointed the gun at Nate. "Don't try to pull a fast one. I have no intention of hurting you, but if you try to do anything funny, I'll shoot you instinctively. Got it?"
"Stop wasting your time on him!" Josiah started the car. "Just hit him if he tries to even move. As long as he doesn't die, I'll treat him.”
As expected, with Nate as their hostage, the three cars in front of Winnie and Josiah dared not make a move.
After that, Winnie shot the tires of the three cars when Josiah's car passed by them to ensure they would not be followed.
Upon seeing that, Nate scoffed, "You're such a cunning and manipulative woman."
Winnie retorted, "I'm just a regular woman, unlike your dear Yulissa. Still, I'm curious. Why did she tell you to block our way? So that she can take my place and run off with Xavier? If that's the case, who are you to her, then? Just a tool that can be discarded at any time?"
Winnie's words struck a nerve with Nate. Am I really just a tool that can be discarded by Yulissa at any time?
After receiving Yulissa's phone call a week ago, he had utilized all his resources to replace out about the private helicopters that would be dispatched by the Fairchild family.
Once he had discovered the itinerary, he had even traveled to this wretched place to see her. Although Yulissa had slept with him, Nate did not feel that she loved him in return.
She had also promised him that she would return home with him after locating Riley. Then, they would change their names and live a normal life.
However, something else did not add up. If Yulissa only wants to take Professor White home, why does she want me to harass Winnie? Why wouldn't she let me accompany her to look for her grandfather? Could she still be fantasizing about getting back together with Xavier?
Nate began to contemplate his situation, feeling confused and anxious.
Suddenly, he looked at Winnie and asked, "How do you women behave if you love a man? Will you use him? Will you sound dismissive when you talk to him?”
Winnie narrowed her eyes. Apparently, her earlier words had hit him hard.
However, when she was about to respond, her phone rang.
Xavier had finally called back.
Winnie could only use one arm at the moment, so she turned on the phone's loudspeaker.
As soon as the call was connected, she said, "Listen to me, Xavier. We met Nate on the way. I think our location has already been compromised. He's working with Yulissa, so you must be careful. Hey, Xavier, say something!"
To Winnie's surprise, Yulissa's voice sounded from the other end of the line. "Hi, how have you been, Winnie?"
"It's you!" A crease formed between Winnie's eyebrows immediately. "Where are Xavier and the rest?"
Yulissa chuckled. "Why should I tell you?"
