Soulmate Of A True Alpha -
Scene 20
Pdv Stiles
Me : Scott! Get over here! I’ve got her!
I pull Hannah close to me, trying to hold her still until Scott arrives, but as she struggles she knocks me backwards and we roll down a slope. I don’t recognise her any more. If I didn’t know her, I think she’d scare me. Her eyes, which used to be green, are now a piercing gold that can be seen from far away. Her hair has grown at least twenty centimetres longer and her fingernails have been replaced by claws as sharp as knives. And no matter how hard I hold her, she manages to break away from me and runs into the forest.
Me: F**k!
I run towards her despite the fact that I’m much slower. Luckily Scott has arrived and is holding Hannah much better than I am. I inject her with morphine. She falls asleep and we finally drop to the floor and take a deep breath after a hard night’s sleep.
Me: We really should have taken that test another day.
Scott: Absolutely!
Two hours before
Hannah is talking to Raphaël. I think she’s decided to forgive him deep down. Scott and I look at her but I can see so much regret in my best friend’s eyes that it hurts my heart. I turn to him and put my hand on his shoulder so he can look back at me.
Me: Scott, stop blaming yourself. You’re forgetting that you saved her life. She would have died without your bite, and whatever she becomes, the whole pack will help you. Look at her, she’s fine.
He nods and turns back to his sister. Suddenly, Hannah tenses up and bends over, screaming. Scott and I don’t even look at each other for a second and we run towards her, pushing Raphaël to get in front of her.
Hannah: My head! It’s horrible! Help me guys!
She raises her head. Her eyes have changed colour. Luckily, I’m the only one who saw it. We drag Hannah towards my car while she’s still screaming. I get in the back with her, holding her to my chest to muffle her screams while Scott leaves the car park.
Hannah: Stiles, please! Please do something! My head is going to explode if this keeps up!
Me: What the hell is wrong with you?!
Hannah: I don’t know! But it hurts like hell! Do something!
She was screaming, holding her head and her eyes were pouring out gallons of tears because the pain was so excruciating.
Me: Scott, where are you taking us?
Scott: To the veterinary clinic! We’ll be there soon! Hang on, Hannah!
She nods frantically and stops screaming, but she’s still holding her head. I hold her close to me and I can hear her gradually calming down. Scott parks outside the clinic door and runs to help me carry Hannah into the room. Deaton pushes all the equipment onto his metal table so we can put Hannah on it.
Deaton: What’s wrong with her?
Me: We don’t know/ Oh my God!
Hannah stands up but I don’t recognise her any more. Her hair, which used to be relatively short and curly, is now long and straight and long claws are replacing her fingernails.
Deaton: Hold her down and hurry! I’m coming back!
Just before she gets up from the table, we pounce on her, obeying Deaton’s orders. Hannah struggles so hard that even Scott and I can barely hold her.
Hannah: Let go of me! I want to get out! Let go of me!
Deaton comes running back and injects her with something before we can say or do anything. Hannah falls asleep almost immediately, my eyes darting from her to Deaton.
Me: What did you inject her with?
Deaton: Horse tranquilliser.
Me: What! But she’s going to sleep for a week!
Deaton: More like an hour or two.
Scott and I look at each other, not understanding.
Deaton: I think I know what’s wrong with her, but I’ll have to examine her a bit first. Just a quick question, what happened?
Scott: I must have bitten her during the outbreak…
He bows his head and Deaton frowns.
Me: The cure didn’t work on her and she was going to die, so Scott bit her to save her.
Deaton seems to be thinking harder than ever and leaves for his office without saying a word. I lean over to Hannah and look at her. I want so much to tell her how I feel about her but it never seems to be the right time and, now that she has faculties, I’m afraid it could be worse. I take a deep breath and stand up. Deaton comes back in, his arms full of books. He sets them down on another table. He flips through one quickly, then stops at a page:
“Ancient warrior: A mythological creature descended from the gods. These creatures with amazing powers are experts in the art of war, medicine and magic.
Me: War?!!?
Deaton: Whether you like it or not, Hannah is now very powerful and could cause a lot of problems if we don’t do something.
Scott: Expand…
Deaton: A body can only have so much power in one go. So her power will build from night to night until it’s at full capacity and she’ll have no idea what she’s doing during that time.
He looks for something in his cupboards, then turns back to us, handing vials to Scott and me
Deaton: Inject her every two hours tonight and be very careful.
We both nod. Scott takes Hannah in his arms and we head for the exit when Deaton stops us.
Deaton: Bring her to me tomorrow when she regains consciousness. I can help her control her transformation.
Scott: No problem, thanks for everything Deaton.
Deaton: You’re welcome boys, off you go now, you’ve got a long night ahead of you.
We leave the clinic and Scott puts Hannah in my back seat. I sit next to her and rest my head on hers.
As the night begins
Scott and I slowly approach Hannah with the syringe full of product and we both look at each other.
Scott and I: You’re doing it!
We both glare at each other.
Me: She’s your sister!
Scott: That’s just it! I’m not supposed to give her an injection of morphine for an animal ten times her weight!
Me: That’s even less the responsibility of his hyperactive best friend!
He thinks for a moment.
Scott: You injected your snake with medication! You’re better at this than I am! You’ve got experience!
Me: Experience? Yoda was 20 centimetres tall, had a heart condition and died two days after his first injection! I don’t call that experience!
Scott: How could you choose such a sick animal?!!?
Me : He was cute! His eyes were minnows!
We look at each other for a long moment and I sigh.
Me: Give me the f*****g syringe.
He smiles with all his teeth and gives it to me. I slowly approach Hannah, “the weapon” in hand, and get ready to stick the needle into her skin when she suddenly opens her eyes and turns to me with a look that’s… animal.
Me: Hannah? Can you hear me?
Hannah: Stiles… Get out… Now!
I’d like to step back, listen to what Deaton has told us, but I can’t forget that underneath his cruel gaze is the girl I’ve fallen madly in love with. I take a step forward, determined.
Me: Hannah, you’re going to control yourself, you’re not going to hurt me, calm down.
Her fingernails lengthen at the same time as her hair.
Hannah: “Not going to hurt you” Stilinski? I’m telling you right now, all I want is to feel your head break as I sink my claws into it, and I don’t give a damn about the pain I’m going to feel tomorrow, so piss off!
I glance at Scott to get him to face something. He nods quickly. I turn back to Hannah who is now standing in front of me. With each step she takes towards me, I can see in her eyes that she wants to stop moving, but her legs keep moving. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Scott preparing another syringe, but the bottle slips from his fingers and breaks at his feet. Hannah turns to her brother with a Machiavellian smile on her lips.
Hannah: What did you think you were going to do?!? Fall asleep when the night’s only just begun?
Me: Hannah, look at me!
She turns to me.
Me: Stop it Hannah, control yourself. Don’t do something you’ll regret. I know you’re still conscious inside, so stop it now.
Her eyes are brimming with tears and seeing her like this calms me down. She’s here, Hannah. She comes slowly towards me and I’m scared, but at the last moment she puts her lips on mine. I’m so surprised that I don’t move for a few seconds but respond to her k**s. I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long that I think I’m living in a dream. I put my hands against her head to press her closer to me, but her body disappears and I almost fall. I open my eyes again and see her jump out of the window. I stand still and stare at the window. She’s run away and I don’t know if it was really her or the ancient warrior…
