Chapter 204 I Don’t Want You to Leave Me
Amelia's low tones fell next to her ear and drove Rose into a panic.
All these years, the Brown family had taken care of all her needs.
Even if they were moving out, without a job, the two of them ate, drank and lived off Amelia.
If the two of them were to go at it honestly, there was no way they could live in fancy apartments, much less Rita's hundred-thousand-dollar handbags. They relied entirely on the Brown family's support. Really, it should be said that they relied on Amelia's favoritism.
Naturally, Rose didn't have the guts to offend her benefactor out in the open.
Desperate to salvage the situation, she slapped herself. "This unfiltered mouth of mine - don't take it personally, Mom, I was just too angry at Mason and wanted to get at him. I wasn't thinking when I spoke." Wasn't thinking when she spoke?
Naturally, Amelia didn't buy that excuse. "You might have been angry, but that was sincere, too, wasn't it?"
"No, it really wasn't..." Pale, Rose shook her head and tried to explain.
Amelia looked coldly at Rose on the ground as she tried to explain. Completely unmoved, she scoffed. "Whether it was sincere or not, I'm telling you two today; I'm handing over the Brown family to Rita." The old lady's determination didn't sit well with Rose and Mason.
Rose had learned to keep her mouth shut, but it was Mason who asked desperately, "Mom, Rose is right. How could you neglect your own flesh and blood granddaughter and give the family properties over to an outsider?"
Amelia glared fiercely at Mason, disappointment in her eyes. "How did I ever spawn an idiot like you? Can't you see the situation for what it is?"
Hearing that, Mason and Rose blinked.
After a pause of several seconds, they asked in unison-
"What situation?"
"What situation?"
They'd spoken this much but this couple still wasn't getting in. Amelia almost lost it. "With everything that's been happening to the Brown family, we can only rely on Rita to help now.
"So long as she speaks, Liam won't stand by and let us die.
"When the Brown family's gotten through the crisis at hand, we can survive off the scraps left by the Wilsons.
"But you two dunderheads start trouble over and over again. Have you ever considered what'd happen if Rita breaks from the family? Without the Wilson family helping us, the Brown family could easily go bankrupt. With the way you two spend, how do you plan on living the rest of your lives?
"Forget letting Charlotte have a share of the inheritance, she'll be broke when she gets out of prison."
With Amelia reminding them, Rose finally realized the gravity of the situation.
The old lady was the more experienced player, after all.
She'd never thought that far and only concerned herself with the small world of the Brown family.
She'd completely forgotten that without the protection of the Wilsons, this small world would easily shatter, leaving nothing for her when it came her turn.
She didn't want to live a hard life.
Rose settled down, nodding repeatedly. "Of course you're right, Mom, of course you're right. We still can't break with that brat Rita yet. We still need her to maintain the Brown family and fatten up our coffers.: Waiting for Rita to straighten out the family for Charlotte to come out and reap the rewards sounded quite nice, actually.
Seeing that Rose wasn't completely stupid, Amelia's knotted brow loosened somewhat. "So long as you understand. Remember to treat her like a saint from now on. Whatever you need to do to convince her to take over the family, you do it."
"Don't worry, Mom, I'll keep her happy." For money, Rose's reply came quick.
"Talk is worthless. I want to see action." Amelia glared at Rose. "Last night and this morning, you've seriously upset Rita. Go and salve her. If you have to kneel down or slap yourself for her to take over the family, go ahead and do it!"
Leaving them with that, Amelia didn't give Rose and Mason any chance to retort. She stamped her cane back to her room.
Only Mason and Rose were left in the courtyard, and both their expressions were ugly.
Rose really didn't jive with the idea of begging Rita.
Frowning, she complained, "What is this nonsense, having me apologize to that bastard girl."
"Shut it!" Mason glared at her. "Is your memory going? Don't ever say those two words again, hear me! Unless you don't want more money."
At the mention of money, Rose slapped herself. "I forgot, damnit."
"All right, get up. Let's think of a way to appease her." Seeing that Rose was settling down, Mason didn't press the issue and helped her up from the ground.
At the same time, outside the Brown household.
Liam had Rita locked in the car.
In his seat, the man's dim gaze fell on her like frost. "Come here."
Rita stayed stuck to the door, not moving a muscle.
"No!"
"Don't make me say it twice. Come here." Her refusal stung the man, who narrowed his eyes. A black haze seemed to blanket her.
Rita's head buzzed, and she almost let go.
But thinking of Michael's ferocious blackmail, she bit her lower lip hard to keep herself sane. "I..." Won't!
But before she could get the "won't" out, the man had pulled her forcefully into his arms.
Now they were lying on the seat in an extremely intimate pose.
Rita frowned. "..." Well then!!!
She struggled to get out of the man's grip, but the disparity in strength was too great. She was being held still like a pillow.
"I don't believe it."
The man's lips parted behind her ear.
Rita's body stiffened. "What?"
What did he mean he didn't believe it?
"I don't believe you never loved me." Liam said, pulling him into her arms. "I trust my instincts."
"Instincts aren't reliable."
"What about evidence?" The man cocked his brow.
Rita frowned. "Evidence?" Didn't he end up replaceing nothing?
"The camera footage from the hospital the other night shows that you made a phone call and sent a text, but it didn't show up on your logs... which proves that someone's tampered with your communications." That move was obviously to keep him from suspecting the reason behind their breakup.
So someone must have threatened her that night.
His instincts weren't mistaken. She wasn't breaking up out of her own choice.
"I... mph..."
Rita tried to make up an excuse, but a pain came from her mouth.
He'd bit her.
The bite was gentle but also slightly punishing. "You distrust me so much you'd rather take on everything on your own?"
Rita froze on the spot, her hand clenching.
She didn't distrust him.
She just didn't want to see him hurt or see her parents hurt.
They were in the open while their enemies were unknown. She was afraid they'd have another accident.
"I don't want your pity." Liam's thin lips gnawed on her soft petals, his voice low and hoarse. "And I don't want you to leave me."
