Scene 22

I sit down on the metal table. Deaton asked me to come to his office for I don’t know what.

Deaton: So, Hannah, you’ve quickly realised that the powers of an ancient warrior are more complicated to control than those of a simple werewolf?

I nod

Deaton: I thought if we met for an hour or two a day to master your powers, it’d be easier for all of us once your transformation was complete.

I nod

Scott: Is that why you asked me here?

Deaton: Hannah will learn better if she’s accompanied by her alfa, and what’s more, if it’s someone she trusts.

I get up from the table, ready to start her exercises.

An hour later

I jump into my brother’s arms and show him my claws. So cool!

Me: Did you see that? I’ve got claws ! It’s awesome !

He smiles and I let him into my skin. I’ve learnt a lot in this hour, I can do fighting figures like the ones you see in action films. We leave the clinic after thanking Deaton profusely and get on the bike.

Me: And now? What do we do now?

Scott: You’re not forgetting the plan, are you?

Right. The plan. How could I forget?

Me: I’d rather you’d forgotten it.

At home

Kira: Do you think we’re going to be decent with three computers?

She’s gesticulating all over the place, biting her nails.

Me: Kira stop moving around like an earthworm, you’re supposed to know how to fight and you’re healing too. You’re not very smart for a fox, are you?

All eyes turn to me

Me: Oops. Sorry

They turn back to their task and I see Allison next to Kira and I remember the day before, I still haven’t apologised to her and Lydia.

Me: Alison can I have a word? In private

She nods and we go into the living room.

Me: I wanted to apologise for yesterday. You were worried and I shouted at you. Sorry

She smiles and hugs me. I smile back.

Alison: It’s all right, Hannah.

I give her a hug and we join the others.

Me: Who’s ready to kick the benefactor’s a*s?

Evening

Me: No! Not me! I’m not doing it!

Scott: Hannah/

Me: No! I’m not going to watch you get electrocuted by a rookie kitsune, I’m not!

I walk out of the room and sit on the floor. A few tears roll down my cheeks. What do I do if we don’t make it? What if something unexpected happens and he stays? Stiles comes out and sits down next to me. I lower my head and wipe my eyes. Without saying anything, I snuggle up to him and breathe softly. I calm myself and reluctantly separate from him.

Stiles: Hannah, I know this isn’t the time, but we need to talk…

He’s talking about the k**s. I’d love to talk about it too, and finally tell him how much I’m new to him, but the whole pack is waiting for us on the other side.

Me: I’d really like us to talk about it, but…

Stiles: Yes, I know, it’s not the right time…

He gets up and I do the same. Before he goes in, I take his arm and he lets go of the handle.

Me: Can we discuss this tonight? After the benefactor?

His smile returns

Stiles: With pleasure.

I smile back and he gives me a k**s on the temple before we go into the bedroom. I go next to my brother and take his hand.

Me: You’re aware that if anything happens to you, I’m going to bring you back to life and you’re going to have a hell of a time?

He laughs

Scott: Walking concluded

I smile back and he nods to Kira. She puts her hand on his chest and an electric shock comes out. Scott shouts and squeezes my hand before falling asleep. Kira removes her hand from her trembling heart and I turn to Kira’s mother.

Me: Is he . Is he all right?

Noshiko: Put your ear to his heart.

I do so and I can hear his heart beating. Very slowly, but it’s beating. I breathe a sigh of relief and Stiles goes off to call an ambulance.

Arrive at hospital

Doctor: Time of death 21:01. Please notify Melissa McCall.

Mummy! Oh my God! We’ve forgotten her! I hear her screaming and crying as she comes out of a room and I run to her to catch her and give her a hug. I put my head to her ear and whispered

Me: Scott isn’t dead, don’t forget that your son is an esparto.

She stops crying suddenly and raises her head towards me.

Me: See you at the morgue in ten minutes. I love you, Mum.

Mum: I love you too, darling.

I head for the morgue to join the pack and Noshiko. Scott is in the middle of them lying on his back with a blanket. Seeing him like this is just horrible. He looks dead. Mum comes in and stands next to us, taking a long look at Scott. We explain the plan vaguely and she nods.

Mum: And…what happens after 45 minutes?

Kira: I revive him the same way I did this morning.

Mum: No, I mean if we go over 45 minutes.

Nishiko: He dies

Mum stops breathing for a long time and looks at Scott. I give her a hug to calm her down and we all go to our stations. Stiles, Kira, Liam and I go up to one of the rooms prepared for the computer while Allison, Argent and Noshiko set up the cameras.

Ten minutes later

Me: Okay, he’s never coming or/

One of the cameras goes off and we all look at each other.

Kira: Do you think it’s him?

Me: There’s only one way to replace out.

I was going to leave but Stiles stopped me

Stiles: Are you really going? What if he really is the benefactor?

Me: That’s why I have this.

I whip out my claws and put them in front of his face. He sighs. Kira takes out her katana and comes next to me.

Kira: I’ll come with you

I smile at him

Liam: Me too

I sigh

Me: Let’s go, kids!

The three of us are off to the races

Stiles: Don’t dawdle!

I laugh and we get on. I go next to the camera, which has gone out and is completely broken.

Me: What the hell?

Kira: Get down!

I obey and almost get a knife in the face. I transform and turn around. A man half human half … Bone? is in front of me and through his animal skull I can see he’s really angry.

Me: What the hell are you?!!?

He snarls and jumps at me and I only just manage to dodge him. I see out of the corner of my eye that Kira and Liam are also being attacked by one of his … Thing

Me: Kira, what is that thing?

Kira: A tawny warrior! Look out!

He pulls out another knife from behind his back and is about to attack me but I jump and land on his back. I trip him and he falls to the ground. I put my arms against his arms to stop him moving. My claws are useless against this thing. Liam and Kira are down. Liam gets up quickly and goes to check on Kira but she remains unconscious. Taking advantage of my distraction, the tawny warrior knocks me down and gets on top of me to stop me moving too. Liam masters the second fawn warrior and Kira gets up.

Me: Kira! Your katana! Throw it at me!

She nods and rolls her weapon beside me. I manage to make a cut on the arm of the fawn warrior and he is distracted enough for me to get away from him and I get back on my feet. I was going to attack him but someone shouted next to us.

We’re leaving!

It’s a woman. She really looks like Allison. Is she Kate Argent?

Me: Are you Kate?

She laughs but doesn’t answer me and leaves, followed by her warriors. I was going to run after her but Liam stopped me.

Liam: Don’t go, you’re hurt.

I take a long look at his hands on my arms to get him to let go and he does. He points at my leg and there’s a big gash halfway down my leg but I don’t feel any pain.

Me: I’m healing. I’m good to go!

Kira: No, we’ve got more important things to do. There’s only 5 minutes left…

Already! I look at my watch. Oh my God! Scott! We run to the morgue and Stiles, Allison and Christ are already there.

Christ: Finally!

Me: We’ve had a slight setback.

They sigh and smile and Kira puts her hand on Scott’s heart like she did this morning and an electric shock comes out. All the stress I’ve built up during the evening comes out when I see my brother’s eyes. I smile and jump at him. He holds me close.

Me: I was so scared of losing you… There were only three minutes left and… With this band of wild warriors…

Scott: Did it at least work? Do you know who they are?

I look at Stiles and Christ but they nod. Scott sighs

Scott: It doesn’t matter, at least you tried.

We all smile a little disappointed and I pull away from my brother. I don’t know what I would have done if he hadn’t survived.
