As Mavis made her way to the bathroom, she paused and turned back to Harlan.

“Do you know what they would have done to me if I’d refused to tell them what they wanted?” sheasked.

Harlan averted his gaze, pushing away the thoughts that her question had provoked. Whatever mighthave happened to her was of no concern to him. The only thing that mattered was the peril Derek faceddue to Mavis’ actions.

Frustrated, Mavis shook her head and headed straight for the lady’s room.

She took a few steps forward, then looked back at the door. Just as she had anticipated, Harlan wasstationed by the bathroom’s entrance.

Subconsciously, her hand went to her bruised belly, the memories of that terrible day flooding back.

The man’s scream of pain filled the air, and his companions rushed over to her, landing punches andkicks.

Her fortune turned when her father’s protective men arrived on the scene, breaking in and rescuing her.

Meanwhile, Harlan remained at the door, his eyes fixed on the clock.

Three minutes had ticked by, and Mavis had not emerged. Patiently, he waited another two minutes,but still no sign of her.

A sinking feeling settled in his gut. Something had happened. With a sense of urgency, he strode intothe lady’s room only to replace it vacant.

His eyes caught the open window, and the stool positioned conveniently beneath it.

With a cry of frustration, Harlan’s fist met the wall.
