Me: The horror doctors?

Lydia: Does it speak to you too?

Strangely, no. Well… maybe it does… it’s strange how recently I’ve been reading this book.

Me: Has anyone read it yet?

Lydia: Not yet.

Me: We should all read it.

Lydia: Kira’s on it.

I nod and give her the book back. We walk past Stiles’ locker and I can’t help but look at him and sigh. I should have stayed. I should have gone to see him. I know he’s suffering because of Donovan, but I left…

Lydia: You, you have a problem.

Me: Stiles and I kind of had a fight this morning.

Lydia: What! You two never fight.

Me: There’s a first time for everything, you might say.

During class

I pick up the book from Lydia’s desk and read the summary

“In a small town, teenagers are kidnapped and buried alive”.

I glance at Lydia

Me: We really need to read this book

“A few days later they reappear to sow chaos in their wake, commanded by people nicknamed: Horror Doctors.”

Brilliant.

At the library break

Scott: I don’t think it’s the horror doctors taking the bodies away.

Scott told me that all the chimera bodies had been removed. Plus Donovan’s, but I didn’t tell him.

Me: So it could be someone else?

Scott: I’m sure of it. Why kill the chimeras only to take the bodies back later? It’s illogical.

Me: It’s also illogical to turn teenagers into monsters only to kill them later.

Scott: I don’t think they’re teenagers to them. They look like… experiments.

Me: So they must be failed experiments, I can’t wait to see what happens when they succeed.

Scott: Me neither.

Nothing that I thought would give me the chills.

We leave the library but Scott stops and sniffs.

Me: What?

Scott: I thought I smelled b***d.

Uh-oh.

Me: Probably just a student with a nosebleed. Come on we’re going to be late

He nods and we go to class.

Later.

I turn back to Lydia

Me: I can hear you panicking, what’s wrong?

Lydia: Look at the thank you page!

I take the book

“Thanks for everything to the great Gabriel Valak”.

Me: Do you know it?

Lydia: A bit too much.

The evening

Stiles takes his jacket and puts it on quickly.

Stiles: I’m coming with you and that’s final Hannah

Me: You don’t have to, Allison’s not coming.

Stiles: Yes, she is, because she’s well aware that this place is a madhouse of death.

Me: Right.

He readjusts his jacket but stops. His shoulder looks sore. Donovan. I take a deep breath

Me: Let’s go then!

I head for the exit but he stops me.

Me: Hm?

Stiles: I’m sorry about this morning.

Me: You didn’t have to do it, that’s all.

He smiles at me and we walk to his car

Later on

Lydia and Kira try to get the door open. I wait with Stiles and Scott, leaning against the jeep.

Scott: Stiles, are you sure you’re okay?

I look quickly at Stiles and discreetly take his hand.

Stiles: Yeah, why?

Scott: You look like you’ve got something on your mind

Stiles: I think we’re all concerned.

Scott: Yeah but some more than others

He turns to Kira and I frown.

Me: Did something happen?

Scott: When the second chimera, Lucas, sensed us … I heard Kira speaking in Japanese

He sounds distraught

Me: Why didn’t you tell me?

Stiles: I don’t replace it that dramatic.

Scott: She doesn’t speak a word of Japanese!

Stiles: Yeah, but there’s no fatalities.

Scott: It was a close call. If I hadn’t intervened she probably would have killed Lucas.

Stiles: Oh right.

He thinks before daring to speak

Stiles: Yeah, but he still tried to kill you, so it would have been self-defence.

Scott: No, it was more than that… she was gonna cut his head off!

Stiles: She may not have had another option, but there must be some circumstances where it’s… normal… to kill. Tracy killed her father and Lucas would have killed you too if it wasn’t for Kira.

Scott: They’re not the bad guys, they’re the victims. We have to protect them, not kill them.
