Orchid

“What is Orion’s mother like?” I asked anxiously as Bisa helped me with my hair.

I was sitting in front of the large vanity in my room while Bisa stood behind me plaiting my hear into one long braid down the middle of my back.

“Luna Orla is…” Bisa paused, trying to soften what was undoubtedly a harsh character with clever wording. “She is fierce. Strong. Protective of her sons and her pack. She enjoys being a Luna and a mother,” said Lisa decisively.

“Is she easy to get along with?” I asked more bluntly.

“No,” whispered Bisa.

“Is she reasonable?” I asked.

“It depends on who you ask,” said Bisa.

“I’m asking you!” I pointed out. “What do you think?”

“She is a tad difficult to please,” said Bisa decisively.

I took a deep breath.

“You will do well, Luna Orchid!” Said Bisa reassuringly. “I have a very good feeling about your first lesson.”

I did not share her sentiments. My first lesson was going to be on the training grounds where the werewolves prepared themselves for combat. I was at an obvious disadvantage. I was human and mortal. I was fragile compared to them: no super speed or super strength. No exponential healing rates. No supernatural ability to burst out of my skin transforming into a giant wolf. That sort of thing.

“How will I fight she-wolves?” I said more to myself than to Bisa or Orion who had just walked in.

“Fight she-wolves?!” He said loudly, the outrage on his face apparent.

“What makes you think you will be fighting she-wolves?!” He demanded.

“Your mother said my first lesson is one on the battle field!” I said, my nerves climbing higher with each passing moment.

Orion’s tense expression dissipated. He laughed, surprising me.

“You will not be fighting my little human. You will be supervising the pack warriors training for battle on a mock battlefield,” explained Orion.

I raised my eyebrows. How was I to supervise the pack warriors’ training? My knowledge of combat was zilch.

“Don’t look so worried,” chuckled Orion. “The Alpha is a father and a leader to the pack. The Luna is the Mother. She sees about the wellbeing of the pack members by nurturing them so at training, the Luna acts a sort of referee. She watches over those training to see who needs a break or medical attention or water or who is being too rough towards someone else. That sort of thing,” said Orion.

I exhaled a breath I had not realised I had been holding in. I could do that. I could watch over the pack members and make sure the training was fair and not too harsh and I could provide the medical attention myself!

“I can do that,” I said confidently.

Orion grinned. He escorted me out of the huge mansion. I had not roamed the grounds much but I knew there were acres and acres of land on the brothers’ estate. It was chilly out so Orion had bundled me up in a warm cloak. He was not dressed for the cold but he was always as hot as a furnace so I supposed he did not need to be. We walked through some hedges. I caught glimpses of a garden overflowing with flowering types. Varieties I had never seen before. Magnus and Cerberus flanked us along with two other werewolves I did not know. Bisa walked behind me.

I could hear the hum of thousands of voices whispering together. When we reached the throng of pack members milling about the training grounds, the chattering intensified. Wolves craned their necks to catch a glimpse of me. Some of the shorter ones, namely the children, stood on tiptoe. I fought the urge to hide behind Orion but he was about to introduce me to the pack as his future Luna.

After replaceing out the earth-shattering news that my parents had sold me to the Alpha, I had lost some of my desire to return to them. I could not trust them. Perhaps, I was better off here. I knew this was not the entire pack, just those who were training on this particular day. Orion addressed the large crowd.

“Welcome everyone!” He thundered, his voice booming out over the excited crowd. “I am so pleased to finally introduce you all to my Luna, Orchid!’ He announced proudly, eliciting a deafening chorus of cheers.

The werewolves began to mummer excitedly, their suspicions regarding me confirmed. I was to be their Luna, a human Luna. I was relieved they did not seem to mind my mortality but even that would change. I spotted Luna Orla in amidst a group of highly skilled warriors. She greeted me with a cold stare.

“Today she will be supervising the training!” Announced Orion.

Another round of cheers rose up in response to that.

“I trust that you will show her the same respect and consideration that you have shown me,” added Orion.

There was more applause. Many nodded their heads eagerly.

“So everyone attends training?” I whispered in Orion’s ear.

I had expected a crowd of young warriors, mostly male with a few she-wolves which seemed to be the pattern at the mansion but here I saw young, middle-aged and elderly werewolves. There were even a few teenagers and children. There was a considerable number of women and a few of them were pregnant.

“Yes, every werewolf in the pack must attend basic training one to three times a week,” said Orion. “The elite warriors in the pack have advanced training anywhere from four to six times a week,” continued Orion.

I nodded. I frowned.

“So…why don’t you just teach me then? Rather than bother your mother?” I asked with an awkward little laugh.

“My mother has to be involved in training her successor,” murmured Orion apologetically.

I nodded mutely. Orion walked me over to Luna Orla and I almost fell over when I saw who she was with. I had thought they had gone back to Gregoire. The Marys were back and regarding me with smug little smiles.
