Singularity -
Chapter 34
Sephiroth took the opportunity of the distraction to make his way down into the ceremonial chamber under the castle. He walked up to the center podium and gave it a hefty kick. The secret door popped open. He pulled out the book of shadows and his pen and paper. He quickly copied down all he could replace about the guardians. There was no way to smuggle the original book out of Avalon so his notes on it would have to do.
Sephiroth put the notes in his pocket and returned the book of shadows to its hiding spot. He then quietly made his way out of the castle and exited town. Every time he passed the guardian it made him nervous. But, again he made his way through without an issue and once he was out of sight he opened the portal to Credos and passed through unnoticed.
Sephiroth climbed the stairs and found Michalei in the library. He placed the notes on the table beside him and took a seat in an oversized chair.
“Is this everything you could replace?” Michalei asked.
“It’s what I managed to get out of there with.” Sephiroth replied.
Michalei sifted through the papers and said, “It’s good enough.”
“What of your studies? Are you any closer to getting back in Avalon?” Sephiroth asked.
“I’ve figured out a few new things that I’ve yet to try.” Michalei stated. “You’ve been enchanted before correct?”
“Back in my younger years, why?” Sephiroth asked confused.
“It just might work then.” Michalei commented.
“What might work?” He asked again.
Michalei placed his hand on Sephiroth’s chest. He began to shimmer and then changed before his eyes. In an instant Sephiroth realized he was staring at himself.
“That’s unsettling.” Sephiroth commented.
“I can imagine so.” Michalei smiled and changed back into himself.
“I don’t think I can pass for you just yet. But at least I know that part of Domascus’ journal is true.” Michalei stated.
“Ah, so making progress then.” Sephiroth sighed.
“We’ll get her back my king. Keep the faith.” Michalei reminded him.
“I know. I just dread going back there. I feel sick seeing them together. But I promised Kira I’d be there for supper so I’d best get to it.” Sephiroth chuckled.
“Be strong and safe my king.” Michalei bowed.
“Work fast my son.” Sephiroth replied and shook his hand.
“You have my word on it.” Michalei smiled.
With that, Sephiroth left Michalei to his work. He returned to Avalon in hopes that the evening would pass by quickly. In reality he would have no such luck. Suffering knew no bounds when one suffered alone.
Kira about tackled her father as he came strolling through the door. She was so excited he couldn’t help but smile as she slipped her arm through his and led him to the dining room.
“We’re having a festival tomorrow afternoon papa.” She gushed as they sat down at the table.
“Are we now?” Sephiroth asked as Domascus strolled in and sat down next to Kira.
“It’s all set up.” He smiled and kissed her cheek. “All people have to do is show up and have a good time.”
“I can hardly wait. Thank you darling.” She kissed him back.
It was all he could do to muster the strength to not cringe. “Well done then. I take it we’re celebrating the union?”
“Yes papa, amongst other things.” She giggled. “We thought it would give everyone the chance to relax and get to know Domascus as I do.”
“Wonderful idea my daughter.” Sephiroth replied trying hard not to choke on his supper. “I’ll be sure to rest well so I can keep up with you two.”
“I wouldn’t worry too much about that sir. I’ve kept it simple.” Domascus chuckled.
“I’m looking forward to it already. Sounds exciting.” Sephiroth smiled. “I hate to ruin the day but Credos was a dead end. No one there has seen or heard from Michalei in some time.”
“Maybe he’ll just go away.” Kira shrugged.
“I wish you were right Kira. But I know from experience that when you’re drunk and delirious on power you’ll stop at nothing to get the result you accept as the truth.” Domascus stated.
Kira sighed, “Well, Avalon is protected as long as the guardians stand. I’m not worried that he’s going to turn up here any time soon.”
“Quite true,” Sephiroth agreed.
“So, let’s finish supper and forget about it for the night. Tomorrow we have something to celebrate.” She smiled.
They agreed and ate silently. Sephiroth excused himself leaving Kira and Domascus alone for the night.
“You know I understand why he’d be a bit bothered calling me son.” He said.
“Really?” She asked as she finished desert.
“Before I was imprisoned for those years, I was several years older than he was. If not for the suspension of time in the prison, I’d look much like he does.” He sighed.
“I don’t see what age has to do with wisdom or insight.” She argued.
“You would be the exception to that rule. Youthful and ancient in one precious package.” He smiled.
“You sweet kiss ass.” She chuckled. “Come on, let’s go upstairs.”
Kira took Domascus by the hand. A flash of light passed and they were in the bedroom. He wrapped his arms tightly around her and breathed into her hair.
“I want to start a family Domascus.” She said suddenly.
“Goddess Kira,” He choked surprised.
“I know. It’s silly with everything going on. Not to mention how fast everything has rushed upon us. But it’s really important to me.” She said softly.
“You’re so young Kira. We have years ahead of us for this.” He replied.
“You don’t want children?” She pouted.
“Of course I do. I’m just not sure about the timing.” He smiled. “How about we just live free and let fate decide when it is time?”
“I can live with that.” She kissed him igniting the fire within them.
“By the goddess woman!” He exclaimed lifting her into his arms.
“I am going to love you forever.” She told him as he laid her down on the bed.
He kissed her. “I would do anything you ask of me. Regardless of the outcome, I love you.”
Domascus took Kira in his arms. He made love to her all night. Their passion fed their energy making it impossible to sleep. They didn’t mind, content to be together well into the morning hours. She gave into him one more time before they had to give up and get out of bed.
There was too much for them to do before the afternoon festival. Domascus dragged Kira from the bed as she complained and pushed her to the bathroom to get cleaned up before going out in public. Once motivated, it was easy for her to slip into a dress and head downstairs to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. They met Sephiroth there and sat down quietly sipping the coffee with not much to say.
Domascus stood when he finished his coffee, “You ready darling?”
“Absolutely,” She replied taking his hand. “You coming papa?”
“I’ll meet you kids down there.” He smiled. “Go have a great time.”
Kira took hold of Domascus’ arm and joyously bounced away with him in tow. They walked a few streets into town and picked a good place to stand. They raised their hands to the sky and sprigs of flowers and ivy began to crawl across the balconies and through the town square. Living decorations flourished to life drawing the people away from their day to day routines.
All at once a buffet table made from the earth sprang forth. It filled with foods more wondrous than even the chef could have imagined. Appetizers, deserts, fresh fruits, and vegetables all lay out on wooden platters ready for the picking. When everyone thought it had to be finished for sure, a fountain sprung forth from the ground in the center of it all. It surrounded an eternal flame as the water danced around it. The people applauded in awe as Kira and Domascus stood back proud of the creation.
“In times of peace or in times of war, there are still many reasons to celebrate the history and life of our blessed land. For you, our people, make us proud to be your king and queen.” Domascus said cheerfully.
“Enjoy this gift we give to you. Gather and be well always. We love each and every one of you.” Kira added with pride.
As the people celebrated, Sephiroth looked on from the shadows. He felt a slight pang of guilt that was followed by the thought that he could have judged the whole thing wrong. The anger quickly pushed the foolish idea from his mind. He sat back and waited silently knowing it wouldn’t be long until it was all revealed.
