Soul Cursed Protector
Chapter 7: EastHaven

Leon jumped to his feet and brushed himself off, but when looked around, it dawned upon him that he was all alone. Ellyn, Master Gawain, and Ulrich were nowhere to be found, “Ellyn, Master Gawain, Ulrich. Where are you guys?” he called out, the only thing he heard in return was the echo of his own voice. Not one to be discouraged, Leon was determined to replace his friends and Master, and with that determination he pressed on. What seemed like an eternity, Leon stumbled upon what looked like a graveyard at first sight. Where am I?

“This is holly ground that you stand upon, child.” a voice answered. “Who said that?” Leon looked around nervously. “Show yourself.”

“Keep your voice down.” the person demanded. Leon could make out a silhouette of someone walking his way. “Show some respect, child.”

“I am no child.” Leon grumbled. “This is the last chance I am going to give you to show

yourself.”

“Give an old man time will ya.” as the silhouette drew near Leon could tell that it was an elderly man walking slowly his way, using a cane to help keep himself steady. “You youngsters are always in such a rush nowadays. Learn how to take it slow every once in a while.”

“Who are you?” Leon asked. “And where am I?”

“My name is Robin” the old man answered. “And I told you before that you’re on holly ground.”

“Okay, Robin. That doesn’t exactly explain to me where I’m at.” Leon said.

“First be respectful and tell me your name, young man.” Robin responded. “Then I will tell you exactly where you stand.”

“My name is, Leon.” he belted.

“Last name please.” Robin grumbled.

“Cromwell.” Leon answered. “Now will you tell me where I replace myself?”

The old man turned away from Leon and started mumbling to himself. “A Cromwell here?” he muttered. “I thought for sure that bloodline had been wiped out ages ago. But that would explain how he has ended up here of all places.”

“Robin, you promised that you would tell me if I told you my last name, keep your end of the deal.” Leon told him.

Robin turned to face the young man, “Do you remember the Great War, child?” his raspy old voice sounded very proud.

“Every student of the Academy knows of the Great War.” Leon answered with pride. “Academy?” Robin said. “What’s that?”

“It’s a place they send young men and women to train to become warriors, everybody knows that.” Leon chuckled.

“What else do they teach you there?”

“All kinds of things.” Leon smiled. “How to read scrolls, the use of Alchemy. The Masters there also taught us how to use a bow and arrow properly, teachings in the way of the blade. Important skills such as that.”

“Interesting, but why teach you things in such a place as that? Tis what a courtyard is for.” “The Academy has been around for many a year, they no longer teach young people such as I,

in a courtyard. Proving yourself at the Academy is how you become a true Knight nowadays.” Leon said with pride. “Just how old are you?”

The old man gave a kind hearted smile, “Old enough.” he joked.

Leon gave a faint smile in return, not that he didn’t replace Robin’s joke to be funny, it’s just his mind was more focused on where he had found himself. “Will you please tell me what this place has to do with the Great War?”

Robin’s face narrowed, and he pointed his cane in every direction as he spoke, “Open your eyes boy.” he said. “This is where the Great War took place, that is why it is holly ground.”

Leon eyes widened, “How is that possible?” he asked. “Very few Knight’s even know of the where to replace such a place, and the ones that did, took that secret to their graves. And you’re telling me that’s where I stand now? Impossible.”

“Ha, ha, ha.” Robin laughed. “It is very possible child, but the biggest question you should ask yourself is how you got here, and why.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“Well for one, you are a Cromwell.” “What’s that got to do with anything?”

“You have a powerful bloodline running through your veins child.” Robin explained. “I can tell by looking into your eyes, that power is slowly awakening inside of you.”

“You think that I come from some great bloodline?” Leon laughed. “I’m just a poor farmers son, nothing more than a peasant is what I am.”

Robin turned his back to Leon and started mumbling to himself yet again, “He has no idea who he truly is, and what destiny awaits him.” he said to himself. “Tell me boy, what of your father?” he turned and asked.

Leon stared down at the ground with a look of sadness, “My father was killed by the Dark Knights, so was my mother. I was saved by a man named Gawain who went on to become my master at the Academy.”

“I see.” is all Robin would say in response to Leon’s words. “Enough about me, tell me more of this place.” Leon said.

“Like I said before, this is where the Great War took place many a years ago. But what you didn’t know, is that both sides used weapons of great power, the power of the gods.” Robin explained.

“I’m not sure I understand.” Leon replied. “Even if there was such a power, how could such people control it?”

“That’s a good question.” Robin smiled. “Somehow, Mages infused axes, bows, and swords with powerful magic, which only the chosen could control.”

“If what you say is true, why would such a power be needed to win a war?” Leon questioned. “What exactly has that Academy of yours been teaching you?” Robin sarcastically responded.

“Here’s how the real story goes, a very kind Mage, who’s name we do not speak for reasons that I’m sure you yourself will understand one day, started to experiment with a magic that none had ever heard of before, nor had ever laid eyes upon. He was determined to unlock the secrets of this magic, that in hopes it would save the King he served and the kingdom he so loved.

This Mage worked endlessly day and night, up until the point that it started to slowly drive him mad. It even got to the point that he used animals as his test subjects, when those failed he used

human’s, thus the Dark Knights were born.”

“Wait, I thought the Dark Knights were created by an evil King, and Edward before he became the new King vanquished that evil with his legendary blade.” Leon interrupted.

“Hmph, I do not know of the tales that your Academy spines. But the Dark Knights were created by the Mage, and such evil is never truly vanquished, as you found out first hand child.” Robin replied. “If you don’t mind I would like to continue, uninterrupted of course.”

Leon nodded his head, letting the old man know that he would hold his tongue and let him finish his tale. “You’re starting to learn, that’s good.” Robin said. “Now where was I? Oh yes. The Mage had created The Dark Knights. Instead of destroying them like he should have, he cast a spell that would hide them from the world until the Mage felt like they would be of use. Over the years this Mage started to perfect the magic that he had been obsessed with for so long. And he now had the power to control that which he had created, even monsters bowed down to him as well.

It wasn’t long before the Mage was corrupt with power, with the ability to now bend things to his will. He wanted to change the world as he saw fit, in his mind the only way he could do that was to cleanse the world and rebuild it in his image. So the once kind Mage had now filled his heart with evil and cared not for others, even the King he served had to die, along with the kingdom that he once loved, and at one time protected. Not just his kingdom but all the lands in the world of Todrain had to be cleansed.

The Mage made the choice that the first kingdom that had to fall was his own. He took to the top of the castle and caste forth a spell of darkness that swept across the land. The Mage made sure that none survived, and the ones that did, he sent the Dark Knight’s out to finish what the spell could not. It was nothing more than a senseless massacre of innocent lives, lives the Mage saw fit to snuff out. If the Mage did let a person survive it was just to turn them into his servants. However what he did to the King was far worse. The evil Mage needed a commander that he could trust, that would lead his Dark

Knight’s to victory over all that stood in his way. Without hesitation or remorse he used his new found powers to turn the King himself into the commander of the Dark Knight’s, thus the Mage’s army of evil was complete.” Robin stopped his tale short, which seemed to annoy Leon ever so slightly.

“What happened next?” Leon asked with excitement. “You can’t just leave a story unfinished.” “I believe I’ve said enough for now.” Robin explained. “And your journey here young one, is

about to come to an end.”

“What do you mean?” Leon started to feel light headed again and he couldn’t understand why, he tried to speak, but no words would come from his mouth. That’s when he realized that he had felt this same sensation before, after he had given the piece of the blade to Master Gawain. He fought against what he was experiencing but it proved to be to much, and he passed out yet again. When he awoke he found himself in a room with Ellyn and Ulrich hovering over him.

“Well look who finally decided to rejoin the living.” Ulrich joked.

“I see that you’re still a smart ass.” Leon joked back raising himself up, before he could utter another word Ellyn hugged him. “What was that for?”

“I’m just glad that you’re okay.” Ellyn blushed. “You had us all scared.”

Watching Ellyn give Leon a hug then blush afterwards made Ulrich jealous, which was something he had never felt before and wasn’t sure how to handle it. “You know that you shouldn’t push yourself that hard like you did back in the Cave Of Sorrow, if you can’t handle the results.” he scolded.

“What has gotten into you?” Ellyn turned and asked.

“Nothing.” Ulrich mumbled. “I need some fresh air, this room is getting to me.” and out the door he went.

“What in the world has gotten into him?” Ellyn muttered, as she looked on confused.

Ellyn was clearly getting upset at Ulrich’s reaction, which made Leon change the subject, “Don’t

worry about him.” he said. “Anyways, where are we? And how did you guys get me here?”

“Oh.” Ellyn cracked a faint smile. “After you passed out, Gawain and Ulrich helped you back onto your horse, luckily Gawain knew of a place close by that we could take you and let you rest.”

“Where is that exactly?” Leon questioned.

“East Haven.” Ellyn answered. “That’s all I know, we haven’t exactly had the chance to explore

much.”

“East Haven?” Leon replied. “I think I’ve heard of this place, but I can’t recall much at the moment. My thoughts are still somewhat foggy.”

“I know.” Ellyn’s eyes widened, which usually meant trouble. “Lets grab Ulrich and go explore the town.” she jumped up off the trundle and motioned for Leon to follow. “Hurry up, slow poke. We haven’t got all day.”

“Alright. Alright.” Leon made his way to his feet, but not to fast, he was still somewhat weak. “Lets see if Ulrich is still around, then we can explore.”

“Yay.” Ellyn clapped with excitement before grabbing Leon’s hand and pulling him out the door. She couldn’t spot Ulrich anywhere near the hall of the Inn. “Where could he have gone off to?”

“I don’t know.” Leon answered. “Look at this way, it gives us an excuse to look around the

town.”

“Then lets hurry.” Ellyn said. She grabbed Leon’s hand once more and pulled him along as they ran out of the Inn and onto the streets of East Haven. “Wow.” she exclaimed, looking around the town from where they stood. “This place is huge. Why is East Haven called a town? It’s bigger than most cities I’ve seen.”

Leon was quite surprised as well at the size of East Haven, it was much bigger than he could have ever imagined it to be. “You’re right, this town is amazing. But why act so surprised?”

“Why say that?”

“Well, you did help Gawain and Ulrich get me here. Did you not?”

“Yes, but Gawain wanted to make sure that it was night fall before we entered this town.” Ellyn replied. “I didn’t really get the chance to see what the town looked like until now.”

Leon smiled, “That makes sense.” however in the back of his mind he wondered why Master Gawain wanted to wait until night to bring them into the town of East Haven. While he pondered it finally came to him where they had found themselves, “Did Master Gawain give any instructions to what we should do?”

Ellyn nodded, “He said for us not to leave the Inn until he had returned.” “Damn it.” Leon grumbled.

“What is the matter?”

“We have to replace Ulrich and get back to the Inn as quickly as possible.” Leon frantically said. “Why?”

“Because now I remember exactly where we are, and why Gawain waited until night fall to enter this place.” Leon answered. “We are in the town of thieves.”

“What? This town is full of thieves?” Ellyn gasped.

“Yes, I remember being taught that East Haven was a town built by thieves.” Leon responded. “Not a place you want to spend a lot of time at, if you know what I mean.”

“Then why are we standing around talking? Lets replace Ulrich.” Ellyn grabbed Leon’s arm yet again quickly pulling him along.

Thirty minutes or so of searching the town provided the results they were hoping for, there standing by a fountain at the center of town was Ulrich. “Ulrich, there you are, we’re so glad that we found you.” Ellyn let go of Leon’s hand and went running up to Ulrich.

“Took you guys long enough to replace me.” Ulrich was sarcastic with his response. “What do you want from me anyways?”

“We have to get back to the Inn with haste” Ellyn said with a fright.

“Why the look of concern?” Ulrich laughed. “And why are you guys in such a hurry to get back to the Inn?”

“This is the town of thieves, that’s why.” Leon told him.

“And your point?” Ulrich huffed. “Thieves can sometimes be the most reliable, at least that’s what I’ve been told.”

“You knew?” Leon responded back.

Ulrich smirked, “Everyone at the Academy knows of this place, it even scares the old man being here.”

“Master Gawain is just trying to keep us safe, you know what happens to people that come here.” Leon sighed.

“The old man isn’t trying to protect us, he just want’s to keep us under lock and key.” Ulrich barked. “Well I’m not going to take it any longer. I’m going to explore this town and I don’t exactly care if the old man likes it or not. You two can either come with, or go back to the Inn. I could care less.” he turned his back to them both.

“I’m not going to let you explore on your own, you know that.” Leon took a deep breath. “Count

me in.”

Ulrich slapped Leon on the back, “I knew that I could count on you.” he then turned and looked over at Ellyn, “What about you?”

“What about me?” she asked.

“Are you in, or out?” Ulrich chuckled.

“Do you even have to ask?” she replied with confidence. “I’m up for another challenge.” “Good.” Ulrich smiled. “Then its settled, lets explore the town of East Haven.”

The three of them walked through the town, exploring with wonder and curiosity in their eyes,

the sites of the town were breath taking for the three young ones. They walked through the town square, watching people in weird clothing dance in the streets, which was an odd sight indeed. Then they ventured to the market place where all different sorts gathered to buy and sell goods. Next to be explored was the tavern, where they stumbled upon Gawain by accident talking to an unknown male.

“Look guy’s, it’s Gawain.” Ellyn pointed. “Lets go and get him.”

Leon and Ulrich both were quick to grab hold of her arms, “Stay put.” they both said at the same time.

“Why? I thought that we were searching for him.” Ellyn said. “Don’t you see that he’s busy talking with someone?” Leon asked. “So?” she shrugged. “Isn’t that just another one of your friends?”

“No, it’s not.” Ulrich whispered. “We’ve never seen that man before, right Leon?” “Right.” Leon answered. “What do you think they’re talking about?”

“I don’t know.” Ulrich answered. “But I intend to replace out.” “Then lets go.” Leon agreed. “I am just as curious as you are.” “Being sneaky.” Ellyn smiled. “This should be fun.”

It took some effort getting close enough without being spotted, but they pulled it off. “What do we do now?” Ellyn asked.

“We hide here.” Ulrich answered before pushing Ellyn and Leon behind one of the huts. “What was that for?” Ellyn responded angrily.

“Shush!” Ulrich motioned with his finger up to his lips. “We don’t want the old man to hear us.” “Be quite you two.” Leon demanded. “I can’t hear what they are saying.”

And with that they quietly listened in on Master Gawain’s conversation with the mystery man standing before him. “You know why I’m here.” the man said.

“I haven’t the foggiest clue to why you are here, nor do I know who you are.” Gawain snarled.

“Who I am is not of importance.” the man hissed. “But what you carry with you is.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Gawain smiled. “Why don’t you run along back to where you came from.”

“Don’t play coy with me.” the man responded with anger in his voice. “You have no idea who you are dealing with.” he unsheathed his blade, “Hand over the piece of blade that you carry.”

“You are a fool.” Gawain laughed. “Do you really think that you are a challenge for me?” “I might not be.” the man replied with a smile. “But with their help, things could end

differently.” he pointed in every direction, and Gawain found himself surrounded by thieves with their blades drawn and aimed solely at him.

“He’s in trouble, we have to help.” Ellyn wanted to rush over by herself, but still she waited.

Ulrich disliked the old man with every fiber of his being, but for some reason he could not explain, he found himself in agreement with Ellyn. “Ellyn is right we have to help.” he readied his sword for battle.

“Wait.” Leon demanded. “If we rush in now we could make the situation worse than what it is.” “What do you suggest?” Ulrich questioned.

“We wait.” Leon answered.

“If that’s the way you want it, then so be it.” Ulrich agreed, hoping that it didn’t make Ellyn upset with him.

“Guys you can’t just leave Gawain to defend against that many people.” Ellyn said with pleading eyes.

“Master Gawain knows what he’s doing.” Leon told her. “Wait and see for yourself.” “Okay.” Ellyn sighed. “But if anything happens, promise me that you guys will help him.” “We promise.” Leon and Ulrich answered at the same time. They waited patiently just to see

what would happened next, if a fight did break out they would be ready to aid Gawain the best they

could.

“This is your last chance, naive. Give me the artifact.” the man demanded.

Gawain drew his blade, staring straight into the mans cold eyes, “If you want it that badly, then come and take it.” he motioned for the man to come at him.

“I’m not waiting any longer.” without thinking of the consequences, Ellyn rushed off to aid Gawain in battle.

“Ellyn. Wait.” Leon called out to no avail.

“To late to do anything about it now.” Ulrich smiled, then followed in pursuit.

“Damn, Master Gawain isn’t going to be happy about this.” Leon muttered before pursuing.

With the distraction one of the thieves took the opportunity to shot an arrow that sailed through the air with precision straight towards Gawain’s back. Little did the thief know that Ellyn would jump in at the last second, knocking the arrow out of the air before it reached its target. Gawain turned to see Ellyn smiling brightly at him. “What are you doing here?” he grumbled.

“Saving you.” she answered.

He wanted so badly to scream at her for leaving the Inn and disobeying a direct order, however he could not. If it wasn’t for her the arrow that lay broken on the ground would have ended up piercing the flesh of his back. “Thank you Miss Ellyn, I owe you my gratitude.” he smiled back at her. “But we must talk about understanding commands when all this is said and done.”

“Don’t hog all of the glory.” Ulrich came running up and knocked one of the attackers to the ground.

“You to are here, Ulrich?” Gawain acted surprised, even though he wasn’t. “Someone has to save your ass old man.” Ulrich laughed.

“And what of Leon?” Gawain questioned.

“Right here, Master Gawain.” Leon said. “We can’t let you have all the fun.”

Gawain smiled at the sight of his students and Ellyn, but still he felt a hint of anger building up in the pit of his stomach. “Looks like its a bit of an unfair fight now.” he joked, chocking back his true feelings.

The man laughed, “One grown man, and a bunch if kids? You call that an unfair fight for us?

Do you joist?”

“I assure you, that this is no joking matter.” Gawain replied. “Either attack and die, or lower your weapons and let us pass.”

“My choice?” the man smirked. “Yes.” Gawain nodded.

“Since you refuse to hand over the piece of blade peacefully, then I will take it by force and kill the four of you.” the man proclaimed. “Kill them all and retrieve the artifact. ”

“Prepare yourselves for battle.” Gawain commanded. “Use all of the skills at your disposal.”

Right before the group of thieves and their leader could attack, a voice could be heard off in the distance. “Stand down.” but the group did not listen at first which seemed to infuriate whoever was making the demands. “I said, stand down. I’m the King Of Thieves, you will listen to me when I speak.” the King Of Thieves road up closer on his horse. At first glance you could tell that he was a big burly man, with a thick red beard, and long curly red hair. He wore a heavy armor that shined brightly in the sun, and he held onto a very large battle axe, that only a man of his stature could carry.

“I did not order such antics to take place.” he said with anger. His voice was very deep and raspy, commanding respect with every word that he spoke. “Who is responsible for this?”

The man that had approached Gawain and demanded him hand over the item in question, approached and knelt down before the King Of Thieves. “It was I who orchestrated the attack on this man.” he answered. “But I had no idea that these children would interfere in such matters.”

“Yet I heard you order your men to kill them all, did I not?” the King asked.

“You did.” the man agreed.

“Why would you do such a thing, Kole?” the King questioned. “You’re my most trusted and loyal friend. Tis not like you to be so fool hearty.”

“Your Majesty.” he bowed. “If you would be so humble to give me the chance to explain my actions.”

The King thought about it for a minute, “You may, but this had better be good.”

“My scouts have told me that this man and his companions have stumbled upon a piece of the Legendary Blade.” Kole explained. “I wanted that man to hand it over peacefully, but he kindly refused.”

“So you decided to take it by force?” the King bellowed. “You of all people know, that’s not the way we do business here at East Haven. Or have you forgotten that?”

“But your Majesty, that item they carry is worth a fortune.” Kole responded hysterically. “Shut up.” the King demanded. “You know the rules, you don’t kill in my town. If you want

something bad enough, you bargain for it. We no longer take things by use of force.” “Do you not understand what they carry?” Kole angrily responded.

“I care not for your words at this time, Kole.” the King snapped. “You’re lucky that I don’t exile you and your men for disobeying my laws. Leave my sight and do not return until I say otherwise.”

Kole stood up and bowed to the King once more, “As you wish.” he turned to walk away but before he did so he gave a warning to Gawain, “This isn’t over yet. Mark my words, I will have the object I seek before you leave here.”

“That’s enough, Kole.” the King roared. Kole turned and slightly bowed his head to the King smiling before walking away. “I do apologize for his disobedience, he’s still young and trying to impress his men.”

“That’s quiet alright.” Gawain said. “I understand how youth can be a handful.”

“I’m glad that you understand.” the King laughed loud and heavy, he sounded just like a bear growling at its pray. Gawain was one to understand how to treat others and laughed along with the King, as a sign of respect. When the sounds of laughter faded Gawain was very humble.

“Your Majesty, if I may.” Gawain approached.

“Please call me, Asher.” the King smiled. “I really hate formalities.” Gawain bowed, “You can call me Gawain. The pleasure is mine.”

“Nonsense, Gawain. You’re in my town, so the pleasure is all mine indeed.” Asher smiled. “So what can this humble king do for you?”

“For one we need a safe place to stay for the night, now that everyone knows what it is that we carry. Two, we would like safe passage in the morning when we take our leave.” Gawain asked of Asher politely.

“Of course, I will see this done right away.” Asher replied with kindness. “Wait, I have an even better idea. Join me as my guests of honor for tonight at my residence.”

“We would be honored, but we have to respectfully decline.” Gawain replied with courtesy. “But I insist. If you wish to stay safe, it would only make sense.” Asher wasn’t going to take no

for an answer. “It would be rude of me not to offer such kindness.”

“Well since you insist, it would be rude of us to say no to your kindness.” Gawain bowed.

It wasn’t long before three or four bandits returned with their horses from the Inn. That was a sign that Asher wasn’t going to give them a choice in the matter regardless of words being said. At least he was kind enough to let them check their belongings before they mounted the horses. “Is all as it was before?” Asher asked.

“Yes, all is as we left it.” Gawain smiled.

“Good.” Asher bellowed. “Then if you would, ride by my side to prove to the others that you are my guests.”

“Of course.” Gawain humbly said.

“Why is Gawain being so friendly to that man?” Ellyn whispered. “Is he not the leader of the thieves?”

“He’s the King Of Thieves.” Leon whispered back. “Gawain can tell when a man is honorable and deserves the utmost respect, that’s why Gawain treats him in such a manner.”

“About as honorable as a thief can be.” Ulrich quietly interrupted. “However, it would be best to stay on his good side for the time being.”

“Hmm, I think I understand. Asher could be of use to us.” Ellyn whispered. “Something like that.” Ulrich spoke softly.

Gawain rode his horse beside Asher, just like he had asked of him, while Ellyn, Leon, and Ulrich stayed close behind. “We’re almost there.” Asher announced. As they drew near, the King’s manor was coming into sight, “Behold, the manor of East Haven.” it was a marvelous view to behold indeed. The manor itself was made from stone, but not like any stone that had been seen before, this stone shined as bright as the armor Asher bore, and seemed to stand just as tall as the King himself. It was surrounded by gates that at first glance seemed to go on forever, the manor was guarded tighter than any castle keep. Which was understandable, being the King Of Thieves you had to protect your treasure just as much as you had to protect yourself.

“Do you see that?” Ellyn gasped. “What a beautiful sight to behold.”

“That it is, young miss.” Asher turned to her and smiled, before looking back at the gates, “Your King has returned. Open the gates.”

You could hear the guards on the other side scrambling to hurriedly open the gate to let their king inside. Within seconds the big iron gates slowly opened, the grinding of the gears could be heard working hard to do its job. “Let us hurry along.” Asher smiled. Once inside it was a short ride before they had found themselves at the bottom of the steps where Asher resided. “Follow me.” he said

dismounting from his horse.

“Let us make haste.” Gawain said to the others. “We do not want to seem rude.” he dismounted from his horse and proceeded to follow Asher up the steps towards the manor doors. Leon was the first to jump off of his horse and run up the steps behind Gawain, followed by Ellyn. Ulrich on the other hand took his time, he was in no hurry to please anyone.

“What’s the hold up, Ulrich?” Gawain shouted from the top of the steps. “I go at my own pace, old man.” Ulrich grumbled.

“We don’t have time for this.” Gawain snarled. “Hurry along, Ulrich.”

“Damn.” Ulrich mumbled. “He’s crazy if he thinks that he can tell me what to do.”

“Come on, Ulrich.” Leon said. “If you don’t hurry up I will make sure that I’m the first one inside the manor.”

“Like hell you will.” Ulrich went running up the steps as fast as he could, within a blink of an eye he past everyone, even Asher and Gawain, straight through the manor doors.

“Ulrich.” Gawain’s eyes flamed. “The King is always the first to enter, not his guests.”

“It’s quiet alright, Gawain.” Asher laughed. “Kids will always be kids, no matter how you look at it. Even if they are the mightiest of warriors, the kid inside will always show through young ones such as them.”

“Of course.” Gawain bit his tongue. “Even so, manners is of the utmost importance when you’re a guest in another mans home.”

Asher walked by and slapped Gawain on the back, not knowing his own strength he almost sent Gawain stumbling to the ground. “You need to lighten up, Gawain.” he laughed, walking on inside.

“So what do you think about my humble home?” Asher asked Ulrich.

“I have to admit, its not bad.” Ulrich answered. “Still, its not as big as the Academy.” “The Academy you say?” Asher questioned.

“Yes, where we train to become knights.” Ulrich answered without thinking.

Gawain overheard and quickly walked inside the manor, “Tis truly an amazing place you have here, Asher.” he said. “How does one such as yourself acquire a magnificent place such as this?”

That remark seemed to get under the skin of Asher, “The answer to your question will have to wait until later, I have some pressing matters to handle.” he replied. “My servant shall show you to your quarters, I shall call upon you all when dinner is served.” Asher turned and made his way down the hall until he was out of sight.

“If you would, follow me.” the servant said. He took them down a long stretch of hallway, the same that Asher retreated down. The servant stopped and opened one of the doors at the end, “This is your room good sir’s, if you need anything let me know. I shall return when the King is ready for you, do clean up and change your clothes before then.” he then turned his attention towards Ellyn, “Madam, if you would, please follow me. A young lady such as yourself needs a room of her own.”

Ellyn smiled, “I will be just fine staying in their room.”

“That is not how things work here young lady.” the man replied.

“Fine.” Ellyn snapped, and stomped away. Behind her followed the servant, muttering some unpleasant words under his breath.

When Ellyn, and the servant were out of sight, Gawain began to chuckle ever so slightly. “You heard the man, lets get ourselves cleaned up. ” he opened the door and walked inside.

“Keep an eye out.” Ulrich whispered to Leon. “I have a bad feeling about this.” “Paranoid as ever I see.” Leon joked.

“No, I just know how to keep myself alive.” Ulrich scowled.

“Calm down, I was only joking.” Leon chuckled. “You know that I trust in your word, my friend. I shall keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.”

“Thank you.” Ulrich grinned.

An hour later there was knock on the door, Gawain not being one to trust in his new surroundings grabbed for his sword. “You may enter, but do so slowly.” he warned.

The door opened slowly, and the servant peaked around the corner with caution. “There is no need to act in such a barbaric manner. I’m just here to inform you that Asher has requested his guests join him for dinner now, that is all.” he replied. “Please leave your weapons behind, and follow me to the dinner hall.”

“Like hell we are.” Gawain barked.

“Whatever, do as you please.” the servant snarked. “It’s not like I can stop a pack of barbarians.” “There are my guests of honor.” Asher proudly announced. “Please sit and feast with me.”

There was a long table at the center of the room, atop that table was a feast fit for a king. A huge cooked bird in the center, surrounded by potatoes, and a tub of gravy on the side with bread rolls, to the right of that was a fully cooked pig with an apple in its mouth. And to the left was where the beers and ciders we kept. Asher sat at the head of the table, and already had a massive turkey leg in his hand. “Come now. Eat. Eat.” he bellowed, waving the turkey leg around in the air with one hand and a cup of mead in the other.

It had been over a month since Leon, Gawain, and Ulrich had eaten a full course meal, even longer for Ellyn. They pigged out and ate as much as their stomachs could handle, and drank their fill of ciders as well. “Now that we have stuffed are gullies full of food and booze, there are some questions that now need be answered.” Asher said, rubbing the grease from his beard.

Gawain leaned back in his chair, pulling a smoking pipe from his pouch and stuffed it with tobacco. He proceeded to pull two flints from his pouch as well, striking them together until the sparks lit the tobacco in his pipe. Gawain puffed on the stem and exhaled a thick cloud of smoke from his mouth. “Go on, Asher. I shall answer your questions to the best of my abilities.”

“That’s good to hear.” Asher smiled. “You seem like a very honest man, I trust you shall be

truthful.”

“Like wise.” Gawain puffed on his pipe again and let out another cloud of smoke.

“You asked me a question earlier that struck a nerve.” Asher lit up his own smoking pipe. “I feel as though I owe you an answer.” he said, letting a cloud of smoke rise from his mouth.

“Don’t worry about it.” Gawain replied. “I shouldn’t have asked such a personal question in the first place.”

“Its quiet alright.” Asher responded, exhaling another thick cloud of smoke. “My father owned this castle before I.”

“Beg your pardon?” Gawain said.

“My father was the First King Of Thieves.” Asher said. “You look surprised to hear that.” “That I am.” Gawain responded, puffing on his pipe yet again. “Did you take over once your

father stepped down?”

“My father didn’t step down.” Asher lowered his head. “He was murdered.”

“I’m so sorry.” Ellyn butted in. “Gawain, you shouldn’t ask questions that makes a person remember such horrible things from their past.”

“One thing you learn from your past Miss Ellyn, is how to use such memories to become even stronger than before.” Asher cracked a faint smile.

Leon stood up from his chair, clearly this conversation was upsetting to him. “I need some air.” he said. “Thank you for the food, Sir Asher.” he turned and walked out of the dinning hall.

“Is he going to be okay?” Asher asked.

“Leon is a strong young man, he will be just fine.” Gawain smiled. “Tell me more of your father.”

“What more do you want to know?” Asher replied.

Gawain raised his brow, “Why would someone want to murder your father?” he asked,

emptying his pipe and replacing it back into his pouch.

Asher looked around the room to make sure that none of his help were around to listen in on what he had to say. “There’s a secret tomb underneath this manor.” he whispered.

Gawain leaned forward as though to keep Asher’s secret safe, “Did the assailant know of this tomb?” Gawain quietly questioned.

“I’m not sure.” Asher answered. “But I do believe that whoever it was wanted my fathers treasure, so badly so, that they were willing kill for it.”

“Last question.” Gawain said. “What was so important about that treasure that someone would kill your father for it?”

Asher was hesitant to speak because Ellyn and Ulrich now leaned in as close as they could, which made Asher smile, almost laugh. “Looks like you’re not the only one that wants to know.” he chuckled lightly. But his smile faded, “The hilt to the legendary blade in which you seek the pieces to, is held in the tomb that I speak of. My father felt it was his duty to protect it with his life.”

Sometimes it takes much more than words to spark Gawain’s curiosity, however when Asher talked of the hilt that was hidden away inside the tomb below, he was all ears. “That must explain why your father was killed.”

“I believe so.” Asher said.

“Can I ask a favor of you?” Gawain said, with a furrowed brow.

“I can tell by the look on your face this is of the utmost importance.” Asher replied. “Go ahead and ask your favor.”

“Will you allow us entry into this tomb?” Gawain politely asked.

“I can, but only if you answer my questions first.” Asher smirked. “It’s only fair.” Gawain smiled and relaxed back into his chair. “Ask me anything that you wish.” “That’s what I like to hear.” Asher laughed.

“This is stupid.” Ulrich grumbled. “I’m going to see if I can replace Leon.”

“Wait for me.” Ellyn shouted, chasing after Ulrich until they both disappeared out of the dinning hall.

Asher and Gawain had the room to themselves and could discuss things in private, “Kids.” Asher bellowed. “Always so impatient.”

“That’s what I deal with on a daily basis.” Gawain joked.

“I feel sorry for you.” Asher laughed loudly. But that laughter was short lived as Asher was quick to get back to the business at hand. “Answer me this Gawain, where do you and your companions hale from?”

“The two young men, and myself hale from the great city of Drasal.” Gawain answered. “What of the girl?” Asher questioned. “Is she not apart of your group?”

“She is now, after we saved her life.” Gawain said. “What happened?” Asher pushed the questioning further.

“We happened upon a caravan that was being attacked by bandits, we manged to slay the scum. But it was to late, all of the people with the caravan were already dead. To our surprise Ellyn jumped from the shadows waving a blade at us, once we calmed her down. Ellyn explained that she and others had been taken against their will, by the people of the caravan. She also explained that they were in league with the bandit scum. But something happened after they made the exchange, the bandits turned on the caravan and Ellyn was lucky to escape with her life.” Gawain explained.

“Just as I feared, bandits have been taking people. I thought it was just a rumor at first to make us look worse than what we already do. But now I know that’s not the case, this is a major concern to me.” Asher trembled with anger.

“Tis troubling times in the world of Todrain.” Gawain sighed.

“Indeed.” Asher agreed. “But that is matters for another day.” he smiled faintly. “Tell me more

of what you do in the city of Drasal.”

“I’m a master trainer at the Academy.” Gawain said.

“What exactly does a master trainer at the Academy do?” Asher asked out of curiosity.

“We train young men to become Knights Of Valor.” Gawain bragged, not purposely though. “Interesting.” Asher said. “So your Academy trains warriors to become knights?”

“Well, we are the the only Academy to teach such skills.” Gawain bragged again. “That’s where you’re wrong.” Asher laughed.

“Tis the truth.” Gawain grumbled.

“I’m sorry Gawain, but there are other Academy’s around the world.” Asher explained. “We even have an Academy here, to teach young ones how to become great thieves.”

“What?” Gawain choked. “You have an Academy here?”

“That we do, Gawain.” Asher smiled. “There are two, maybe three more Academy’s out there in the world as well.”

“Truly?” Gawain said with a look of wonder on his face. “Truly.” Asher nodded.

“And what does these other Academy’s teach?” Gawain questioned.

“If I’m correct, one teaches the skill of a Mage.” Asher answered. “Not sure about the others.” “They teach you magic, in other words.” Gawain said. “I just hope they don’t teach the Dark

Arts.”

“What is the Dark Arts?” Asher questioned.

“That’s something that I do not speak of.” Gawain replied.

“That’s understandable.” Asher respected Gawain enough to let that subject be. Gawain stood up to stretch his legs, “Will you now take me down to the tomb?”

Asher stood up and took a big swig of mead from his cup, “I have just one more question.” he

wiped the red from his mouth. “If you teach at the Academy, then why do you seek the pieces of the Legendary Blade?”

Gawain also grabbed his mug and drank down the last of the mead inside before answering the question, “Our esteemed First Knight, and new Headmaster sent us on this mission. I’m not sure why, but I don’t ask questions.”

Asher turned to walk out of the room, “Follow me.” he said. “However I have a word of advice.”

“What’s that?” Gawain asked, following in stride.

“Find out why they want the Legendary Blade.” Asher answered, walking on ahead.

Gawain didn’t make a response back to Asher’s words instead he just followed quietly along the way. That is until Asher lead Gawain down a dark and narrow hallway, “It’s a little dark down here.” Gawain joked.

Asher snapped his thumb and finger together and the sound echoed down the dark path, and torches on each side of the hall started to flicker and lit up one at a time. “Is that better?” he smiled. He started to walk on ahead but stopped briefly to give Gawain a warning. “Follow me move for move, this place is rigged with dangerous traps.”

“After you.” Gawain waved Asher on ahead.

Asher turned and walked on, Gawain did his best to mimic every move that Asher made. Lucky for them both that none of the traps had been activated, “Made it safe and sound. Thieves are always lucky.” Asher laughed.

“Made it to where?” Gawain asked, all that was in front of them was a stone wall.

“Patience my friend.” Asher placed his hand on the stone wall and called out, “I am the King Of Thieves. Open to none but me.” within seconds the wall started to move. On the other side of the wall, was the hidden tomb. There was gold as far as the eye could see, along with jewels, and well crafted

weapons. But there was something that caught Gawain’s eye at the back of the room, it was a small space on the wall protected by steel bars.

“This is truly a magnificent sight to behold.” Gawain gawked.

“It is magnificent indeed.” Asher agreed. “However I’m sure that there is something else that catches your eye in this room of wonders.”

“Tis true.” Gawain nodded. “What of that space on the wall that is protected by steel bars, is that where the hilt is held?”

“That it is my friend.” Asher answered. “Would you like to see it?”

“Indeed I would.” Gawain responded. “First things first though, is that wall protected by traps as well?”

“Of course not.” Asher laughed. He walked to the far side of the room to prove to Gawain that there were no surprises laying in wait, and motioned for Gawain to follow. “Come, tis safe to walk in here, I promise.” Gawain was reluctant at first, but eventually he mustard up the courage to walk over to where Asher stood waiting. “See, nothing happened.” Asher chuckled at Gawain’s nervousness.

Gawain instantly ignored Asher’s bellowing, walking straight past and peered through the bars. “How do we retrieve the item?” Gawain asked as he pulled at the bars to no avail. “There is no hole for a key.” he looked over the bars closely and found no way of removing what protected the treasure on the other side.

“There is only one way to retrieve the hilt.” Asher said. “My father knew of the dangers that this hilt could pose, so he had this tomb secretly built and placed the hilt behind these bars. No amount of magic or brute force will work, nor is there a key or secret password that will open the bars either.”

“Then what shall we do?” Gawain hissed. Asher did not respond to Gawain’s question, instead he stared furiously at the bars that held the hilt prisoner. “Asher, is something the matter?”

“Let me ask you.” Asher said with a darker tone to his voice. “What would you do if I refused

to allow you access to the hilt? Would you try and kill me, taking the treasure for yourself to complete your mission?”

Gawain’s eyes widened, “Never would I tarnish my honor for such a peaty item.”

“Good answer, you have passed one part of the test.” Asher smiled. “However, I’m not done with you yet.”

“Testing me? Sounds more like you are wanting to challenge me.” Gawain smirked.

“I see courage and strength in your eyes.” Asher said. “If you want that hilt it will take more than that though. I want to see your skills as a warrior first hand.”

“I never asked to have the hilt, but if you insist on fighting me then I shall oblige.” Gawain unsheathed his blade, a smile appeared on his face. Asher reached down and picked up his battle axe that was placed against the wall. “You had this thought out.” he said, after watching Asher grab for his weapon, that just so happened to be placed in the tomb near where the hilt was kept.

“You’re very perceptive.” Asher smirked. “Prepare yourself, I won’t go easy on you.” he lifted his battle ax up in the air and brought it straight down towards Gawain’s head. Gawain was battle tested and predicted the attack before it even happened, rolling out of the way.

“You’re good.” Gawain complemented. “But it takes more than brute strength to win a fight.” Gawain jumped onto the battle axe, showing off his agility, giving him an extra boost before flying through the air, kicking Asher in the face with such force that it sent him back against the wall, making dust fall from the ceiling.

Asher regained his composure, shaking the cobwebs from his head going right back on the attack. This time however charging at Gawain full speed ahead like a raging bull. Gawain was caught off guard by his speed barely having time to cast a shield spell that took the brunt of the attack, leaving him slightly injured. “You still stand.” Asher said with a look of bewilderment. “Most men would crumble under such an attack.”

“I’m not most men.” Gawain huffed, trying to hide the fact one of his ribs had been cracked. “Do you wish to carry on with this fight, or stand around and talk?”

“Arrogant as well.” Asher laughed. “I like that.” he took up his axe once more, but instead of attacking Gawain he turned and threw it at the steel bars. The axe hurled through the air with such velocity, that you could feel the wind off the weapon itself. A loud crash could be heard as the axe hit its target head on. “You have proven yourself worthy, the hilt is yours.”

Gawain was clearly confused by Asher’s actions, but that didn’t stop him from walking over to the where the steel bars used to be. He reached in the opening, taking the hilt from its resting place. It was light in weight, which was odd because the hilt was made from pure silver, that much he could tell. Also there was a blood red jewel resting on the bottom that seemed to glow as if it possessed some great and terrible power. Gawain looked back at Asher, “Why would you allow me to have this? We fought briefly, and you barley even know me. Why take such a chance?”

“Because of the legend.” Asher answered.

“Legend?” Gawain said with a confused look on his face. “What legend?”

“Legend has it, that four travelers will come to this land seeking pieces of great blade. They will unknowingly unleash evil upon the world of Todrain. All shall be plunged into chaos and darkness, until one of special blood will stand up, being the light in the darkness, and free the world of evil once and for all.” Asher explained. “I hear there is more of this tale, but that’s all I know personally.”

“You believe us to be that four?” “I do.”

“Then why allow us to have the hilt if you believe we will unleash such evil?” Gawain questioned.

“Because I believe there is a greater threat out there lying in wait, that needs to be found and vanquished. I also believe that one of you are of the special blood line the legend speaks of.”

“So you think that if that evil is released it can be destroyed? Who do you suppose will do such a feet?” Gawain said.

“You shall be the one to do such a feet.” Asher answered.

“Me?” Gawain laughed. “I do not hold such blood inside of me, but there is one with me that does hold such a bloodline.”

“One of those children?” Asher asked, barely able to hold back his laughter.

“Yes.” Gawain replied with a look of seriousness. He was getting ready to explain who was traveling along with him, when Ellyn, Leon, and Ulrich came running into the tomb.

“Something bad has happened.” they all three shouted at the same time. “What has happened?” Asher calmly asked.

“The manor is under attack.” Ellyn shouted.

“Did you see who was leading the charge?” Asher questioned. “It was Kole, your second in command.” Leon interrupted. “He must be after the hilt” Asher responded angrily.

“Then we fight.” Gawain exclaimed.

“No.” Asher demanded. “You have the hilt, it’s your job to protect it, not to help me fight my own people.” he walked over to the far left of the room and flipped what looked like a switch of sorts that opened a hidden room. “This path will lead you to the back of the manor, make your escape there and get as far away from here as you can.”

“Let us help you.” Gawain pleaded.

“I will have none of it.” Asher responded. “This is my town, and thieves handle their own problems.”

“But.” Gawain tried to say they could be of use but Asher would hear none of it, the man was stubborn in his beliefs.

“Leave at once.” Asher demanded. “Please.”

Gawain lowered his head and reluctantly agreed to leave the manor at once, “We leave now.” he ordered the others.

Ellyn, Leon, and Ulrich refused to leave, wanting to stay and help. Asher realized that the young ones were being rebellious, in the back of his mind he knew that he had to act quickly as the sound of footsteps could be heard running their way. So with his great strength he grabbed the youngsters up in his arms and threw them into Gawain with such force, that the four of them fell backwards through the hidden wall. Asher then flipped the switch again and pulled it from the wall so it could not be used again. “It was nice to meet people that still have honor in this world, take care my friends.” he smiled, as the wall closed and he could be seen no longer.

“You stupid, stupid man.” Ellyn shouted, pounding her fist against the wall.

“That is enough, Ellyn.” Gawain told her. “He gave his life to protect us, lets honor it by doing as he requested.”

“Honor means nothing if you have to die for such trivial things.” Ulrich said.

“Sometimes honor is all we have in this world, Ulrich.” Gawain said, turning to walk away. “I don’t need your type of honor.” Ulrich muttered.

Asher readied his battle axe, at any moment the intruders would come rushing into the tomb after the hilt, killing anyone in their path that would stop them, even the King. The first wave of bandits that came flooding into the room meet their end by the hand of their kings ax. At first it startled the rest of the group, but Kole reminded them of the riches that awaited inside the tomb, if they could make it past Asher. “I know that he is your King. But also know that he hides riches for himself right underneath your nose, not willing to share with his people.” that was all it took to anger the men once more, and they stormed the room for a second time.

Asher fought valiantly, however the numbers game would prove to much for even the mightiest

of men like him. Asher’s own men had turned on him, before long they had even disarmed him of his axe. “This is an outrage. I am your King, why do you do this? Have I not been a good king to all of you?”Asher angrily shouted, fighting them tooth and nail.

“Why don’t you just shut up already, your bellowing grows old.” Kole hissed as he walked inside the tomb behind his men. “You’re just as bad as your father was.”

“What would you know of my father?” Asher fumed.

“I know that he begged for his life before he died.” Kole smirked. “And if you don’t tell me what I want to know, you shall share the same fate as he.” Kole rared back his fist and punched Asher hard across the face. “Tell me where the hilt is hidden.”

“Look around you, there are hilts and weapons all around.” Asher laughed.

Kole punched Asher again, this time splitting his upper lip. “Don’t play dumb with me.” he grumbled. “I want the hilt to the legendary blade, tell me where it’s hidden.”

“What you seek is no longer within these walls.” Asher smiled, blood running down his lip.

Kole let his anger explode, punching Asher in the face over and over again, until his own hand started to hurt. “Where is the hilt?” he screamed.

Though Asher’s face was a bloody mess, he still laughed at Kole’s ignorance. “You will never get your hands on that hilt, or the pieces of the blade itself.” Asher laughed loudly enough that it echoed throughout the tomb. Kole growing ever so tired of Asher’s antics pulled a knife from his belt, stabbing Asher in the side of the neck with the blade, again, and again, and again. Asher laughed at Kole until his last breath, his body went limp, and the great King Of Thieves was no more.
