GRIM REAPER - An angel which attends to death, collecting souls at death, ending life at the appointed death.

The Grim Reaper seems to have appeared in Europe during the 14th century. It was during this time that Europe was dealing with what was then the world’s worst pandemic, the Black Death, believed to be the result of the plague. It is estimated that about one-third of Europe’s entire population perished as a result of the pandemic, with some areas of the continent suffering far greater losses than others. The original outbreak of the plague occurred during 1347–51, and outbreaks then recurred several other times after that. So, clearly, death was something that the surviving Europeans had on their mind, and it is not surprising that they conjured an image to represent it. Samael (Hebrew: סַמָּאֵל, Sammāʾēl, “Venom/Poison of God”;[1] Arabic: سمسمائيل, Samsama’il or سمائل, Samail; alternatively, Smal, Smil, Samil, or Samiel)[2][3][4] is an archangel in Talmudic and post-Talmudic lore; a figure who is the accuser or adversary (Satan as mentioned in the Book of Job), seducer, and destroyer (Mashhit as mentioned in the Book of Exodus).

Although many of his functions resemble the Christian notion of Satan, to the point of being sometimes identified as a fallen angel. He is not necessarily evil, since his functions are also regarded as resulting in good, such as destroying sinners.

Ch. 1 Samael

I had dabbled with the thought of becoming mortal for a very, very long time. Being a couple of centuries years old, I feel like I have the right to think about mortality... Having spoken with a friend of mine who has been so, for about a century had mentioned that there was a way to become mortal but that I would need a spell that she had in her Shadows of the Night book but the most important part of casting it was being able to replace a pure soul because I would need a human’s soul to complete the spell. I’m not sure the schematics to the spell, but Shayla had guaranteed me that it works.

Finally, I decided that I 100% want to become human and call my friend Rim to see if he would take on the task of searching for the soul since I, being a Grim Reaper really couldn’t take time out of my schedule to do it myself. A couple of hours later I pop in at his place to chat with him in person about the details. Sitting on Rim’s couch I listen to him laugh at me after telling him what I wanted to accomplish. “You’re a jackass dude! Why in this world would you want to become one of those retched entities, Samael.” He scoffs, “a human, blah!”

Turning my ice-blue eyes to give him a glare I say, “I’m just tired of being an Angel of Death, man. I want something different; I need a change. An eternity of death isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, dude.” I sigh tiredly as I run a hand through my black hair and then prop my feet up on his coffee table as I lean my head against the top portion of his couch.

“You’re insane dude, but whatever you want. If you’re going to pay me to search for something that will be impossible to replace, I’m all yours!” Rim exclaims, excitement about the thought of making some money lighting up his Amethyst eyes. He then swats his hand against the side of my black combat boots, pushing them off the table on which I was resting them as he does so. I give Rim a toothy grin unbefitting my pale ivory complexion and my vampire-esk persona. Taking hold of my phone, I pull up my ‘Send-it’ app and typing in a few numbers, I send enough funds to Rim’s bank account for him to live on and travel, if need be, for the next month or so. Looking back up at him, I say, “alright, I’ve sent you the funds. When will you be able to start searching for the pure soul?”

“Uh, well, do you have any idea where I should even begin to start searching for this being of yours?” He raises an eyebrow in question not expecting me to give him an answer.

“Yeah, my witchy friend Shayla suggested to begin looking in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.”

“Um, that’s a bit precise, ...isn’t it?”

“Meh,” I shrug my shoulders. “I trust Shayla, she hasn’t steered me wrong yet.” As Rim stands up from the chair he had been in, I stand as well. I don’t think he even realizes he has opened the front door for me to exit from when in all honesty I can simply step into the shadowlands from anywhere and make my exit, but instead of saying anything I just step out into the hallway of his apartment building before slipping into the shadow realm.
